comes from the narrative of the life of
Abraham. Remember the story of God
testing Abraham by commanding him to
sacrifice his son, Isaac. That couldn’t
have made sense to Abraham. Isn’t Isaac
the son through whom God was to bring
salvation? Wasn’t this one the descendant
that God said He would bring salvation
through? Yet do you remember Abra-
ham’s response? He said yes. He took
Isaac to the mountain and was in the proc-
ess of sacrificing him when the Lord pro-
vided.
Jesus said His very sustenance was
doing what His Father wanted. Pleasing
His Father, satisfying His Father’s pro-
gram and agenda was his first priority, so
much so that He could call it His “food.”
Are you committed to finding out what
His work for you to do is? And is that
your food? Your sustenance? And to do
so without presuming anything on God? If
God gives you an assignment that doesn’t
make sense to you will you still carry it
out? And call it your food?
The second passage is John 5:19.
And this one is mind boggling to me. It
says, Jesus gave them this answer: "I tell
you the truth, the Son can do nothing by
Himself; He can do only what He sees
His Father doing, because whatever the
Father does the Son also does.” Let the
reality of what this is saying sink in. Jesus
(Continued on page 3)
During the month of January part of
our Bible reading is the book of Genesis.
And in Genesis 5 Moses speaks of the Old
Testament character, Enoch, walking with
God (Gen. 5:24). This is truly an amazing
statement.
By this the text means how can we
walk more intimately with God, doing what-
ever is necessary to prioritize our relation-
ship with Him. That language indicates a
vital, vibrant relationship with God, a mo-
ment by moment communication with Him
and awareness of His presence and reality.
It is more than our normal “pat” answers
about praying more. It is prayer, but a dif-
ferent quality of prayer and communion to
our lives.
Two brief passages in the gospel of
John give us a significant glimpse into Jesus’
walk with God. The first one is John 4:34.
"My food," said Jesus, "is to do the will of
Him who sent Me and to finish His work.
For Jesus walking with God meant an undi-
vided commitment to doing His Father’s
will.
Now we can get into a lot about how
do we know what God’s will is and how we
can be sure we haven’t missed it. But be-
fore we get to that there is a foundational
heart issue that must be dealt with. That is,
are we committed to doing God’s will what-
ever that may be? If God were to show us
something that did not make sense to us
would we say yes to God?
Another lesson we get from Genesis

is the perfect Son of God. Jesus is
perfectly in tune with His Father.
Jesus is sinless, perfect in devotion
and obedience. And Jesus says that
He can do nothing by Himself. He
does only what He sees the Father
doing.
This amazing statement re-
veals two heart qualities of Jesus.
The first is dependence. Jesus, in
His humanity knew His absolute
dependence on His Father. Now I
know we acknowledge this intellectu-
ally. But if we are really going to
have a vibrant walk with God, we
need to live this out. If we are going
to be in tune with the Father we
need to realize that we can do noth-
ing by ourselves. The second qual-
ity this reveals about Jesus is imita-
tion. The text says He does only

what sees the Father doing. How
do you see what the Father is do-
ing? In His Word. There needs to
be a much greater tenacity in our at-
tention to God’s Word. For Jesus,
walking with God meant total de-
pendence upon and imitation of His
Father.
Do you want to be more in
tune with God? Practice learning to
walk with God as Jesus did, making it
your food to know and do the Fa-
ther’s will, and practice the spiritual
habits of dependence and imitation.

Please continue to save your seemingly insignificant aluminum tabs. Every one of those tabs goes to help fami-lies who have children in extended hospital stay to be near their sick children by providing housing and meals in a McDonald House. Thank you church family for your help! In Christ, Mary Please note: Aluminum tabs appear shiny silver even if painted on one side. Some tabs on canned goods are made of another alloy that is not pure aluminum; these cannot be used.

In 2014, I was assigned a new Prayer Pal - Aurora Budd. Aurora is a sweet, inquisitive,
active two year old who is surrounded by loving parents and extended family. Because
Aurora and her mom and dad live in Jacksonville, we don’t get to see them often.
It is my privilege to pray for this precious little girl that as she grows physically - that
God would grow her spiritually, that she will learn to love the Lord with all her heart,
soul and mind. I ask that God protect her from the dangers in this world and that He
surround her with His loving care.
As I pray for Aurora I also pray for her parents, Tory & Sarah. My hope is to be an
encouragement for this family and to get to know them better. I am pleased and
blessed to have Aurora as my Prayer Pal.

The purpose of Prayer Pals is to pray for the children of our church family. Children birth through
18 years old are assigned a Prayer Pal. The main responsibility of the Prayer Pal is to pray for the child, however
in many instances, relationships form and this person can become a great friend and/or mentor. Each month,
we will be highlighting a new set of Prayer Pals. The church typically has at least one organized Prayer Pal gath-
ering per year. It is a wonderful time to meet face to face with your prayer pal and catch up.
If you are not already assigned a Prayer Pal and think you would enjoy this ministry, please email Sherry Wil-
liams at [email protected].

