The major emphasis at Carus continues to be the publicationof works for choirs and vocal ensembles. Two important300th anniversaries are already casting their shadows on thehorizon: Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach was born on 8 March1714 in Weimar and Gottfried August Homilius was born inRosenthal on 2 February of the same year. Both composersshaped music decisively after 1750 and occupied key posi-tions in Protestant church music for decades: C. P. E. Bach,Bach’s second eldest son, was Music Director of the mainchurches in Hamburg from 1767 until 1788, and Homiliuswas the Dresden Kreuzkantor from 1755 to 1785. In thecoming year we will offer vocal scores and performance mate-rial for the new Complete Edition of the works of C. P. E.Bach.

The number of vocal works by the father, Johann SebastianBach, is continually being expanded. In the coming monthswe will be publishing several new editions of his cantatas, in-cluding such moving works as Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu ChristBWV 177. Also, in an effort to reflect the most current stateof musicological research we are replacing an older edition ofActus Tragicus (BWV 106) with a newer one.

In order to enable smaller choirs to perform Dvořák’s Mass inD major in a colorfully orchestrated version, Joachim Linckel-mann has made an arrangement for soli, choir and wind quin-tet. Linckelmann has already arranged a chamber version ofthe Brahms Requiem for Carus which has proven to be successful.

Last but not least, we are continuing to expand our musico-logical complete editions. The Stuttgart Schütz Edition will seethe publication of the Cantiones sacrae this year, while theReger Edition follows with a volume of chorale preludes fororgan. Finally, with the start of the first ever edition of thecomplete works of Giacomo Puccini we will be fulfilling along cherished wish on the part musicians and scholars for reliable editions of the works of one of the most frequentlyperformed Italian masters, a composer whose music is situ-ated between the late romantic and modern eras.

Instead of an opening chorus Cantata BWV 42 be-gins with a magnificent Sinfonia in the style of theBrandenburg Concertos. It is possible that Bach tookthis movement from a concerto which he had com-posed earlier. The first aria, for alto with obbligatooboe and bassoon, could be derived from themiddle movement of this concerto. The heroic bassaria, a statement of the certainty of faith, forms aweighty counterpart to the opening movement.

After breaking off the annual cantata cycle at theend of March 1725 Bach set a series of cantata textsby the Leipzig poet Christiana Mariana von Ziegler,who maintained one of the first literary-musical salons. The large scale chorale chorus ties this workto the chorale cantatas. The central bass aria “Auf,auf, mit hellem Schall” with solo trumpet is note-worthy since in place of a middle section in the aria,here Bach employs an accompagnato recitative.

The cantata Freue dich, erlöste Schar BWV 30 isone of Bach’s last church cantatas. Originally com-posed as a parody of the cantata Angenehmes Wie-derau BWV 30a for the Feast of St. John’s Day in1738, it still enjoys a great popularity today. Its ex-traordinary length (12 movements) made it possiblefor Bach to employ four vocal soloists who, togetherwith instrumental soloists, choir and orchestra con-tribute to the generally festive character of thiswork.

Among Johann Sebastian Bach’s largely unknown vocal works is a compilation of wedding choraleswhich have survived in an autograph set of partsfrom the 1730s. These are four-part chorale settingsof well-known hymns for treble voices accompaniedby two horns, colla-parte strings and continuo. Thechorales can still be performed today at weddingswithout any great difficulty.

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714–1788)

C.P.E. Bach’s Oratorios and Cantatas now available at Carus

In 2013, in anticipation of his 300th anniversary, vocal scoresand performance material for four important vocal works byCarl Phillip Emanuel Bach are in preparation. These are basedon the Complete Edition of the works of Carl Philipp EmanuelBach which is being published by the Packard Humanities In-stitute in Los Altos, California, in cooperation with the Bach-Archiv Leipzig and the Sächsische Akademie der Wissenschaf-ten. Leading Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach scholars from Europeand the USA are engaged in this undertaking.

It is the aim of the Packard Humanities Institute to make theworks of this important Bach son well known again and itsupports this goal through a very favorable retail price for these high quality scores. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach was an ex-tremely prolific composer who enjoyedan outstanding reputation during his life-time with the result that his music be-came known far and wide. The earlyworks were influenced by the BerlinSchool. In his later works, however, thiscomposer devel-oped a thoroughly indi-vidual style, independent of contempor-ary fashions, which is to be found espe-cially in the sacred vocal works writtenduring his years as Director of Music inHamburg (1768–1788).

C. P. E. Bach’s Dank-Hymne is a large scale cantataby the 72-year-old composer written in Hamburg atthe beginning of 1785 on the occasion of the birth-day of an unknown personality. The cantata consistsof two self-contained parts, the first of which is ahymn of praise to the Almighty God and to crea-tion. Only in the considerably shorter second sectionis the birthday mentioned, albeit indirectly, and inthe final chorus a praise of creation is again intoned,ending with the words “Schön ist Gottes Welt”(God’s world is beautiful). The Dank-Hymne isamong Bach’s most modern vocal works and clearlypoints towards Joseph Haydn’s great oratorios.

