Located on the South Plains in West Texas, Texas Tech University rests as a beacon of academic excellence. The prestine campus sprawls out over 1,800 acres boasting one of the top research institutes in the country. Texas Tech operates as a major comprehensive research institute, while also serving as a smaller liberal arts university. With its size, Tech has the ability to provide some of the best facilities in the nation, both academically and athletically. Yet with an enrollment of just over 30,000, the school still focuses on the individual student.

Texas Tech is home to students from all 50 states and more than 90 foreign countries. Students come to the campus with the opportunity to pursue over 150 undergraduate programs from within 11 separate colleges. Texas Tech is also home to 100 masters programs, 50 doctoral programs, a school of law and the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center. Texas Tech is the only campus in the state of Texas that is home to a major university, law school and medical school.

In early 2013, the university announced it reached its goal of raising over $1 billion through the ambitious Vision and Tradition campaign to raise funds for faculty endowments, campus expansions and over $145 million for student scholarships. Perhaps most impressively, and a reflection of the commitment from alumni and supporters of Tech, the benchmark of $1 billlion was reached nearly a full year ahead of schedule.

The City of Lubbock boasts a lively arts and music scene, featuring the Depot District which comes alive nightly with local bands and restaurants to create a truly unique entertainment hotspot just a few miles from the Texas Tech campus. Meanwhile, the United Spirit Arena, a 15,000-seat state-of-the-art multi-purpose arena nicknamed the The Entertainment Showcase of West Texas, regularly attracts the biggest artists in music including Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, George Strait while also having hosted Bon Jovi, Pearl Jam, Elton John and more.

Lubbock offers the convenience and luxury of a metropolitan city, while never losing touch with its small-town culture. The city has a comfortable population of just over 225,000 and offers students of Texas Tech and local residents one of the most attractive lifestyles in the state of Texas.

Graduates from Texas Tech have governed three states, flown space missions and even won Olympic Gold Medals. With such a wealth of opportunities at Texas Tech, its easy to see why from here, its possible.

TEXAS TECH TRADITIONSARBOR DAYWhen Texas Tech first started, most of the funds went towards the buildings, but the campus was lacking its landscape. Then, in 1937, president Knapp decided to dedicate one day every spring to beautify the campus. On the first day of this now annual tradition, 20,000 trees were planted. This Tech tradition still goes on today as student and teachers plant trees and beautify the campus on Arbor Day.

BANGIN BERTHA (SADDLE TRAMP BELL)Saddle Tramps carry Bangin Bertha, a bell on a trailer, to all home football games and homecoming events. Bertha was designed in 1959 by Saddle Tramp Joe Winegar, and was donated by the Santa Fe Railroad. Bangin Bertha is considered a spirit-raiser and a big tradition at Texas Tech.

BLARNEY STONEOn St. Patricks Day in 1939 Texas Tech University unveiled that they had discovered a piece of the Blarney Stone. According to the legend the stone was discovered by a group of petroleum engineers while they were on a field trip. After doing tests it was discovered that the stone was a piece of the original Blarney Stone. The stone now lies on a stand in front of the old Electrical Engineering Building. It is said that seniors that kiss the Blarney Stone upon graduation will receive the gift of eloquent speech.

CAROL OF LIGHTSTo celebrate the holiday season Texas Tech holds an annual event called the Carol of Lights. The event starts off with the Texas Tech University Combined Choirs performing selections of classic holiday songs at the Science Quadrangle. When the lighting ceremony commences, Students as well as those who came for the show stand in awe as over 25,000 red, white, and orange lights illuminate the 13 buildings surrounding memorial circle.

This tradition started in 1959 when Harold Hinn came up with the idea and provided the funds to cover the science quadrangle and the administration building with lights. Unfortunately students were away on Christmas break and did not see the display. The next year the Residence Hall Association created the Christmas Sing, which is now known as the Carol of Lights. Today, the Carol of Lights is one of Texas Techs favorite traditions.

DOUBLE T BENCHLocated in the courtyard behind the Administration Building, this special bench was given by the seniors of the class of 1931. It was an announced tradition that no freshmen were allowed to sit on it.

