Imaginations will soar as kids spend their days exploring the magic ofour 140-acre Butler Campus replete with wooded trails, ponds, creeks andour very own Project Adventure Ropes Course. Days will be filled withgeocaching, fort-building, science experiments, archaeological digs,games, crafts, nature exploration, creek-walking and much more! Eachweek will be packed full of fun and imaginative activities revolvingaround weekly themes which will foster curiosity and collaboration. Why can’t kids have it all? Adventures in the kitchen and on the trails?Campers will delight in their days spent with our Adventurous Chef inthis fun, get-your-hands-doughy camp where they can develop theirkitchen skills and engage with other kids who like to cook. After lunch,campers will hit the trails on their bikes and spend time on Laurel’sProject Adventure Ropes Course. Occasional visits to local farms andpopular Northeast Ohio restaurants will add more depth to the camp.Imagine a child with skills like menu planning, pastry baking, properutensil skills, kitchen hygiene and healthy eating habits. And that’s justthe tip of the iceberg! (Note: No iceberg will be used in this camp!)

SUMMER THYME CULINARY ADVENTURE CAMP

Tuition: $400/session

Campers will explore mountain biking, climbing, paddle boarding,sailing and backpacking. Daily experiences will introduce new andexciting adventures on our 140-acre Butler Campus and will be enhancedby customized trips focused on specific skills. This camp will enableyoung teens to challenge themselves individually and in group situations.Time will be spent on the 14 high- and low-rope elements offered onLaurel’s Project Adventure Ropes Course to help foster creative problemsolving, promote leadership and build self-confidence through improvedcommunication skills. Campers will need to come prepared with anadventurous spirit and a desire to have lots of fun! (Campers must bringtheir own bike and be proficient at cycling and swimming.)

This first-class soccer camp focuses on enhancing individual skills,building team tactics and teaching intricacies of the game. In additionto soccer skills, campers will spend time in our state-of-the-art 16,000-square-foot fitness center while working with Laurel’s certifiedStrength and Conditioning Specialist to learn about lifting techniques,agility, speed, ACL injury prevention and nutrition. Campers will finishthe program with a personalized workout plan for the summer.

Coaching Staff: Tibi Regele – Head Varsity Soccer Coach at Laurel School, Tibi played inthe Youth National Budapest Team and played professional soccer inHungary until 1994. Tibi has coached high school soccer in Clevelandsince 2005. In 2011, he led Laurel’s soccer team to the state finals.

Nicole Nanchoff – Assistant Coach at Laurel School, Nicole playedsoccer at Walsh Jesuit where she won one national championshipand two state championships. She then played Division I soccer atDuquesne University and played semi-professionally for the ClevelandInternationals W-League team. She was the Assistant Coach at ClevelandState University for one season and assistant coached the state runners-up Laurel soccer team.

The Nike high school program is designed for players 13-18 years ofage who are currently on their high school team and want to move upthe ladder or any player interested in trying out for their high schoolteam. Players will learn the latest tennis techniques, tactics andstrategies through on-court instruction, competitive drills and matchplay. Players will hit tons of balls and participate in friendly competitionwith their peers.

Campers will observe the world from all angles, using magnification tosee more detail, going outdoors to take in the entire landscape and sky,and through photos and web links see the earth from outer space. Theywill use painting, drawing, printmaking, clay and other media to expresswhat they see and learn. Field trip included.

Photography Fundamentals will introduce students to an array of digitalphotographic techniques used in the studio, on location and in post-production including Adobe® Lightroom® and Photoshop® fundamentals.Using digital SLR cameras, students will explore locations throughoutCleveland to learn about photo composition. Each student will learn howto print their own work to bring home at the end of the week.

INTRODUCTION TO FILM

This introductory class is perfect for students who have an interest intelling a story with their camera. Students will explore the craft offilmmaking as they discuss and learn the important aspects of thecamera and how to capture good imagery. Each day will include timefor shooting scenes followed by a review session where we will evaluateand then edit the footage with the goal of producing a short film by theend of the class. Students will leave with new technical skills and anawareness of the creative process in regards to both filmmaking andstorytelling. No prior experience necessary.

Stop motion animation is a fun way to encourage conceptual thinking instudents. Planning the animation challenges students to visually layout a scene frame-by-frame so the viewer understands the story orconcept as it unfolds. Writing also becomes more meaningful sinceevery animation starts with a script. With stop motion, figurines, crafts orany hands-on materials can be used to tell stories, recreate a historicalevent or explain a science concept such as the life cycle of an organismor transformation of a solid to liquid to gas.

Projects will includepainting tennis shoes, creating mosaics, producing duct tape creationsand making beads/jewelry. A field trip to Upcycle Parts Shop in Clevelandwill demonstrate how local businesses are using this philosophy to makeart using items that would normally be thrown away.

In this camp you will learnhow to work with wax as a creative medium that is as versatile as clayor metal. You will also explore how wax is made and how the verydifferent chemical and physical properties influence what it is bestused for! Chinese, French and Spanish are offered in an immersionsetting to give campers the foundation they need to enter a languageclass at their grade level.

While cooking tapas, crepes or egg rolls, our students spontaneously usetheir target language to request flavors, colors, and what they like anddon’t like. Summer campers have such a blast they often forget that theyare experiencing it in another language!
