This year marks the club’s 35th anniversary and what a year it has been. To help

celebrate, the committee has de-cided to specially print and mail out copies of the Annual Maga-zine to all KJ members. This is the very first time we have done this and hopefully in the years ahead the magazine will con-tinue to improve in both quality and content. Earlier in the sea-

son the club was awarded, for the second year running, the Country Club of the Year title at a packed Athletics NSW Awards night in Sydney. This is something all club members should be proud of, especially those of you who have contributed to our successes by helping or volun-teering with us in any capacity. We also kept our gold level club status in the ANSW annual clubs review which again highlights the high standards we are maintaining as a club thanks to your continued support. Our victory against the SCA over access to our traditional courses at Mt Kembla was a big moment for us. Interestingly the Minister re-sponsible for that decision has since gone on to become NSW Premier! As we reflect on the last 12 months I would like to share with you some of the main highlights.

Membership & ParticipationThe winter season continued to build in popularity and we maintained decent crowds right through to the end of the program when traditionally numbers drop right off. In total the winter season attracted a record of 2488 race registrations, for an average crowd of 166 per club event, also a record and up 10% on last season. This compares very favourably with per event figures of 150 in 2005, 155 in 2006 and 150 last year. Mind you we were blessed with much better weather than the last few years which cer-tainly helped. Access to the Mt Kembla venue via Kembla Heights remained closed however everyone managed to cope and the crowds were very strong here. Summer Series participation rates were also consistently high at an average of 78 per event, a big record. Our Mountain Running and Track Series events attracted strong support too. Overall club membership once again pushed above a lofty 500 members with strongest growth continuing from family memberships. Let’s just say the future is definitely looking bright!

JuniorsThe momentum in the growth of junior participation levels did not abate this year for one second. The average junior crowd in winter was a staggering 92 per event, that’s up 10% each year now for the last 4 years. In summer, at-tendances rose to an average of 27 per event. With a total of 1344 race registrations for winter, junior partici-pation accounted for 54% of our race day attendances during 2008. As we always say the juniors of today are our seniors of tomorrow so we have no doubt that the strategy of supporting our junior programs is a very wise

one. Never have I seen such a cheerful, behaved and well adjusted bunch of kids as we do at KJs, a credit to all you parents. And if our activities can have just a minor posi-tive influence on how they turn out as adults, not just ath-letes, then we will be well pleased, job done. Thanks as always to our wonderful junior sponsor Suzanne O’Brien and Uncle Pete’s Toys for supporting our programs. Many thanks also to Murray Smith, our Junior Development Of-ficer, and his enthusiastic band of assistants. Our junior training squads kicked off for the first time this year and proved to be a hit. No doubt they will continue to grow in popularity thanks to our coaching crew of Geoff Stalker, Pia Angelucci, Ian Hatfield, Noreen Parrish and Robbie Bolton.

West Dapto Cross-Country Park ProjectMore about this in the separate report elsewhere in the magazine but it’s fair to say things have moved a little slower with the clubhouse than we would have liked this year. Having said that, it has provided the benefit of giving us more time to raise funds and get things sorted out. I am hopeful we will be in a position to start construction in the first half of 2009.

SponsorsAs always our fantastic club sponsors have given us all the support we need and more during the last 12 months. This support is pivotal to our success without any doubt and we thank every one of them greatly. In particular, hats off to Wests Illawarra, our major club sponsor, who de-spite facing difficult times in the club industry at present have managed to increase their support of our club. CEO Phil Bragg and the Board are big supporters of ours and we are so very lucky to have such strong backers. We welcomed on board new sponsors Barnes Interiors and Aqua Café in 2008. As with all sponsors we hope the as-sociation is a long lasting one. Your reciprocal support of these businesses ensures that they aware of how appre-ciative we really are. For a full list of the wonderful busi-nesses that have supported us over the past 12 months see the sponsors page inside the front cover.

Club FinancesWith every year that passes the club’s financial position grows more robust. Even with the purchase of the new van last year we are ahead of where we were two years ago. Our West Dapto Fund has close to $100K and is kept completely separate to club operating funds. The Athlete Development Fund has over $5,000 and has provided support to many of our representative athletes who have traveled interstate or overseas during the year. The Trivia Night and Raffle raised $6,000 which was split evenly be-tween both aforementioned funds. Membership fees rep-resent less than a third of club income now days, thanks to sponsorships, volunteering fees and in-kind support etc, and this is why we can keep the cost of membership so low. With our strong financial position the club intends to upgrade some of our systems and equipment.

Other EventsThe Fitness 5 is our showcase event and once again John Burns as Race Director did a magnificent job along with the Fitness 5 organising committee. For the second year running the numbers competing were well up on the previous year. The support from main sponsor the Illa-warra Credit Union ensured a record amount raised, in fact almost $9,000 for the day! This money was directed to our clubhouse project and is likely to keep doing so into the future. The NSW Mountain Running Champs were hosted by us earlier in the year and, despite a few people getting lost on the course, went down well with all competitors. The NSW Road Relays we hosted in August was another outstanding success and attracted athletes from all over NSW. The massive turnout of KJ volunteers for this day never ceases to amaze me and I thank you all for helping to make it such a great event, including our Race Director Dave Higgins.

Athlete AchievementsIt’s been another stellar year for our athletes across the whole range of events we cover, including road, cross-country, track and mountain running. We had no fewer than 5 Australian representatives during 2008, including Ryan Gregson (World Junior Track and Cross-Coun-try Champs), Michael Roeger (Paralympics), Stephen Brown, Barry Keem and Madison Rutter (all World Moun-tain Running Champs). Well done to you all and also to our growing list of NSW reps, especially from our junior ranks. For the fourth year in succession the club clinched the NSW Winter Club Premiership. The 2007 achieve-ment was recognised this year with $7,000 worth of free SKINS products which we made available to all athletes who contributed towards the effort. In the ANSW age-group premierships we took out the following: U12M, U14M, U16M, U20M, 35+M, U18F and 35+F, and came a close second in the Open Men’s. Anita Keem, in her first full year of running, took out the NSW Distance Runner of the Year title with some outstanding and consistent form. Barry Keem winning the Six Foot Track Marathon was a highlight as were Ryan Gregson’s scintillating NSW and Australian record efforts on the track. In fact, well done to all KJ athletes, fast and slow, for your efforts throughout the year.