DOUBLE T SADDLE MONUMENTBefore the football team goes out onto the field they touch the sculpture of a saddle. The saddle was dedicated by the Saddle Tramps to Double T, one of the many Masked Rider Horses that served proudly over the years.

DOUBLE TThere is no other symbol more recognized with Texas Tech than the Double T symbol. Though no one has yet stepped forward to claim credit for its design, historical evidence points to Texas Techs first football coach E.Y. Freeland, who put the Double T logo on sweaters for the football players.

FIGHT SONG (FIGHT! RAIDERS! FIGHT!)Fight, Raiders, Fight! Fight, Raiders, Fight!Fight for the school we love so dearly.Youll hit em high, youll hit em low.Youll push the ball across the goal,Tech, Fight! Fight!

Well praise your name, boost you to fame.Fight for the Scarlet and Black. You will hit em, you will wreck em.Hit em! Wreck em, Texas Tech! And the Victory Bells will ring out!----Written by Carroll McMath

GOIN BAND FROM RAIDERLANDThe Goin Band from Raiderland - is one of the largest spirit raisers on campus and among the finest bands in the country. The original band in 1925, numbering only 21 members, was dressed in matador uniforms. In recent years, the bands 400 members have returned to variations on that original look. The Goin Band performs at home and away football games, parades and at other special events. Following home games, devoted fans stick around to join the band in their traditional march out of Jones AT&T Stadium, through the engineering key, around the circle, by the Administration Building and ending at the band parking lot behind the Music Building. The band was the 1998 recipient of the prestigious Sudler Trophy as the nations top marching band.

GUNS UPThe Guns Up sign is the widely recognized greeting of one Red Raider to another. It is also the sign of victory displayed by the crowd at every athletic event. The sign is made by extending the index finger outward while extending the thumb upward and tucking in the middle, little and fourth fingers to form a gun.

The sign can be traced back to L. Glenn Dippel, a 1961 alumnus of Texas Tech. He and his wife Roxie were living in Austin and faced the daily presence of the Hook em Horns hand sign used by University of Texas fans. So, the Dippels decided to retaliate. They looked to mascot Raider Red and his raised guns for their inspiration and in 1971 developed the Guns Up hand symbol. The Saddle Tramps and Texas Tech cheerleaders immediately adopted Guns Up and a new tradition was born.

The Masked Rider became the official Texas Tech mascot in 1954 when the late Joe Kirk Fulton led the Red Raider football team onto the field at the Gator Bowl.

    TEXAS TECH TRADITIONS

  • 92014 TEXAS TECH RED RAIDER SOFTBALL

MASKED RIDERThe Masked Rider is the oldest and most popular mascot of Texas Tech University that still exists today. Originally the Masked Rider started as a dare in 1936 and was then called the ghost rider, because no one knew the riders identity. These ghost riders circled the field at home football games and then disappeared.

The Masked Rider did not become an official mascot until 1954, when Joe Kirk Fulton led the team out onto the field at the Gator Bowl. Fulton, wearing Levis, red shirt, a black cape and mounted on a black horse awed the crowd as the team made one of the most sensational entrances ever.

Today the Masked Rider, with his or her guns up, leads the team out onto the field for all of the home games. The Masked Rider is one of the most visible figures at Tech.

MATADOR SONG (ALMA MATER)Fight, Matadors, for Tech!Songs of love well sing to thee,Bear our banners far and wide.Ever to be our pride,Fearless champions ever be.Stand on heights of victory.Strive for honor evermore.Long live the Matadors!----Music by Harry Lemaire, words by R.C. Marshall

RAIDER REDPrior to the 1971 season, the Southwest Conference passed a rule that prevented members of the conference from taking live animals to non-home games unless the host team had no objections. So Jim Gaspard, a member of the Saddle Tramps, created Raider Red from a drawing by the late Lubbock cartoonist Dirk West as an alternative to the Masked Rider. Raider Reds student persona is kept a secret from the Tech community. Red is a public relations mascot who shakes hands with the crowds at athletic events and poses for pictures. He changes from boots to high-top court shoes for basketball games. Raider Red fires his two 12-gauge shotguns using powder-filled shells after every Tech touchdown and field goal.

