    Good LuckBARNSTORMERS!

Butch Hobson is hopeful thatthe 2013 season, his third asmanager of the Barnstormers, will bring an Atlantic Leaguechampionship to Lancaster.

    BY BURT WILSON

    Sports Writer

The Lancaster Barnstormersappear to be very good, once

again.Stormers skipper ButchHobson has assembled a team that hasno apparent weaknesses. The Barn-stormers reached the playoffs in 2011for the rst time in ve seasons.

Last year, after a record-setting regu-lar season, they reached the champion-ship series. They suffered a heart-break-ing loss to the Long Island Ducks when abunt single plated the winning run in theninth inning of the deciding game.

Now, the question is, can they take the

next step and deliver the Atlantic Leaguetitle to Lancaster?

Im going to always believe that Ivegot the best team on the eld, Hobsonsaid, and Ive got the best team in theleague and Ive got the team to beat.

I promised the fans here theyregoing to see the same quality of play (aslast season), the same quality of aggres-siveness and well win the champion-ship.

The Barnstormers spring roster islled with elite players. Eleven havemajor league experience and 12 othershave reached the Triple-A level.

They also have the reigning Atlantic

League Player of the Year (outelderBlake Gailen) and the leagues Pitcher ofthe Year (Dwayne Pollok).

This team looks great, said rstbaseman Daryle Ward, one of those

former big leaguers. I like the kind ofattitude we have in the clubhouse. Theguys are loose and having fun and weregelling together.

IneldWard will be part of an ineld that

includes:Travis Denker, who batted .515 and

    had four home runs and a league-record12 RBIs for the Barnstormers in theplayoffs last year. Denker will probablystart the season at second base but canalso play rst and third;

    Kody Kirkland, penciled in at third,hit 17 homers for Lancaster last season,and is healthy after battling back frominjuries last year;

    Kevin Howard, who hit .381 in 31games for the Stormers in 2011 beforebeing signed by Toronto, is set to start atshort;

And Olmo Rosario, who can playsecond, third and short and was MVP ofthe Can-Am League when he played forHobson at Nashua in 2007.

The Barnstormers have four outeld-ers, who Hobson says will play every

Dwayne Pollok was Pitcher of the Year in both the Atlantic League and the Venezuelan Winter League.

    BY BURT WILSON

    Sports Writer

Dwayne Pollok has a quietcondence. He puts inhis work, doesnt bringattention to himself. Does

whatever it takes for him to be suc-

cessful. Does whatever he can tohelp his team.

Pollok started last season in the Lan-caster Barnstormers bullpen, pitchingmiddle relief. Some would have sulked.Pollok just did his job. When a spotopened in the rotation, Pollok steppedin and had one of the best seasons everfor a Barnstormers pitcher.

The 6-4 right-hander won his rstseven decisions, the rst time a Lan-caster pitcher had ever accomplishedthat feat. He nished the season 14-4,tying for most wins in the AtlanticLeague and posted a league-leading2.30 ERA. In 145 innings, he walkedjust 29 and allowed only eight homeruns, while striking out 113.

This season, to the delight of Lan-caster manager Butch Hobson and theBarnstormers faithful, Pollok is re-turning to anchor the Stormers staff.

He loves to compete, Hobson saidof the San Antonio native, who is pen-ciled in as the opening day starter. He

loves to pitch. Hes a great guy and hesa good clubhouse guy. After pitching for the Barnstormers

last season, Pollok played in the Ven-ezuelan Winter League where he was7-2 with a 2.36 ERA, which resulted inhim also being named Pitcher of theYear in that league.

    Despite those accomplishments,

Polloks focus trumps frustrationnAfter a highly accomplished

2012, hes still waiting for an

afliated deal. But Lancastersace is ready to bring new knowl-

edge to the mound this season.

Pollok did not get a deal with an organiza-

tion afliated with major league baseball.

