Who We are

August 26th was designated, by Congress, as Women’s Equality Day. It commemorates the 1920 ratification granting women the right to vote. It is hard to believe that less than one-hundred years ago it took amending the constitution to achieve the level of equality we enjoy today. In our military world, women are essential in both active and supportive roles; we are fortunate that our society and government have developed several ways to adopt change. The role of women in active duty roles began in the area of administration. Women have progressed from admin to admiral. In 1972, Alene B. Duerk (Director of the Navy Nurse Corps), became the first female Admiral. In 1970, Anna Mae Hays (Chief of the Army Nurse Corps) and Elizabeth Hoisington (Women’s Army Corps Director) were both promoted to Brigadier General (womensmemorial.org). In March of last year, airforce.mil reported, Senate confirmation of Air Force Lt. Gen. Janet Wolfenbarger for promotion, making her the first female four-star general in Air Force history. A discussion of women in the military would not be complete without mentioning the top ranking female Marine who recently celebrated her last day of active duty service last month, Major General Angela Salinas. As noted in a recent Marine Corps Times article, Maj Gen Salinas served as the first woman to command one of the Corps’ recruiting stations and in 2006 became the first woman to be named Commanding General of a recruit depot, MCRD San Diego. These examples demonstrate the significant contribution of women in all branches of armed services. This issue of the Preview highlights the many FREE services MCCS offers around the Air Station, many unavailable at other commands to include our annual Semper Style Event August 31. Semper Style is hosted by Marine Corps Family Team Building and your Marine Corps Exchange (253-3754), the cover and feature article are a small sample of what is in store for you at this great event. The hometown feel of the air station, makes me forget how far we are from home and those items we need for the Marine Corps Ball. Semper Style is held early enough to order in those custom items that may not be available here in Japan, just in time for the Ball. In closing, we welcome our new air station leadership, Colonel Boucher and Sergeant Major Massi, as well as our incoming personnel and family joining us this PCS season. We look forward to working together in the spirit of continuous improvement, “Giving Our Best.” As the summer comes to a close, I encourage everyone to enjoy the many great resources of our host nation and MCCS offer. The pullout included in this month’s edition is a guide to a small sample of what is available both in and outside of our gates to make your stay in Iwakuni memorable and full of adventure. Have fun and stay safe.

Wine review: ROBERT MONDAVI PRIVATE Selection PINOT NOIR

By MIchEllE PRINcE Wine consultant

MCX AUGUST Wine SpeCiAl

Robert Mondavi Private Selection Pinot Noir reflects the character of a cool vintage. The late Robert Mondavi was a true pioneer in the California wine industry and their Private Selection wines were introduced to feature the cool climates of North and Central Coast grapes at a moderate price. This well balanced wine underwent malolactic fermentation and aged ten months in American and French oak to soften the acidity and tannins for a mellow easy drinking wine to enjoy on its own. Pinot Noir is considered the world’s most prized light faired food friendly wine. This smooth versatile Pinot Noir will pair nicely with fish, pork, poultry, pasta, ramen noodles, sushi, and even pizza. Robert Mondavi Private Selection Pinot Noir wine is a great companion to your Summer and Fall grilling season.

...THE FOUR LETTER F WORD!

Page 22: 2013 August Preview

If the saying “we learn something new every day” is true and had to pay money for knowledge, we would be broke. Don’t worry, because MCCS offers educational classes at no charge so you can learn something new thing each day.

Came to Japan without knowing Japanese? Cultural adaptation Program teaches a Survival Japanese Class every other month. This four day, entry level class will give you enough basic skills to communicate off base. Continue your language skills by visiting the library. Rosetta Stone will immediately immerse you into your favorite language, but to take your language teacher on the go, check out the Transparent Language online app for your smartphone. Visit the library for registration instructions and password, and start learning one of 80 languages.

The library also offers Universal Class, which provides non-credit online instruction for over 500 courses. anything from art, business, parenting and health, Universal Class has sessions provided for your personal enrichment.