SADDLE TRAMPSFormed by Tech student Arch Lamb in 1936, this all-male booster organization supports mens athletics at Texas Tech. The name Saddle Tramp came from the stories of traveling men who would come to a farm for a brief time, fix up some things and move on. Lamb said he decided that he could fix up some things himself before moving on, and the Saddle Tramps were born. Since that time the Saddle Tramps believe if something was for the betterment of Texas Tech then they would work at it.

These Midnight Raiders paint the campus red with crepe paper before big home games, form the legendary Bell Circle moments before kickoff, ring Bangin Bertha, participate in parades and other campus events (including the Carol of Lights), and ring the Victory Bells after Red Raider victories.

TEXAS TECH SEALDesigned by the campus master planner, William Ward Watkin, in 1924, the Tech Seals symbols are the lamp, which represents school, the key for home, the book for church, and the star for state. Cotton bolls represent the areas strong cotton industry and the eagle is suggestive of our country. The seal first appeared on Tech diplomas in 1948, but it wasnt officially approved as The Seal of Texas Tech University until 1953. On April 27, 1972, the seal was placed at the Broadway and University entrance to the campus in what became known as the Amon G. Carter Plaza. It is made of red granite and stands 12 feet high. It has been referred to by students through the years as the Oreo.

VICTORY BELLSIn 1936 victory bells were given to Texas Tech as a class gift. The bells rang for the first time at the 1936 classs graduation. It is said that after the win over TCU, the following year, the bells rang through out the night. The bells kept Lubbock residents up all night. Thereafter, the bell ringing was limited to 30 minutes. Saddle Tramps ring the bells after Texas Tech victories and during special occasions. The Victory Bells - one large and one small, which combine to weigh 1,200 pounds - hang in the east tower of the Administration Building.

WILL ROGERS AND SOAPSUDSOne of the most well known landmarks on campus is the statue of Will Rogers and his horse Soapsuds. This memorial was dedicated on February 16, 1950 by longtime friend of Rogers, Amon G. Carter. Carter believed Texas Tech was the perfect setting for the statue and that it would fit into the traditions and scenery of West Texas.

The statue stands at 911 tall and weighs 3,200 pounds; its estimated cost was $25,000. On the base of the statue, the inscription reads Lovable Old Will Rogers on his favorite horse, Soapsuds, riding into the Western sunset.

Today Texas Tech tradition and legends surrounds the statue. According to one legend, the plan to face Will Rogers so that he could be riding off into the sunset did not work out as it would cause Soapsuds rear to be facing downtown. To solve this problem, the horse and Will was turned 23 degrees to the east so the horses posterior was facing in the direction of Texas A&M, one of the schools rivals.

Before every home football game the Saddle Tramps wrap Old Will with red crepe paper. Will Rogers and Soapsuds have also been wrapped up in black crepe paper to mourn national tragedies.

    TEXAS TECH TRADITIONS

The Will Rogers statue is located at the main campus entrance and is wrapped in red crepe paper prior to every Red Raider home football game.

ROCKY JOHNSON FIELD - HOME OF THE RED RAIDERS

Texas Tech boasted two of its largest crowds in school history during the 2013 season as 1,025 fans were on hand to watch the Red Raiders battle in-state rival on April 28, 2013. The crowd marked the second-largest to ever attend a game at The Rock and followed 923 fans from the day before.

Rocky Johnson Field, the home of the Red Raider softball team since the 2001 season, is now one of the finest softball venues in the Big 12, after several renovations have been completed in the decade that followed.

The original field was constructed at a cost of $2.5 million and would have not been possible without the kind support of James L. Rocky Johnson, who was a distinguished alumnus of the Rawls College of Business at Texas Tech and was CEO of GTE for many years. He also served on the Texas Tech Board of Regents. The Barbara Peevy Press Box was added prior to the 2001 season and remains one of the best media facilities for the sport in the conference. With two televi-sion/radio booths and seating for a dozen media members, the building has the potential to expand to accommodate more because of the ample space behind primary seating areas.

