On behalf of the

committee I would

like to welcome you all

back to Kembla Joggers

for another big year of

fitness, competition and

fun. A special welcome to

new members and their

families for whom I am

sure this will be the first

of many enjoyable years

to come with the club. As

always, the club has a lot

planned in the coming 12

months and we certainly

hope you make the most of it. Whether your bent

is for cross-country, road running or track events,

or all three, you shouldn’t have any shortage of

races to strap your shoelaces up for. We are hoping

to reignite our social programs in 2016 so expect

to see some more opportunities for you and your

families to mix with your KJ friends away from our

traditional running events.

After consulting with some of our membership via

small focus groups late last year, we have made

a few changes to our programs in an effort to

make them more attractive to our runners and less

onerous for officials and volunteers. Expect to see

some other tweaks here and there in the next few

years, including the Fitness 5 funrun, which in 2016

will for the first time incorporate a 10km distance,

to be called the Kerryn McCann 10. Track events

will revert to a 2 weekly schedule in the winter

months between May and August when competing

weekend events usually mean participation levels

are much lower than in summer. Less popular track

events will be parked so that the more preferred

middle distances of 5000/3000/1500/800m

feature more often to help win back the masses.

An 8km will feature with the 16km for the first time

and the less popular 10km road event later in the

year will give way to a 5km road event in the first

half of the season. As always your constructive

feedback about our programs is appreciated and

encouraged in our quest to provide you with the

events and activities you want most. So please

keep it up!

After successfully hosting our first NSW Cross-

Country Championship last year, we again get to

showcase our facilities when we host the Short

Course version of the state titles in July. We hope

the positive impression left by both events will be

the catalyst to being awarded the hosting rights for

the Australian Championships in 2017. If ever there

was a vote of confidence, the NSW Little Athletics

state titles will this year return to our venue for the

third time in just 5 years. Our athletes will of course

have their own hands full competing in these

events and other events run by Athletics NSW

during the year. We wish you all and our teams the

very best for these events and encourage anyone

who hasn’t been involved in the past to give it a

try. Athletics NSW events are a great way, for kids

especially, to build confidence in your running,

make new friends in a team environment and, most

importantly, have fun.

We are very happy to welcome back all of our

returning sponsors and supporters for the year

ahead and look forward to sharing our successes

with each of them. They are as always a very big

a part of our overall team and without them all

we would be not be able to do the things we do

so well. Thanks especially to our major sponsor

of over 10 years, Wests Illawarra, and the Board

for continuing to have confidence in the healthy

lifestyle activities we put on. And thankyou to junior

sponsor BlueScope WIN Community Partnership,

Winter Series sponsor Mizuno and Summer Series

sponsor Transelect for your substantial support. In

return please continue to support our wonderful

sponsors in recognition for their support of your

club.

This handbook is designed to be your handy

reference on the club for the next 12 months. Other

updates, results and news items will be available

either via our e-Newsletters, Facebook or the

website at www.kemblajoggers.org.au Otherwise,

feel free to contact one of our committee members

if you need to know more.

Have a great year with Kembla Joggers in 2016!

Neil Barnett

Because of the ever present danger to road runners and possible ensuing litigation, Kembla Joggers are the holders of a public risk liability insurance policy. It is essential therefore, that certain rules and regulations apply. These rules and regulations are for the protection of the members and committee alike, and it is a condition of membership that they be strictly adhered to.

Club Rules &RegulationsKembla Joggers continues to offer members access to organised group training and coaching sessions. These sessions are conducted by our team of qualified, committed and voluntary coaches in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

Sessions are open to athletes of ALL abilities over the age of 8 years old who wish to improve their technique and form over sprints, middle or long distance running events.

Separately supervised squads for both juniors and seniors will feature at each session. To be involved athletes must be fully paid, active Kembla Jogger members.

Sessions will start SHARP at the times indicated. Athletes should arrive on time - as all sessions commence with warm ups to minimise the risk of injury. Sessions will run for approximately 1 hour.

Want to become a club coach?Kembla Joggers is committed to the development of athletes, coaches and officials within the club. To this end we have created an assistance fund to help with the financial burden of attending courses in gaining the necessary accreditation. When accreditation is gained and in return for this assistance, Kembla Joggers expects you to commit to the clubs organised weekly coaching sessions.

We will assist approved KJ members with up to 50% off the cost in gaining accreditation. The minimum age is 18 male or female. Cost of the course includes ATFCA Registration, NCAS fees, coaching manual, Track & Field manual, Modern Athlete & Coach Quarterly Journal, Professional Indemnity & Public Liability Insurance and GST. Registration with Athletics Australia is mandatory to coach at Beaton Park.

Please contact Dave Higgins if you are interested in becoming part of the KJ coaching team.

Some important considerations when using the track.1. SupervisionPeople using the facility on a casual basis do so without direct supervision from Beaton Park Leisure Centre Management. If you want advice on how to best use the facility, please see reception for athletic clubs and contact names.

2. Age of UsersAll children under the age of 12 years must be accompanied and directly supervised by an adult at all times when undertaking track activities. Children who are not training must remain outside the spectator fence.

3. Lane BarriersAll runners need to be aware that lane barriers will close off No.1 and 2 lanes completely during training times. This is to preserve the life of these lanes. The lane barriers will only be opened during competition meets and carnivals.

4. Spikes and starting blocksMaximum allowable spikes for use on the track are 7mm (9mm for long and high jumps). Starting blocks can only be used at the 100m/200m and 400m start positions and then only those blocks approved by the centre.

5. Priority Booking & Lane UseKembla Joggers have a priority track booking on Thursday evenings from 6.30-8.00pm. During this time we have priority use of the track. Prior to 6.30pm warming up should be done in the outer lanes or grassed area so as not to interfere with other athletes who have paid to use the track for training purposes. Refer to the sign at the track for further details on lane use. Please comply with these arrangements, which allows many users to safely train on the track.

