Head Coach Rob Clayton

2011-12 Air Force Men’s Swimming & Diving 2 GoAirForceFalcons.com

Head coach Rob

Clayton enters

his 14th season as the Academy's head men's

swimming coach. After 13 years, his enthusi-

asm for the Academy and Falcon swimming

hasn't diminished a bit. "I love coaching at the

Air Force Academy. It is the perfect school for

the young man who is serious about pursuing

excellence in school, swimming and life. I'm

thrilled to wake up and go to work in the morn-

ing," said Clayton.

Clayton has led the Falcons to a 113-62-1

overall dual record and eight top-three finishes

in the MWC. After a sixth-place league finish his

first season, Clayton led the Falcons to third-

place finishes in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2006 and

2007. In 2003, 2004 and, most recently, 2009,

the Falcons finished second at the MWC Cham-

pionships. In addition, Clayton was named

MWC Men’s Coach of the Year in 2007 and

2010.

At USAFA, Clayton has coached men to 20

individual conference championships and two

relay conference championships. Eight of his

swimmers have competed in the Olympic Tri-

als, including in 2008 when five former and cur-

rent Falcons participated in the Trials. In

addition to the team's success in the pool, Clay-

ton’s swimmers have earned more than 132 ac-

ademic all-conference honors and 22 MWC

Scholar-Athlete selections, while six others

were both designated Scholar All-Americans by

the College Swimming Coaches Association of

America. Clearly, Clayton expects excellence in

the classroom as well as the pool.

"The Academy is the number one under-

graduate school in the country," the coach said.

"The men come here primarily to get the best

education possible and to prepare for a fabu-

lous career in the Air Force and beyond. While

we desire success in the pool, we insist on suc-

cess in the classroom." Not surprisingly, the Fal-

con swimmers and divers were the recipients

of the Academy's Team Excellence Award for

the 2003-04 school year.

Clayton is a 1991 graduate of Wyoming

where he earned a bachelor's degree in chem-

ical engineering. While at Wyoming, Clayton

was one of the premier swimmers in the West-

ern Athletic Conference.

A four-year letterman, Clayton swam in

the NCAA Championships in the 200 freestyle,

200 IM and 400 IM. He stole the show at the

1991 conference championships, winning the

200 and 400 individual medley, becoming only

the second Cowboy to ever win an IM confer-

ence title. His time in the 400 IM set a confer-

ence championship record.

Clayton excelled outside the pool as well.

His 3.75 grade point average in chemical engi-

neering helped earn him Academic All-Ameri-

can honors. He received the WAC's Stan Bates

Award in 1991, as the league's most outstand-

ing student-athlete. The Bates Award is the

most prestigious award an athlete in the con-

ference can win.

Following college, Clayton served as an

age group coach for the Fort Collins Area Swim

Team (FAST).

In the fall of 1991, he began a six-year stint

as the men's assistant coach at Brigham Young

University. While at BYU, Clayton was instru-

mental in building one of the most successful

swimming programs in the region. The Cougars

won the 1996 WAC title, their first since 1979.

During Clayton's tenure in Provo, BYU never fin-

ished below third at the WAC Championships.

champions and several WAC champion relay

teams at BYU. Additionally, he coached an

NCAA finalist and an athlete to a spot on the

U.S. National team in the summer of 1997. He

was very active in USA Swimming during his

time in Utah, serving as a senior coach with Hill-

top Aquatic Swim Team in American Fork, Utah.

Clayton came to the Academy in 1997 and

made an immediate impact on the program. He

worked with women's coach Casey Converse to

coach the Academy's first woman to qualify for

the NCAA Division I Championships. Clayton

then took over the reins of the men's program

for the 1998-99 season.

In addition to his coaching duties, Clayton

also instructs cadets in swimming and water

survival classes. He was recognized for his

teaching accomplishments by being named the

2003-04 Department of Athletics Civilian In-

structor of the Year and was recently named

the Aquatics Instructor of the Semester. Clay-

ton comments on his teaching duties, "I enjoy

teaching aquatics classes. It provides me with

opportunity to interact with the rest of the

cadets at the Air Force Academy."

Originally from Fort Collins, Colo., Clayton

was a standout swimmer at Rocky Mountain

High School where he was a four-year letter-

man. The 41-year-old Clayton is married to the

former Kelly Costigan, a 1992 graduate of the

Academy who competed for the women's ten-

nis team. They have three sons, Robert, Daniel

and Joshua, and two daughters, Noel and Anna.

The Claytons are very active in their church, In-

ternational Anglican Church, and live in Monu-

ment.

