The 2005 women’strack season isexpected to be as goodas 2004 and should bemuch better as theBulldogs continue toimprove and expectanother assault on therecord book. TheCitadel only lost onesenior, Rose Rodriguez, but she will be missedas she ran a verystrong leadoff leg onboth relay teams lastyear. On the up side,

the track and field squad has a very good group ofladies returning and a strong group of freshmenthat should make an impact right away. SeniorsManda Rogers, Mary Thornton and KellyPesterfield will lead this year’s team of very youngand talented athletes.

100 / 400 / Hurdles:

Junior Miriam Crawford returns with the fastestsprint times from last year and has a personal-bestof 13.00 in the 100 meters and 26.07 in the200m. She will be challenged by freshman JodiWhittle from Jamaica who posted high schooltimes of 12.00 in the 100m and 25.4 in the 200m.Freshmen ChristineDeVasto and AllisonTaylor will also add tothe Bulldogs’ sprintdepth while the 4 x100 relay should bemuch improved.Montair Bookerreturns for her juniorseason after sittingout a year. Twin sisterMonesha Booker hastransferred to SouthCarolina to finish herdegree.

800 / 1500:

Sophomore Laura Hewston broke two indoorrecords last season and is looking to add a fewoutdoor events this year. Hewston establishedherself as the number one distance runner as afreshman and will lead a group of middle distancerunners that include Mary Thornton and MandaRogers in the 800 meters. Beaufort high schoolstar freshman Wilma Harp will also run the mile/1500m with Hewston and they should push eachother all year. Freshman Felipa Reyes will pushThornton and Rogers and also drop down and run

the 400 meters.

5,000 meters /Steeplechase:

Sophomore AmandaRawl will carry most ofthe load in the longerdistances, whichinclude the 3k and 5kraces. Rawl had a verygood cross-countryseason this year aftergetting injured herfreshman year.

Amanda Rawl stayed healthy and performed wellthis last year. The addition of freshmen WilmaHarp and Christine DeVasto should help thewomen’s team to continue to improve.

“The Citadel invitational was our best effort of theyear,” said head coach Jody Huddleston. “Wilmaand Christine both ran under 21 minutes andAmanda ran a personal best of 21:06.”

A trip to the Furman Invitational also highlightedthe Bulldog’s schedule as they competed on one ofthe toughest courses in the Southern Conference.

“I was very pleasedwith senior MandaRogers running22:08 at the FurmanInvitational,”commentedHuddleston. “Shehad her best time ofthe year on thehardest course thatwe ran.”

Both Rogers andfellow senior MaryThornton ran crosscountry for the firsttime this season.

“We were in a position were we needed somedepth and they both wanted to help in any waythey could,” remarked Huddleston. “With our topfour runners being sophomores and freshmen, Ithink we are finally able to have a group ofrunners that we can recruit towards an effort toshow more and more success.”

The 2004 track season had its ups and downsfor the men’s program. As always, The Citadellost some very important members of the team tograduation. The combination of Alex Prince,Robert Killian, Marcus Cohen, Chris Franklin, TonyKimbrough, Travis Taylor and Hunter Reid had ahand in scoring 59 of 89 points at both the indoorand outdoor championships. It is probablyimpossible to replace senior talent with freshmantalent but the Bulldogs had a good recruiting classthat will help in the future. Another low point wasnot getting the baton around the track at theconference championships in the 4 x 100 relay. But the Cadets bounced back the next week inwinning the military 4 x 100 at the Penn Relaysfor the fourth consecutive year. With threefreshmen and a senior on that team, The Citadelwas very fortunate and was able to stay focused infront of such a huge crowd at the Penn Relays. The 2005 track and field squad will dependheavily on several members of the team to pick upwere they left off last season:

100 / 400 / Hurdles:

Sophomore ThomasPressley, who will leada young group ofsprinters reached thefinals last year in boththe 100 and 200meters at theconferencechampionships.Sophomores QuintinWright and CameronEasley should play amuch larger roll thisyear and are the othertwo members of the 4x 100 team that wonthe military relay at the Penn Relays. FreshmanJonathan Vallejo will compete for a spot on therelay along with several upperclassmen. The 400meters will be wide open for the Bulldogs thisyear. Prince was such a strong competitor and itwill be hard to find someone to fill his shoes.Freshman Chris Seabold will run the 400m and

Men’s Track & Field Outlookadd depth to the 4 x 400 relay team. JuniorThomas Cummings has finished fourth in the 400hurdles the past two years at the conferencechampionships. Cummings has his sights set onbreaking the school record of 52.91 set in 1990 byAnthony Brevard, as well as a conference title.Freshman 400m hurdler, Dan Sagmiller, will trainwith Cummings and should be able to help pushCummings toward the school record.

