Community of Freedom and Joy
A woman who wants freedom for herself is courageous.
A woman who desires freedom and a better
life for her own daughter is inspired.
Prianka is both courageous and inspired.
Prianka was abandoned by her husband in a village in Bangladesh. Left
without resources or a means to support her young daughter, she came
to Kolkata about a year and half ago in search of work. Unfortunately, like
many other women in dire circumstances in Kolkata, she found that the only
work available was in a red light area, and she was forced to sell her body
in a brothel. Her life was one of quiet desperation and survival until she was
invited by one of the Sari Bari women to find a new life at Sari Bari.
From the start of her time at Sari Bari, Prianka has embodied a spirit of
courageous hope. She has been inspired and driven by a desire to make a
new way for herself and her daughter. After diving whole-heartedly into the
training at Sari Bari, she graduated in September, ready to start her new life as
a skilled artisan and as an empowered woman of freedom. Prianka recently
shared that she already sees good things happening as she moves from
“want” to “enough,” and she believes for abundance in the days to come.
Prianka’s life is a freedom story in the making and one that will inspire
many more women to walk into a life of FREEDOM and HOPE.

Our Journey
Sari Bari opened in 2006 after four years of steady presence
and friendships with women in the red light areas of
Kolkata, India. The love, solidarity, and desire for freedom
born out of these friendships became the foundation
of Sari Bari’s work for hope, justice, and freedom.
Kolkata Units

from the local red light area and with three staff members. In November of the
same year, the unit moved to a larger rental space in order to provide opportunities
for freedom for more women in Kalighat. Sari’s Bari’s growth in the early years

themselves and to being “prophets of freedom” in the red light area as they invited
their sisters onto the freedom road. The Kalighat unit now employs 20 women.
The second unit opened its doors in August 2009 in the heart of
Sonagachi, the largest red light area in Kolkata. 23 women from the dark
lanes of “the gach” embarked on their journey of hope and freedom,
and today, there are 38 skilled artisans at the Sonagachi unit.
The early years of Sari Bari provided the foundation for what Sari Bari has become
today. Many of the women who joined Sari Bari in 2006 and 2007 have become the
managers, trainers, and team leaders at the production units. They have become
indispensable to the business and community, and they are indeed heroes of Sari Bari.

introduction of Producer Forums in February 2012, the women have contributed to
decisions on salary and raises, quality control standards, and various infrastructure
issues. The overall environment of Sari Bari has been bolstered with deepened

Freedom for a Sari Bari Family
Priya began her training with Sari Bari in February of 2007. She came to Sari
Bari with a determination to create a better life for herself and her family.
Early on, Priya struggled as family pressures and doubt nearly snatched
freedomfromhergrasp.Now,fiveyearslater,withafuture-orientedfocus
and an air of determination, she continues to press into freedom.
For years Priya has continued to dream for a better tomorrow for her children. In May
of 2008, Priya received an interest-free loan from Sari Bari to buy land in a nearby
village.Sheiscurrentlysavingforthecostofbuildingmaterialstofulfillherdreamand
build a house for her family on that land. On some days, she even adds that Sari Bari
should open a production unit on her land so that more women can have freedom!
In addition to the loan, Priya has parternered with Sari Bari in paying for the education
of her son, an extremely creative and artistic child. The Sari Bari School Support
program helps Priya to cover her son’s school educational expenses, including costs for
uniforms, books, supplies, and a tutor to help him study for year-end exams. Because
of Priya’s own vision and dreams for the future, along with support, encouragement,
and services offered by Sari Bari, the future is indeed bright for Priya and her family.