6. Track EtiquetteTrack etiquette on training nights demands that athletes should be aware of other track users. Other athletes may be running fast repetitions in the same lane and approaching from behind. Always move out when a runner calls out “track”. Any athlete wishing to use the track on any of the following scheduled club competition days, must first obtain permission from the designated club to do so. Athletics Wollongong (Wednesday evening

from 5.30-8.30pm), IBS (Sunday afternoons from 1.00-5.00pm) & Wollongong Little Athletics (Friday evenings in summer from 5.00pm – exclusive use).

7. Track SafetyMany athletes from other clubs use the infield for throwing events. All athletes should make it a habit to NEVER WALK ACROSS THE INFIELD in either training or to get to the start of a race. Use the track instead.

8. SpectatorsSpectators must stay off the track and infield area at all times. Spectators should remain behind the spectator fence or sit in the grandstand facility.

9. Admission FeesAn admission fee is payable at the front desk when entering the Leisure Centre. A coloured armband will be given to you and must be warn when using the track. Multi-visit cards are available. 2016 fees: $3.10 Children/Concession, $5.20 Adults, $0.70 Spectator.

10. Coaching of AthletesAll coaches coaching other patrons must hold current coaching qualifications and provide them to the centre. A monthly coaches fee must be paid as set by council. Unqualified parents may only coach their own children.

Page 14 - 2016 Kembla Joggers Handbook Page 15 - 2016 Kembla Joggers Handbook

2015 was an outstanding year for Kembla Joggers with many athletes prominent at all levels of the sport with individual State and National champions in cross-country, road and on the track. Some of the best results came also from many of the KJ teams that competed in the ANSW State Winter Premiership and at the State Relay Track championships held in November. Madeline Heiner also had an outstanding year with many victories on the road and track during 2015 resulting in her becoming the National Champion over 5000m on the track. Unable to defend her track championship over the 3000m steeplechase, due to other commitments, Madeline proved to be the faster qualifier in Australia over this distance for the Rio Olympics in addition to qualifying for the 5000m. Josh Torley also represented Australia over 3000m in the Oceania Games in Samoa and put an exceptional performance against some of the best athletes from around the world, including several top Kenyans.

Whilst Madeline was winning the Australian Track Championship for 5000m next door in the Sydney Track Classic many KJ’s were competing against some of the best junior athletes in the Australian Junior Track Championships at Homebush with some outstanding results. Difficult to name everyone who competed but Jordan Doris was supreme in the U16 800m, winning gold and also silver in the 400m to round off a fine double. James Constance surprised with a winning performance in the U17 3000m final and Josh Torley, running up an age group, almost won gold but had to be satisfied with silver in the U18 3000m final. The 3000m seemed to be a favourite event for KJ athletes with Matilda Offord, James Seal and Sam Griffiths all taking out bronze medals in their respective age groups and, not to mention, Brodie Mate also medalled in the 2000m steeplechase. At least another half-dozen competed in finals, two or three, such as Troy Chauvin, Scotti Hamilton and James Seal (again) just outside the medals in 4th place.

The ANSW Winter XC and Road Championships produced some pretty exciting racing and for the first time KJ’s hosted the ANSW Long Course XC championships. Despite wet weather and ankle deep mud it was a day to remember and KJ’s got great wraps from all the athletes and officials that attended the event. KJ’s was one of the most successful clubs on the day winning several team medals in most of the events with Josh Torley and Keely Small becoming worthy winners in their respective age groups. Overall, throughout the winter season, the club won six age group premierships spread evenly between junior boys and junior girls. From an individual point of view, Darcy Hennessy, Sam Griffiths, Keely Small, Josh Torley, James Seal and Tayne Ward won championships in their respective age divisions. A measure of the success of KJ’s over the winter season was the selection of over 30 athletes for NSW, including the schools, in the Australian XC Championships.

With the XC season fast becoming a memory, most KJ coaches and their charges concentrated on preparing for the coming track season. The 3000m track championships, as expected, drew a large contingent of KJ’s that impressed with their early form and winning or placing in several of their respective categories. Josh Torley had a fantastic run in the premier event of the evening - the Men’s Open 3000m. Against much senior athletes Josh was able to place second in the NSW championship in a personal best time of 8:11.84 a real achievement for one so young.

The highlight of the track season from a personal point of view is always the State Track Relay Championships held in November. There were some great performances at all levels with KJ’s winning gold in 5 events and a further 2 silver and 2 bronze out of a record total of 13 teams. Highlight was the performance of the U18 4x1500 team of Josh Torley; James Constance; Scotti Hamilton and Liam Henderson who just missed out on breaking a long standing record which had stood for almost 30 years. Unfortunately, torrential rain throughout the race scotched any prospects of breaking this record. One consolation was had this team ran in the Senior Men’s 4x1500 final in the same conditions they would have most likely pushed the eventual winners all the way to the finish and possibly won.

Finally, the All Schools Track Championships in Melbourne produced two KJ victors – Keely Small with double gold in the U16F 800 and 1500m championships and Jordan Doris repeating his success at the National Junior Championships, earlier in the year, with gold in the U16M 800m championship. Josh Torley decided to skip the school championships by competing in the De Castella 3000m Championship at the same venue and confirming the great future he has by finishing in fourth place.

This coming year, 2016, should bring further success to KJ athletes in ANSW events over the full year including the hosting of the State Short Course XC Championships at Integral Energy Park, West Dapto. Look forward to you competing. Contact Dave Barnett or Dave Higgins if you want to enjoy the feeling of running in the great KJ teams that we will be fielding for 2016.

UniformsRegistered club athletes are required to wear their club uniforms in all ANSW championship events. Some items of KJ clothing are not part of our official uniform, so please check with our clothing sales officer. Plain navy blue shorts of any brand are considered acceptable for club uniform, other coloured shorts are NOT acceptable. Current ANSW numbers are required to be firmly fixed at front and back for the duration of the current season. The sponsors name needs to be clearly shown.