The Year AheadWith the construction certificate for our clubhouse just weeks away at the time of writing the focus for the next 12 months is obvious. Once this occurs there will be ne-gotiations with Council over lease arrangements, quotes to obtain and big decisions to be made, before the first sod is even turned. The new cross-country trails will be lengthened so that one large loop is possible. The club will remain committed to providing good quality racing programs to all members but will also need to look to-wards alternatives in the event that any courses become unusable in the future. Upgrading equipment and improv-ing our timekeeping methods will also be a priority. It is hoped too that a new on-line registration and payments system will be in place before next season. Apart from that, it’s business as usual.

Thank youThere is a thank you list elsewhere in this magazine which attempts to thank the many people who have helped the club in some way during the year. I would also like to thank the committee as a whole for their complete dedication and passion towards the successful running of KJs. You have all done a wonderful job and without this commitment I certainly wouldn’t be able to sustain my po-sition in the team. Special mention to Murray Smith, this year’s Clubperson of the Year, and the many regular non-running members who turn up to help each week. Roy Francis and Hugh Motbey are two such people who never fail to help out at West Dapto working bees when the call goes out. Darryl Weir is as always inspirational. And to each KJ who turns up for marshalling duties, thanks for assisting to make things run much more smoothly on race days.

In closing, I would like to wish each and every one of you the very best for the upcoming holiday season, including Christmas and the New Year. We hope you have a great time but also maintain your passion for keeping fit in the lead up to next season.

Best wishes,Neil BarnettPresident

Female Elite Pointscore 2008 - Lorraine HinceUnlike the male elite Lorraine Hince won the Female Elite Se-ries by quite a large margin. Lor-raine took part in all races and deserves her victory. Lorraine has been running with the club for 4 seasons now but many of the club members would not know her from earlier years when she broke many age group records that are still unbroken under the name of Lorraine Davis. Now back at the club and married with kids Lorraine’s 2 children Lydia and Luke did well in the junior events while mum showed she has lost nothing over the last 10 years in speed and easily taking out the Female Elite Pointscore. Of Lorraine’s top performances, her 82.06 in the ½ marathon stood out, 2nd fastest time in KJ history second only to Kerryn Mc-Cann.Lorraine was pushed along with fine performances by Alisa Williams and Sue Feigler. Junior runner Sarah Carli, along with Sally Musgrove, Paula Crinnion, Anita Keem, Carolyn Dews, Narelle Smith and Janice Henderson completed the top 10.

Male Elite Pointscore 2008 - Murray SmithIn a very close battle Murray Smith held on to just edge out Paul Micale to win the 2008 Male Elite Pointscore. Only 2 points was the difference in the end. With the ju-nior duties to attend to on KJ race days Murray struggled to have warm ups before the events but when he did race he did very well. Paul Micale although dogged with some leg injuries, held on well for 2nd place. Stephen Brown only ran 7 races and was fastest in all 7 but did not run in enough events to top the pointscore. Done Martinoski, Joshua Hewitt, Neil Barnett, Elad Haas, Dean Boyton, Barry Keem and Marty Weston all did well to finish in the top 10.

Over 60 Pointscore 2008 - Andrew KrajewskiOver 20 runners competed in the over 60 years of age events in the winter of 2008. Points are awarded on who is the fastest for the mass starts and first to finish in the handicapped events, points are based on where the runner finishes compared to his/her over 60 competitors. This years winner was the ever reliable Andrew Krajewski, who for years has

been as consistent as the sun rising. Over the years in KJ history Andrew will prove to be one of the most con-sistent runners the club has seen. Now over 60 Andrew has not let age get in the way of progress. You will still see Andrew out there in most KJ races running his legs off. Andrew is one of those runners who is always seen at a KJ race, an ANSW race, a Beaton Park Thursday night race and all the local Fun Runs. Andrews best race this year was in the 10-mile event in a time of 72.28.This series is in its 5th year and for the past 4 years the winner has been Peter Asher. Peter this year finished in a gallant 3rd place mainly due to an injury that prevented him from running at his peak. Warren Evans again had a great year, and Ian Tague also did well considering that he missed a number of early races. Derek Moriarty, Mi-chael Hickman and Tony Maloney all had a fine year and placed highly.

Winter Pointscore and Mt Kembla Pointscore 2008 - Trent DawsonTrent won both the Senior Pointscore and Mt Kembla Pointscore. Trent has been run-ning with the club for 3 years and has shown good consis-tent form. Trent’s times for the Mt Kembla races show why he took out both trophies, 43.00 for 10km, 27.01 for 4mile, 61.24 for 9mile, the later time on the test-ing 9-mile course was fantastic. The 27 year old should have many good seasons with the Kembla Joggers. Also pushing for the Winter Pointscore, was Joshua Hewitt, a very useful 400m hurdler in another life, who had an excellent season, improving with every performance. He was followed by evergreen KJ, Paul DeNobrega, who runs all events honestly and will, therefore, always be in with a chance of taking out the trophy.

Kembla Joggers 2008 Athletes Athlete & Club Person Of The Year - Murray SmithMurray Smith is a long serving Kembla Jogger and has been an active committee mem-ber for the last 2 years. He has continually volunteered throughout the year to help the club out wherever needed. He plays a major role in all junior races and related activities and is one of the dedicated “West Dapto Warriors” that have transformed the course

from the cow paddock it was, to the expanded venue it is today. His assistance with the progress of the club-house has been invaluable as has been his involvement in ANSW race organisation, athlete support and event organisation. In addition to all this, Murray is one of our finest athletes who will always give up a race (no matter what the stakes are) to help the club out when needed. Murray has also shown some great form this year and this has been recognised by his peers by being voted 2008 Athletes Athlete. This award is based on similar principles to a ‘best and fairest’ award in team sports and recog-nises athletes who give their absolute best, yet do so in a quiet and unassuming manner. According to your votes, Murray has done just that!