You would think especially ater the

year last year and then what he did in

Venezuela (he would get a deal), Lan-

caster pitching coach Marty Janzen said.

The scouts, youd think would see him

in Venezuela. I dont understand it. Its the

politics o baseball. I guess i youre not

21 years old and throwing 95 (mph) ...

Pollok himsel has taken it in stride.

It is what it is, he said. Its the game o

baseball. Theres a little bit o rustration

going on, but I just love playing the game.So whoever gives me the shot to play, Im

going to go out there and do my best.

And whatever comes o it, Im going

to go out there and control what I can.

And whatever I cant control, thats in

    somebody elses hands.

Polloks attitude and talent are wel-

comed back by the Barnstormers and

he has also added some knowledge this

    winter in Venezuela.

Learning how to get those veteran hit-

ters out, was what he was doing. Youve

got to be really smart when you go out

to ace those guys. And youve got to be

ocusing on your game every time out.

So, I think going to winter ball like

that in the oseason has really preparedme to come back to the states and per-

    orm well here.

Pollok, 32, played our seasons at

Texas A&M beore being selected by the

White Sox in the 27th round o the 2003

    drat.

    He is 52-45 with a 4.01 ERA in 10

minor league seasons, 387 games. Pollok

    saved 38 games or Class A Winston-Sa-

lem in 2004. He spent all or parts o ourseasons in Triple-A and has also pitched

    in Mexico.

He considered pitching in Asia, but elt

that it would be easier to get an afliated

deal i he was in the states.

But until that call comes, he will pitch

    or the Barnstormers.

Luckily theres a great team here in

Lancaster that gives me a chance to go

out and play and keep doing what I love to

    do, he [email protected]

What more does BlakeGailen have to accom-plish to catch on with abaseball team thats afli-

ated with a major league club?Last year, playing or the Lancaster

    Barnstormers, Gailen earned threeMVP awards.

The outfelder was voted the teamMVP by Barnstormers ans. Aterhitting .338, he was named the AtlanticLeague MVP, and he was chosen byBaseball America as the IndependentLeagues Player o the Year.

Gailen, 28, was rewarded with a con-tract rom the Colorado Rockies. Butdespite playing well this spring, he wascut on the fnal day o the teams minor

league camp.I was surprised to hear he gotreleased, Barnstormers batting coachLance Burkhart said. What else can hedo? Hes very good in the clubhouse. Heworks hard. When you sign out o theindependent league, youre kind o play-ing against a stacked deck.

Gailen himsel is not bitter andretains a positive attitude about thesituation.

They didnt have space (on theroster), said the laid-back Caliornia

native, who is a cut-up o the feld, keeping the locker room loose withjokes and impressions. Unortunately,or a guy like mysel, who they donthave any money invested in, Im the onewho goes. Thats just the business.

Gailen, who hit 22 home runs (fthin the league) and had 89 RBIs (ourthin the league) last season, is also notdiscouraged.

I did well enough (in spring train-ing) to have made a team, so it wasnt

about that, he said. They didnt sendme here (back to the Barnstormers)because o my talent. They sent mehere because they literally did not havea place or me.

So the Rockies loss is the Barn-stormers gain, at least or now. This isthe best place or me, i Im in indepen-dent ball, Gailen said.

Were glad to have Blake back,

Stormers skipper Butch Hobson said.He a very good outfelder. You saw

what he did oensively. He has a goodapproach at the plate. He takes what thepitcher gives him and doesnt try anddo too much. And or someone his size,(Gailen is 5-9) he has some pop.

And hes a very good outfelderdeensively, too.

Many times last season Gailen racedinto the let-feld corner to retrieve aball and hold the batter to a single, or

throw him out at second when he wastrying to stretch a single into a double.

Gailen, who played his college ballat UNLV, also led a league in battingin 2011, hitting an astonishing .406 orLincoln in the American Association. That earned him 29 games at the end othe season with Arkansas, the DodgersDouble-A afliate.