KJ Selection Guidelines for ANSW RelaysAthletes must confirm their availability one week prior to the race day. All available athletes will then be ranked in order to determine the top 4 runners to make up the first male and female A-Team. Anyone who notifies the committee of their availability after this time will be put into a pool of athletes who will be used to form B-teams, or to make up teams in other age-groups.

Once teams are selected, it is the duty of each team manager to communicate this to his/her athletes. No-one else should pass on information about selection or placements to avoid possible confusion. The order of running in a relay event should be done in consultation with all team members and the team manager.

Teams will be formed from available athletes within each age-group. If an age-group has spare runners for whom a team cannot be formed, then these athletes may make up teams in another age-group for which they are also eligible.

Any athletes who wish to be selected in an open category should communicate this to the open team manager as early as possible. The selection committee

reserves the right to alter the teams under certain circumstances. It is a policy of Kembla Joggers that club teams are to be formed before regional teams.

Race Day Check ListDon’t forget:• Your uniform.• Your registration numbers (you can’t compete

without them) – keep these for the whole year.• Suitable shoes.• Entry fee (if required).

Do:• Be there at least one hour before your event.• Let your team captain know you have arrived or if you

are likely to be late.• Encourage all club runners, young and old, male and

female.• Have a good time!

ANSW & AA Race Program2016

THE KEMBLA JOGGERS are proud to support our junior ranks which continue to grow with record numbers every year. The completion of our club house and cross-country venue at West Dapto has attracted even more interest, not only in the junior ranks but the club as a whole.

We are committed to our junior development initiatives and view them as playing a key role in ensuring the club’s continuing and future success.

Put quite simply, our juniors of today are our seniors of tomorrow!

The emphasis for KJ junior activities has and always

will be on participation and fun. All ages and abilities are

encouraged to compete, even Mum and Dad can run with their kids (if

you can keep up!). There are shorter events over 1 and

2km courses for kids 10 years and under. Longer events are

also provided for the older, more developed junior athletes.

Being a KJ Junior is GREAT because your child gets to participate with other juniors in safe, well organised events. All KJ juniors are treated like winners just for having a go. There are always heaps of vouchers and other prizes up for grabs. Plus there is the opportunity for any KJ junior to participate in one of the many KJ junior teams at the ANSW Winter Series events, this creates wonderful group identity.

DistancesThe maximum race distance juniors can contest on KJ race days is as follows: 10 years and under -2km, 11 years – 3km, 12-14 years - 5K, 15-16 years - 7K, 17 years - 10km, 18 years - no restrictions (age is taken as at 31st December). This also applies to Thursday night track events.

PointscoresThere are 4 pointscores events for the juniors to compete in for end of season trophies and awards. They are the 1km, 2km, 3km, and alternative race pointscores. The pointscore system is based upon consistent improvement throughout the season and totals up the athletes best 10 scoring races for the season. Points are awarded for each race an athlete competes in and compares the athlete not only with his/her best times but also the performance of the other athletes. To maximise the chance of finishing high in a point score, it is advisable to choose a distance to compete in for the whole Winter Series and stick to that event, ie points scored in the 1km point score are not transferable to the 2km point score etc.

Participation AwardsJuniors competing in 10 events listed in the Junior Pointscore Series and the ANSW Winter Series Program will be eligible for a special participation award and is presented at the Junior Presentation Day in September. Regardless of the number of ANSW events competed in, all juniors must compete in a minimum of 8 events listed in the KJ Junior Pointscore Series to be eligible for the participation award.

Registrations & Start TimesJunior registrations will close at 15 minutes prior to race start time. All juniors must register at the Junior Registration area prior to the race including all juniors competing in the longer alternative events. Race start times are listed on the opposite page.

Junior Assistance FundThe Club has in place a scheme which provides support for financially disadvantaged juniors requiring assistance with registration fees, entry fees, uniforms, travel, shoes etc. For further information please get in contact with Patrick McPhillips. Other funding is also available through the KJ Athlete Development Scheme – see page 20.

Other Events for JuniorsKJ juniors are most welcome to compete in other KJ races in addition to those on the Junior Race Program. Please remember though that age restrictions apply to certain distances – see opposite page.

Junior Track RacesJuniors also have their very own track events which are held at Beaton Park every Thursday evening from 6.30pm. Distances include sprints, 800m, 1000m, 1500m & 2000m. For full details of KJ Junior track races refer to the Track Program on page 13.

KJ Junior Teams & ANSWThroughout the summer and winter ANSW competitions the KJs form many junior relay teams. Categories include U12, U14, U16, U18 and U20 for both boys and girls. Please note that the age for competition with ANSW is at 31st December. Refer to the ANSW handbook. e.g. if a junior turns 12 in that year they run in the under 14 age group. If a relay team cannot be formed in an age group, individuals may still compete by running the first leg of the relay. Again the emphasis is on participation and FUN. Kids enjoy these events because they get to mix with the other junior KJ members, how fast or slow they run is not important, they get to be part of a team and, of course, they win the odd medal or two. It’s great fun so get your kids enrolled before the ANSW Winter season kicks off in April. KJ juniors also have the opportunity throughout the2016-17 summer to compete in Athletics NSW events, to help hone their athletic skills. The Treloar shield allows KJ’s members to compete in athletic events from U14’s and up. They can also compete in the ANSW Country Championships in January each year with events starting at U10’s. KJ’s can organise your ANSW membership.

2016 Junior PointscoreSeries

Albion Park Little Athletics Centre operates out of the Croome Rd Sporting Complex Albion Park Rail at John O’Dwyer Oval and has 240 members for the 2015-16 season. There are about 50 Kembla Joggers juniors that are also members of a local little athletics centre. These athletes have had some outstanding personal

achievements which they believe has benefitted from being able to continue competing during the summer with Little Athletics. There is a strong social connection between these children which supports the Little Athletic commitment to family fun and fitness.

What is Little Athletics? It is a uniquely Australian / NZ junior sport, centred on modified track and field events. Depending on age, children take part in such events as: sprints, middle distance, hurdles, jumps (long jump, high jump, triple jump) and throws (shot put, discus and javelin).

