There are often so many events and activities on our calendar that it is hard to keep up! The last few weeks have been no exception. The rugby league girls scored a win in Rockhampton, our debating teams are doing well, and the cheer squad came away with a number of awards – and that’s just to mention a few! What a huge effort from our school community for Mayfair! The delay seemed to pay off and the weather was beautiful, enabling the Fair to run like clockwork for another year. There are far too many people to mention who assisted, which is such a testament to our school community members and their hard work and dedication. Thanks everyone! Last week I had the privilege of spending a day in Brisbane at the DETi (Department of Education and Training International) annual conference with our hard working International Students Coordinator, Sue Ilich and Homestay Coordinator, Antonia Wise. Sue, Antonia and our Homestay parents work together to ensure that our international students have the very best Australian schooling experience. Our program has grown over the years and we now have twenty students at any one time enrolled in our school. Not only does the program allow our own students to interact with overseas students, but the program also generates funds that go straight back into our community.

On Friday our school community raised funds for cancer through Pink Day and Shave for a Cure. Well done to fourteen of our brave students who had their heads shaved in an effort to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation. The North High team was out in force again this year at the Mackay Marina Run with seven teams of staff and students up early to run 5km. Our top team placed 5th overall in the Corporate Challenge, which

was a fantastic effort! Thanks to all our students and staff who participated, and a special thank you to our dedicated staff who managed to run half a marathon and back up for the 5km. Amazing effort! In staff news, Mr Matt Vickery will be taking on the role of Junior Secondary HOD, while Ms Hannah Grimwood will be our Year 9 Coordinator for the next few weeks of term. Congratulations also to Ms Lisa Veney who has been offered a permanent deputy principal position at Mackay SHS. Lisa has been a valuable and highly regarded member of the North High staff since her arrival as DP at the end of 2014. We will be sad to see Lisa go, but we wish her all the best.

From the Deputy Principal

Dear North High Families,

I have been lucky enough to be awarded a permanent deputy principal position at Mackay State High School,

starting next term (only two weeks left!). While this is a great opportunity, I am very sad to say goodbye to North

High. I have been here almost three years as an acting deputy principal, so I know a lot of the students in this

school as they have travelled through the junior secondary precinct. There are so many incredible things about

North High that make coming to work so rewarding; the amazing facilities like the terraces, oval, pool and JSP

deck, the P&C, the Mayfair, Catering for Futures café, the new big under cover areas, the ongoing quest to

“muralise” the school, Saxby square, the yummy tuckshop, our year level parades, our “colour” days and events,

watching the Marching Band march on the street, the wonderful office and support staff, all of the incredible year

coordinators, heads of department and teaching staff. Thank you for having me at North High over the past few

years, and good luck to all the students and their families for the future. A special thank you to Mrs Grieger, Mr

Condren, Mr Harrison, Mrs Fatnowna and Mrs Foley who put up with me every day and are an incredibly

supportive team to work with. I hope to see you all around, please say hello!, and I can guarantee that whenever

I think of North High , that catchy North High song will jingle around my head. Have a happy and safe winter

break.

Marina Fun Run Many students and staff participated in the Marina Fun Run with the school on Sunday. We got off to a chilly start but it turned into a beautiful morning. The students were fantastic and it was wonderful to see the sea of blue North High shirts in the crowd. We are very proud of all who participated.

Our North High Team 1 came in 5th place, a wonderful effort. We had 7 teams overall in the corporate challenge.

North High Debating Update This term has seen the recommencement of the Mackay and District Secondary Schools Debating Competition.

North High is fielding teams in all 3 divisions and has had a very successful start to the debating season!

Both the year 7/8 team and year 9/10 team defeated their opponents (Holy Spirit College) in the first round,

arguing the affirmative case ‘That reality television does a good job of breaking down stereotypes’. Both teams

repeated this success in the second round by arguing the negative case ‘That parents have different hopes and

aspirations for their daughters than their sons’. The year 7/8 team defeated a second Holy Spirit College team

and the 9/10 team were victorious against Mercy College. In their third round, our Year 7/8 team was again

victorious against a Whitsunday Anglican team, however our Year 9/10 group were narrowly defeated by WAS 1.