Most MeritoriousGolden Boots Award 2008 - Ryan GregsonRyan Gregson has had an amaz-ing year, with a series of NSW and Australian records in the very competitive U18 and U20 catego-ries. In November 2007, Ryan ran one of his most impressive races to take out Craig Mottram’s long standing U20 3000m record, in a brilliant time of 8.01. More success followed with Australian School’s U18 1500m and 3000m titles and Australian U20 1500m and 5000m records in March 2008. This was sufficient to gain Ryan selection in the Junior National team for the World Cross Country Championships in March and later for the World Junior Track Championships in July, where he ran bril-liantly to finish 5th,within one second of the winner.Further mid year success came with wins in the Australian U20 8km cross country championships and an excellent run in winning the 9km Bridge Run, where he beat Ben St Lawrence by 10 seconds. And hot off the press, Ryan ran a very impressive 3.41.14 to take out the Australian Universities 1500m, setting a new record.Ryan is a fine ambassador for our club and is a wonderful role model for our younger club members.

2008 Encouragement Awards -

Ian TagueInevitably, Father Time overtakes us all. One exception is the good Doc, Ian Tague, who has consis-tently turned back the pages of time with some outstanding runs in club events this year. Without doubt he has improved with age and his times have put many of his peers in the shade. Despite many ups and downs over the years, Ian has hung in there and the club would like to encourage and acknowledge his great form.

Kellie OwenKellie started with KJs as a guest in Feb 08 having just “started run-ning”. Kellie has trained hard over the winter and has consistently improved on her performances. To her credit, she completed 2 half marathons in very respectable times. She is always willing to do her share with marshalling and has become a very social member of the club. Having joined ANSW, she proved to be a determined competitor who showed up even if there was not a full team for her to be part of. She has truly embraced what being a ‘KJ’ is all about. It is this great attitude which we fully support and promote.

Jane ClearyThere has been an increasing trend of parents of KJ juniors joining the club and Jane has been one of those parents who thought they may as well “have a go” seeing they come along to all the events. Jane always competes eagerly and with a smile. She has taken on extra training to get her 3km time down by over 2mins and she at-tempted many of the longer races in the winter program. She trains and competes with a willingness to do her best every time and sets great example for many others to follow. We are only too happy to encourage her to continue.

2008 Kembla Joggers Most Improved Award - Greg MottGreg has been a gutsy competi-tor for a couple of years. Greg always gives 110% all the way to the finish line. On the track this year Greg ran a P.B. for 3K in February of 10:39 mins. This was lowered to an impressive 10:01 mins in July. At the ANSW State 10K Road Champs Greg ran 37:52 which was a massive 2 minute improvement on his previ-ous best. During the year Greg lowered his 5K road time from 18:47 to 18:03mins. Con-gratulations to Greg Mott winner of the Kembla Joggers Most Improved Award.

700 runners took part in this years Summer Series. 239 or 32% were made up of junior runners. The summer saw 2 races cancelled, the Gong run and the 5km Stuart Park which had no other option because of thunder and light-ning and teaming rain. The structure of the races required in the pointscores was then changed from the best 7/10 to the best 7/9 races. 3 past winners and a runner virtually making a fresh start to running after a long break due to a severe back injury, finished in the top 4.

Steve Van Gils won the series in 2002/03 and along with wife Katrina just had their 4th child in December. Steve’s time with their 4 children and work commitments have meant little time to train but Steve is such a good ath-lete that before long he was running 11.25 for the 3km at Stuart Park and 19.45 at the 5km WEC. Steve was kept busy in his warm ups with daughter Imogen and son Bryce both running in the junior races with dad beside them. Steve finished 4th in this series.

Gary Smith won the series last year and kept that same form and his best race of the year was a 21.18 at the IYC. Gary Finished in 3rd place this year.

Andrew Rutty had not run with the club for over 3 years due to a back injury that he told me way back then would stop him from running forever. However Andrew fought his way back and progressed nicely taking times of 10.52 at the 3km Stuart Park and 18.48 at the WEC. These times are not far off Andrews pre injury running times and we can expect a lot more from him in the future. Andrew finished in 2nd place.

The winner of the 2007/08 Ydoidoit Trophy is……..???? John Wilton. John also is the first winner of this trophy in 1997/98. May I say well done, the last couple of years for John have been rough but John stood up through it all and now can claim to be the first KJ runner to win it twice, 10 years apart. John was behind in the points from Andrew Rutty but a charge in the last 2 races 23.34, at Hill 60 and 21.01 at the 5km XC at West Dapto, moved John right into winning calculations. Both of these race times would register sub 20 minutes on a normal flat course. Well done John.

Finishing in the top 10 were Alisa Williams who again showed what a classy female athlete she is with an 11.09 at the 3km Stuart Park, and a 19.37 at IYC. Neil Barnett, well what can I say, Neil is just the predictable athlete, always runs the same time every year never misses a race and is always in the top 5 or 6. Johnathan Clenner, is also a very good runner and always tests out the quick runners. Darrin Smith held the mantle of most consistent quick runner. While Stephen Brown, Jared Poppett and Paul Micale were not around Darrin stood up and ac-counted for himself. Long time KJ

female athlete Elivia Comer again showed that she is still a very good athlete. And ever green Summer Series sup-porter Glenn Hayward who again not only figured in the pointscore but also took a leading hand in the organising of the races.

A special mention to 2 runners who I thought stood out in the Summer Series. Bridget Rutty who after years watched husband Andrew and kids in all their races de-cided to put on the running shoes and ran a respectable time of 14.40 in the 3km and 25.50 in the IYC 5km. And a big congratulations to Chris Fraser who was the only runner to complete all races.