Who can participate in Little Athletics?Children between the ages of four (4) and seventeen (17) years can register. Parents, Grandparents and friends can also be involved by helping with the various events. Registration begins in August.

When does it happen?Little Athletics is primarily a summer activity, running from September through to March. Albion Park meets atJohn O’Dwyer oval from 5.15pm on Friday evening during this period.

How do I get involved? If you would like to get involved in Little Athletics, visit www. aplac.org.au, or email infoaplac.org.au. You can also visit NSW Little Athletics website at www.laansw.com.au for information. APLAC also has a facebook page you can like. KJ’s members are more than welcome to give assistance in officiating and coaching at Little A’s events.

Dual MembershipIn a joint initiative, Athletics New South Wales (ANSW) and Little Athletics and Association New South Wales (LAANSW) have made the pathway to senior athletics easier. Dual registration provides the opportunity for any athlete aged 11 - 16 to experience senior athletics, while still retaining their links with Little Athletics. Kembla Joggers membership is the ideal way to keep fit and active throughout the whole year and ANSW membership is FREE to Little Athletics NSW registered athletes who are members of KJ’s.

APLAC & KJ’sAs Little Athletics is limited to U17’s it is important to APLAC to assist our members in continuing their enjoyment of athletics. Kembla Joggers is one of three senior athletics clubs in the Illawarra and the closest to our club. As part of our effort to make the transition easier for our Little A’s members Kembla Joggers 18yrs + members are welcome to compete in any events on Friday nights during our season at John O’Dwyer Oval with the U15-U17’s age group. APLAC will also be hosting two Thursday night track events during the year where APLAC members will be able to participate close to home.

Wollongong’s premier community fitness event is on again and your club is proud to be the principle organiser and promoter. The major sponsor of the event is The Greater.

The 5km footrace and fitness walk takes in some of the region’s finest scenery passing along Cliff Rd and returning along the seaside cycleway past North Beach, Belmore Basin, Wollongong Light-house and Wollon gong City Beach. The male race record is held by Youcef Abdi (14.21) and the womens by Kerryn McCann (15.49). The course is “AA Certified Accurate”. Age restrictions do not apply in this event. For the first time in 2016 a 10km will be held called the Kerryn McCann 10.

To be able to make the event such a success the KJs needs the support of as many club members as possible for marshalling, pre-race setup, late entries, age-category tables, timekeeping, data entry etc. Please let us know if you are able to volunteer some of your time. Call Dave Higgins on 0412 641 317 if you can assist.

The KJs would like to thank all sponsors and supporters for making this great event possible. The proceeds of the Fitness Five have been directed to local charities since the event was first held in 1990, raising over $100,000 in total. Charities to benefit have included Camp Quality, the Childrens Ward Appeal, Ebony House, Cram House, the Beaton

Park Grandstand Fund, Wollongong Hospital Oncology Ward and the Beta-Imager Appeal.

The 2016 Greater Fitness 5 will again raise funds for the West Dapto Cross-Country Park Project Fund while the Kerryn McCann 10 will support the McGrath Foundation.

2016 Greater Fitness 5 & Kerryn McCann10The Kembla Joggers Social calendar for 2016 is set to be an exciting and jam-packed year! Many club members – both senior and junior – attend regular social events, in particular the trivia Night and Presentation night. If you have joined the club this year don’t think that racing is all that we have to offer! Come and spend some social time with KJs, mix, mingle and have a great time, who knows you may even find out how your competition feels after that last race!

Be kept up to date on all things social through the website, Twitter and Facebook. Look out for some exciting new social opportunities your social team is working on this year. Feel free to approach any of the social team for information on upcoming social events or to suggest any new and fresh ideas.

KJ EventsThey come for the race but they stay to socialise! Kembla Joggers events have always been a great social gathering for the club. Whether it’s the Summer Series, Thursday Night Track or Winter Series, if they’re not racing they’re talking! Hang around at the weekend events for a free cuppa and biscuit (if we’re lucky some great fruitcake!) and kick a ball around to knock out that lactic build up! The clubhouse provides the ultimate social racing experience with the canteen, open grass area, patio and music to get the heart pumping!

Friday FeastsFriday feasts have, in the past, been a great family friendly part of the KJ social calendar. As we have not had a social secretary on the committee for the past year, we have not had anyone available to coordinated these events. Please feel free to put your hand up to organise these fun nights…or an alternative social event!

Annual Trivia NightHeld at Wests Illawarra the 2016 Trivia Night will be held in June. A fun (and sometimes, in a fun way, competitive) night served with pizza and finger food. It’s always a great night out! Tables are limited so payment on booking is essential before the night. You can form your own table of 8 max or book as a single or couple and we will slot you into a team. The KJs monster raffle is also drawn throughout the evening and proceeds of the event support both the Club’s Athlete Development Fund and the Cross-Country Park Development Fund.

Presentation NightGet set to enjoy a great night out amongst friends. The 2016 Presentation night will again be held at the clubhouse in October, with wonderful catering by Aqua Restaurant. This is the BIG night where all of the season’s award winners are announced including winners of all of the Pointscores, Most Meritorious (Golden Boots) Award, Athletes’s Athlete Award, Most Improved, Encouragement and Participation

Awards, Clubperson of the Year and the prestigious KJ Medal. For a full list of awards and previous award winners go to the KJ website, click on the About Us tab and follow the link on the left hand side to Award Info & Winners. Keep an eye out on the KJ website, Twitter or Facebook page for more details closer to the event.

City2SurfThe World’s Largest Fun Run, The Sun-Herald City2Surf will be held on Sunday, August 14, 2016 so be prepared to book you, family and friends on the KJs Premier Illawarra bus to this amazing fun run and social event. For an all inclusive price (TBA closer to date) you will get a return bus trip, BBQ lunch, salad and drinks and a spot of shade under the KJ tent. Don’t need to worry about getting to the start line or finding a park! Relax and enjoy the atmosphere as 85, 000 + entrants run by Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach. Enough leg room to have a snooze on the way back!