FAQ

2011-12 Air Force Men’s Swimming & Diving 6 GoAirForceFalcons.com

WHAT IS YOUR TRAINING PHILOSOPHY AT AIR FORCE?We are a military academy, so there is a balance between academics, athletics and military. However, we are a Division I program and trainaccordingly. We compete in the Mountain Pacific Sports Conference(BYU, Cal State Bakersfield, Hawai’i, North Dakota, Pacific, Seattle,UNLV, Wyoming) and continually strive to qualify guys for the NCAAChampionships.

HOW MANY DIFFERENT COACHES AND TRAINERS DO YOURSWIMMERS WORK WITH?I have been at the Academy for 13 years and assistant coach AnthonyBoettcher enters his first year. We also have a strength and condi-tioning coach and a full-time athletic trainer assigned to our team. Inaddition, the women’s team has a head coach and an assistant coachbut we generally train as men’s teams and women’s teams.

WHAT IS THE TEAM ATMOSPHERE LIKE? (i.e. Does the team dorandom activities outside of swimming just to hang out with eachother? Do swimmers room with other swimmers? etc.)The team atmosphere is a complete cohesive unit. The team goes tofootball games as a team, camping trips as a team and many other ac-tivities. Because of the challenges that are involved with a militaryacademy, the team forms a very tight bond. The pool is the placewhere they come together, work hard and achieve goals together. Inregards to the question about rooming together, each student is putinto a squadron (roughly 100 students per squadron, 40 squadrons, total student body of approximately 4000) randomly, so most of theswimmers do not room with other swimmers. Last year, we had twofreshmen room together.

WHAT IS AN AVERAGE WEEK OF TRAINING LIKE IN TERMS OFPRACTICE TIME, YARDAGE, DRYLAND, ETC.?We train every other morning (lift and swim) and every afternoon forroughly 2.5 hours (to include dryland). The distance varies by workoutbut usually it is about 6000 yards for our middle distance group. How-ever, when we do power days, we swim much less. Our weight roomtraining is designed especially for swimmers by our strength and con-ditioning coach. Additionally, we TIVO normally every other day be-fore practice for about 30 minutes and concentrate onstarts/turns/strokes. As far as our regimen is concerned, during ouroff-season, we generally train as one team but our distance guys fre-quently receive additional training. Then during the season, we havedifferent groups (distance, middle distance, strokes, sprinters, IM) thatwill have individualized workouts. WHAT IS THE COMMITMENT OF THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT

IN TERMS OF FUNDING FOR TRAVEL, EQUIPMENT, ETC.?We have unsurpassed support from our athletic department. We nor-mally travel 16-20 guys on our trips and everything is paid for. We alsotake a winter training trip (San Diego, Fort Lauderdale, Hawaii, Tuc-son) every year and everything is paid for there as well. There is nocost put on the swimmers and there is NO fundraising. Additionally, weare sponsored by Nike, so every swimmer receives a good supply of AirForce Swimming gear every year. We swim in Nike suits during theseason and then compete in Speedo for the Championship meets.

WHAT IS YOUR TEAM'S AVERAGE GPA?Our team’s average GPA this year was 3.0 and usually hovers rightaround there.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO TELL MEABOUT YOUR PROGRAM THAT I HAVE FAILED TO ASK ABOUTABOVE?I just wanted to explain the Academy and how things work. No one

here is on an “athletic scholarship.” Everyone receives an appointmentand everything is paid for while you are here (room, board, meals, etc).In fact, the students receive a monthly stipend in addition that startsat about $120/month as a freshman and goes up to about $800/monthas a senior. All students are undergraduate students. There are 32 dif-ferent majors that range in many possibilities. The big difference isthat when you graduate, you are commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant inthe Air Force. About half (about 500) of the graduates will go off topilot training. The other half will go off to various other jobs to includeadditional schooling. Think of an Air Force base as a little communityand all the jobs that are required. The Air Force requires doctors, civilengineers, meteorologists, police officers, etc. If you decide not to fly,the service commitment is five years; for flyers, the commitment is 10years. You can think of that in one of two ways—as a service commit-ment, or as a guaranteed job that pays you a competitive salary and in-cludes unsurpassed benefits.

2011-12 Season Outlook

2011-12 Air Force Men’s Swimming & Diving 7 GoAirForceFalcons.com

New beginnings are all around for the Air Forcemen’s swimming & diving team as it enters the 2011-12 season. The Falcons begin compeon in a newconference, while swimming in their newly refur-bished pool. In addion, AFA will be looking to moveforward aer graduang one of its strongest seniorclasses ever last season.

Despite all the changes in and around the pro-gram, head swim coach Rob Clayton remains quite op-misc about his team as he enters his 14th season atthe helm.

The Falcons depart the Mountain West Confer-ence and join the Mountain Pacific Sports Federaon(MPSF) for the 2011-12 season. The MPSF featuresnine schools parcipang in men’s swimming & div-ing, including former MWC rivals BYU, UNLV andWyoming.

