THE UNIVERSITY

Life on The University of Alabama campus is defined by opportunities. If you want to get involved, join one of more than 300 student organizations, help plan concerts and speaker series, participate in intramural teams or run for student government.

If you enjoy the arts, you can take advantage of a rich and varied schedule of musical, dance and theatre per-formances, art galleries and exhibitions, lectures and readings by writers, poets and experts on every topic imaginable. You can enrich your knowledge of the state and University’s history by visiting one of UA’s fine muse-ums, which house countless historical artifacts and offer hands-on exploration opportunities.

From the architecture on campus to the landscaping, The University of Alabama campus is one of the most beauti-ful places in the state of Alabama.

The Ferguson Center, completed in 1973, was named for Hill Ferguson, a member of the Board of Trustees. Plans at the time called for the building to be constructed over Woods Hall, but it was built just to the north thanks to a student campaign to save the art building.

The Ferguson Center Game Room located on the first floor is the perfect place to unwind, test your skill at a video game, play a friendly game of pool or ping-pong, or enter a campus tournament. With seven pool tables, video games, a ping-pong table, computer gaming and televisions, the Game Room offers a fun escape to the daily pressures of college life.

The University of Alabama offers a complete education-al, cultural and social experience. Whatever your interests, you’ll find a group, an organization, an activity or a pro-gram that will appeal to you at UA.

The newly expanded Student Recreation Center offers first-class recreation facilities to students, faculty and staff. It includes two multi-use gyms, nine multi-purpose courts, weight machines, 1/8-mile jogging track, exten-sive cardio area, locker rooms, indoor swimming pool, dry and steam saunas, 12 lighted tennis courts, four aero-bics rooms, eight racquetball courts and a squash court—together encompassing more than 200,000 square feet. The facility’s outdoor aquatic area, which opened in the summer of 2003, features a lazy river, lap swim, large water-park-type slide and lots of deck space.

MAL M. MOOREA T H L E T I C S D I R E C T O R

The University of Alabama’s Director of Athletics since 1999, Mal Moore has made an indelible mark on one of the nation’s most storied athletic programs, leading a department that has enjoyed tremendous success athletically and academically while enjoying an unprecedented period of growth during his tenure.

Through his guidance, Alabama’s athletic department remains focused on his vision of having all Crimson Tide athletic teams and student-athletes competitive at the highest level nationally while continuing to ele-vate athletic facilities at the Capstone to premier status nationally for all sports.

During his tenure as Director of Athletics, Moore has overseen more than $200 million of capital improvements to University of Alabama athletic facilities. Those projects have encompassed the entire scope of all Crimson Tide athletic programs and have benefitted every Alabama student-athlete, coach, and administrator.

Throughout his multi-faceted career, Moore has worked with a diversified field of constituents, from fellow coaches and former players, to fans and the business com-munity. All of those experiences and relationships - in addition to his ability to unify those many constituents - have made him the ideal person to lead Alabama athletics in the 21st century.

His leadership has been crucial in helping guide Alabama through a period that has been, at times, extremely challenging. His guidance and effort helped Alabama ath-letics weather the storm, while continuing to move in a positive direction toward a future that holds great promise.

Moore’s dedication to, and love of, the University of Alabama was recognized on March 28, 2007, when as a permanent tribute to his lifelong contributions to The University of Alabama, the Board of Trustees of The University of Alabama System officially dedicated the facility formerly known as The Football Building as the Mal M. Moore Athletic Facility.

Under Moore’s direction, Alabama’s athletic teams have produced three national championships – the 2009 football title and the 2002 and 2011 NCAA gymnastics championships – as well as several Southeastern Conference championships, win-ning titles in football, gymnastics, men’s basketball, women’s golf, men’s golf, men’s cross country, baseball and softball; taking SEC tournament titles in both baseball and softball. Alabama athletes have earned some of the highest honors the SEC and NCAA have to offer, including SEC Athlete of the Year, SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, NCAA Top VIII, NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships and NCAA Sportsperson of the Year. These honors are over and above the individual conference and national titles that Alabama athletes continue to bring home to the Capstone on a regular basis.