Brewery BashThe Brewery Bash is held in December as part of the Summer Series and is usually the last race before Christmas. It starts and finishes at the Five Islands Brewery, situated at the bottom of Crown Street behind the Wollongong Entertainment Centre. The event is followed by free drinks and nibbles at the Brewery, which is open to families. What better way to enjoy a lovely summer evening and catch up with everyone before Christmas!

ParkingParking is limited at many KJ race venues particularly at Mt Kembla. The trick is to arrive early to secure the best spots. Whatever the case, please ensure you park safely and always lock your doors. Please be careful parking at West Dapto races as some events may be in progress on the entry road or XC trails which cross the road into the park. When parking follow the directions of the parking attendants.

Race RegistrationThe Golden Rule – arrive early. We recommend that you arrive AT LEAST 45 mins before the scheduled race start times regardless of whether the race is a handicapped or mass start event. That way you have plenty of time to warm up and avoid long queues at the race registration tables.

The cutoff time for race registrations is strictly 15 minutes before race start time. Runners arriving after this time will be started from the backmarkers position or given a time penalty. If you know you are going to arrive late then it is fine to arrange for someone else to collect your handicap start time for you. Otherwise let the Handicapper know prior to the event.

Your handicap start time will be issued to you on an adhesive label. Please keep this handy by sticking it to your running shorts etc so that you always know what time you are due to start the race.

Make sure you are fully familiar with the course before each race by checking the course maps etc located on the Notice Boards and elsewhere in the KJ Handbook.

Warming UpTake care when warming up. The race may already be in progress so please keep clear of other runners who have set off from earlier handicap start times. As always watch out for vehicular traffic. The same road rules apply for warming up as they do during the race – see KJ Race Rules on page 6.

Race StartA race briefing will commence 15 minutes before race start time. It is important that you are present for this as information regarding course condition, any late changes, hazards etc are announced at this time.

This should give you an idea when you will be due on the start line. Runners will be advised 5 minutes before the races are officially started.

It is always your responsibility to be on the start line at your allocated handicap start time. It is advisable to be at the start line about 1 minute before you are scheduled to start.

Race EtiquettePacing other runners in trophy events is generally not encouraged. Keep an eye out for your fellow runners and provide encouragement where possible. Keep smiling and have fun.

See KJ Rules and Regulations on page 6 for information on race conduct.

ClubhouseThe club now owns a fantastic new clubhouse which is there for your benefit and enjoyment at the West Dapto venue. Showers, toilets, change facilities, function hall and canteen will be in use at all events. Please do your bit to keep the facilities clean and offer to help clean and pack up etc whenever possible.

ToiletsPermanent toilet facilities are available at all venues with the exception of Mt Kembla where a Portaloo will usually be provided. Water NSW does not allow us to use bushland for this purpose including any areas along our race routes.

Feeling Unwell? If you are feeling unwell the week prior to any event you are best advised to get proper medical advice before deciding to compete. There is always a chance that you might be able to fulfil your marshalling duty commitments if you contact the marshal organiser beforehand.

If you begin to feel unwell, dehydrated or become injured during an event it is recommended that you stop and advise the next available course marshal who will then call for assistance on the 2-way radio.

Extreme WeatherThe club now has a policy of cancelling, reclocating or reducing the distance of club events if high temperatures or other extreme weather conditions prevail. Please consult the KJ website for up to date information prior to each event.

Race DayInformationMedicalUpon registration KJ members are invited to inform us of any medical conditions that could possibly require treatment as a result of their running activities. This is optional and all disclosures are kept entirely confidential.

The KJs have a fully equipped and comprehensive First Aid kit and defibrillator which are available at all KJ events in the vicinity of the start/finish area. Only persons with Senior First Aid qualifications should use the kit or defibrillator and a list of names of authorised users is provided inside the kit. See a committee member if you need any medical treatment.

Drink plenty of water before every event. Start hydrating early on the day of the event and from about one hour before the race is due to begin, take frequent sips of water to maintain fluid levels. Water stations are provided in all KJ Winter Series events longer than 5km.

It is recommended that you don’t eat any substantial amounts of food in the 3 hours prior to racing.

Mt Kembla VenuePlease observe the regulations in place for the Mt Kembla venue as set out by Water NSW – see Water NSW property code of conduct on page 32 of this Handbook. Riding bikes or walking dogs etc on Water NSW property is not permitted. If in doubt please ask a committee member on the day.

ChildrenKids are welcome at KJ events but please remember looking after them is always your responsibility, not ours. KJs expect that all children are supervised by their parents or guardians at all times. Chidren under the age of 14 are not allowed to accompany marshals to on-road locations.RubbishPlease assist us by taking your rubbish home with you. Bins or garbage bags are provided at all events.

SpectatorsSpectators on road courses in vehicles should observe normal traffic rules and keep out of the path of runners competing in the race. Care should be taken to keep off running trails for all off-road courses.

IncidentsAny incidents or near misses observed during a race should be reported to the Race Organiser immediately after the event and on an Incident Report Card which will be available at the Recorders Table.

MP3 PlayersFor your own safety, ipods, MP3 players or similar devices requiring headphones are NOT PERMITTED to be worn in KJ events.

Races with Timing ChipsTiming chips are now provided in most Winter Series events. These will be handed out upon registration and must be returned in the buckets provided at the end of the race. Timing chips should be securely fastened to your shoe using your shoe laces or cable tie. Avoid running over the timing mats except at the start and finish of the event.

Races without Timing ChipsWhen finishing a race follow the marshals instructions and listen out for your finish position when provided. Make sure your finish position tag corresponds to this number. Always take a finish position tag – failure to do so results in major time recording problems. Try and stay in the order of finishing from the finish line till you reach the person issuing the position tags at the end of the finishing chute.

Please take your position tag to the Recorders Table without unnecessary delay.

Race ResultsAny trophies to be awarded will be announced shortly after the race. Results will also be posted on the KJ website, usually within 24 hours of each event.