February 2015
Put Love Into Action
“Love” is a theme seen throughout the month of February, but it doesn’t mean much unless we put it into action. As Christians, we have the perfect example of love in action: God sending his only Son, Jesus, to die for our sins and rise again to give us new life.
God, who is love (1 John 4:8), calls his followers to love one another as he has loved us (John 15:12). That includes people of different skin col-ors, cultural backgrounds, physical abilities, and even religious beliefs. Kids notice differences and may be unsure how to treat people.
But no matter a person’s appear-ance or situation, Jesus loves and values him or her, and he calls us to do the same.
As parents, you play an important role in teaching your children how to love others in both word and action. Here are some helpful tips to follow. • Acknowledge the differences that kids notice in people, and allow them to explore those differences.
• Encourage children to look for posi-tive qualities in others. Focus on what makes each person special and unique. Kids who feel secure in themselves are more likely to em-brace other people with love.
• Be a role model of love and accep-tance. If you want your kids to ex-press love, you need that same ap-proach yourself. As your role model, remember Jesus, who befriended outsiders and outcasts.
POWERSOURCE ASK GOD:
1. To help your children realize the
depth of God’s love for them.
2. To give your kids a loving spirit
toward all people, including
those who are different from
them.
3. To guide you to live out your
love daily.

TEACHABLE MOMENTS
God’s Heartbeat With masking tape, create a heart out-line on the floor. Say: Let’s read what the Bible says about love. Read aloud 1 John 4:8. Ask: What do you think it means that God is love? When you think of his love, what words come to mind? Have family members stand on the heart outline and hold hands. Say: I’ll squeeze the hand of the person to my right. When you feel a squeeze, pass it on to the next person. Continue until there’s a good rhythm of squeezes. Say: Think of this as God’s heartbeat. When we receive his love, we can give it away and keep that love going and going! Ask: What are some loving things people have done for you? What are
some ways you pass along God’s love to other people? Close in prayer.
Love One Another
Exchanging cards and treats on Valentine’s Day is a small reminder that love is meant to be given away. Use that tradition as a springboard to discuss how much God loves each of us—and how we, in turn, get to share that love with other people. Remind your children that God’s love isn’t performance-based. In other words, he doesn’t love us more or less depending on what we do or don’t do. Instead, our loving actions are merely a grateful response for the love that God gives us so abundantly. Try a few of the fun activities below to reinforce the importance of loving others—inside and outside your family.
Living Valentines—Give each fam-ily member a heart-shaped candy, and share the messages written on them. Read 1 John 3:18, and dis-cuss what it says about showing love. Put that love into practice by exchanging candies with another family member, giving them a hug, and saying, “Jesus loves you—and so do I!”
Woven With Love—If you have a chain-link fence (or can obtain per-mission to decorate one at or near your church), create a symbol of God’s love. Weave red and white crepe-paper streamers in and out of the fence to make a design, such as a white heart with a red cross in the center. Pray together, asking God to use the image to remind your neighbors of his great love for them.
Secret Valentines—Have family members choose names so each person has a Secret Valentine. Dur-ing February, surprise one another with encouraging notes, treats, and help with chores. At the end of the month, reveal the names of Secret Valentines and express appreciation for all the love that was shown.
A Cool Valentine—If there’s snow on the ground near Valentine’s Day, go on a chilly mission to send lovely greetings to special people.
“Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God…If we love each other, God lives in us, and
his love is brought to full expression in us.” —1 John 4:7,12
Fill a squirt bottle with water and some red food coloring. (Or buy snow markers, available at Target.) Locate a large area of fresh, un-tracked snow in your valentine’s yard. Stomp the outline of a large heart, beginning at the bottom point, keeping your footprints close together. Then squirt the snow in-side the heart with colored water. Leave a valentine card (and some cookies!) on the porch. Polar Molar—Ahead of time, freeze some bubble gum. Read Matthew 24:12, and give each fam-ily member a frozen piece of gum. Have them race to soften it and try to blow a bubble. Then talk about how that cold gum is like a cold heart—and how you can “soften” your heart. Also discuss how you can show God’s warm love to peo-ple with cold hearts who might be sad, lonely, or scared. Name Game—Come up with ways to show God’s love to other people based on the first letter of your first names. For example, Tristen can “tell” people Jesus loves them. Hannah can “help” someone carry groceries. Read John 13:35. Say that other people know us by our names, but Jesus knows us by how we love one another.

Happy Happenings: Save the Date
Our annual Easter Eggstravaganza is planned for Saturday, March 28 at 10 AM. This will be a fun, family time filled with puppets, singing, pictures with the Easter bunny, and of course an egg hunt. Take the time to invite friends, family, and neighbors to join us as we celebrate and remember our Savior. Like last year, our Children’s Team will be partnering up with community groups to make this event a memorable one for the whole family. Com-munity group leaders will receive more in-formation this month of how they can help. You won’t want to miss out!
