1.1. University Overview

Located along the southwest coast of Taiwan in Tainan City, Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology (STUST) is a competitive international university dedicated to providing students a well-rounded education in both the humanities and technology. Founded in 1969, STUST has quickly moved from a junior college of technology to a full-fledged university with an emphasis on both teaching and research. STUST is composed of 4 colleges (The College of Engineering, The College of Business, The College of Digital Design, and The College of Humanities and Social Sci-ences) and 23 departments, 1 Business program, 30 master programs, and 4 doctoral programs. We currently have 18,567 enrolled students, of which 237 are international students hailing from 27 dif-ferent countries. Our faculty of 554 (413 of which have doctoral degrees) strives to establish a strong global mindset and independent thinking in each of our students. The annual budget for STUST is around 50 million US Dollars. The campus area is about 16.5 hectares.

STUST provides a comfortable living environment for international students; each dorm room is moderately furnished with a shower, bed, wardrobe, bookshelf, desk, and telephone. Students have to prepare bedding, pillows, blankets, bed sheets, and a mattress (all of which can easily be obtained at a local mega mart). Phones are for inbound calls only, outbound calls cannot be made from dorm phones. Pay phones are available in the lobby of the dorm. Dorm reservations are automatically made for international students. Residence halls have laundry facilities and a TV room. You can rent a refrigerator to keep in the room and a kitchenette is available at the end of 4th floor in Dorm 6. For more information, please check out our website: http://engwww.stust.edu.tw/node/553.

The school now contains 33 buildings, including the Auditorium, Teaching and Research Build-ing, Internship Workshop, Library, Recreation Building, Student Center, Dormitories for male and female students, Classroom Buildings and so on. In addition to these facilities, there are well-built

facilities for sports, including tennis courts, volleyball courts, basketball courts and a track and field. Furthermore, a great number of trees and flowers have been planted on campus. The soothing green lawn, foliage, and shade beautifully contrast with all of STUST’s red brick buildings. Almost year round you can find students either studying or grabbing a bite to eat outside in one of the many gar-dens or outdoor recreational areas.

Holding internationalization as the primary educational goal, STUST has been proactively dedicated to equipping students with a global perspective and keeping pace with the trend of globali-zation.

To fulfill this mission, the Global Master of Business Administration (GMBA) is a two years English MBA program. To keep up with the trend of business globalization, the Global Master of Business Administration (GMBA) emphasizes on the nurturing of professionals in the globalized business management field. summoned by Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan on behalf of the Ministry of Education of Taiwan in 2011. We also provide scholarship for the students. The maxi-mum length for a recipient to receive the scholarship is two years for master’s student.

On the basis of this framework, the courses are designed by integrating the knowledge about business and management from a diverse and wide-range aspect instead of a focused and narrow-range course structure. We are practical oriented and stress on case study and analyses. Also, the international students from countries around the world study at GMBA program together enhance the exchanges and communications in a global manner; this advances the experience sharing activities on business running and management in different levels.

The curriculum emphasizes cross-national business management plus the integration of inter-disciplinary business knowledge and practical applications, which is supplemented by business visits and various types of activities. All the courses are conducted in English and incorporate the most cur-rent knowledge and practices implemented in today’s marketplace. Students will study with an inter-national student body with multicultural backgrounds to hone the global communication skills. The international faculty with varied specialties provides a diversified curriculum that fulfills students’

One of the more interesting aspects of the GMBA program comes from the multicultural diver-sity of students who come to study. Together, their friendships and interaction enhance the experience of the classroom mirroring the activities found in the global business environment.

The nearly 200 GMBA alumni have gone on to enjoy careers at home and abroad. Many are recruited by overseas enterprises as managers and supervisors. Others have continued their education by pursuing doctoral degrees and becoming professors; completing the circle of knowledge began at STUST.

26 272013 Admission Instructions2013 Admission InstructionsChinese Language Center

Chinese Language Center was originally named the Sinology Center. In 2005, we began to admit international students to study Chinese. Later that year, we established teaching programs for those who intend to teach Chinese to speakers of other languages (CSOL). Our center is continually recruiting international students and training pre-CSOL teachers, as well as offering Chinese teacher training courses.

In 2006, our center was renamed the Chinese Language Center as recommended by the Min-istry of Education. The school community also agreed to the admonition and labeled Chinese Lan-guage Center as its first-rank division. In the same year, our center was among the 26 Chinese Lan-guage Centers in Taiwan, certified by the Ministry of Education, who can admit speakers of other languages. Furthermore, our center recruits international students who intend to study Chinese and provide them with listening, speaking, reading and writing classes. We can also provide research assistance. Working with the Ministry of Education, we promote national academic activities and cultivate elite Chinese teachers.

The Chinese Language Center at STUST was established to teach international students and visiting foreigners Chinese as a foreign language. Classes are based upon learners’ needs, ranging from individual tutorial classes, small-group classes of 5-10 students, and regular classes of 20 or more students. Currently, we are offering basic & intermediate classes to assist learners in developing their four language skills: speaking, listening, writing, and reading.

The special features of our program are:

Selective separation into small classes

Classes are separated according to skill level and are characterized as beginner or in-termediate. There is also a class designed to help with pronunciation. Student numbers are limited to 15 students per class.

Emphasisonlistening,speaking,readingandwritingcomprehension

Classes are designed to improve these 4 major areas of study: Chinese conversation, listening practice, reading comprehension and writing practice.

Incorporating daily and practical Chinese into curriculum

The needs of the students are put first. Chinese teaching materials are pulled from real life experiences and are meant to help with daily living as well as supplement the practicality of core curriculum.

Fusion of language and culture

All classes emphasize the importance of cultural understanding in order to help students grasp grammatical and cultural concepts that would otherwise be hard to understand without an introduction. Students not only learn the language but Taiwanese culture as well.

Usage of multimedia

Classes such as beginner’s conversation and Chinese for tourism use comics, movies and animation as part of their teaching materials.