In addition to making his mark on Alabama, Moore has also had a national impact as a key member of several prestigious NCAA and college football committees. Moore has served on the NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee, the SEC Athletic Directors Bowl Advisory Committee and the Big Six Conferences Minority Coaches Forum.

Moore’s distinguished record of service to UA began more than 50 years ago when he joined the Crimson Tide football squad as a scholarship player for Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant from 1958-62. Moore has the distinction of being a part of eight national championship teams (1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, 1979, 1992 and 2009) with the first coming as a player, the next six during his coaching career and the most recent during his tenure as director of athletics. As a player and coach, he was also part of 14 SEC championships and 27 bowl trips. He is the only individual connected with the Alabama program to be a part of eight national championships.

During a coaching career that spanned 31 years, Moore spent 22 of those at Ala-bama with stops at Montana State, Notre Dame and the NFL’s St. Louis/Phoenix Cardinals. At Alabama, Moore started as a graduate assistant under Coach Bryant in 1964, then as defensive backfield coach for six seasons (1965-70) before becoming quarterbacks coach from 1971-82, serving as the Tide’s first offensive coordinator starting in 1975. He would go on to coordinate all of the offensive plays for several of Alabama’s national championship football teams.

A 1963 graduate of The University of Alabama, Moore holds both an undergradu-ate degree in sociology and a 1964 Master’s degree in secondary education from the Capstone. Moore was born December 19, 1939, in Dozier, Ala. He and the late Mrs. Charlotte Moore have one daughter, Mrs. Steve (Heather) Cook of Scottsdale, Ariz., a granddaughter, Anna Lee, and a grandson, Charles Cannon.

UNIVERSITY LEADERSHIP

Page 7: 2011-12 Cross Country Media Guide

As president of The University of Alabama, Dr. Robert E. Witt has committed the University to an ambitious plan for academ-ic growth and achievement.

His goals include increasing enrollment by recruiting academi-cally talented students from Alabama and across the country, stimulating significant growth in research and strongly support-ing the state’s economic development efforts. Under his leader-ship, enrollment has reached record levels and now numbers more than 30,000.

Academic quality and scholarship opportunities for deserving students have increased significantly. The University ranks 6th nationally among public universities in the enrollment of Na-tional Merit Scholars and leads the nation in the number of

students named to USA Today’s All-USA College Academic Teams.

Since its inception in 2003, the University’s Honors College has grown exponentially, and cur-rently enrolls more than 1,300 freshmen each year. UA’s loyal alumni and friends continue to provide a high level of support to the University, with private giving having an important im-pact on the University’s ability to fund scholarships, faculty support and construction projects. Prior to joining The University of Alabama in 2003, Dr. Witt spent 35 years as a faculty mem-ber and administrator in the University of Texas System. He received his B.A. in economics from Bates College, his M.B.A. from Tuck School at Dartmouth College, and his Ph.D. from Penn State University. He serves on the boards of directors of the West Alabama Chamber of Commerce, the Black Warrior Council Boy Scouts of America, and the American Cast Iron Pipe Company. He is a member of the Tuscaloosa County Industrial Development Authority. Dr. Witt and his wife, Sandee, have five grandchildren.