The Morgengesang am Schöpfungsfeste Wq 239arose through a personal contact between the poet(F. G. Klopstock) and the composer. As in hardly anyother work, the poem breathes the spirit of the closeof the 18th century. Here, wholly in the sense of theEnlightenment a natural phenomenon, the sunrise,is used as a parable for the resurrection, which isthus made tangible. The spectacle of nature is thestarting point for Bach’s composition, an eight-part,through-composed cantata for two sopranos, choir,flutes, strings and basso continuo. This “feast ofcreation” is intended as a commemoration of Sunday, the 7th day of creation.

Homilius left behind an unusually large repertoire ofchorale arrangements for organ and melody instru-ment which were probably written during his tenureas organist at the Dresden Frauenkirche (1742–1755). An edition of all of his most well-known contributions to this genre was published byCarus in 2008 within the framework of the editionof his selected works (37.106). The present editionnow offers a selection of chorale arrangements onhymns which are still sung to the same melodiestoday.

The cantata written for the consecration of a church,Fahre hin, du Lust der Welt, surely does not fit within the creative output of this Dresden Kreuz-kantor. Whereas normally he was not sparing in hisopulently scored, large choral movements, in spiteof the festive occasion for the work, this chamber-music-like cantata of all three movements is a gem.However, Homilius composed it during the timewhen, as organist of the Dresden Frauenkirche hewas not responsible for polyphonic music. Possiblythis lively solo cantata was written on commissionfor a church in the suburbs of Dresden.

The sacred composition Gott will mich auch probie-ren was written during the early years of his tenureas Music Director at the Court of the Landgraves. Init he attempted to make the genre of the motet use-ful for church music in Darmstadt through innova-tive design and varied structure. The present choralemotet is a notably charming and catchy piece ofchoral music (easy to mid-level difficulty) which isexcellently suited for use in today’s worship services.

The Te Deum of 1832, large scale festive music, im-presses through rapid changes of expression andwarm orchestral colors. The 15-movement composi-tion unites magnificent sound with at times eight-part choral movements and delicate arias. It experi-ments with unusual instrumental sonorities and ensemble groupings. The piece becomes highly dra-matic when blaring trombones and trembling stringsannounce the Last Judgment, whereupon a sextet ofsoloists enter with a plea for salvation.

This is a beautiful and rewarding composition by aformer member of the famous St. Thomas BoysChoir in Leipzig and later Dresden Kreuzkantor. Inspite of the relatively easy level of difficulty, its effectwill not fail to impress. This three-movement Christ-mas cantata for mixed choir and orchestra makes itpossible to perform the piece both in worship ser-vices and in concert.

Hasse’s Miserere setting is one his most frequently performedworks. Carus will therefore complete the available perform-ance material for this work by publishing a new vocal score.

The Miserere in C minor exists in several authentic versions.The first version from 1735 was intended for the girls at theOspedale degl’Incurabili in Venice. Carus offers a later versionfor mixed voices. Originally composed for use within the con-text of the church festivities during the latter part of HolyWeek, this work comprises eight sections each, with a con-trasting character. The ritornellos captivate immediately, inwhich short phrases and sequential units are elaborated intofine lines, as if sung by a bel canto-like solo voice. Instead oftrying to achieve the effects of fright and horror, Hasse’s music refers rather to the consolation which is promised thosewho plead for mercy, and through its beauty wishes to movelisteners and to lead them to devotion.

Immediately following his first opera Rheinbergercomposed a small dramatic cantata for children’svoices in 1863. It is based on a story from the Gospel of St. Mark. Among the highpoints of thecantata is a scene of awakening fashioned as a choral recitative with an expressive piano part and alarge final chorus. Both of these helped to make thecantata very popular in Rheinberger’s days withboys’ as well as girls’ choirs.

The 27 concerti of the Symphoniae sacrae II are milestones inthe development of the German-language sacred concertofor virtuoso solo singers, instruments (mostly violins) and basso continuo. Published one year before what became, byfar, the more well-known Geistliche Chormusik of 1648, theyshow another artistic side of Schütz. In the Stuttgart SchützEdition the works are now presented for the first time ever inan edition based on a comprehensive new investigation of thesources which does justice to the differentiated source situa-tion. Based on the Complete Edition, published in 2012, allworks with performance material will now be released in separate editions.

Together with the Partita in E flat major the Partitain B flat major is without a doubt one of the mostimportant compositions of Johann Ludwig Krebs, apupil of Bach. Both works are from a six-part cycle,of which only the these two Partitas and the Partitain A minor have survived. Although in these worksKrebs has oriented himself very closely on themodel of his mentor Bach, nevertheless they showstrong individual moments of creativity, wholly in-debted to the sensitive (“empfindsam”) style.

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was a gifted organ im-proviser, yet there exist only a few surviving exam-ples of his improvisations. One of these will befound in the Bodleian Library in Oxford. Here ashort fragment on the chorale “O Haupt voll Blutund Wunden,” which was probably improvised within the context of the great Bach concert whichMendelssohn presented in the St. Thomas Church inLeipzig in 1840. Robert Schumann reported in detailhow Mendelssohn improvised on this chorale andhow he introduced the BACH motive in the courseof his improvisation. After careful study of Mendels-sohn’s organ sonatas, in 2007/08 Rudolf Lutz ex-panded the fragment into a sonata in the style of thecomposer.