Post-Race RefreshmentsStay behind and enjoy the race refreshments which are provided free of charge. Other supplies can be purchased from the clubhouse canteen for West Dapto events.

Need Help?If you need assistance of any kind at KJ events just ask one of the friendly committee team, who will be seen wearing a special KJ committee shirt. They will be only too willing to help so don’t hesitate to ask.

Q. What is the KJ Handicapping System? The aim of the handicapping system is to place runners of all abilities on an equal footing in any KJ race to which it is applied. Before each event our computer program calculates a handicap time for each member based on times previously recorded during the current season. Your handicap time ensures that slower runners than yourself are given a head start while quicker runners give you a head start. Handicap times are calculated so that, in theory, all runners should finish precisely at the same time. This means that regardless of your ability you have as much chance of crossing the finishing line in first place as any other runner in the club – it just depends on how well you run on the day.

Q. Are all races handicapped? No. Generally shorter events under 7km, Club XC Championships and the Relays are mass start races. The computer program later calculates your position as if the race had been handicapped and awards points accordingly.

Q. How is my handicap time calculated?First, the computer works out your predicted time for the race, ie the time you are expected to run. This is calculated using the two “best times” you have recorded during the current season. A time you record becomes one of your “best times” if it happens to be quicker than your predicted time for that event. These times are then used to calculate your predicted time in following races until bettered again.

Special scaling factors are used to convert your predicted time from one distance to another taking into account factors such as distance and course difficulty. Your handicap time, ie time you start the race from, is calculated as it relates to the slowest runner. So if the slowest runner’s predicted time is say 56:00 (handicap = 0:00) and your predicted time is 44:00, then you will have a handicap time of 12:00. Your handicap time in the first 2 events of the season may be calculated using times recorded in the previous season.

Q. Joe Bloggs ran a quicker time than I did in the last race. Why did he get a head start on me in the next race?Although recording a quicker time than you in the previous race, it is quite possible that Joe, like yourself, failed to run quicker than his predicted race time. Even if he did, your “best times” may still be considered quicker than Joe’s. Consequently Joe will still manage to get a head start on you until he records race times which make his predicted time

quicker than yours. If you think that your handicap time is incorrect or unfair feel free to discuss it with the handicapper. But please remember, the handicapper’s decision is always final.

Q. I have finished near the rear of the field for a number of races. Why?It is possible that in some previous race you have recorded a very respectable time which is now used to calculate your handicap time. Maybe you are now having trouble retaining this good form or perhaps you have been injured or sick. Whatever the case feel free to discuss it with the handicapper if it is bothering you.

Q. What if I’m returning from illness or injury? If you are concerned this will affect your form you are entitled to apply to the handicapper to be rehandicapped until such time that you regain form. However during this time you are not entitled to accumulate race points or win any trophies based on handicap performance.

Q. Can I run off a different handicap time if I want to?As you would expect you are not permitted to run off an easier handicap than you have been given but you are quite welcome to run off a harder one providing you advise the handicapper first.

Q. Are race times recorded in non-pointscore events used for handicapping other races? No. This includes all alternative shorter races, summer series races, relays, funruns etc. Therefore you can break world records in these races if you like without them having any impact on your handicap. However if the only race you have competed in is one of these events then we will use that time until you finish a senior pointscore event..

Q. What if I run much quicker than I was predicted to do?A small points penalty deduction may apply to competitors who run much quicker than their predicted time. The time you do this by before a penalty applies varies with race distance, eg for 8km the buffer is usually 2:00. This means if you are predicted to run say 32:00 for 8km, any time you record down to 30:00 is without penalty. However a small penalty will apply for times recorded by you quicker than 30:00, ie more than 2:00 quicker than your predicted time. The penalty is deducted from normal points awarded to you for that race. This is not designed to penalise you for improvement, rather to discourage the occasional runner who intentionally

Everything you wanted to know about the Kembla Joggers Handicapping and Pointscore System but were too afraid to ask !

Handicapping & PointscoreInformationimproves over the season from a low base in order to accumulate maximum points.

Q. Where can I check my Pointscore tallies? All pointscores will be posted on the club noticeboards before each race and on the club website.

Q. How do I qualify for trophy winning events? To win any trophy awarded to first across the line on handicap in the Hangover Handicap, AC Mitchell Memorial or Tony McMichael Memorial events you must have previously competed in at least 3 club events during the current winter/summer season. This does not apply to trophies awarded to the first male and female home. Other conditions may sometimes apply.

Q. How are points awarded for the Club Pointscore?Points are awarded on an incremental basis proportional to the number of finishers in each race. First across the line on handicap receives 250 points and last 50 points. For example, if there are 100 finishers, the number of points will decrease by 2 for each place, ie 1st = 250, 2nd = 248, 3rd = 246, and so on. If there are 50 finishers points will decrease by 4 for each place etc. First-time runners are allocated nominal points for their first event. Alternative shorter races and relays are not included in the pointscore. A similar system is used

for the Junior Pointscore. Elite pointscore points are awarded as follows: 10 points (fastest), 9 points (2nd fastest) etc, and 1 point (10th fastest).

Q. How many races count towards the pointscore? All pointscore races are used in the provisional pointscore posted on the club noticeboard at each event. The final Winter Pointscore released at the end of the season on Presentation Night is determined by eliminating the worst 3 scoring races for each competitor during the Winter Series. These can include races where you failed to attend and received no points at all.

Q. Do I receive points for marshalling duties?Yes. 180 points are awarded for the first compulsory marshalling duty and 150 points if you are required for a second or third time during the season. Please remember members who fail to complete their marshalling commitments are ineligible to win any club awards or pointscores, or accure points.

Q. What if I suspect an error in my pointscore tally? All care is taken to provide an accurate pointscore for each runner however occasionally an error or omission may occur. Please notify the club handicapper either by phone or on race days should you suspect an error.

The good work by club members in maintaining the West Dapto clubhouse and Cross Country park has continued in 2015 with many highlights again worth noting. Both the clubhouse and the course have received excellent usage and from club members and visitors.