Then last season he helped the Barn-stormers come within a run o winning

Gailens hard luck benef its BarnstormersnDespite earning three MVP

    awards last season, Blake

Gailen is back playing in Lan-

    caster, and the Stormers are

    lad to have him

Blake Gailen led the Atlantic League with a .338 average last season and he was fth in home runs (22).

ravis Denker is having unplaying baseball again.

Denker joined the Lancast-er Barnstormers last season

or the teams fnal 48 games, plus theplayos, and in the process rediscov-ered the joy he got rom the gamewhen he was younger. Oh, and he alsoplayed really well or the Stormers.

Now hes back with the Barnstorm-ers or the 2013 campaign, ready tocontinue the excitement and success hehad in Lancaster last season.

My plan or this year is to just toreally enjoy or have un every day,Denker said.

In the past, when Denker played

in afliated ball, having un was not apriority. He was always checking thedepth chart, seeing who was in ront ohim at the levels above his.

Now, with the independent Barn-stormers, thats no longer a concern.(Stormers skipper) Butch (Hobson)puts together a team and says, Go outand play and play to win, Denkersaid. Nothing else matters. Thatskind o what we all want. Old ashionedbaseball, almost.

Growing up, baseball was really theonly sport Denker played. That and, surfng and skateboarding like everyother Caliornia kid, he said.

At 12 he ound out he was good atbaseball when he was invited to join anAAU travel team that participated in anational tournament.

He also got instruction rom a neigh-bor, Chris Bironus, now a scout or the

Rangers. That led him to playing in aleague with other elite players. As aresult, he was selected by the Dodgersin the 21st round o the 2003 drat.

Denker played in the Dodgers sys-tem until he was traded to San Fran-cisco in 2007. In 2008, he got the callrom the Giants asking him to report tothe majors.

It was amazing, he said o going tothe big leagues. It was a dream cometrue. All that hard work leading up tothat. I wish I could still be there. ButGod has a plan or me, (and) I eel like(Lancaster) is where he wants me.

Jerry Owens, who hasnt played baseball since 2009, is glad to be back in the game with the Barnstormers.

    BY BURT WILSON

    Sports Writer

Jerry Owens wants to play baseball again. The former major leaguer, who has notplayed in over three years, nearly retired. Now hungry to get back in the game, hes

making a comeback with the Lancaster Barn-

stormers.I denitely missed it, Owens said of his time awayfrom baseball. I missed playing. I missed the routine, the camaraderie. I love the game. I can play a Sundayday game and go home and watch Sunday night base-ball.

Owens didnt take very long to show his teammateshe still had it. In the Barnstormers rst exhibitiongame, Owens took off at the crack of the bat, racingfrom his position in center eld to right-center to makea diving catch to rob Camdens Eric Lis of an extra-base hit.

When I saw that ball, I thought thats denitely in

the gap, Barnstormers hitting coach Lance Burkhartsaid. That was an unbelievable catch.

That kind of athleticism allowed Owens to excel insports growing up. He played football, baseball andbasketball through his sophomore year of high schoolwhen he decided to give up baseball to concentrateon the other two. His baseball coach told him, I thinkyoure making the biggest mistake of your life.

Owens was good enough as a wide receiver to earna football scholarship to UCLA, which is where helearned about working hard and being mentally tough.

Growing up I was always the best and never had toearn the job, he said. But now at college everybodywas the best player at their school and now were allin the same room. I really learned how to deal with theadversity of not necessarily being the guy.

And in college when youre 17 or 18 as a freshman, youre going against 22-year-old seniors. Maturity-wisethose guys are men and Im still a kid. Ability-wise,were all on the same playing eld. But mentally, theywere so far ahead of me. I had to grow up fast athleti-cally from a mental standpoint.

And I had to learn how to workhard, up at 5 a.m. running. My freshmanyear at UCLA was integral in my career

because I had to learn how to just be an-other guy. And how hard are you goingto work to get to the next level?