Winners in the Junior events, starting with the juniors run-ning in the senior races, were Gareth Mumby 1st, Blake James in 2nd and Kasey Mumby in 3rd place. Congratu-lations to Gareth as he also won the Hangover Hcp trophy on New Years Day. Both Blake and Gareth showed the seniors home in the Hill 60 race with Casey 2nd fm and 1st fm jnr.

Joshua Hayward took out the Junior 2km Series with a very close battle from Julius Cleary and Tom Rutty, only a handful of points separated the trio after the last race.

Carlie Hayward provided a winning double for the Hay-ward family taking out the Junior 1km Series. 2nd place went to Imogen Van Gils and 3rd place was filled by Kris-ten Llewelyn. Congratulations to all juniors who took part in the series.

I would like to thank John Wilton for his continued help during the summer. John has been on hand now for a number of years and has played a big part in the success of the Summer Series. Thanks also to Glenn Hayward, Roy Francis, Eric and Hazel Brown, who when asked, helped, Ian Hatfield and Co. for setting up the 5km XC course at Albion Park, Dave Barnett for setting up the new course for New Years Day, Neil Barnett for keeping us all on guard, Dave Higgins for all the membership forms, and last of all Darryl Weir our web master who kept us all informed. Also thanks to the volunteers who put their hand up to marshal when we were short.

I would like to take the opportunity to inform the runners of the Club that I will be taking a break from the race organising role during the summer and will hand over this role to John Wilton who has agreed to take on the role. I have absolutely loved this role since early 1992 when I learnt all the tricks from Barry Armstrong. I still think about how lucky I was to have an organising role in the greatest athletic club in the world. I will still help John out in a minor role, but I do request that we do need help in the Summer Series and if you can help out talk to John or myself at the races.

See you at the races, Gary

Winter Senior PointscoreWinter 2008 again proved a very successful year with record numbers and record pointscores. The winner Trent Dawson proved that with con-sistent from and with the help of the Kembla Joggers group training win-ning the pointscore title was not out of the question. Trent was in the top 10 all year making the most of the points in the later races. 2nd place went to Joshua Hewitt who showed tremendous form throughout the year and came very close to taking the title himself. 3rd place went to the very consistent Paul DeNobrega. All three runners proved that if you can keep your form and run all the races plus marshalling duties the title is there to be taken.

Finishing just outside the top 3 and in the top 10 were Alan Onions 4th and Pasco Coppolaro 5th, Lorraine Hince 6th, Kellie Owen 7th, Jana Mumby 8th, Murray Smith 9th and rounding off the top 10 Pia Angelucci.

Now, to add some incentive. Most of these runners never missed a race and all close to winning the title at some stage of the Winter Series. Congatulations to the winners and top 10 getters plus all the other runners. Next year keep your form, run all the races and marshal when required and you may just win the 2009 Pointscore title.

Mt Kembla PointscoreThe 10th running of the Mt Kembla Pointscore saw 34 runners

participate in all 4 2008 Mt Kembla winter races. To win the pointscore you must have raced all 4 events with marshalling duties the only excuse. The overall winner was Trent Dawson who also took out the Senior Pointscore event. 4 con-sistent races was enough to secure the victory. Just behind Trent was Joshua Hewitt who came close in both this event and the Se-nior Pointscore. 3rd place went to the evergreen Pasco Coppolaro who has placed in this event many times. Murray Smith, Kellie Owen, Pia Angelucci, John Mezedi, Paul DeNobrega,

Jana Mumby and Lorraine Hince completed the top 10.

Male EliteIn a very close battle Murray Smith held on to just edge out Paul Micale to win the 2008 Male Elite Pointscore. Only 2 points was the difference in the end. In charge of junior duties on KJ race days, Murray struggled to have warm ups before the events but when he did race he did very well. Paul although dogged with some leg injuries, held on well for 2nd place. Stephen Brown only ran 7 races and was fastest in all 7 but did not run in enough events. Done Martinoski, Joshua Hewitt, Neil Barnett, Elad Haas, Dean Boyton, Barry Keem and Marty Weston all did well to finish in the top 10.

Female EliteUnlike the male elite Lorraine Hince won the female elite series by quite a large margin, Lor-raine took part in all races and deserves

her victory. Lorraine was pushed along with fine performances by Alisa Williams and Sue Fei-gler. Junior runner Sarah Carli, along with Sally Musgrove, Paula Crin-nion, Anita Keem, Caro-lyn Dews, Narelle Smith and Janice Henderson completed the top 10.

Over 60 PointscoreOver 20 runners competed in the over 60 years of age event in the winter of 2008. Points are awarded on who is the fast-est for the mass starts and first to finish in the handicapped events, points are based on where the runner finishes com-

pared to his/her over 60 competitors. This years winner was the ever reliable Andrew Krajew-ski who for years has been as consistent as the sun rising. Andrew however did not have it all his way and was pushed all the way by a rejuvenated Ray Mc-Cauley who sneaked past the age of 60 with-out anyone knowing.

This series is in its 5th year and for the past 4 years the winner has been Peter Asher, Pe-ter this year finished in a galant 3rd place

mainly due to an injury that prevented him from running at his peak. Warren Evans again had a great year, and Ian Tague also did well considering missing a number of early races. Derek Moriarty, Michael Hickman and Tony Maloney all had a fine year and placed highly.

Gee wiz, another year has passed and another batch on new Flying Foxes has joined the crew. We have something like 230 junior members aged be-tween 4 and 18 who have participated in anywhere between 1 and 100 KJ organised training/racing events in the last year. Thank you to all the par-ents for encouraging your children to participate in sports, such as athletics, that should set them up to be healthy adults. The Uncle Pete’s Junior Winter Series again attracted 100+ junior runners on most days to provide a great spectacle of sport. Special thanks to Uncle Pete’s for providing $100’s worth of vouchers and prizes for us to give away on our race & presentation days.

A big thanks to the KJ coaching staff of Geoff Stalk-er, Pia Angelucci, Noreen Parrish, & Ian Hatfield for organizing the junior training sessions this year. The time & the effort put in by these 4 shows in the improve-ment by a large number of our juniors. I encourage par-ents whose children (10+ yrs old) are looking to improve their running to bring them along to the training sessions (See handbook or website for days/times). Assisting all athletes achieve their best (and confidence in life) is a major driving force for the KJ junior committee.