Continual upgrading and maintenance of the cross country course include

• installation of a new closed circuit TV system in the clubhouse and WIFI availability

• clearing of weeds beside the fence on the eastern end of the Darkes Road boundary

• additional drainage work on the eastern side of the wooden bridge in the middle of the course

• substantial spraying, weeding and mulching of all gardens to improve appearance

• ongoing removal of fireweed from many sections of the total course area

• widening of the start area in front of the clubhouse

• introduction of the new 3km course loop thus eliminating the doubling back section of the previous route

• continuation of tree planting by Dave Barnett mainly in existing gardens

• installation of tree guards by Dave Barnett

• the ongoing improvement of the course surface generated by regular mowing by Roy Francis and David Church

This year was marked by heavy rain in March and April causing postponements of several club events and school carnivals. Undoubtedly the major event was the holding of the ANSW Cross Country Championships on 20 June 2015 with over 600 competitors again testing the limit of our facilities but was greatly appreciated by our visitors. Heavy rain just prior to the event made the course a true XC event with the clubhouse hose working overtime removing mud from runners at the finish of the races. A major effort was carried out during July and August sanding the badly affected areas of the course.

The course hosted 6 school carnivals as well as 9 club events during the year with excellent attendances. The 5th annual Nowra challenge race was held in August 2015 and was well supported by both clubs. The continuation of Sunday morning training sessions (Sun Runs) still very popular as is the excellent breakfast afterwards.

The clubhouse also enjoyed excellent patronage with committee meetings, seminars, training courses, social functions, junior presentation day as well as a registration venue for club races. Two ANSW presentations were held in the clubhouse were well attended as was the club’s senior presentation night (expertly catered by Aqua Restaurant staff).

The canteen under the control of Anne Asher and Wendy Weeks continues to be popular and contribute to club funds. Roy Francis assisted with clubhouse maintenance activities including minor repairs and coordinating OH&S inspections. Roy has now retired from these activities and the club sincerely thanks him for his great work over the last 5 years. The ongoing use of regular professional cleaners has also kept the clubhouse in pristine condition.

In July work commenced by the Water Board contractors laying the new Horsley sewer main under part of the course. The work was completed in December with some rehabilitation work carrying over into 2016. Some inconvenience resulted during the second half of 2015 with some minor course changes resulting from the unavailability of the area south of the access road at the back of the car parks.

Further projects planned for 2016 include further widening of the start area, further topdressing of additional parts of the XC surface, further cleanup of lantana and fireweed in the course area, further trimming of garden bushes to improve appearance and completion of drainage improvements on some low lying areas of the course..

Thanks must go to the many club volunteers who contribute in various ways either in course setup for events or with ongoing course and clubhouse maintenance to keep the wonderful facilities in good shape. Their efforts in the park and the clubhouse are appreciated and enjoyed by all the club members and visitors.

Management TeamThe Clubhouse & Cross-Country Park Management Team Includes Peter Issa, David Church, Neil Barnett, Dave Higgins, Elad Haas and Ben Scollary.

Important – please read these instructions carefully prior to turning up to perform race marshalling duty at a KJ event or other event the club may be providing assistance at.

• All marshals must be aged over 18 years old and financial members of KJs.

• All members of Kembla Joggers must perform a marshalling duty as requested by the Race Organiser on up to 3 occasions in the year (max 2 occasions in Winter Series). Members are encouraged to nominate a race to marshal during the winter season. Those who have chosen not to nominate a race will be randomly nominated by the race organiser. See club Rules and Regulations.

• An SMS message will be sent to you in the week prior to the selected race informing you of your rostered day. If for any reason, on receipt of your SMS, you are aware of not being able to make it on that day please inform Elad Haas on 0406 080 855 via text only with your name, or email [email protected] ASAP to enable a substitute marshal to be contacted.

• Failure to turn up on your rostered day will result in you not being permitted to compete in club events nor will you accrue further points until you have fulfilled your marshalling duty.

• Members are to personally undertake their marshalling duties. They are not transferable to other members.

• On race day marshals should arrive at least 45 minutes before race start to enable distribution of high visibility personal safety equipment, radios and briefing by the Race Day Marshal Organiser. Please report to the Chief Marshal Dave Barnett in the start/finish area on arrival.

• Marshals should comply with the club’s on-road marshalling safety procedures available on the KJ website and at KJ events.

• Marshals must always direct runners to run on the right hand side of the road, eg. running facing the traffic. However marshals may be given special instructions to direct runners to the left side of the road in special circumstances.

• Marshals cannot stop traffic unless having undertaken the appropriate RTA approved training course. Your only power is to direct runners and to stop runners when it is unsafe to cross the road. You are encouraged to warn traffic of approaching runners by way of flags, signs etc.

• Marshals should not stand in a position which puts them at risk of being hit by traffic or which could cause traffic to swerve or brake unnecessarily.

• Marshals should report any incidents observed

during the race to the Race Organiser or Marshal Co-ordinator and fill out an Incident Report Card at the Recorders Table following the event.

• Drink station rubbish including all discarded cups should be collected and returned to the finish area following the race.

• Communication on the course – 2 way radios must be used only for the purpose intended and for emergencies. Do not use the radios for socialising.

• All gear should be returned promptly after each event. 2-way radios should be handed personally to the chief marshal. Please leave the radios turned ON until they are returned.

Using the radio:

1. THINK about what you need to say.

2. LISTEN to ensure there is no existing conversation over the radio.

3. PRESS and hold the talk button.

4. SPEAK hold the radio about 5 cm from your mouth. Speak ACROSS the microphone not into it.

5. RELEASE the talk button. No one can transmit when you have the button held down.

Radio Protocols:

• Making a call – say – “to whom you are calling twice, then identify yourself, come in” eg finishing line, finishing line this is Joe Bloggs, come in.

• Receiving a call – say – “your name, receiving”

• Ending a call – say “over” to indicate you expect a response.

