Many people, especially in the third world, are unaware of the functions of the kidney, neither do they know when it malfunctions.

The kidneys are essential to man’s well being and its failure may result in death. To mark the 2013 world kidney Day,

an awareness walk was organized from Four-Points by Sheraton, Oniru to The Palms at Lekki.

About 100 persons came for the walk and everyone wore the branded World Kidney Day Tee-Shirts supplied by

one of the sponsors – Pfi zer. Music was supplied by a live band to attract the public. Educative fl yers explaining the

functions of the kidney and how to prevent kidney diseases were distributed along the way. The police and Lastma

Offi cials were at hand to maintain peace and order along the walk route. Critical Rescue Ambulance followed

closely behind to attend to any health emergency.

Light refreshments and drinks were served at the end of the walk at The Palms. The event was adequately covered

by the The Sun News paper and the NTA. Sponsors and supporters include – Pfi zer, Adam &Eve, Visions Opticals,

Flour Mills of Nig Ltd.

The awareness walk was a great success and a larger scale is envisaged for

2014 world kidney Day.

Public LectureThursday, 14 March 2013

World Kidney Day is marked all over the world onthe second Thursday of March every year to draw ourattention to these vital organs in our body.

A public lecture took place at the Oceanview – Eko Hotel, Victoria Island on Thursday, 14th March, 2013. About 100 people were in attendance. A Professor of Nephrology – Dr Manoj Gumber of the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre, (IKDRC), Ahmedabad was invited from India to give the lecture on “Causes, Prevention and Management of Chronic Kidney Diseases/Kidney Failure.

The public lecture was chaired by Prof G. O. Sowemimo, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Kidney Foundation for Africa. Dr Sanusi Registrar of The Medical Council represented the council. People from various walks of life, medical and non-medical attended the lecture which was interactive. It was enlightening as many questions were asked and satisfactory answers given. During an interval the Managing Director of Adcem, Mr. Adewole, introduced a mobile Dialysis machine that works with solar energy, which can be used at home or in rural areas.

The lecture ended after three hours with light refreshments and drinks. Guests were given a takeaway bag with various items from Pfizer and Vision Opticals.

MedicalWorkshop12

The Medical Workshop started after the interval for refreshments. It was moderated by Dr. Funmi Ajose. Dr. Bolaji Obadeyi was the rapparteur. The topic for the workshop was “Clinical Management of Co-morbidities pre and post-transplantation/ stem cell transplantation”.

The medical personnel present were very much particular about how kidney Diseases can be detected early by General Practitioners. A communiqué was issued at the end of the session.

NTA LIVEINTERVIEWThere was a live NTA interview with Prof. Manoj Gumber at 7pm on the essence of the World Kidney Day. Several questions were answered to enlighten the public about the importance of the Kidneys, the Causes and Treatment of Kidney Diseases.

On the whole, the celebration of the World Kidney Day was successful as all its aims and objectives were achieved.