Marine Corps Family Team Building offers free classes for all age ranges. For kids, there is L.I.N.K.S. for Kids, which helps youth 7-12 years of age adapt to the Marine Corps lifestyle. For adults, there’s L.I.N.K.S. for Marines, L.I.N.K.S.

for Sailors, and L.I.N.K.S. for Spouses (in English and Japanese). There are also various LifeSkills classes – Emergency Preparedness, Safe & Sound Workshop, Interpersonal Communication, Conflict Management. also available are classes to help during deployment, and one of the most popular classes, 7 habits for highly Effective People.

Being a new parent isn’t easy – and babies don’t come with instruction manuals. That’s why the New Parent Support Program offers Daddy’s Baby Boot Camp/Mom’s Basic Training. There’s also parenting and discipline classes, to include potty training and dealing with temper tantrums.

Worried about your health? Need to quit smoking? Visit health Promotions. They’ll take you to the Commissary and show healthier alternatives in the Buy This Not That class. Their six week Tobacco Cessation class will start you on your way to become tobacco free. The staff can also teach you effective exercises to get the most out of the hITT (high Intensity Tactical Training) Center.

If you take advantage of all the free services MCCS offers, you may not need to see the Personal Financial Manager. however, not everything in life is free. So if you are looking to manage credit, buy a home, or determine the best way to use your thrift savings plan, the Personal Financial Manager is available for one on one counseling or unit briefs.

The average cost of a concert in Japan may range from $70-$200. add the cost of transportation and lodging, and you’ve spent almost $1000. Not many of us have this disposable income, so MCCS brings the concerts to you. Through the Summer Music Festival, enjoy an entire day of local and national bands – all for FREE. our partnership with the USo and armed Forces Entertainment also brings musical acts, comedy shows, sports clinics, and autograph sessions throughout the year.

This may not seem like entertainment but it is something to keep you busy: aerobics classes. at other bases, they charge for aerobics classes, but here they are 100% free.

MCCS offers free Wi-Fi in public areas: air Terminal, Club Iwakuni, Crossroads Food Court, hornet’s Nest, Laundromat, Library, Marine Lounge, Strike Zone, Temporary Lodging Facilities, youth & Teen Center, and yujo hall. getting a job. It doesn’t cost anything; but once you have one, it will pay you. It will also provide you with experience that you may need to further or start a career. apply online at usmc-mccs.org/careers. Search for jobs in Iwakuni, or if you are about to move to another base, search for those jobs as well. The Career Resource Manager, located in Bldg 411, can also help tailor your resume to give you an added boost. he also provides free workshops on what to do during the interview process.

If working doesn’t cover childcare costs, think about becoming a Family Child Care Provider. While you are watching your child, get certified to watch someone else’s. you’ll make some extra money, and they will appreciate the extra time. Visit the CDC for more information. Sometimes that perfect job is not yet available. While you’re waiting, consider volunteering. you’ll get the experience that you’ll need and are able to set your own hours.

Who said there’s no such thing as a free lunch? Participating in the Jingle Bell Jog in December will get you a free meal at the end of the run. you might get hungry before December, so check out the weekly Friday appetizers at Indian Joe’s (officers), K-Bar (Staff NCos) or Landing Zone (Enlisted) Club. This is not your usual chips and dip; we’re talking about real food.

If you are an unaccompanied service member, the Single Marine Program serves all you can eat pizza once every quarter at the hornet’s Nest and Marine Lounge. Be sure to set aside time to PT the next day. The hornet’s Nest also hosts an annual SMP Birthday Bash, where the staff is grilling hamburgers, hot dogs and serving them with all the sides.

There’s also free food for the kids. Each month, School age Care Center and youth & Teen Center celebrate birthdays with cake and ice cream. During Kids Day of Play in September and the Month of the Military Child Celebration in april, the youth & Teen Center serves up hot dogs, popcorn, cotton candy and snow cones as a way of saying “Thank you” for their service as military children.

around the air station. There are bins of coupons waiting for you to use at the MCX and Commissary. Coupons are good six months after their expiration date. Save your Commissary receipts, because the person with the most savings in a three month period wins a free massage!