Last summer a number of the older juniors participated in ANSW events such as the state track relays, and a num-ber of ANSW Club Premiership events held at SOPAC and other athletic tracks. The State Track Relays held over 2 days in mid November is a very fun event that brings together our junior (and senior) athletes to com-pete as teams of 4. Another track event that KJ’s was invited to (in March) was the Fletcher Track Marathon held at Bankstown. KJ’s sent a mixed team of guys/girls and juniors/seniors that had all who attended talking up returning next year to defend the trophy won. I know a lot of the juniors enjoy running with (and sometimes beating) the senior KJ athletes in training and racing. At the track on Thursday nights the KJ short series, relays, & handi-cap races were very popular.

The Uncle Pete’s Junior Winter Series went bush for a couple of weeks this year when Sydney Water would not

let us use part of their catchment area. Although parts of the Mt Kembla course were a little rough and muddy, these are true cross-country conditions and most juniors enjoyed the challenge. Next year there should be a new courses (3 & 4 km) at West Dapto that will take the juniors over the bridge and onto the land we lease from Blue-Scope. More handicapped events for next year will again give a variety to the KJ Winter Series races.

Over the winter we had 50+ juniors compete for Kembla Joggers in the ANSW Winter Club Premiership events held in Sydney, Nowra, and locally. My personal joy was seeing our U/16 and U/18 boys prominent at the front of the pack during both of the State XC events at Nowra and Abbotsbury. These boys are becoming a formidable group that should provide state champions over the next couple of years. KJ’s was again victorious in the ANSW Winter Series for 2008 which was a joint senior & junior effort. These events are a very social day with cakes baked/bought to feed the masses, & the day is usually followed by an early dinner (and race stories) on the way home. Congratulations to the 8 athletes who competed for NSW at the National XC championships (Geelong). Those athletes were Hamish Paine, Jessica Hull, Miles Waring, Ryan Gregson, Alistair Day, Madison Rutter, Christian Tozer, and Bart McPherson.

Personal thanks to club captains Pia Angelucci & Done Martinoski for their enthusiasm and sup-port to all KJ juniors. To Dave Higgins thank you for keeping the juniors informed of all things ANSW.

To all you Flying Foxes, keep up the training and you will be rewarded, stay positive, enjoy life (and your running), and I’ll see you next year.

The Kembla Jogger medal is one of the most prestigious awards that our club offers. A medal is awarded only for a performance

at either a KJ race or when an athlete is represent-ing KJs or NSW/Australia. It is for a performance, which is truly outstanding, in relation to that athlete and their previous performances. Therefore, a medal can be awarded to athletes of any ability, who have gone that extra mile in lifting their performance over and above what could be reasonably expected of them.

Below are previous winners:-

While there have been many very fine performances during the 2008 season, the committee this year have decided that none of them fit the criteria set out above, i.e performances over and above what you could reasonably expect of that person.

We have, in previous years awarded up to 8 medals in the one year, whilst in a couple of years, none were awarded.

Please keep up the great running in the upcoming season and hopefully, we will see a return to numer-ous medals being awarded at the next Presentation Night.

GeneralKJs Thursday night track meets continue to flourish, with good attendances each week, especially in the junior races. This has resulted in almost 30 track records being broken in the past season. The most prolific record breakers were Cathy Hewitt (6) in the female 45-49 age group and Joshua Head (6) in the male under 10 age group. All the record breakers this year deserve a pat on the back. They have really upped the ante for future KJs to aim for.

Jeans for GenesThis day is a fun night to support the Jeans for Genes Foun-dation. We requested that all competitors get into the spirit and wear full-length jeans during their 1-mile event. A truly great turn out of almost 50 runners and walkers backed up by their family and friends, raised $300.

1 Hour Track RunA very small but enthusiastic field of only 10 runners com-peted in the 1-hour track run. Ryan Burns ran furthest with 15.035km.

Junior Flying Fox 1500mIn the Junior Flying Fox 1500m Final more than half the field of 33 competitors produced Personal Best times. Casey Cleary was the clear winner managing to outfox (pardon the pun) the handicapper by smashing her PB by 1 minute 40 seconds. However, the rest of the field finished in a tightly packed bunch that kept the crowd on their feet right down to the last finisher.

W Squared 3kmThe W Squared Final was equally as thrilling to watch. Mitch-ell Hennessy, in his first year of 3km track racing, exhibited the tenacity and determination that many of the older KJ members would remember when Mitchell’s grandad, Jim, was one of KJs top dogs. As the field closed down on Mitch in the final lap he was able to stay composed and hold on for a well deserved win. The fact that again half of the field posted personal best times justifies the handicapping race format works.

Kidzwish Foundation Fund Raiser On June 2nd Kembla Joggers held a Fancy Dress Char-ity event to help raise funds for Kidzwish Foundation. The event turned out to be a great success with the club raising $345 for the charity. A large turn out of adults and kids really got into the spirit of the night and some of the outfits were truly amazing. A big KJ’s thank you goes to all the parents, children and helpers for their support and all their generous donations. Also, a very special thank you must also go to Kerryn McCann, the special guest for the night, for all her support and inspiring words to the kids. Kerryn came as a fairy, accompanied by her apprentice daughter fairy, Josie.

Kembla Joggers would like to thank the Beaton Park management for their ongoing support with our track

fundraisers. Beaton Park management allows free entry to all competing athletes on fund raising days.

KJs have achieved another outstanding result in the ANSW winter road and cross-country championships this year. This has been founded on the efforts of many due to the depth of the club across the board at all levels, from the junior’s right through to the seniors.

In the Club Championship, KJs were able to come back from an early deficit to defeat Sutherland by a reasonable margin at the end of the season, with the long distance cross-country at Willandra proving crucial. The final victory was sealed at the Road Relay Championships with the club winning a record 6G, 5S and 6B medals on a day of exciting racing over a fast Lighthouse course.