Georg Reutter’s concise Concerto for Harpsichord inF major, published by Carus in a first edition, mayhave been composed in around 1750. The themesof this work in three movements are both succinctand appealing, while Reutter’s modest instrumenta-tion (2 violins and basso continuo) is employed withesprit. In the melancholy, restrained middle move-ment both violins provide the foundation for the solo passages performed by the keyboard instru-ment. Especially in places of sacred worship this con-certo would be more effective if an organ instead ofa harpsichord is used.

For the first time the complete works of Giacomo Pucciniwill be presented in a scholarly critical edition. Upon petitionto the Italian Ministry of Culture, the project for the edition,under the aegis of the international research institute “Cen-tro Studi Giaocomo Puccini,” was recognized as an “Edizione Nazionale.”

The Edition will contain around 25 volumes. The first vol-ume of the edition, the famous Messa a 4 voci con orches-tra, is scheduled to be published in spring 2013. GiacomoPuccini, born in Lucca in 1858, is one of the most per-formed composers on the international opera stage. Next to Mozart and Verdi, his operas are among the most per-formed works in the world. His vocal and instrumentalworks for church and concert hall, on the other hand, haveonly recently begun increasingly to find a place in the publicconsciousness, following decades of being relegated to obli-vion. In the course of time the awareness grew that Puc-cini’s complete works demanded a new evaluation. Increas-ingly he is no longer considered to be the last representativeof an obsolete Italian bel canto, but rather as a musicianseeking a new departure at the dawn of modernity. Hiscompositional processes are more akin to the experimentson the borders of tonality pursued by such contemporariesas Debussy, Richard Strauss, Mahler and Schönberg, all ofwhom he knew and for whose works he showed a lively interest.

The prerequisite for a closer examination of such issues andinterconnections is a correct edition of his works, which untilnow has not been available but which will be fulfilled forthe first time with the publication of the first scholarly critical Complete Edition of the Works of Puccini.

Today the Cantiones sacrae (1625) remain in the shadow ofSchütz’s much more well known motet collection, the Geistli-che Chormusik of 1648. This is due on the one hand to theirLatin texts and to the devotional texts which often are not taken from the Bible, and on the other hand to the highly ex-pressive style of the Cantiones. Schütz demands that the sing-ers be open to a highly unusual music rich with dissonances.The reward for this venture will be an extraordinary depth andexpressiveness and music truly beyond compare.

In 1992 the Stuttgart Schütz Edition – the edition of thecomplete works of Heinrich Schütz – was taken over byCarus-Verlag, which has continued to publish it since then.It is a complete edition founded on a critical examination ofthe sources which presents today’s users an unproblematic,legible rendering of the music. In contrast to other Schützeditions the works are presented in their original keys andranges, i.e., they are edited untransposed. All editorial addi-tions or suggestions are indicated diacritically. The volumesinclude all essential information concerning the history ofthe works, their transmission, performance practice and liturgical function. Original clefs, as well as the ranges of thevocal parts and the upper instrumental parts are prefixed tothe first brace of the score.

Under the direction of Hans-Christoph Rademann, togetherwith Carus-Verlag Stuttgart, the Dresdner Kammerchor willrealize the first complete recording of the works of HeinrichSchütz by 2017. With a total of 22 CDs and countless con-certs the first German composer of European stature will begiven a tangible monument.

The fourth volume of the section of the Reger Edition devotedto his organ works comprises, in chronological order, the chorale preludes composed between October 1893 and November 1914 in Wiesbaden, Weiden, Munich, Leipzig, andMeiningen. The composition of chorale preludes accompaniedReger throughout his entire career, even though they werecomposed primarily in the years from 1900 to 1902 and 1914(Opus 135a). No musical family has made such a significant contribution tothe history of European music as the Bach family from Thurin-gia, in Saxony. From the 17th through 19th centuries onefinds outstanding musicians among the family who partici-pated in all levels of musical life whether it be town, court orchurch music – their works span all genres of vocal and instru-mental music and reflect the stylistic developments of the in-dividual eras in which they lived.

Within the framework of the Bach-Repertorium research pro-ject at the Sächsische Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Leip-zig, thematic catalogs are being compiled for all members ofthe Bach family. With catalogs which include incipits, texts, tables and indexes, the compositions will be described using a unified set of criteria and they will be based on the latest musicological research.

To distinguish him from his brothers, in the 18th century Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach was known as the “Bücke-burger” Bach. His extensive opus encompasses all genres ofinstrumental and vocal music. Systematic research has led tothe rediscovery of a number of works previously believed tohave been lost, as well as to works which until now have beencompletely unknown; furthermore the existence of other lostworks also has been verified. Thus today, for the first time anoverview of the creative output of the second youngest Bachson is possible, which now occupies its own independent po-sition in the history of 18th century music.