First-year head coach Dan Waters will have the benefit of a roster that returns four runners who competed in last season’s NCAA Championships where the team earned an 11th-place finish after claiming an NCAA Regional title and finishing second in the Southeastern Conference. The veteran roster includes eight seniors and will be bolstered by veteran SEC scorers such as Carison Kemei, Joel Rop and Moses Kiptoo. Kemei and Rop both earned All-SEC honors in 2010 by helping the team to a second-place finish after winning back-to-back titles in previous seasons. At last season’s NCAA Championships, Kemei, Kiptoo and Rop all finished in the top 100 with Kemei recording a 46th place finish after finishing second at the NCAA South Region Championships. “On the men’s side we have some international athletes from Kenya that we’re going to be banking on,” Waters said. “They’ve been running hard all summer and they’re extremely fit. There could be some pretty special things that can happen but it’s going to come down to how well they buy into the program and how fast they can believe in what we’re trying to teach them and implement our strategies. I think we just need to bring that together for one meet for them to see ‘hey we can be pretty good.’” In 2011, the squad will aim to remain at the top of the SEC ranks while continuing its dominance in the NCAA South Region where it has won titles four straight years. At the 2011 regional meet, UA ran away with another title as all five scoring runners finished in the top 15 to earn All-Region honors. Bolstering the experienced lineup will be freshman Matt Joyner. He comes to UA after winning the Tennessee A-AA state championship on the cross country course last season. The squad will also add a pair of experienced newcomers in transfers Oliver Blake and Gary Bradbury. The pair come to UA with one remain-ing year of eligibility after competing at Loughborough University in England. The Crimson Tide will again face a challenging schedule with a gradual build up to prepare the team for the champion-ship portion of the season. Additionally, the team will compete twice at home this season with its annual Crimson Classic on Oct. 15 and then again on Nov. 12 when the NCAA South Region Championships return to Tuscaloosa. That meet, which UA has won in eight of the last 12 seasons, ultimately helps determine the field for the NCAA Championships. UA will also compete in races at SEC foes Geor-gia and Vanderbilt with a visit to Louisville also thrown in. The SEC Cham-pionships will be contested at Tennessee this season.

The Alabama women’s cross country team will feature a very experienced roster with eight upperclassmen on the 2011 squad. The Crimson Tide’s top six run-ners from last season’s SEC Championships all return after recording a sixth place finish in 2010. UA’s top finisher at the SEC Championships, Kelsey Johnson, returns for her senior season after a junior campaign that was plagued by injury and illness. In her absence, Andrea Torske rose to the challenge and had a breakout junior season and was the Tide’s top finisher in the majority of races. As a healthy sophomore in 2009, Johnson led UA with a 17th place finish at the SEC Championships and earned all-South Region honors for the second straight season. Torske posted a 6-kilometer personal best at the NCAA South Region Cham-pionships in 2010 and was the Tide’s top finisher in 32nd place as the team finished seventh. Her time of 21:00.73 was the fastest by a UA runner on the season and she also owned the team’s top times at the 4 and 5-kilometer distances. Also returning at the top of the lineup is senior Leigh Gilmore and junior Elsbeth Denton. Gilmore served as the Tide’s No. 2 for much of the season and was just behind Torske at NCAA Regionals with a 36th place finish after a 25th place finish at the SEC Championships. Denton returns after running in all six races last season and closing the campaign with a personal best at the 6-kilometer distance at the NCAA Regional meet.

“On the women’s side there’s five or six pretty good athletes,” Waters said. “If we can bring them together and get them to buy into our system I think we can have a pretty exceptional season. I don’t want to make any bold predictions but I think we can have a season we’ll be very happy with and the girls will be very satis-fied with.” Rounding out the returning lineup is junior Katlyn Will. As a sophomore she showed consistent improvement through-out the season and the six races she lined up in. Of those six, she scored in five and was 62nd at the SEC Championships. UA also returns two sophomores that gained valuable experience in 2010. Claire Turner was the only UA freshman to earn a spot in the lineup for the SEC

Championships while Palee Myrex competed in a pair of meets for the Tide. The men’s and women’s schedules mirror each other this season with each open-ing competition on Sept. 3 in Athens, Ga. Visits to Vanderbilt and Louisville are also on the slate along with a pair of home meets. On Oct. 15, UA will host the annual Crimson Classic and on Nov. 12 the top teams in the South will return to Tuscaloosa for the NCAA South Region Championships.

Dan Waters begins his first season as a head coach at the University of Alabama after helping Texas

A&M to unprecedented success.

