Men’s OutlookThe 2011 cross country season for the Lumberjack men looks extremelypromising and has the potential to top any previous season at NAU. Thesquad placed ninth at last year’s NCAA Cross Country Championships.

The Lumberjack men will rally behind the leadership of its five seniors, butwill also rely on some other returning runners, as well as four incomingfreshmen for competition on the team.

After graduating three seniors from last year’s team, including two-timetrack national champion David McNeill, the team will be led this year byseniors Diego Estrada and Jordan Chipangama, both All-Americans in theirown right. Estrada placed 16th at last year’s national meet, and alsoplaced in the top 5 in both the indoor and outdoor 5,000-meter runsduring the track and field season. Chipangama, who missed all of lastseason due to injury, placed fifth at the NCAA Cross CountryChampionships in 2009. Also competing in their last year of eligibility areAndrew Belus, another competitor in the national championship, MattColoe, and John Yatsko.

“We have a very complete team this year,” said Eric Heins, Director ofTrack & Field and Cross Country. “A couple guys will be able to build ontheir strong finishes in past years, but our team as a whole is morecompact than before in terms of the levels of talent.”

The Lumberjacks naturally have lofty goals in mind, and they don’t stop atwanting to achieve their fifth consecutive national top-10 and ninth in thelast 12 years. The men look to bring home NAU’s first nationalchampionship, and they may just have the talent to do it. Heins spoke tothe fact that aside from their returning All-Americans, the team isholistically strong, making it hard to determine the talent differencebetween the #3 and #10 spots.

“We have a much stronger group of guys than we have had traditionally,”said Heins. “With those guys stepping up, I really think we can improve onour finish last year.”

Aside from the senior leadership, the Lumberjack men will expect a lotfrom junior returner Tim Freriks, who competed at the nationalchampionships last year. Freriks hopes to build on an all-conference finishat the Big Sky Cross Country Championships and provide continuity goinginto next year.

With some familiar faces out front and some unfamiliar faces likely to stepup and make a name for themselves, the Lumberjack men look forward tobringing home hardware that NAU has yet to see.

Lauren Justus

Women’s OutlookThe Lumberjack women’s cross country team of 2011 looks to hit the groundrunning, literally, and get back to its winning ways after an injury-plaguedseason left them shorthanded in 2010. The NAU women return their top twofinishers from last season in juniors Rochelle Kanuho and Lisette Michaels.

Also returning to the squad after a year off due to injury are seniors KortneeBurton and Haley Lawrence, who bring valuable experience to a team loadedwith incoming freshmen.

“The women’s team this year has some strong leadership,” said Director ofTrack & Field and Cross Country Eric Heins. “Having Kortnee and Haley backthis year is huge for our team.”

Burton, hampered by a nagging injury last season, looks to build on her successin last year’s outdoor track season, where she collected all-conference honorsat the Big Sky Outdoor Championships in the 10,000-meter run. Lawrence islooking to get back in action after a lower-leg stress fracture kept her out forthe better part of a year. The two runners made the All-Big Sky team in 2009.

Kanuho, a native of Flagstaff and a graduate of Coconino High School, will addthe most continuity from last year’s team, building on a fifth-place finish at theBig Sky Championships and a 28th-place finish at the NCAA Mountain RegionChampionships.

The Lumberjacks will also rely heavily on a remarkably strong recruiting classthat includes some hoping to make a play for the top five, including freshmanLauren Justus.

“We have very strong recruits this year, and Lauren has already shown that sheis ready to step up and make a play for the top five,” said Heins.

The women’s team has also benefitted greatly from the experience ofgraduate assistant coach Mo Huber, who enters her second season with theteam. A graduate and former cross country and track & field athlete from theUniversity of Washington, Huber has been extremely valuable for the women’sprogram in the past year, and Heins believes she will continue to be a greatasset to the squad.

