As usual at this time of year I am counting down the sleeps before the 2013 QSuper Queensland Police & Emergency Services Games kick off in September. There is no doubt that this years event will be the best ever. We have a new website which should allow you to easily look at all the events on offer and a simple way to enter your sport. We have also really forged a close bond with the Firies after recently beating them in the Climb for Cancer, Emergency Services stair climb challenge. Expect to see a lot of fit fire men and women competing, they have even started their own cross fit event so hopefully we can also beat them at this.

QSuper Saturday will be back bigger and better than before with the jumping castle, rock climbing wall and even bungee jumping for the kids. My kids are already talking about the kids triathlon, maybe

they will even start training for it. Remember our philosophy is to create a really great family environment with as many events for both kids and adults running at the Academy on the one day, Saturday the 21st. Make sure you bring your picnic blanket and stay for the day.

Our Games Co-ordinators Joanna Stone and Rebecca Dale are doing a great job of putting together really high quality sporting events at unbelievable prices. Make sure you go to our new website and pick an event, enter up and start training. Can’t wait to see you at the Games. All the best.

2013 QSUPER QUEENSLAND POLICE & EMERGENCY SERVICES GAMES

The Queensland Police & Emergency Services Games are with us again and the Queensland Police Sporting Association is proud to announce that QSuper have come on board as the Games naming rights sponsor. Also supporting the Games are the Queensland Police Service, RemServ, World of Sport, Queensland Police Credit Union and the Queensland Police Union. On top of that Fisher & Paykel, Kincrome and Hummer Limos have generously donated goods to the Games to be used as prizes during some of our competitions. Thanks to all these wonderful businesses and agencies for your ongoing support and commitment to emergency services and law enforcement personnel.

On top of all that, I am also proud to have been appointed Games Manager in May 2013. This is my second stint for the Games, having managed it previously in 2005 with Sergeant Rebecca Dale and I am enjoying the opportunity to catch up with our sport coordinators and all the other people who support the Games behind the scenes that make it happen. Rebecca has also been working tirelessly on the Games since March this year.

With the majority of the 36 sports being contested between the 21st and 28th of September, what a fantastic Games these are shaping up to be. You don’t need to be a world beater to compete, we encourage everyone to get out and have a go in this very social environment, making new friends and

enjoying the camaraderie between emergency services and law enforcement agencies.Wondering if you are eligible to compete? The Games are open to all sworn officers and staff members of:• Police• Fire• Ambulance• Protective Services (Qld)• Federal Police (Qld)• Corrections and• Customs (Qld)

AND your immediate family members. So, get the kids interested and arrange some events for your whole family.

We have everything from the Adventure Race at Mission Beach and the North Queensland Touch Football competition to the Netball at Albion, Darts at Petrie, Futsal at the Inala PCYC, QSuper Saturday and many more.

Netball is always a bit hit for the games. Ladies and mixed teams from different agencies all over the state will migrate to the Brisbane Indoor Sports Centre on the 24th and 25th of September and don bibs for a hotly contested netball competition. In 2005 I even had a go at this myself. I’d like to say that I competed but I think my team members would agree that I was a complete liability and they had a lot of laughs at my expense.Surely everyone has a set of Darts tucked away in the cupboard. Well dust them off and start practicing. Held at the Kallangur Darts Association, Petrie. This is a licensed venue. These guys always have a blast. A 5-a-side competition with unlimited interchange, Futsal is bound to raise a sweat but get in quick as there are limited team numbers and this popular sport always books out early.

QSuper Saturday

Don’t miss QSuper Saturday. I hear you ask why? Because the 21st of September hosts ten sports all at the Oxley Police Academy. First off the blocks is the Aquathon (kids welcome to compete) and the Touch Football competition on the oval both commencing at 8am. This is closely followed by the Greatest Athlete on the obstacle course, and the first leg of the Kids Triathlon. This is certainly one of my favourite events of the games. Lots of different abilities compete in this one. It is heart warming to see the kids in the pool (many with parents in tow) wearing floaties (the kids not the parents) dog paddling the 25m with massive smiles on their faces. Then out to find their bikes (this can be a little tricky as many of the bikes look similar). I have seen a couple of little girls face off over the ownership of a pretty pink racer only for the outcome to be decided by a quick inspection and identification of some cleverly installed non-standard stickers establishing ownership. Phew! The run around the Academy oval for the final leg, sorts them all out (my young fella even abandoned his much loved gum boots half way through the run one year so he could sprint the final 200m). You would think all this activity would wear them out, but no. They often head straight from the Triathlon to the free jumping castle and climbing wall whilst slurping on a free snow cone or they head over to watch Mum/Dad race compete in the Oztag that starts on the oval at 9am.

From there the inaugural Crossfit competition starts at 9.30am, so don’t miss the chance to push yourself to the limit. With Crossfit fever spreading across Australia this is expected to be a hotly contested sport not to mention, a fantastic spectator event. The Martial Arts and

Indoor Rowing competitions both start at 10am and the Powerlifting at 10.30am. All three of these sports are held in and around the gymnasium. Having recovered sufficiently from the Aquathon and Kids Triathlon many of our participants then head back to the pool for the Swimming competition starting at 11am.

QSuper Saturday really is a family fun day so don’t come on your own, bring everyone out and make a day of it. Definitely a day not to be missed.

This is just a taste of what the Games have on offer. For a list of all the sports, visit the Games website at www.qldpolicesport.com (from the QPS computers you may need to ‘refresh’ a couple of times) or make yourself a drink and settle in to read this Games magazine which contains everything you need to know. Register online now for one low entry fee of $25 per adult and $10 per child (additional sport fee for Golf and Adventure Race).

In 2007, a demonstration event was offered for weapons and/or miscellaneous events such as Choreographed self defence or discipline specific demonstration or individual weapon use, such as non-chukkas or bo-staff. This will again be offered and opens up an opportunity to display unique or discipline specific demonstrations and not just limited to weapons.

Standard or School specific Martial Arts uniform is required to be worn. Those participating in Kumite must wear a mouth guard, in addition to fist, shin and instep protectors. Headgear is optional but recommended. Equipment is available for those not with their own gear.

Events may be divided into belt and/or experience levels to ensure equity in the competition. Events offered are subject to change at the discretion of Games Management, and all entries subject to vetting by the Sport Coordinator.

The Noel Hatwell perpetual trophy will be awarded to the Best and Fairest, and the Jim Stackpoole Encouragement perpetual trophy to the best spirited competitor.
