6.2 Data'modeling'within'the'ESPI'schema'#

6.2.1 Time'series'and'intervals'#

The#ESPI#model#provides#for#the#provision#of#a#series#of#Meter#Readings#with#a#number#of#

attributes#associated#with#each#reading,#such#as#time#and#quality.#This#creates#a#simple#time#

series#data#structure#as#per#Schema#2.##The#model#also#enables#the#expression#of#time#intervals#

with#similar#summary#attributes#to#provide#data#in#blocks#of#relevant#periods#of#time,#such#as#a#

billing#period#as#per#Schema#1.##It'is'recommended'that'data'be'expressed'at'the'individual'reading'level,'where'the'standard'allows'it'to'be,'to'enable'a'consistent'and'simple'time'series'data'structure'that'can'accommodate'additional'attributes'and'a'move'towards'real'time'data'in'the'future.'''#

6.2.2 Modeling'Time'of'Use'Rates'#

Ontario#currently#has#three#timeOofOuse#rates:#on#peak,#mid#peak#and#off#peak.#

At'this'initial'release'Time'of'Use'can'only'be'expressed'as'three'separate'Meter'Readings'and'associated'interval'block'and'interval'reading'objects.''With'the'evolution'of'the'standard'it'is'expected'LDCs'will'move'to'express'Time'of'Use'at'the'individual'reading'level'for'a'simpler'contiguous'data'structure.'For'that'reason'“tou”'fields'are'optional'at'this'time,'a'consideration'for'making'it'mandatory'may'be'made'when'the'ESPI'standard'is'updated.''The#current#ESPI#standard#provides#for#the#capture#of#Time#of#Use#rates#at#the#interval#block#

level,#rather#than#the#individual#interval#level.#Figure#1#shows#the#expression#of#Time#of#Use#by#

using#intervals#blocks,#this#creates#three#separate#blocks#rather#than#a#continuous#time#series.#In#

this#schema#the#interval#block#start#time#is#the#same#as#the#start#time#of#the#first#interval#in#the#

rate#band#will#be#created.##

rather#than#stated#separately#somewhere#as#a#set#of#Ontario#rules,#so#that#it#drives#the#

application#behavior#directly,#otherwise#the#developer#has#to#know#the#file#comes#from#Ontario#

and#code#specific#behaviors#into#the#application.#In#time#the#ESPI#standard#may#support#TOU#to#

be#associated#to#an#individual#reading,#so#it#is#not#considered#beneficial#to#adjust#the#standard#

now#here#in#Ontario.###

Many#existing#electricity#consumption#data#downloads#provided#by#LDCs#include#the#provision#of#

of#consumption#patterns.#Temperature#will#be#expressed#as#a#separate#MeterReading!object!with!unique!ReadingType!attributes#as#it#represents#a#different#type#of#reading#or#measurement.#

Going'forward'it'is'recommend'future'implementations'should'not'supply'weather'data'as'there'is'an'ongoing'evolution'of'the'standard'to'better'handle'the'expression'of'associated'weather'data'collected'by'a'third'party'at'a'different'location.''

6.3 Data'selection'and'mapping'to'the'ESPI'schema''#

This#section#provides#an#overview#on#how#data#is#selected#and#mapped#to#the#schema#to#enable#

a#consistent#set#of#business#assumptions#and#interpretation#of#the#data#across#sources.##

#

6.3.1 Data'precision'#

The#precision#with#which#Meter#Read#data#provided#by#a#particular#LDC’s#Advanced#Metering#

Infrastructures#(AMI)#will#not#be#fixed#but#will#be#at#the#level#of#precision#that#is#available#

through#that#LDC’s#Advanced#Metering#Infrastructures#(AMI).#This#will#allow#for#future#evolution#

of#systems#and#to#other#customer#types#such#as#industrial#customers#where#different#levels#of#

precision#are#required.##

6.3.2 Time'values''#

Ontario#covers#two#time#zones,#although#the#data#in#the#MDM/R#is#stored#and#made#available#as#

EST.#The'time'data'types'in'the'standards'are'used'based'on'a'UTC'+'offset'and'their'inclusion'is'mandatory'using'the'LocalTimeParameters'element.''(Note'LocalTime'Parameters'is'not'in'the'published'standard'but'is'in'the'ESPI'derived'schema'available'in'the'OpenESPI'project'and'will'be'incorporated'into'the'standard)'#

6.3.3 Quality'indicators'#

Quality'indicators'are'optional'for'those'LDCs'that'wish'to'provide'the'flags'based'on'those'available'to'them'and'the'customer'group'being'served.''#