“Whenever you have a male coach in charge of both programs, it is alwayshelpful to have a female on staff, especially one with her credentials,” Heinssaid.

She has already shown her ability to recruit top-notch talent to NAU, judgingfrom the strength of this year’s recruiting class. Being able to form those newstudent-athletes into strong conference and national competitors willhopefully bring the program to new heights.

The Lumberjack women have a great opportunity to regain their dominanceatop the Big Sky Conference. With returning talent leading the way andrecruits rounding out the team, the women’s squad looks forward to being aformidable presence all season.

During his term as president, Dr. Haegerhas guided the university to new heightsin student enrollment in Flagstaff andacross the state, answering the call fromthe Governor's Office and the stateLegislature to make higher educationaccessible and affordable to all Arizonacitizens. He also has ushered theuniversity into its largest building boomsince the 22-year term of former NAUPresident J. Lawrence Walkup.

As the nation grapples with anincreasing need for scientists, healthprofessionals, engineers and technicalexperts, Dr. Haeger is re-emphasizingthe university's efforts to attract andretain qualified teachers who will drawstudents into these fields.

Further, he has fully endorsed a nationaleffort to increase institutionalaccountability, explaining that NorthernArizona University must perform on alevel that demonstrates its significanceto students and to society.

Among other university achievementsunder his leadership:

• Tuition guarantee. NAU PresidentJohn Haeger instituted a pilot "block

tuition" proposal that would guarantee first-time, full-time freshmen and transfer studentsthe same tuition rate for eight semesters, bringing predictability to the cost of highereducation.

• 'Finish in Four' guarantee. NAU promises toprovide students the advisement help andcourses necessary to obtain their degree withinfour years.

• Expansion of nursing and the healthprofessions. The university has placed specialemphasis on graduating more students innursing and developing or expanding programsin the health professions, includingoccupational therapy, athletic training andphysicians assistant.

• Commitment to research. With a goal tounderpin the university's distinctive researchprofile, President Haeger has instituted NAU'sfirst office of Vice President for Research. InYuma, ground has been broken on a 12,225-square-foot building that will providecollaborative research opportunities inenvironmental disciplines and willaccommodate expansion of four-year degreeprograms in engineering and nursing.

• High Country Conference Center. Dr. Haegerinitiated a joint partnership among NAU, thecity of Flagstaff, the Arizona Board of Regents,Sodexo Conferencing and Drury Hotels to builda 42,000-square-foot conference center and anadjoining hotel and parking structure. Thecomplex will be a financial, cultural andeducational asset to the university and Flagstaffcommunities. Consultants have estimated theeconomic benefit to northern Arizona to beabout $7 million annually.

•Largest gift in university history. The Collegeof Business Administration was able to acquirethe largest gift in university history, a $25million donation from prominent businessleader William Franke. The college wasrenamed The W.A. Franke College of Business.

• Arizona Cardinals partnership. The NationalFootball League's Arizona Cardinals agreed tocontinue to operate their training camp at theFlagstaff campus. About $2 million is added tothe northern Arizona economy as a result of theCardinals training camp.

•'Going green.' The university is home to thegreenest building in Arizona and one of thethree greenest in the world after receiving a"Platinum" rating for its Applied Research andDevelopment building shortly after theuniversity earned "Gold" ratings for buildingsthat house Engineering and The W.A. FrankeCollege of Business. Dr. Haeger also is a chartersignatory of the American College & University

Presidents Climate Commitment, created as anavenue for university leaders to define andaddress the challenges of climate change.

• Opening a door to China. Dr. Haeger, whoserves on the American Association of StateCollege and Universities' Committee onInternational Education, has signedagreements with several Chinese universitiesthat will enhance the international flavor ofNAU's campus as well as offer Chinesestudents a degree from NAU and their homeuniversity.