In the team’s premiership, our male junior teams won a startling four out of the five premierships from the U12’s to the U20’s. Many of our individual juniors went on to rep-resent the State in the Australian X/C championships with Ryan Gregson continuing his current form to become the Australian U20M champion and also to break many long standing age group records on the track, including those of his great role model, Craig Mottram. Ryan went on to represent Australia in the World Youth track champion-ships to record a 5th place in the 1500m final with less than a second separating the first five finishers. Ryan is just one of several top juniors coming through our ranks at the moment.

Other Australian representatives included both Stephen Brown and Madison Rutter, who acquitted themselves well at the World Mountain running championships in Switzer-land, particularly Madison, who ran well up in 16th place

overall. Others to equip themselves on the international representative scene were Barry Keem in the arduous world long distance mountain running championships and Michael Roeger who competed in the Paralympics in Bei-jing.

At a State level Anita Keem capped off a fine year by be-coming the NSW Female Distance Runner of the Year for 2008 with an excellent performance in all events that she competed in, rarely finishing out the top five in any of them.

From a team perspec-tive, the Men’s open team had its most suc-cessful season ever, finishing in the top three in every event, only to miss out on the premier-ship by the narrowest of margins to the even-tual premiers, Sydney Striders. The Women’s Open team also featured well and surprised most pundits by winning the State X/C champion-ship at Nowra, thanks to a fine individual run by Lorraine Hince, who came from behind on the final lap to take out 4th place and lead KJ’s to the gold medal. Men-tion must be made also of Janice Henderson’s run which just edged out three other runners from

2008 saw the continuation and expansion of Kembla Jog-gers Mountain running. Some of the highlights are as follows:

KJ Mountain Running Summer Series This series of 8 races during the summer was popular

with the hardened mountain runners with visitors from outside the Illawarra at every race. The “Stalkys Horrible Half Marathon” held in January attracted special interest with experienced Syd-ney Striders com-menting favourably on the challenge of the 400 metre climb from Figtree School to Mount Burelli. Tony Fattorini and Sophie Egan were worthy series win-ners.

NSW Mountain Running Champi-onships These Champion-ship races were held on the KJ uphill course commenc-ing at Figtree and

finishing at Mount Burelli on 20 April 2008. KJ Stephen Brown retained his title with an excellent run 1 minute 23 seconds ahead of Tony Fattorini and Brendan Davies. Australian Junior Champion Veronica Wallington led the females home well ahead of Lyn Delaney and Kerry Au-gustson. The junior divisions were won by Charlie Brooks and Megan Tumminello.

Australian Mountain Running Championships These Championships were held on uphill course at Mount Tennant ACT on 10 May 2008 with three KJs, Stephen Brown, Madison Rutter and Bart McPherson, competing. Stephen and Madison both ran well to place second in the respective Open Mens and Junior Females races so as to earn selection in the Australian team for the World Championships with Bart sticking on to achieve 7th place in the junior mens race.

World Mountain Running Championships These Championships were held on the uphill course at Crans Montana Switzerland on 18 September 2008. Madison Rutter showed that she is one to watch with her 23rd place out of a field of 67 runners. When com-bined with Veronica Wallington’s 6th place, the Australian team placed 4th – an excellent result. Stephen Brown was troubled by the rainy slippery conditions and finished 101st out of a field of 158 starters with the Australian Champion Scott McTaggert managing 29th place.

The popularity of the mountain races continues to in-crease with the 2008 -2009 KJ Summer Series being well supported and the 2009 NSW Championships scheduled for 22 February 2009 on the Mount Kembla uphill/down-hill course. All runners owe a big vote of thanks to Geoff Stalker who is the driving force behind the local events.

Mountain Running Report 2007/2008 By Dave Higgins & Geoff Stalker

teams who were in contention for the coveted first place.

The Senior Men’s 35+ and Women’s 35+ teams also won their age premierships. The depth in the Men’s 35+ age division was such that it was able to strengthen the men’s Open team, on several occasions, without lessening its own chance of winning. The U18F junior team also ran with dis-tinction to be never headed in their quest for the team premiership in their age category.

With one season over there will be a brief spell over summer in which to relax and enjoy this year’s performances. The signs are already there that KJ’s will have the same determination and personnel to do even better next year.

This year’s 2008 Fitness Five Fun Run proved once again how popular this healthy lifestyle charity event is with a large number of both local and out of area runners. Each of these turned up to contest the course record, com-pete against fellow runners or just enjoy the run or walk. Weather conditions on the day were bright and cool, per-fect for running, with some 500 participants tackling the course. The existing male and female course records, held by Youcef Abdi (14.21) and Kerryn McCann (15.49) were not broken, with this year’s winners Sydney athletes Timothy Rowe, setting a blistering time of 14.28, and Lara Tam-sett first female home in 16.49. The first three male and female club members home were as follows: Male – Ste-phen Brown 15.06, Michael Roeger 15.59 & Paul Micale 16.44; Female – Anita Keem 17.49, Kim Dutkowski 19.57 & Jemma Chambers 20.01.

To make the event a success, Kembla Joggers requires the support of sponsors and the local business community. The event received continued sup-port from our local major sponsor, the Illawarra Credit Union and from supporting organisations including Wollongong City Council, WINTV, i98FM, The Illawarra Mercury, Rebel Sport and Beaton Park Leisure Centre. Club sponsors D&D and Wollongong Pure Water were on hand to provide additional important support. These sponsors generously supported the event either through financial assistance, advertising and promotion of the event and/or through the provi-sion of services such as vouchers, traffic control and refreshments on the day. Kembla Joggers

would like to thank all the event sponsors.

The event is organised, planned and executed by a dedi-cated committee, whose support is vital to the success of this event. This support includes the important role that club members provide on the day, turning out to provide the on-ground support and guidance, with the event re-ceiving numerous compliments and comments from both runners and sponsors on the professional approach the Club displays in managing this event.

