rceWhat is GREEN BUTTON?

27 October 2014

Common-sense idea that electricity customers should be able to download and transmit their own energy usage information in a standard consumer- and computer-friendly format

Green Button is a standard that enables consumers to access and share their electricity consumption data in a consistent, digital and secure manner

Markets

• Covers residential, commercial and industrial consumers

Timeliness

• Instant access of consumption data of previous hour/day/ week/month/year…

Time interval

• includes any interval of data (monthly, daily, hourly, 15 minute)

Two ways to implement Green Button

27 October 2014 Green Button: VSK Murthy Balijepalli

This powerful model allows a consumer to authorize a third-party service provider to receive direct access to their Green Button Data - no need to repeatedly login to their

utility and download files. These authorizations are valid for an agreed upon time and can be revoked at anytime by the

consumer

A customer visits their utility web portal, they can simply login and

download their Green Button Data as an XML-formatted file

Green Button in USA and other countries

United States in 2011

•renewed call for investments in clean energy

•proposed new incentives to spur energy innovation and eliminate energy waste

•called on Congress to set a clean energy standard that creates a market for innovation

27 October 2014

DOE partnered with utilities and conceptualized GREEN BUTTON

•electricity customers able to securely download their own detailed Energy Usage Information (EUI) from their utility website

•voluntary adoption of an open industry smart grid standard (GREEN BUTTON FORMAT)

•standardized data format

52 utilities provided Green Button support

•enabled consumers to use their usage data to interact with a variety of third-party applications (apps)

•uses include verification of energy audits and retrofits, optimizing solar installations, home-automation controls designed to reduce consumption, etc.

Innovation

•spurred the private entrepreneurs and application developers, creating an industry of new products and services

•marked the beginning of a new era of consumer control over energy use, and local empowerment to cut waste and save money

GREEN BUTTON available to 100M (as of Dec. 2013) consumersRef: http://en.openei.org/wiki/Green_Button

Canada has adopted it in 2013Following countries are considering adoption:

•Australia•China•Japan•Korea•Indonesia

Technical champion in Green Button

Engaged in continued research on extending basic

Green Button to consumer applications

Constituted Green Button Panel (with members from

Industry, Utilities, and Academia) to derive Green Button

for India

Submitted a concept note and recommendations to MoP

for Green Button implementation in DISCOMs

BIS LITD-10 (Under the Chairmanship of Sh. NS Sodha) is

pursuing Green Button and started drafting the National Standards

Green Button Standards for India will be finalized in few months

Indian DISCOM with Green Button

27 October 2014

Consumer outreach, i.e. Engage and Empower

them by providing energy usage data, no regulatory obligations – Let’s share!!!

Efficient energy utility operations through

reduction in procurement costs, solar siting, etc

Supports cost effective deployment

Encouragement of innovative consumer

oriented servicesbenefiting both consumers

and utilities

Building for one DISCOM vs building for many DISCOMs

• Standard data formats

• More innovation on consumer data

• Common applications across all DISCOMs

• Easy accessibility of the data from DISCOMs

• Encouraging entrepreneurs to develop applications

Conclusion

27 October 2014

Immediate step

• DISCOMs should understand and implement the basic Green Button format for standardizing the energy usage information

Future

• Utilities/DISCOMs should coordinate each other to standardize the consumer interfaces as per the BIS Standards
