2013 EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION LUNCHEONThe MCCS Employee Appreciation Luncheon was held on Thursday Dec. 19, with approximately 600 people in attendance for the festivities. A traditional holiday meal from Bruce’s Coyote Kitchen was enjoyed by all. As were the games, which included creating a centerpiece, gift wrapping blindfolded and various guessing games. This year, divisions were also invited to participate in a gingerbread house decorating contest. Thanks to the Directorate for lunch, an extended break and the chance to relax and have some fun with our co-workers.

FITNESSCalories (and the importance of consuming them)
What is a calorie? In scientific terms it is the amount of energy that it takes to heat one gram of water one degree Celsius. Calories produce energy and it is important to fuel your body with energy producing sources. The most common energy producing source is carbohydrates, followed by fats and protein. Fats have the greatest energy yield but take more time and effort to break down, whereas carbohydrates are easily broken down to produce immediate energy.
Many fad diets promote low caloric intake (also known as hypocaloric diets.) These diets tend to drastically decrease the consumption of all calories. While there is a positive short term affect seen, the long-term affect is negative. There are immediate weight losses usually due to water weight loss, followed by protein weight loss. When the diet term is concluded the dieter tends to see an increase of their weight back to pre-diet standards or higher.
Studies show that low carbohydrate diets, such as Atkins, are successful for postmenopausal women, but hypocaloric diets tend to cause the greatest “yo yo effect.” This is due to a psychological defeatist mentality due to a lack of fullness. Other studies show that low carbohydrate diets, such as the Paleo diet, can be successful if the protein consumption and capsaicin consumption are higher, around 80% of calories, along with a regular calorie consumption level. The protein consumption allows the body to utilize the fat stores and protein stores while maintaining protein balances in the body. The Capsaicin creates a positive mental affect by releasing endorphins and helping to decrease the defeatist or depressed mentality. This allows the dieter to have a positive mental approach while making a permanent lifestyle change. The studies show that a permanent lifestyle change results in the greatest long term positive results of weight loss plans. As always, check with your doctor or registered dietician before beginning any diet plan.