This years Fitness Five Fun Run event raised over $8,000, with the proceeds being directed to the on-going estab-lishment of the West Dapto Cross Country Park project, in particular the clubhouse construction. This brings to a total of almost $90,000 that this event has raised for wor-thy local projects and charities since its inception in 1990. Next year’s edition will be the 20th anniversary of the Fit-ness 5 and promises to be an even bigger success.

Kembla Joggers Coaching 2007/2008

By Coaching Team

KJs commenced structured training for Juniors during the winter season. The club coaching sessions are conducted by accredited coaches - Geoff Stalker, Pia Angelucci and Noreen Parrish. The Tuesday seasons have been a great success with the help of Murray Smith and Tim Crinnion. Attendance is between 10 to 20 juniors and on the Thursday evening session, more and more parents and seniors are joining in. Regular participants have seen improved times, strength and stamina, by learning the correct running techniques. This is done with a combination of; agility drills, learning how to pace during a race, stretching before and after a run, and strengthening exercises. We make sure that a “fun” factor is a mandatory addition to each session to give variety and enjoyment to participants.

Junior training sessions are outlined below: you have to be a member of Kembla Joggers to attend these sessions. Recommended participant age is 10 years old. Tuesday 4.30pm – non daylight saving Winter Stuart Park Coach /Training 5.00pm – daylight saving Summer Stuart Park Coach /Training Thursday 5.30pm All Year Beaton Park Coach /Training Saturday 9.30am Summer Beaton Park Coach /Training Seniors training starts at the same time as junior on Tuesdays. Senior training includes Fartlek (Swedish speed play), Intervals and hill running and all abilities are catered for.

Another great KJ Social season has come to an end. This year, I tried to move Friday Feasts around to avoid clashing with ANSW and big KJ events and that proved successful, with an increase in the numbers attending at each dinner. We tried many different restaurants with the favourites being Nickelangelo’s and Ha Long Bay. We saw lot’s of new faces join us to have a laugh and a story or two..... or three. Friday Feasts will commence again from March next year.

ANSW events are largely attended by KJ fami-lies. We continued last year’s tradition of stop-ping for a meal on the way home after a hard day of running and cheering from our various locations. It is such a great thing to not worry about having to make dinner after a huge day out as; the ANSW days always were. This tra-dition will continue next year with out favourite locations es-tablished over the last couple of years.

Kembla Joggers trivia night held was held in July, raising much needed funds for the West Dapto Cross Country Park and athlete development funds. This year was no different to previous years, with the night being a great success. The teams fought it out tooth and nail. The KJ juniors forgot to get changed out of their PJ’s for the occasion and hand the crowd in stitches with a few of their goofy responses to very ‘serious’ questions.

The ANSW Road Relays has become a social event, starting with the awesome canteen food our generous KJ members supplied to sell on the day. Our friendly KJ juniors cheerfully sold cakes and hot food all day long. Again, we thank those who gave up a good chunk of their day to help out. The day always culminates with lot of runners and helpers going to dinner at Aqua, and as always, Anna delighted us with her

delights and we all left with full bellies.

The City to Surf always draw a great KJs crowd (2 buses full). The day started off with blue sky and sun, but quickly turned cold and stormy. We still managed to feed the troops and have a bit of a siesta on the grass before we got blown away. An awesome effort from our helpers on the day who cooked and cleanup and were the last ones home. Thanks

Kembla Joggers wine sales have gone very well again this year. It is available for sale at the bargain price of ten dollars a bottle. Tickle your taste buds with a delicious white or a divine red. The funds are put back into the club, so support the club that supports you.

Let me know if you have ideas for social events or locations to try for dinner. I hope to see you over the summer series and stay tuned for details of the ‘Brewery Bash’ on the 16th December, which is our official Christmas get together. Until next year, stay happy and safe, and happy running to all.

The clubhouse project moved a fair deal slower in the last 12 months but still with the achievement of some significant mile-stones. In April, the Minis-ter for the Illawarra, Dave Campbell MP, along with KJ star Ryan Gregson, turned the first sod for the local media to signal the commencement of the project. The $200K grant from the state gov-ernment and $100K from Council was also re-af-firmed on this day. It is anticipated that we will also be in a position to apply for federal government funding in the new year and a meeting with federal Sport Minister, Kate Ellis MP, has already been penciled in for her next visit to the region.

The clubhouse Development Application was approved by Wollongong City Council earlier in the year and since then they have been drawing up the detailed construction plans. The construction plans are expected to be approved within a few weeks of writing this article. This has involved obtaining a number of consultants’ reports on all things from drainage issues to bush fire risk. Our Stage 1 grant from Council means that all this work is being done free of charge by Council saving us many tens of thousands of dollars. So I guess beggars can’t be choosers, as they say, and we will be patient while the job gets done right. The good thing is this has allowed us more time to raise funds and fine-tune our planning strategies. Right now we are just about to hit our $100K fundraising goal and we will go beyond this into next year.

The clubhouse construction will require a group effort from many club members so your support will be absolutely criti-cal. This could include anything from volunteering your time at a working bee or two, to even offering in-kind support through your own business, or sponsorship. A number of

small business owners and trades qualified people in the club have already come forward to offer assistance and ad-vice. This is greatly appreciated and we will need to see a lot more for the project to be a success. Please get in con-tact with myself or Murray Smith if you would like to discuss your possible involvement any further.

The new Council Administrators have signaled changes ahead to the way community assets are charged lease fees so we can only expect they will want more money from groups like us. As I have always said, the club won’t progress to the construction phase until we are absolutely convinced that 1. the project is affordable, and 2. the facili-ties can be maintained into the future without any crippling impact on our normal operating funds. A number of meet-ings with Council have already taken place and we expect some more in the near future to stamp out something ac-ceptable to both parties.

The year also saw us use the new trails on the adjacent property for the first time. This involved the big project of building a bridge over the creek crossing and from all feed-back everyone was quite impressed with the new 4km cir-cuit. The bridge looks great and is so sturdy Hugh’s tractor is even able to drive across it without it even flinching! Well done to Murray and everyone who spent the day building it. Thanks also to Eric Brown for coordinating the mainte-nance of the trails during the year and the development of the new trails. Eric’s motivation for the project is contagious and we would be a long way behind if it wasn’t for his hard work. Next year we hope to extend the trails further so that one large 4-5km loop is established for our longer events. Don’t forget you are more than welcome to train on the trails anytime you wish, not just KJ events.