The Red Raiders played their first-ever game at Rocky Johnson Stadium on March 29, 2001, when Tech topped in-state rival and 20th-ranked Texas A&M, 1-0, in the opening game of an afternoon doubleheader. Tech has gone on to defeat seven more ranked teams since then en route to a 126-101 record all-time at the complex.

Major renovations to the field and dugout areas were realized in time for the 2009 season and then, in time for the 2010 season, construction concluded on a state-of-the-art indoor facility. The softball complex located just outside the left field fence includes coaching offices, a meeting room, a players lounge, equip-ment rooms and locker rooms. In addition, the Red Raider softball team now has the luxury of also practicing in their new indoor and outdoor batting cages, thanks to these renovations.

The inclusion of a state-of-the-art team facility which also includes complete athletic training and equipment storage areas along with a luxurious team room can play host to pre-event functions and will serve as an overflow media center during tournaments. In the summer of 2010, Rocky Johnson Field played host to a weeklong pro-fessional series of softball, featuring the Orlando and Chicago franchises who boasted a number of USA national players on their rosters, which culminated in a Saturday evening game of the week on the ESPN family of networks. The more

than 2,600 fans in attendance represented the largest crowd to ever attend a softball game on campus.

Prior to the 2012 season, Texas Tech added just over 500 seats to the complex, pushing the facilitys official capacity to just under 1,100, one of the largest in the conference. The project, which replaced the grass berms over the first and third base dugouts, allowed for seating to be available all the way down the baselines up until each teams bullpen.

The renovation marks the second for Tech since the facility officially opened in 2001. After three trips to the postseason in the last four years, Tech is now more prepared to be a NCAA Regional site with its increased capacity. The facility has the ability to add portable seating as needed as well.

The extra seats were needed in 2013 as two of the largest crowds in program his-tory saw the Red Raiders battle in-state rival Texas. After a large crowd on Friday night, 923 fans attended the Saturday contest against the Longhorns followeed by an announced crowd of 1,025 on Sunday for the series finale.

The final two games marked the second- and third-largest crowds to ever attend a game at Rocky Johnson Field. Over 2,300 fans attended the series overall, the largest three-day total in program history.

Tech plans to further improve the stadium in the future, beginning in January 2014 when fiberoptics are run to the facility which will allow the Red Raiders to appear more frequently on TV thanks to the athletics departments third-tier rights agreement with FOX Sports.

  • 162014 TEXAS TECH RED RAIDER SOFTBALL

When Texas Tech head coach Shanon Hays looked across the diamond during the first preseason practice of 2014, he noticed a few familiar faces missing.

Gone were regulars such as Mikey Kenney, Sandy James and Adriana Perez. In their place stood several new faces, mainly freshmen.

For Hays, though, it was a group that will determine much of Techs future, beginning right away when the 2014 season opens Feb. 6 at the Lion Classic hosted by Southeastern Louisiana.

Weve been looking forward to this freshman class getting to campus for a while now, said Hays, who is already the winningest coach in program history in just his fifth season. We graduated several great players who made up quite a bit of our offense but we believe this group can pick up right where they left off.

The Red Raiders have recorded at least 30 wins every season under Hays and narrowly missed out on their fourth-straight NCAA Regional appearance a year ago with a 30-26 record.

To return to the postseason, Tech will rely on a rather young roster that features 16 of 25 players classified as either of a freshman or sophomore. Of the nine upperclassmen, only six were with the Red Raiders in 2013 as Kristi Belshe, Lea Hopson and Kaylyn Archuleta all joined the programs from the junior college ranks.

NEW TEAM. NEW YEAR. NEW FOCUS: 2014 PREVIEWWhile still young, the bulk of Techs roster will still have several experienced returners to learn from in seniors Brittany Talley and Taylor Powell along with junior Cara Custer.

We have so much potential, said Taylor Powell, one of just three seniors on the roster. Everybody keeps harping on our youth, and thats true, but we have so potential to tap into. With that youth comes a lot of energy and a lot of excitement and going into the Big 12, were going to need that.

Powell, Talley and Custer are the only three Red Raiders who played in Techs last postseason appearance which came at the 2012 Seattle Regional.

Talley and Custer will be looked at not just for their experience, though, as they will be part of a Tech pitching staff that will have a pair of upperclassmen in the circle for the first time in Hays tenure.

