INSIDE THE NUMBERS

Debbie Black enters her fourth season as head coach of the Eastern Illinois women’s basketball team. Black was hired May 16, 2013 to take over the program following a long career as an assistant coach, most recently at Ohio State. While with the Buckeyes program Black helped coach the team to seven straight NCAA Tournament appearances including six Big Ten Conference Championships. Black has been part of 34 winning basketball seasons both as a player and a coach. She began her playing career at Saint Joseph’s University helping the Hawks make four straight NCAA Tournament appearances. After graduation in 1988, she played professionally overseas in Tasmania (1989-96). She played in the WNBA from 1999-2005 earning WNBA Defensive Player of the Year honors. Nicknamed “The Pest” Black is the only women’s professional player to record a quadruple double with 10 points, 14 rebounds, 12 assists and 10 steals in a game. Black’s career record is 25-61, 16-32 in OVC games.

The Panthers dropped their second game in a row their last time out falling to Stetson 72-55. The Hatters raced out to an early 15-2 lead to begin the game starting off the first quarter 6-for-6 from the field. At the end of the first quarter SU maintained a 22-8 lead. EIU did a great job of fighting the rest of the game matching Stetson shot-for-shot the rest of the game, but could not seem to break the 15 point cushion SU built up from the first period. Both Erica Brown and Allison Van Dyke finished the game scoring in double-figures with Brown leading the team with 17 points.

The Rattlers are looking for their first win of the season as they play host to EIU Tuesday after falling to North Florida and Marshall to open the season 0-2. FAMU is led by senior Florence Ouattara who averages 12.5 points over the first two games. Ouattara has also recorded four steals in each game to rank second in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference for her average. As a team the Rattlers are second in the conference with 21 offensive boards this year.

Tuesday’s game will mark the first ever meeting between EIU and Florida A&M.

• Erica Brown continued her blocking streak against Stetson finishing the game with two blocks to bring her streak to 16 games in a row. Brown now has nine total blocks this season which is third best in the OVC. She needs 11 more blocks this season to tie Toni Collins for fourth on the all-time career blocks list at EIU.

• EIU finished the game at Stetson 15-for-19 from the free throw line with three Panthers perfect from the charity stripe. Both Zharia Larson and Danielle Berry earned their first career trips to the free throw line against the Hatters combining for a perfect 6-for-6. As a team the Panthers are shooting 73.2 percent from the line to rank second in the OVC.

• The game against Stetson marked the first time this season a team has out shot the Panthers in the paint with the Hatters earning a narrow 34-30 edge over EIU. So far this season EIU is outscoring opponents 145-108 in the paint.