Dan Waters was named the head men’s and women’s track coach at the University of Alabama on May 11, 2011, after seven successful seasons at Texas A&M. While serving as recruiting coordinator and distance coach for the Aggies under the tutelage of legendary A&M head coach Pat Henry, he was a key contributor to a coaching staff that led the Aggies to unprecedented success on the conference and national scene. The Aggies won six NCAA national champi-onships including back-to-back-to-back men’s and women’s outdoor titles, a feat that had never before been accomplished. The Aggie women won eight consecutive Big 12 titles in the past four years (four indoor, four outdoor) while the A&M men claimed their first Big 12 Indoor title in 2001, the men’s first conference indoor title since a Southwest Conference team title in 1980. Both programs have been ranked No. 1 by USTFCCCA over the past couple of years both indoors and out-doors. One of the nation’s top distance coaches, Waters also served as the recruiting coordinator at Texas A&M and assisted the process of upgrading the program’s talent level to be consistently competitive on the conference and national level. His recruit-ing and coaching efforts have been vital in the men and women each winning three consecutive NCAA Outdoor Championships in 2009, 2010 and 2011, as the program became just the second school to achieve the NCAA Championship double-double since LSU in 1989 and 1990 and the first to have both programs win three in a row. Recent recruiting classes at Texas A&M have earned No. 1 rankings by Track & Field News. In fact, in 2009 both the men and women recruiting classes were chosen the top recruiting classes in the nation by the monthly magazine, becoming just the second school to earn that acclaim in the 15-year history of Track & Field News ranking collegiate classes. The Ag-gie women also enjoyed a three-year run as the No. 1 class, from 2007 to 2009, becoming the first women’s program to achieve the feat. Known for his strong administrative and organizational skills, Waters has overseen the event management at championship events, including the 2009 and 2011 NCAA Indoor Championships, 2009

Big 12 Indoor Championships, and 2003 Southeastern Conference Cross Country Championships. In cross country, Waters earned the Men’s South Central Region Coach of the Year honor in 2008 when Texas A&M won the team title during the region meet and qualified for the NCAA Championships. It was the first time in 18 years that a team defeated powerhouse Arkansas for the region title. Waters has also qualified 16 individuals to the NCAA Cross Country Championships over the past 15 years. The region team title the Aggie men claimed in 2008 was the school’s first since 2003 and just the sixth overall. It also marked the first time that a distance coach on Henry’s staff has qualified a cross country team to the NCAA Championships. Waters came to Texas A&M in August, 2004, after serving a three-year stint overseeing the distance program at the University of Georgia and five years at Texas Christian in a similar capacity. During his stay in Athens, Ga., Waters led the Bulldogs men’s team to the program’s first appear-ance in the NCAA Cross Country Championships, as well as a team victory at the NCAA South Region Championships. At the conference level, the Georgia men placed second for the highest finish in school his-tory, while the women’s team matched its highest finish with a runner-up effort. On the track, Waters’ distance runners broke seven school records. At TCU, Waters helped the Horned Frogs to four Western Athletic Conference team champion-ships - two in indoor track and field, one in outdoor track and field, and one in cross country. The 2000 WAC cross country and indoor track crowns were the first team conference titles in TCU history. During his stay in Fort Worth, the Horned Frogs notched four top-four NCAA finishes and TCU was ranked No. 1 nationally by Trackwire.com in 2001. Among his athletes at TCU was Khadevis Rob-inson, who won the 1998 NCAA 800 meter crown. Robinson is a two-time U.S. Champion that competed in the 800 at the 2004 Olympic Games. Waters began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Texas from 1995-96. Waters is married to the former Jennifer Miller. He received his bachelor’s degree in secondary education from the University of Kansas in 1995. A standout runner for the Jayhawks, Waters was the 1992 Big Eight champion in the 800 meters and ran a leg on KU’s All-America indoor 3,200-meter relay in 1991. Elected the Jayhawks’ team captain in 1993 and 1995, Waters was an Academic All-American in 1995.

Adam Tribble is in his first year on the University of Alabama track and field coaching staff as an assistant coach overseeing the Crimson Tide’s distance runners.

“Adam was a guy that I coached at the University of Georgia and I’ve always recognized his deep passion for the sport and he’s educated himself in the sport as well as anyone,” Waters said. “He has a fantastic relationship with distance runners and knows how to relate to them. He brings a great element of organization and energy to our staff.”

Tribble spent the last two seasons in the same role at Oregon State following stints at Arkansas and his alma mater, Georgia.