He played two seasons at UCLA,when he decided he also wanted to playbaseball. He considered playing bothfootball and baseball for the Bruins. Butthe coaches told him if he played bothsports, he probably would not get a proshot at either. And the baseball coachcould not guarantee any playing timesince he had not played in four years.

After a sprained ankle, the fth in a

series of nagging injuries, kept him on

Somethings Bruin in the outf ieldnFleet-footed center elder Jerry Owens, a

former major leaguer and UCLA recruit, is a

new addition who brings speed to his positionand to the top of the Barnstormers batting

    order.

wens: Takes over in center f ield

the football sidelines, he left the game. He trans-ferred and ended up playing baseball at the Mas-ters School, a small Christian NAIA school in hishometown of Santa Clarita, Calif.

Being a lefty, he thought he would pitch. But hecouldnt nd the strike zone. The coach sent him tocenter eld and hes been in the outeld ever since.

His stats were good enough that he was draftedby the Montreal Expos in 2003 and he played twoseasons in their system before being traded to theChicago White Sox.

In September of 2006, he made his debut in themajors. I literally just started crying, he said ofthe call from his agent telling him the White Soxwere putting him on their big league roster.

I called mom right away. I was so excited. Look-ing back where I was when I was 18 and had a goalof being in the NFL. Now, seven years later, Imgetting called to go to the major leagues. It was justa crazy journey.

He played well in those games at the end of 06,hitting .333 in the 12 contests. The next year, he wasa regular in the White Sox outeld. In 93 games, hehit .267 and stole 32 bases.

In the spring of 2008, when the center eld jobwas his to lose, he injured his groin on the rst dayof camp. And later that spring, reinjured it. So herehabbed at Triple-A and spent the rest of the sea-son there, except for a September call-up.

In 2009, he once again started the season atTriple-A. He was called up in early April to ll in

for an injured Dewayne Wise. He played 12 gamesbefore being released and signing with Seattle. Hehit .323 in 100 games for Tacoma, the MarinersTriple-A afliate. But until he arrived in Lancaster,it was the last time he played.

He missed the entire 2010 season when he hurt

his arm playing for Washington in spring trainingand had surgery. He didnt get healthy until thesummer of 2011.

By that time things in his personal life hadchanged. He married and had a daughter and wasliving in Phoenix. He was considering settling downand retiring from baseball.

But his relationship dissolved and he movedback to California. Last summer, when he told afriend, Im going to probably retire, the friendresponded, Why? Owens didnt have an answer.Thats when he dedicated himself to getting back in

shape to play baseball again.I was out of the game long enough to miss itenough to have the drive to come back, he said. But while I was out, I got to rehab and raise mydaughter from the time she was born. So, it was ablessing both ways.

Now, hes a Barnstormer. Hes a very good cen-ter elder, Lancaster manager Butch Hobson said.

A big part of his game is bunting. Hes goingto be big for us at the top of the lineup. Hell get onbase. Hes got a good eye at the plate. And hes stillfast.

But the biggest thing is, hes got the desire toplay [email protected]

In 175 at-bats, Denker hit .297 lastseason for the Barnstormers with 11homers, 15 doubles and 35 RBIs.

Were really happy to have Travis

back, Hobson said. He was tremen-dous for us last year.

Denkers postseason was evenbetter than his regular season for theBarnstormers.

He had two or more hits in sevenof the eight playoff games, batted .515with four homers and tied a leaguerecord with 12 RBIs.

He has good at-bats, Hobson said.Hes a very aggressive hitter, veryaggressive swinger. Hes going to give

us that power bat and hell be a .290 to.300-plus hitter. And hes versatile in the eld, play-

ing third, second and rst last seasonfor Lancaster.

And despite the fact that he is anex-major leaguer, Denker still workshard. I think his attitude is whatmakes him good, hitting coach LanceBurkhart said. Every day he comes tothe eld, he knows what he needs to doand he gets his work done.