Its clear our most popular events are junior events held on race days at West Dapto. It is well worth all the effort when we see over 100 kids running on our courses with big smiles. No doubt in the future more and more schools will be using the venue for cross-country carnivals, and even, more than likely, state championship events. Next year the courses will be in even better condition so we look forward to many more great events during that time.

THANK YOU THANK YOUBy Hazel Brown

Neil Barnett, a life member and club president for many years and now officially a VET!! Everyone must by now appreciate the vast amount of time which Neil dedicates to KJs, making our club the best in Australia. In addition, this year, Jim has often supported Ann Asher when refreshments are required and Ann can’t make it.Eric Brown, life member, KJs vice president, member of the race organising committee and the medal’s committee. He is part of the Thursday night team, programs the Tuesday fartlek sessions and coaches with good humour, the athletes who take part in it. He has spent many, many hours this year putting out the flags and preparing the cross country course, including the big job of helping to build the bridge, so that it is in tip top shape for our races.Hazel Brown, life member and Public Officer. Hazel organises the Thursday night track races, helps Gary to issue handicaps and acts as recorder every Thursday night. She also organises the engraving of the trophies throughout the year. She is a non runner.Dave Higgins, club treasurer, who handles all of the monetary matters for our club, including investments. He is also the reg-istrar and contact man for ANSW issues and is great as a recruitment man. He has his finger on the pulse of ANSW, always there to maintain a KJ interest in the running of athletics in NSW.Hugh Motbey, although running very little of late, has been absolutely invaluable in creating the fantastic West Dapto XC course. He has put in countless hours in slashing paddocks and marking out new courses, in addition to be a major part of the creation of the bridge.Roy Francis who has rarely missed a West Dapto Working Bee this year. He has also been a great help in putting out flags at West Dapto when Eric was on holidays and been a great worker, getting the bridge project going.Well done Roy.Gareth Mumby, who has been a great help this year in assisting Eric and Dave Barnett to put out the flags at West Dapto.Wollongong City Council ... for their support & co-operation in preparing our cross-country courses & providing the land for the clubhouse., also for their co-sponsorship of the Fitness 5.Wests Illawarra, a special sponsors mention to our major sponsor, without whose recent support the club would never be in the position it is today.Gary Howard, our long suffering race handicapper, who endeavors to ensure that all athletes are treated fairly and are given the opportunity to win. It is a really thankless job that consumes many hours of work. No decisions are ever taken lightly and we should all be mindful of this fact. He has done an excellent job, as the many close finishes have shown.Darryl Weir, first aid officer, committee man, and web master, who has made a huge impact on our club this past year. Darryl is ALWAYS there before races to put up the tent and organise equipment and put it all away after the events. He drives the KJs van to City to Surf and sets up and cooks the BBQ afterwards. He has acted as club photographer, coordinated the hand-book and done anything else that needed doing. Oh that we had more members like Darryl.Darryl is a non runner (but we’re working on him about that!)Pia Angelucci, female club captain, social secretary, great worker for the junior committee, who entered the committee only last year and has proven invaluable. She has supported Hazel at the Thursday track meets and has now taken on a coaching role twice a week, getting good results.Narelle Smith, who has been a great help this year in monitoring our juniors, checking on their progress and supporting our junior development team.Kym and Rod Batten, the “dunny men” who are responsible for your comfort at Mt Kembla races. What a job, but these two do it for the club. Well done guys.Andrew Rutty and Steve Mlacic, who are so generous with their time. They have voluntarily driven KJs to the Sydney Half Marathon and City to Surf races, so that members don’t have the hassle of driving and parking. This fine gesture has saved KJ’s much money.Suzanne O’Brien, of Uncle Pete’s, for her wonderful support of Kembla Joggers Junior program.Ian Hatfield, who has been ever helpful in helping to set up a KJ’s coaching strategy Geoff Stalker who has organised courses and runs for the increasingly popular mountain runs and for his new role as a KJ coach, particularly for the northern suburbs.Noreen Parrish, for volunteering to help coach KJ athletes.Mark Everton, who has taken on the mammoth tasks in 2008 of both race organiser and marshal’s coordinator, both thank-less jobs. He has done them both professionally. Please make time to thank him for his efforts.Carolyn Dews, committee member and invaluable source of ideas and advice with regard to the establishment of our new clubhouse at West Dapto. Always cheerful and level headed, she is a valuable asset.

They have done an excellent job being super well organized and ever helpful.Robbie Bolton, a new comer to Wollongong and KJs, who nevertheless, quickly volunteered his expertise in coaching ath-letes, both able and disabled. Robbie has had good success in coaching Michael Roeger to the Paralympics this year.Greg Mackey “red hair, blue eyes and good looking”. He is a great help every Thursday at the track, keeping Hazel in line and the athletes on their toes.Ann Asher Our lovely “Tea Lady”, who tends to the needs of runners at each race.Brian Baird for casting his eagle eye over any legal documents that come our way and also for his support as a club spon-sor.Dave Barnett, organiser of special events, relay organiser, ANSW age group organiser, member of the Fitness Five commit-tee and regular helper at the track. Murray was instrumental in the organisation and building of the West Dapto course bridge. He often misses out on winter races if we are short of marshals as he can be relied on to fill any role.A very valuable member.Dave Brown, brother of Eric, not a KJ any longer, but who has helped to mark out the West Dapto courses every time we have raced there. Thank you bro.John Mintoff, for spending many hours of his own time to audit Kembla Jogger’s accounts, in order to ease the workload of Higgo.John Burns, committee man and director of the Fitness Five Funrun. John has been very supportive of our club and its many endeavors for the past few years and who has the knowledge and the energy to write effective road management plans for all of our road races.