Time is also money. and having childcare is invaluable, but sometimes expensive. For certain programs, MCCS offers reimbursable childcare, so you can have “me time”.

and, this magazine that you’re reading is also free! It’s very difficult to put a price value for all the free things that MCCS offers. But without these services the quality of living would be valued very low. Take advantage of all MCCS has to offer, your experience in Japan will be a lot richer because of it.

People pay thousands of dollars for a trip to Japan, and they typically only stay for a few weeks. Most of us stay for two to three years; and the chances of us coming back are not so high. So it’s good to travel while we are here. While ITT and SMP trips are a great value, there are some secrets to traveling for free. Information, Referral & Relocation has cultural adaptation trips that provide free transportation, even though admission fees are on you. These trips are offered about once a month, and reservations are required.

If you are planning your own adventure, check out the free gear at gear Issue: camping, kayaking, canoeing, rafting, skiing or snowboarding. Tables, chairs, coolers (with ice) and grills are also available if you plan on having a get together.

COMMUNITY ARTICLE

As you wrap up summer vacation and begin planning for fall and winter events, don’t forget to

prepare for the Marine Corps Ball. The planning will soon fill our thoughts and empty our bank accounts if we are not careful.

In August Marine Corps Family Team Building (MCFTB) and the Marine Corps Exchange (MCX) will host Semper Style.

Let us help you prepare for a fantastic ball and make sure you do not end up on the “what not to wear list.” What can go wrong getting ready for the ball? Maybe you can’t find your make-up brush or maybe the tights that hide your “not so flattering areas” have a run. Make it easy on yourself, remember this event is for your Marine. Try to avoid outshining your spouse. Instead, strive to compliment them. Be the graceful and el-egant woman next to your service member

by remembering and following rules of formal event etiquette.

by Jennifer Carr, Family Readiness and Deployment Support Trainer

ETiquETTEELEGANCE

Wear a floor length dress. Don’t try to dress for the prom, because high school for some of us was a long time ago and those

styles, colors, and cuts belong in the past. Remember simple is elegant

and elegance is appreciated at the Marine Corps Ball.

This is a formal event and your dress should follow that ambiance.

At some point, you will have to stand and walk around. Wear comfortable, yet stylish and complementary heels. It

is not necessary to wear 6-inch heels, there is not an award given out to the tallest spouse at the event. No one is going to criticize you for wearing a more appropriate 2-inch heel. Feel free to bring some flats to change into, don’t get athletes foot and go barefoot. Remember there is a lot of standing and dancing so you will be on your feet.

DON'T

Wear appropriate shoes.

When thinking about hair styles and makeup for the ball keep it simple and elegant. An easy

updo and a smokey eye can add a lot to an already put together look. You are not going out to the club, so save the dark, edgy look for another time. Remember less really is more in the make-up department. So whether you go for the sleek and chic look or the tumbling waves of curls just remember to keep it sophisticated and let it compliment your ball gown. Don't forget to schedule your makeup appointment at the MCX makeup counter.

Don't be a hot mess: Keep it

clean & elegant

The Marine Corps Ball is an annual event to celebrate the birth of the Marine Corps. Try not to get too stressed out. Don’t compete

with other spouses. Make this night about your Marine. Strive to be as classy and fashionable as possible when you are walking arm-in-arm with your spouse. In 5 years, do you want your ball

picture to be hanging up on your living room wall or tucked away in a drawer because you can’t believe you wore that? Most

importantly have fun and enjoy the evening!

Neon green might not be the most appropriate choice to match with those impressive blues. Remember that color and cut really do matter. Strive for chic. Buy a dress that fits your body type now

and not the one you claim you will have by the time the ball arrives. Rest assured that you can always have the dress taken in, which is easier than letting it out. Be honest with yourself, do you really want to feel like you cannot breathe or sit down without slouching?

Make sure your dress compliments your Marine's dress blues.