• Ending a conversation – say “your name then OUT” to let the receiver know you have finished.

• When you are in your marshalling position, make a radio contact with the chief marshal enable the race to start.

• Do not use the radios unnecessarily. There may be an emergency on the course and you could delay any help required. Do use the radios for informing other marshals of where the leaders and back markers are and any race progress reports you may feel will interest spectators at the finishing area.

OTHER AWARDSParticipation AwardSponsored by Transelect.KJ senior athletes who compete in ALL winter series events (including compulsory marshalling duties) will be awarded a participation award on Presentation Night.

KJ MedalsThe KJ Medal is awarded to recognise performances of true merit in which a KJ has performed above and beyond what could reasonably be expected of them. There is no limit on the number of KJ Medals which may be awarded in any year. These awards are for KJs of all abilities and are presented on Presentation Night annually. Performances must be in a KJ event or in a State Championship or other similar event in which the athlete is representing KJs. KJs are invited to nominate any member performances for consideration to any member of the medals committee.

Athlete’s Athlete AwardThis award is presented at Presentation Night and is voted on by all KJ members who have attended at least 50% of club events. The award is based on similar principles to a ‘best and fairest’ in team sports and recognises athletes who give their absolute best, regardless of ability. KJs of all abilities are eligible.

Most Meritorious AwardThe winner of this award receives the Golden Boots Trophy the feature of which are Fred Zatopek’s famous boots. The award recognises one or more performances by an athlete which are considered to be of significant individual merit. Unlike the KJ Medal, the performances do not necessarily have to be in a KJ event. Presented annually at Presentation Night.

AC Mitchell Memorial ShieldPresented to the winner on handicap of the nominated 4mile event at Mt Kembla. In memory of former KJ Roy Mitchell’s father and donated to the club by Roy in 1977.

Eric Brown TrophyAwarded to the winner on handicap in the annual 9 mile event at Mt Kembla. In its inaugural year this trophy celebrates the significant contribution made to the club by life member and former Vice President, the late Eric Brown. Presented to the winner of the iconic 9 mile we can think of no better race to run in memory of Eric, on what was his favourite course, inspiring him to become a serious runner many years ago. Footnote - it might be our most arduous event but Eric’s favourite sight the ‘Hollywood Finish’ will be expected from all weary runners down the final straight.

G-Man Bolt Memorial TrophyPresented to the winner on handicap of the annual 10 mile (16km) event at West Dapto. This event held in memory of Andrew Godsman who we lost suddenly in 2002. Andrew was a great clubman, a great person and a great friend to many KJs. The KJs meant a lot to Andrew and the 10 mile was one of his favorites, being the first club race he ever recorded the quickest time on the day.

Running Nut TrophyAwarded to the winner on handicap of the KJs infamous Hangover Handicap race held on New Year’s Day each year. The distinctive trophy was designed and crafted from timber by life member Bill Williamson and first presented in 1993.

W-Squared and Flying Fox TrophiesFirst awarded in 1996 the W-Squared trophy (designed and crafted by Bill Williamson) is presented to the winner of the handicapped final of the W-Squared 3000m Track Series held at Kerryn McCann Athletics Centre. The Flying Fox trophy is for the winner of the junior 1500m final held on the same night. The series usually takes place mid-year and athletes must compete in the preliminary races to be eligible for the final.

KJ Marathon ChampionshipsTrophies are presented to the first male and female in the nominated KJ Marathon Championship race each year. This year’s event will again be the Canberra Marathon on April 12, 2015.

YDOIDOIT TrophyPresented to the winner of the Summer Series Pointscore. Points are awarded on a silent handicap basis. The trophy was first awarded in 1998.

Kembla Joggers keeps a list of records set by its members both for its courses and for track events in the handbooks, annual report and the website.

Records are generally updated within 7 days of the event being run. If you believe you have set a record and it has not been acknowledged then let the club know. To claim a record the runner must provide verification of the event, including time, age group and date e.g. published internet results. Further your time must better than the time on the published time.

The runner must be a financial member of the club on the day of the race. Guest runners’ times won’t be recognized as records, nor can the runner pay fees AFTER setting a record and claim it retrospectively, even on the same day.

Track records criteria INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING• The runner must be a financial member on the day of the race.• Age group records will be determined as age of the day of the race• Kembla Joggers Thursday night track events• ANSW, AA & IAAF events where the athlete is representing Kembla Joggers• NSW & National Schools Championship events where electronic timing is used.• Invitational events where electronic timing is used (subject to committee approval on a case by case

basis).

Track Records DO NOT INCLUDE:• ANSW & AA events where the athlete is representing another club, even if a Kembla Jogger’s general

member.• Little Athletics carnivals & championship events.• Events conducted by other clubs where hand timing is used.• School carnivals including regional carnivals etc. where hand timing is used.

Times recorded electronically are recorded accurately to the hundredth of a second and are designated (e) e.g. 49.23 (e) . All hand timed track events are rounded up to the next tenth of a second e.g. 49.23 would be recorded as 49.3 as per IAAF rule 10.

THE RECORDS LISTED ON FOLLOWING PAGES are those of registered Kembla Jogger’s competing in Kembla Jogger track races, or registered Kembla Joggers who are also affiliated with ANSW and representing the Kembla Joggers Club in approved ANSW/AA events. They are accurate as far as is presently known. However, it is possible that some performances have been overlooked. If any member thinks that they have bettered one of the records listed below, they should contact Hazel Brown with full details so that the records can be amended. Similarly, if a registered member breaks one of the records, it is their responsibility to contact the track records officer (Ian Tague 0418 537 760).

Unless otherwise stated, the times below are manual. As there is a greater chance of error when recording manually, all electric times within one full second of a manually recorded record time will also be listed. If an electric time equals a manual time, the electric time will be accepted as the record as it is deemed more accurate than the manual time.

In accordance with Athletics Australia policy, all manual times are rounded up to the nearest tenth of a second. Manually timed events can only record to the nearest tenth of a second. Electric times record to the hundredth.
