The Misericordia Universitywomen’s tennis team qualified forthe Freedom Conference playoffsfor the sixth straight year.

Cassie Foy and Breanne Phillipswere both named All-Freedomand the Cougars enjoyed awinning season for the 10thconsecutive season.

The men’s team returns all seven lettermen from 2013-14for third-year head coach JustinMuthler, a former team MVP at his alma mater.

The women’s team has had awinning record in each of its 10 varsity seasons.

The women’s team placed secondand has never finished lower thanthird in seven seasons in the MAC.

The Anderson Center natatorium,home of the MU swim team,underwent a facelift in 2013-14that featured a new scoreboardand lighting.

Freshman Thomas Scott won two MAC championships whileAmanda Stammherr and Dani Blassboth claimed one MAC title.

Misericordia has produced two All-Americans, including Eric Sweeney,the 1999 NCAA Champion in the200 Butterfly.

Sophomore Ryan Doroshwas the Freedom Pitcher ofthe Year and earned All-Region honors along withclassmates Kyle Lindsay andMike Comerford.

The team participates in anon-traditional season during

the fall and traditionallyopens the spring season withtrips to Virginia and Florida.

MU plays its home games at Tambur Field, a beautifulon-campus facility that was christened during the 2013 season.

Darian Reimer led thewomen’s squad with aseventh-place finish at theMAC Championships.

GOLF

Senior high jumper Ashlee Wardenjoyed the greatest season inMisericordia history as she capturedboth the NCAA Division III Indoor andOutdoor High Jump titles.

Ward was joined at the NCAA outdoormeet by Hilari Norris and Amy Viti asMU had three NCAA qualifiers for thefirst time.

Andrew Nelson won the 400m MACChampionship to lead the men’s teamits best finish ever.

The Cougars compete on campus at the Anderson Outdoor AthleticComplex, a six-lane synthetic trackwith an eight-lane straightaway thatalso features areas for all majorevents, including steeplechase, pole vault and hammer throw.

In her second season ashead coach, ChrissyTrescavage – the firstlacrosse-only head coachin the program’s history –guided the Cougars to theFreedom Conferenceplayoffs.

Misericordia University is a member of theNCAA Division III. The largest of the NCAA’sthree divisions, Division III promotes a well-rounded approach to intercollegiate athleticsparticipation.

While Division III is best known by some forwhat it doesn’t offer – athletics scholarships –it has plenty to offer.

Knowing that Division III student-athletes playfor the love of the game, the D-III experienceis structured to help participants developfully as students, athletes and citizens.

Athletics participation at many of the 444institutions that comprise Division III allowsfor student-athletes to succeed in theclassroom and athletics.

That certainly is the case at Misericordia asstudent-athletes are often active in studentgovernment, residence life and other extra-curricular activities.

In addition, Division III playing seasons andclass schedules are designed to minimizeconflicts between athletics and academicsand promote academic success. This isevidenced by MU’s overall 3.17 GPA amongstudent-athletes and 182 MAC All-Academichonorees in 2013-14.

While Division III athletics programs promote a wide range of participation, they don’tsacrifice when it comes to competition. In fact,the NCAA sponsors 36 national championshipsannually at the Division III level.

Misericordia is one of just two schools in theMiddle Atlantic Conference to offer all 23sports sponsored by the MAC.

Misericordia has enjoyed its share of success since joining the Division III ranks in 1992. MU has captured 43 conferencechampionships and sent 22 teams to theNCAA Championships, including the women’ssoccer team advancing to the NCAA FinalFour in 2012.

In addition, several individual efforts havehelped put Misericordia on the national map:

Ashlee Ward, Track & Field: NCAA Division IIIIndoor & Outdoor champion in the high jump.

Eric Sweeney, swimming: NCAA Division IIIchampion in the 200 butterfly.

Willie Chandler, basketball: Second leadingscorer in NCAA Division III history with 2,898 points.

Heather Dougherty, swimming: School’s firstNCAA All-American in the 100 breaststroke.

Sam Helmstetter, women’s soccer: First-teamAll-American

Michelle Myers, volleyball: Led NCAADivision III with 2.86 blocks per game.

Amy Bower, cross country: Earned All-America honors despite not runningcompetitively until college.

Frank Redmond, track & field: MU’s firsttrack & field All-American at 800 meters.

Kim Daniel, field hockey: Eighth all-time inNCAA Division III with 58 career assists.

Mike Murphy, baseball: Set Division III single-game record with eight hits.

Misericordia University is Division III

The Misericordia Universityfootball team ended itssecond season on a highnote – with the program’sfirst win.

John Ameen earned All-MAC status as an offensivelineman for the secondstraight season while JeffPuckett was recognized at quarterback.

The Cougars set a MACsingle-game record with587 yards rushing in theirseason opener and finished11th in the nation in rushingyards per game.

With more than 50lettermen returning andanother impressiverecruiting class, theprogram seems poised to

take the next step on theirjourney toward becoming acompetitive force in theMiddle Atlantic Conference.

The Cougars compete in the10-team MAC and play theirhome games on a lighted,synthetic grass surface atMangelsdorf Field.