The Big Sky Conference enters its 49th year of

athletic competition in 2011-12. The Big Sky is an

NCAA Division I member in all sports, with

member institutions classified in the Football

Championship Subdivision (formally I-AA). For the

sixth and final year, the Big Sky is a nine-team

league.

The current lineup includes Eastern Washington,

Idaho State, Montana, Montana State, Northern

Arizona, Northern Colorado, Portland State,

Sacramento State and Weber State. Northern

Colorado is the newest member of the league,

having joined the conference in 2006.

The Big Sky will expand to an 11-team league with

13 football-playing members on July 1, 2012.

Southern Utah University and the University of

North Dakota will join as full members. Cal Poly

and UC Davis will join as football-affiliate

members.

The league has become one of the strongest

Division I conferences in the West and is a national

leader in the Football Championship Subdivision.

Six times, Big Sky teams have won the Division I

National Championship, including Eastern

Washington in 2010. A Big Sky team has played for

the national championship each of the past three

seasons.

The Big Sky Conference was established in 1963 by

six charter members – Idaho, Idaho State,

Gonzaga, Montana, Montana State and Weber

State. Those six schools formed the foundation of

the Big Sky before the league expanded in 1970 by

adding Boise State and Northern Arizona.

Gonzaga left the Sky in 1979 and was replaced by

Nevada, which gave the league eight members.

The conference grew to nine schools in 1987 with

the addition of Eastern Washington.

The 1990s saw change in the makeup of the

league, beginning in 1992 when Nevada departed

and put the Big Sky back at eight teams. In 1996

Boise State and Idaho left and at the same time

the conference added Portland State,

Sacramento State and Cal State Northridge. The

Big Sky maintained nine teams for five years

before Cal State Northridge departed in the spring

of 2001.

The Big Sky spreads across eight states spanning

from the Pacific Ocean to the Rocky Mountain

Front. The Big Sky is represented along the entire

west coast with schools in Washington, Oregon

and California. League schools also range up and

down the Rocky Mountains with institutions in

Montana, Idaho, Utah, Arizona and Colorado. Of

the eight western-most states in the contiguous

United States only one, Nevada, is not

represented in the Big Sky.

On Feb 25, 1963, the name Big Sky was adopted by

the six presidents of the charter members as the

name of the new conference. The name Big Sky

originated in a novel written by the late A.B. (Bud)

Guthrie of Great Falls, Mont., in 1947 entitled “The

Big Sky.” Jack Hollowell, a former Montana

advertising director, promoted the Big Sky theme

for the Treasure State. While on a track and field

trip from Pocatello, Idaho, to Missoula, Mont., the

legendary Dubby Holt of Idaho State saw a

“Welcome to Big Sky Country” sign as his team

entered Montana. Holt, and his athletes thought

“Big Sky” would be a perfect name for the new

conference. Harry Missildine of the Spokane

Spokesman-Review called for the newly formed

league to be named the Big Sky Conference in his

column dated Feb. 20, 1963.

The Big Sky sponsors championships in 14 sports,

including men’s and women’s cross country,

indoor and outdoor track and field, basketball and

tennis. In addition, there are also championships in

football, and women’s volleyball, golf and soccer.

The Big Sky will add a softball championship in the

spring of 2013.

The 2011-12 season will mark the 24th year that the

Big Sky Conference will sponsor championships in

women’s sports. The former Mountain West

Conference existed from 1982-88, sponsoring

championships for women’s sports at the same

institutions the Big Sky had men’s programs. The

Big Sky merged with the Mountain West in 1988,

forming one league for both men and women.

Doug Fullerton, the fifth commissioner of the Big

Sky Conference, is in his 17th year at the helm.

Fullerton took over the Big Sky on July 1, 1995,

replacing longtime commissioner Ron

Stephenson, who passed away in 2011.

Stephenson served the league for 14 years. Steve

Belko was the commissioner from 1977-81, while

John Roning held the post from 1971-77. The first

league commissioner was Jack Friel, who served

from 1963-71.