This may be the most experienced pitching staff Ive ever had, Hays said. We have really relied on Cara and Brittany the past two seasons and then Gretchen (Aucoin) came on with a nice freshman season last year. We also feel good about Chandler (Moore) and our freshman Cassie McClure as well, so I think we are very fortunate to have some depth in the circle.

Talley went 9-5 in 2013 with a team-leading 2.77 earned-run average while Custer, coming off the best season ever for a Tech freshman pitcher, finished 14-16 with a 3.10 ERA after tossing nearly half of Techs total innings.

They were helped with the emergence of Aucoin, who started in nine games, including several during Big 12 Conference play. The right-hander ended the year 6-3 overall with a 3.35 ERA while hitting .317 at the plate with a home run and nine RBI.

Hays and pitching coach Aly Sartini plan to add both Moore and McClure in the mix after Moore recorded her best fall so far in her collegiate career while McClure comes in after being named the Texas 4A-5A Player of the Year last year out of Kingwood High School.

I really feel great about our pitching staff as a whole, said Talley, who enters her senior season already among the Tech career leaders in both wins and ERA. We know we play a big part in our success, and I think thats something we all enjoy. We want the ball when the game is on the line.

In the field, Tech will be forced to replace its entire outfield along with James at first base. Freshman Brittany Lee and sophomore transfer Kady Crow are expected to help fill the void behind the plate as well.

Sophomore infielder Samantha Camello is one of three returning position starters for the Red Raiders, joining Powell and Sydnie Tapia. Despite a young roster, Hays says this could be his most talented and deepest club in his tenure.

Hays brought in 2013 NJCAA All-Americans Lea Hopson and Kristi Belshe to boost the front part of Techs lineup that will also likely include the likes of Aucoin and McClure along with fellow freshmen Kierra Miles, Sydni Emanuel and Brittany Warnecke.

I think we will still have the same type of power and offense that weve had in years past, Hays said. We recruited these kids for what they could do at the plate and we feel they will come in and make us a better team immediately. There will be some growing

pains but I like where this group is heading into the season.

    Tech will need to play to its potential to navigate t h r o u g h a n o t h e r c h a l l e n g i n g B i g 1 2 schedule that includes

road trips to defending national champion Oklahoma and fellow Womens College World Series participant Texas.

The Red Raiders, who were picked sixth in the conference preseason poll, are no stranger to high expectations

But even with a mainly a new team, the expectations remain the same for Hays.

We expect to compete and be in contention for a Big 12 title, Hays said. Thats our goal each and every year and this year will be no different. I expect big things from this group and so do they.

THREE TO WATCHBRITTANY TALLEYOne of three seniors on the 2014 roster, Tech will once again rely on Talleys left arm as the Little Elm, Texas native is one of four Red Raiders returning to the circle this season, joining fellow mainstays Cara Custer and Gretchen Aucoin. Talley, who is already among the Texas Tech career leaders in both wins and ERA, finished 9-5 in 2013 with a team-leading 2.77 ERA. Besides her efforts in the season, Tech will rely on Talleys senior leadership with a young roster composed mainly of freshmen and sophomores.

We expect to compete and be in contention for a Big 12 title. Thats our goal each and every year and this year will be no different. I expect big things from this group and so do they.- Shanon Hays

SAMANTHA CAMELLOCamello recorded one of the top freshman seasons in school history in 2013 as the Temecula, Calif. na-tive hit .311 with 19 RBI while scoring an impressive 34 times. The performance marked just the sixth time a Red Raider starting freshman had hit .300 or better during her rookie season. Camello, who split time between second and shortstop last season, heads into this spring penciled in as Techs everyday shortstop, a position where she started 22 times as a freshman.

BRITTANY LEEWhen Texas Tech signed Lee out of Keller High School, head coach Shanon Hays knew he had just secured the type of player who could start behind the plate all four years. Lee, one of a school record 11 freshmen on the Red Raider roster, will likely earn the opening day start for Tech behind the plate after a successful prep career where she was a two-time Triple Crown All-American and three-time first team all-district honoree. Besides catcher, Lee should also see time in the outfield and possibly first base.