800 / 1500:

Junior Marcus Butler is ready for a big year on thetrack. Butler ran cross-country this year toprepare for track season and is much strongerthan in 2004. Nagginginjuries the past twoyears has hamperedButler, but the Bulldogshope he has been ableto put those injuriesbehind him as he hasthe potential to postvery fast 800-metertimes. Senior VinceBechtel, who will alsorun the 800m and themile, missed themajority of crosscountry season with aninjury and spent mostof the Fall getting ready for track season.Sophomores Will Wilson and Charles Kutz will runthe 1500/mile this year and run the longer legs ofsome of the relays, such as distance medley. Kutzhad a very solid freshman year and is muchstronger this year. Wilson, who played soccer inhigh school and is new to the track, learned agreat deal last year and has shown hugeimprovement during the cross-country season thisyear. As Wilson learns more race strategies andgets into the right race, he will not only surpriseThe Citadel but himself as well. All Wilson needsnow is more confidence in himself. Freshmen RayGuistizia and Steven Craig will also run/train withthe milers.

Men’s Cross Country In Review5,000 meters / Steeplechase:

Seniors Nick Gastley and Marc Quesenberry are setto take over the two events that Robert Killianhandled the past two years. Gastley was hurtduring the2003 seasonbut recentlyfinished a verygood cross-country seasonat the numberone positionthat had beenheld by Killian for three years. Quesenberry satout the cross-country season following surgery atthe beginning of last semester and should beready for the coming track season. SophomoreMatt Holmes will also be an asset and add depth inthe distance events.

Throws:

The coaching staff will look to the sprinters andthe throwers to carry most of the load this year.Senior Rick Austin, junior Chris Petty, andsophomores Zach DiBois and Alex Croskey allshowed a great deal of improvement last season

and should continue toimprove this year.Austin scored pointsfor the Bulldgos in fourthrowing events at lastyear’s championships, while DiBois upped thefreshman record in thehammer by over thirtyfeet and shouldimprove on that thisyear. All four workedvery hard in the offseason and came backstronger and quicker. They will all showimprovement this

season and the Bulldogs hope to see some bigthrows as the season progresses.

The Citadel men’s cross county team completed the2004 season with senior Nick Gastley representing thesquad in the NCAA Southeast Regional held at EastCarolina University. Gastley finished the 10K race in atime of 34:39.

The cross country season got off to an ominous startas the Bulldogs lost senior runner Marc Quesenberryto injury before the season even got underway. Thefirst three meets went well with sophomore Will Wilsonleading the Bulldogs to a second place finish with atime of 16:16 in a 5K race at the College of Charlestonmeet held at the Dixie Plantation.

“Will improved his time by 53 seconds over hisfreshman year as we placed two runners in the topfive,” said head cross country coach Jody Huddleston.

The following week the Bulldogs traveled with Furmanto Annapolis, MD to compete in the Navy Invitational. The Citadel took seventh place in the race withGastley leading the Bulldogs with an 8K time of 26:35.

“The trip went well until the morning of the race whenwe woke up to the remnants of hurricane Gaston andran in heavy rain and wind,” commented Huddleston.“However, our times were better than when we ranthere two years ago as Nick Gastley finished 23rd andran one minute and ten seconds faster this year on avery challenging course.”

At the Citadel Invitational, the Bulldogs showedcontinued improvement as the squad finished secondout of seven Division I colleges. The Bulldogs alsoplaced three runners in the top eight. Gastley, Wilsonand sophomore Matt Holmes each ran under 27minutes for the 8K race.

“It has been a few years since we have had at leastthree runners under 27:00 in the same race,”remarked Huddleston. “With a freshman Ray Giustiziarunning 27:07, things were looking very bright. A fewdays later, number three runner Matt Holmes wasinjured and missed the rest of the season. Thatinjury seemed to take the wind out of our sails as weran okay in the next two meets. We just did not haveenough depth and did not run as well at theconference meet as we had hoped.”

Jody Huddleston and his staff continue to strive tobuild the men’s and women’s track and cross-country programs into competitive teams withhigh standards of sportsmanship. In his 19th

season with the Bulldogs the men’s program hasestablished or broken 15 indoor and 14 outdoortrack records. To date, 158 members, includingtwo women, have earned All-Southern conferencelaurels, 43 of which were individual champions.

The 2003-04 season was good for the Bulldogs asHuddleston led the men’s outdoor team to it’s thirdfourth-place finish in five years at it’s leaguechampionships. The men’s 4 x 100 relay team, comprised of Quintin Wright, Marcus Cohen,Cameron Easley and Thomas Pressley representedthe Bulldogs at the Penn Relays and took TheCitadel’s fourth consecutive title in the event thatfeatures all the military teams from the academies.

“We continue to improve as a team (both men andwomen) as a result of the efforts of Kris Kut andBrian Johnson. These two young men are thebackbone of this entire program and we would notbe as good or successful as we are without them. They both have full-time jobs and then come to

the track and coach until it gets dark and thenspend the next two hours recruiting. Brian is aschool teacher and Kris is the deputy director ofThe Citadel’s summer camp and they still maketime for these young men and women each day.”

Huddleston came to The Citadel from OklahomaBaptist in Shawnee, OK, where he served as headcoach for seven years. In 1984, he earned NAIADistrict IX Coach of the Year honors. Earlier thatyear, the Bison finished second at the leaguechampionships, the best track performance in 10years.

An all-America decathlete at Florida CommunityCollege, Huddleston set a new national, decathlonlong jump, Junior College record in 1975. Hetransferred to South Alabama and established twoschool records. Huddleston graduated in 1977with a Bachelor of Science degree in physicaleducation andearned a master’sdegree two yearslater in educationfrom the sameinstitution.