Denker is not sure how much longerhe will play but he is making sure thatthis season he will take the time toenjoy the game and the camaraderie ofhis teammates.

My wife is letting me play so Imjust going to keep going as long as Ican, Denker said. Im just trying todo my best here and if I can get pickedup, that would be a blessing. If not Imjust going to enjoy my time here andjust get better.

The Barnstormers already thinkhes good enough and are happy tohave him in Lancaster.

OutfeldBesides Gailen, who led the Atlantic

eague with a .338 average last season,

    he outfeld will have Joe Mather, whospent all o last season with the ChicagoCubs and was in spring training thisseason with the Phillies;

Ryan Harvey, the man known or hisonster home runs, was second in the

eague last season with 27;And ormer Chicago White Sox

speedster Jerry Owens, who is makingcomeback ater not playing or three

seasons, will play center and lead o.We have speed, we have power,

Hobson said. We have guys who can getn base and guys who can hit the longall. And were going to be pretty goodn deense.

PitchersOn the mound, the right-hander Pol-

ok returns to anchor the starting rota-ion. Righties Jay Buente, Will Savagend Alan Johnson, who is back rom lastears sta, and lety Lenny DiNardore the other

    starters, Hobsonsaid.

    The managersaid that initially,he Barnstorm-

    ers will close bycommittee.

Weve got theersatility to beble to do that,

    even mixing andatching in the

    inth inning,ntil someone

shows me he deserves to be the closer,

    Hobson said.Hobson mentioned Yoslan Herrera,

honny Montoya, Robert Hinton, Jasonrquidez, Derrick Loop, Tim Dillardnd Eric Wordekemper as possible late-nning guys.

In the middle innings he will count onrain Grening, Jason Richardson, Brianallet and possibly Nate Reed, a young

pitcher rom the Reading area who im-pressed in spring training. He said RossPeeples, the only inaugural member othe Barnstormers still with the team, could fll any role needed.

McCaskey product and ormer majorleaguer John Parrish is with the Barn-

stormers and willbe added to theroster at some

point but will notbe ready by open-ing day. Parrish isrehabbing romshoulder surgery.

I like whatweve assem-bled, Hobsonsaid o the pitch-ing sta, andthe things that wecan do with that.

Theyre experienced guys and 98 per-cent o the time theyre strike throwers.I like guys that pound the strikes zone. Idont care how many hits they give up.Walk, walk, three-run bomb, thats notgood. Solo bombs, thats OK. Thats goingto happen.

    CatchersPetey Paramore has excelled han-

dling the catching duties all spring. Fran-

cisco Hernandez, who returnsrom last season, was to bethe starter but he has beenstuck in his native DominicanRepublic with visa issues. Both are switch hitters andboth will see a lot o playingtime.

    BenchAaron King, who is con-

verting rom a pitcher to anoutfelder, Japanese infelderTsuyoshi Takashima and JeLundell were competing or utility roles.

I dont want to say were stacked,Hobson said. I think were a good, solidveteran club.

The team, at least on paper, lookspoised to contend. But this is not theBarnstormers team that will be hereat the end o the season. Players leavewhen they get signed by afliated teams,

others get hurt, and still others wontperorm as expected. So the goal is toget o to the best start and get the mostwins possible while this team is intact.

Ater that, the key to the season, the key to every season in the AtlanticLeague, is how good are the replace-ments and how quickly do they arrive?

But Hobson is very good at flling

those vacancies. He has good connec-tions and players want to play or him.

I heard rom a ton o people (that)Lancaster is the place to be and Butch isthe guy to be playing or, Owens said. His goal is to get us out o here (andback to afliated ball). But he also wantsto win. So this is the team Im on now. Iplay or Butch and I play or the Barn-

stormers. My goal every single day I walk in

here is to be the best player I can be orthis team.

Most o Hobsons players have that at-titude, and because o it, this may be theyear the championship trophy returns toLancaster.