The year 11/12 team have had two impromptu debates and have come away with two impressive wins. All our

teams are excited about their prospects as they move deeper into the draw.

Our teams are comprised of:

Year 7/8: Athalia Garcia, Emily Garner, Isabella Quagliata, Dakoda Murry, Sarah Savage and Brooke Naylor

Year 9/10: Carlton Rees, Jana Bassan, Grace Alexander, Kayleigh Missin, Shakiera Williams and Angel Edwards

Year 11/12: Dana Costigan, Meghan Malone, Jazlyn Bauer and Molly Bristow

We are very proud of these young people, as they continue the very proud tradition of debating excellence at

North High! We wish them luck in their final few debates of the year.

Recently Wesley Dyer, a student at North, was member of the Capricornia School Squash team that was successful in winning the Overall Champion Region and the U15 Boys age group at the recent Qld Championships. Wesley also won age champion and has been selected in the Qld school squash team that will meet NSW & NZ later in the year.

Well done, Wesley! Squash Champion

Brekky Central

At North High, Brekky Central now operates outside the hall every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning.

Chappy Luke, Teacher Aide Jayden Hodges and Nurse Rachel are assisted by willing student volunteers who do

everything from setting up tables to cooking scrambled eggs and cleaning up when it’s all done. (If you’re lucky

you’ll hear Jayden do his best rendition of The Wiggle’s Fruit Salad: Yummy,Yummy!)

Breakfast is FREE for all students in need thanks to the continued support from our P&C committee and weekly

food donations from Mackay Police-Citizens Youth Club. PCYC have jumped on board and are providing healthier

food options for our students – kindly donating eggs, seasonal fruit, bread, yoghurt and muesli.

The benefits of a breakfast program, for students who have not had breakfast at home, include:

Essential nutrition for energy, concentration and a better mood

Better health and learning outcomes

Socialisation with other students and Support Team

Increased participation and engagement at school

Learning great habits to carry through life

As busy parents, it can be tough to get kids fuelled up in time for school but it's important to try… don't forget how

important your good example is! Let your kids see you making time to enjoy breakfast every day. Even if you just

wash down some whole-wheat toast and a banana with a glass of milk or water, you're showing how important it is

to face the day only after refuelling your brain and body with a healthy morning meal.

If you would like to support our Breakfast Program, donations of non-perishable food items such as

spreads or cereal would be greatly appreciated. Kids can drop off food items to the office or directly to

me.

MAY FAIR ART SHOW SUCCESS

This year the ART SHOW doubled its takings thanks to many wonderful artworks entered into the 2 Competitions and the lovely people who visited the exhibition on the night of the Fair. A BIG thank you goes out to the wonderful student curators who put all the work on display and made the fabulous medallions.

Pictured and Congratulated are the prize winners of the 2 Competitions; The Manga/ANIME ART section and Your Pet Portrait. Both sections had Junior and Senior Divisions. Prizes were donated by Bradly Short of Milton House Gallery and our art supply company, Oxlades. The next showcase of student artwork will be at the Mackay Show. The Year 12 and Art Staff's work can be seen upstairs in the 500 Pavilion at ' Art on Show'. Downstairs will be student entries in Fashion at the Show. Our students have entered designs into the Fashion Illustration Category. All other student artwork will be in the YOUTH ART on display in Pavilion 3, next to the Show Society Office (Milton St entry). Good Luck to all of our entrants.

A day in the Life of a Student at CQU

Recently interested Year 12 students from North High were invited

to attend “A Day in the Life of a Student” experience at Central

Queensland University at the Ooralea campus. After a general

introduction, students chose two areas of interest from

Engineering, Nursing, Music (Conservatorium), Sports and

Exercise Medicine Digital Media, Education and Health (including

Chiropractic and Medical Imaging).

CQU offers an opportunity for regional students to study locally.

CQU has community links the provide students to gain work

experience, work placement, internships and future jobs, and

access to many scholarships. Students are encouraged to apply

for these scholarships.

Studying with family close by can be a stabilising influence and

financially sound which can improve the chances of succeeding in

the student’s tertiary studies.