“When Coach Waters talked to me about this position he made it sound like an incredible opportunity and I think Alabama is a great situation,” Tribble said. “There is a commitment to track and cross country that is very exciting and a great thing to be a part of. The opportunity to be able to come back into the SEC is something I’ve wanted to do, especially to a program like Alabama.”

During his five seasons at Arkansas he helped coach the Razorbacks’ women’s team to three-straight SEC Cross Country Championships and a pair of runner-up finishes. Arkansas never fell out of the top 20 at the NCAA Championships under his watch and finished as high as fifth in 2006.

While a student at Georgia under Waters’ tutelage, Tribble was a two-year captain of the Bulldog track and field team, earning All-Region honors in cross country. He also finished 46th in the U.S. Olympic Trials in the marathon in 2008.

A 2002 graduate of Georgia with a degree in health and physical education, he also received a graduate degree from Georgia in movement studies.

THE SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE

THE NATION’S TOP TRACK & FIELD CONFERENCE In the ever-changing world of collegiate athletics, the tradition of excellence in the Southeastern Conference has remained constant. The SEC boasts a rich history and has dominated track and field and cross country like no other conference.

2010 SEC Cross Country The SEC sent three total teams to the 2010 NCAA Cross Country Cham-pionships with Arkansas and Alabama representing on the men’s side and Florida qualifying for the women’s championship. Eight student-athletes also qualified as individuals. Arkansas led the SEC men’s representatives by coming in 10th, followed closely by Alabama in 11th. Florida finished 29th in the women’s field. Arkansas also ran away with its 18th SEC men’s cross country championship by narrowly edging Alabama and ending the Tide’s streak of two-consecutive titles. Florida’s women captured their second straight title with three runners finishing in the top eight. Mississippi’s Barnabas Kirui captured the men’s individual title while Georgia’s Kristie Krueger won the women’s race. For the Crimson Tide, Julius Bor earned first team all-SEC honors while Carison Kemei and Joel Rop were named to the second team.

SEC Cross Country History The SEC has been a staple at the NCAA Men’s Cross Country Championships with SEC men’s squads winning eight national championships, two individual titles and 98 All-America honors since 1984. Additionally, 45 teams have finished among the top 25 since 1984 with Alabama accounting for 13 of those finishes. The SEC women lay claim to team cross country championship by Kentucky in 1988 and 18 top 10 finishes. Additionally, the conference has 58 All-Americans since 1981 and 48 teams have finished among the top 25 since 1982.

For decades, the University of Alabama men's and women's cross country teams have utilized several different practice areas, including its competition course, the Harry Pritchett Running Park. Built in 1959, and formerly known as the University Golf Course, it was named the Harry Pritchett Golf Course in 1980 and was known as such until November of 2003 when the course was converted exclusively for cross country use. In addition to playing host to the annual Crimson Classic event, the Harry Pritchett Running Park has hosted the SEC Cross Country Championships as well as the NCAA South Region Championships. The latter will return to the course for the 2011 season. The SEC Championships were last held at Harry Pritchett Running Park in 2000, when the men finished second and the women were fifth. It also hosted in 1972, 1979, 1988 and 2000 (women's SEC competition began in 1983). The Alabama men were second in 1972, fifth in 1979 and fourth in 1988, while the Crimson Tide women finished second in 1988. The Harry Pritchett Running Park last hosted the region championships in 2009. It also hosted in 2001 and 2004 and is slated to host again in 2011. The Alabama men won the regional title in 2001 and 2009, but finished eighth in 2004. The Alabama women finished 16th in 2001, 15th in 2004 and seventh in 2009. The running park is able to accommodate course lengths of 5,000 meters, 8,000 meters, 6,000 meters and 10,000 meters. The course, once used as the university's golf course, is a flat to rolling, all grass surface with limited cart path crossing.

While the team’s high-mileage training serves as the founda-tion of the program, its work off the course is the structure. Whether it be circuit training or stretching, the team’s ulti-mate goal is to be as physi-cally fit as possible to attack each race and avoid injury to an athlete.
