Did You Know?
St. Francis of Assisi
Catholic School
exists to form,
inform and
transform students
as members of
Christ’s Mystical
Body. Body.
Excessive speed and the morning sun are causing some near misses in our parking lot! We ask that driv-ers slow down and pay special at-tention to our crosswalks, especially on Bekemeyer Street, so all our Vikings arrive safely to school! Thank you for your help!
Studies show that children who do not read or engage in educational activities during the sum-
mer may lose up to 2 months of reading performance. Those losses accumulate during the ele-
mentary school years so that by the time a child enters middle school he/she may be 2 ½ years
behind! To help keep your child up on skills, or for remediation with ones not quite learned yet,
you are welcome to enroll your child in St. Francis’ Summer School Program. Our summer
school has now been combined with the Catholic schools on the west side of town and it is called
“Westside Catholic School Summer School.” Grades K-4 will attend at St. Francis, while grades 5
-8 will attend summer school at St. Elizabeth’s School. The focus on mathematics will be the
basic facts, operations, functions and problem-solving skills. Reading will reinforce phonics,
comprehension strategies, fluency and other elements of reading. If you have questions or need
more information, you may call Mrs. Bird at St. Francis or email at [email protected].
Please send all enrollment forms and payment to the school office.
In conjunction with school food service programs, Dole Packaged Foods, LLC, is sponsoring a
2015-2016 National School Fruitapalooza Poster Contest. The contest involves designing and creat-
ing an original poster that incorporates fruit and an original slogan that promotes fruit in a clever
and unique way. We were excited to have 84 completed entries returned following Spring Break!
Each entrant will receive a certificate and small prize for participating, as well as having their post-
er displayed in our school online Artsonia art gallery and hung in our cafeteria.
Each participating school judges the posters submitted from their school and selects 3 winners to
send on to the national competition from each of the following
grade levels K-2nd grade, 3-5th grade, 6-8th grade. Mrs. Denise
Smarsh, our school’s Foodservice Manager, had a tough job
judging the posters with the help of Mrs. Lisa Lang, our Art
Teacher. We’re excited to announce that the following 9 students
will have their entries submitted for judging in the national com-
petition: Isaiah S. KB, Sebastian W. KB, Christian L. KA,
Audrey J. 3A, Austin R. 5A, Mia B. 5B, Almarosa G. 8B, Tyler
G. 8C, and Heidi L. 7A. Congratulations and good luck!

VIKING
What is
happening in
6B? Besides
all the state
testing, stu-
dents are
keeping their
sights on
prayer, stewardship and stories. Prayer:
The patron saint of 6th grade is Blessed
Miguel Pro, a 20th century martyr for the
faith. Inspired by this martyr’s example
of faith, our class prays together in
“prayer circle” – a time every day before
lunch when students partner up to plan
prayer circle, and lead the prayer. Stew-
ardship: Students have a mission to clean
up the trash around the church and school
grounds at least once a month. We can
never do it all, so we are happy to see that
other classes are picking up trash, too.
Stories: Though Mrs. Maliszewski likes
to tell a story or two, students also share
their stories throughout the day. We start
our week with “Tell me something good”,
where we tell each other our news after
busy weekends. Right now we are learn-
ing about Greek myths, and analyze the
stories to better understand the Ancient
Greeks, as well as our Catholic faith, by
comparing the two.
4th-6th grade music classes have been
packed with all sorts of fun in our new
classroom! Sharing the band room has
given students a new perspective on band
as well as giving us lots of room to move!
Recently, students have adventured on
their creative side as they combined both
rhythmic theory and good old fashioned
handshakes. The 4th and 5th grade classes
grabbed a partner to create two measures
of 4/4 time as well as a handshake to go
with it! Each group was allowed to use
any kind of clap,
dance move, or out-
ward sign that would
accurately reflect the
rhythm they created.
We saw all sorts of
actions from patty-
cake to the windmill.
These kids sure
know how to boo-
gie!
The 6th graders
reviewed their musical dynamics this
week. Students took turns pointing to a
certain dynamic on the wall and in re-
sponse, the class would speak either the
English or Italian word chosen. Not only
did they have to speak the word, they had
to say it in the dynamic (volume) the word
called for. Moving quickly amongst loud
and soft dynamics, these 6th graders can be
rather tricky!
Field day is Wednesday, May
25th, 3rd-5th Grade at 10:00-12:00pm
and K-2nd at 1:00-3:00pm A Sign-up Genius will be sent out at a
later date, for volunteer help. Save the
date to help out!
All children
should be
raised in
healthy and
nurturing
homes, free
from abuse
and neglect. The blue
pinwheels you see at St.
Francis of Assisi repre-
sents the need to priori-
tize child
abuse prevention right
from the start. We also
had a blue shirt and
jeans day to support
this and make all of us
aware, while praying for all those in
need. www.preventchildabuse.org

Hey! Go Vikings go! Thank you to the
2015-2016 Viking Cheerleaders, who
have had an outstanding year of cheer-
ing our teams to victory and boosting
school spirit here at SFA. The students
at St. Francis greatly appreciate the ded-
ication and enthusiasm they have shown
when it comes to planning pep rallies
and cheering on all of our athletes. We
would like to send a big thank you to
Miss Mally, Miss Smith, Miss Piccini,
Mrs. Carter and all of the parents who
have helped make this year a success.
We could not have done it without you!
Thank you, girls, for the enthusiasm,
spirit, and joy you bring to our school!

For students who were in grades K through 4th during the 2015-16 School Year
We will meet Mondays through Fridays
June 13 - July 1, 2016
To be held at: St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School

9:00 a.m.—11:30 a.m. Cost: $120
We are pleased to offer Summer School classes for students of Westside Catholic Schools to increase,
improve, and enhance skills in the areas of Religious Formation, English Language Arts and Mathematics. The focus of mathematics will be basic facts, operations, functions, and problem-solving skills. Reading will
reinforce phonics, comprehension strategies, fluency, and other reading elements.
In addition to teacher instruction, we will be utilizing Moby Max in the computer lab. This is a standards-
based reading/language arts and mathematics curriculum. Delivered online, the program uses adaptive
software to match the instructional needs of each student. The program’s difficulty level adjusts automatically
in response to the student’s answers, thereby providing a learning experience that is neither too easy nor too
difficult. We have successfully used Moby Max this school year and believe that it is extremely beneficial to
students. Another advantage to this program is that your child can use it all summer!
Our Summer School Store keeps students motivated and engaged. Come join the fun!

We are pleased to offer Summer School classes for students of Westside Catholic Schools to increase, improve, and en-
hance skills in the areas of Religious Formation, English Language Arts and Mathematics.
Religion: This class will be a review of grade level Wichita Diocesan Religion course content. It will be acceptable
remediation for students who did not achieve Meets Standard or above on the Diocesan Religion Assessment. A review
of the Religion Assessment results and consultation with Religion teachers will determine the content of the class. The
students will take the Diocesan Religion Assessment at the end of the course.
English Language Arts and Math: These classes will be developed based on the achievement results of the students
enrolled in the course. We will use NWEA MAP results and teacher consultation to reinforce skills and concepts con-
tained in the Kansas College and Career Readiness Standards. The main purpose of this course is the reinforcement
and improvement of grade level skills; however, either class may also serve as an option for students required to par-
ticipate in remediation in order to move to the next grade level. Summer school activities may differ for students based
on individual needs.