“The MPSF is going to be a tough swimming con-ference,” Clayton said. “We’re taking all the top swimprograms from the Mountain West and adding themwith some other already strong programs, so it’s goingto be a very compeve league at the championship.”

One of Air Force’s biggest addions this seasonis the renovaon of the Cadet Natatorium. Aer hav-ing to train in mulple venues last year--including thewater polo pool and the USAFA community centerpool--the Falcons return to a refurbished state-of-the-art Cadet Natatorium. The new natatorium featuresan Olympic sized pool with the ability to convert fromlong-course to short-course distances. In addion, the pool can convert from yards to meters. The div-ing wells have also been re-done, with all new 1m, 3mand plaorm wells.

“Having the ability to switch from long-courseto short-course is going to allow us to train morespecifically and be much beer prepared for the typeof pool we will be swimming in for compeon,” Clay-ton said. “The new video board and new diving facil-ity puts the Cadet Natatorium in a short list of eliteswimming facilies in the country.”

Air Force returns 18 leerwinners from the2010-11 squad and welcome 11 freshmen. The Fal-cons lose six seniors off the 2010-11 team, includingMW Senior Recognion Award winner BenjaminGunn and MW Scholar Athlete of the Year Eric Robin-son. Gunn was a three-me MW Champion andleaves the Academy holding five school individual andthree relay records.

“We graduated some great swimmers from lastyear,” Clayton said. “Obviously, we have our work cutout for us this year, in terms of finding guys to step

up. We have several returners I feel are ready to stepinto bigger roles. We also have a very talented fresh-man group that will come in here and contribute rightoff the bat.”

Air Force will be led by its four seniors, high-lighted by Cody Deacon and Corydon Butler. Deaconis coming off a stellar Mountain West Championships, where he was a finalist in both breaststroke events. In addion, Deacon is an Olympic Trials qualifier in the100 breast. Butler earned All-MW honors last year inthe 200, 500 and 1650 free events. Butler was theMountain West runner-up in the 500 free and was atop-five finisher in his three distance free events.

“Cody and Corydon are coming off excellent jun-ior seasons for us,” Clayton said. “Cody is our teamcaptain this year and we look for him to lead our teamin both breaststroke events. Corydon was one of thetop swimmers in the distance free events last yearand we expect him to do well in all three of thoseevents this year.”

Nate Roesler has been a constant contributor inthe fly events and Cole Smith will look to have strongswims in the sprint-free events.

“Both Nate and Cole have scored points for usat the conference championships and we expect themto be great leaders for our team as seniors,” Claytonsaid.

The 1960s were an exciting decade for the Fal-cons as Air Force swimmers qualified for the NCAAChampionships eight out of 10 years. Capt. Paul Cle-land was head coach for three years, achieving a 25-10 record. Capt. Bob Nugent took over in 1963 andwent 23-19 in a three-year stint. Backstroker BarryBeilinski became the swimming program's first All-American in 1963.

In 1966, the NCAA brought the Division I cham-pionships to the Academy. Swimming World Maga-zine complimented the meet organization: "TheAcademy, nestled in an 18,000 acre site at the foot ofthe Rocky Mountains, matched its architecturalgrandeur with outstanding organizational efficiencyto make the championships one of the greatest everheld."

Nugent and Colonel E.A. Rafalko, the Falcons'athletic director and meet director, were commendedfor their contributions, especially for securing elec-tronic timing. Later, this proved that the equipmentshould be mandatory for all important meets. The"7,000 plus feet above sea level" conditions createdcomment and controversy as coaches predicted andevaluated their swimmers' performance at the highaltitude.

That year, breaststroker Steven Seigler was theswimming team's second All-American. He repeatedin 1967, the year Maj. Paul Arata began his tenure ashead coach. The final year of the 1960s was one ofthe highlight years of the decade as the Falcons were19-0 in dual meets. One of the most exciting dualmeets came against Colorado State. The meet camedown to the last relay. If the Falcons won, they wouldwin the meet by a point. The packed stands cheeredBob Nieman, Warren Flaherty, D.K. Martin and BryanRye to a victory and an NCAA qualifying time of3:12.02 (fastest in the country up to that point) , fourseconds ahead of the Rams. The Air Force team tooknine to the NCAAs that year and the same relay teamplaced 10th, good for All-American status.

Rye, a transfer from Colorado State, would godown in Falcon history after that year. In the meetversus the Rams, he won the 50 and 100 free and an-chored the 400 free relay team with a 45.6 split, oneof the fastest splits in the country. Rye also beat CSU's

All-American sprinter, Dennis O'Connor, three timesthat day. After graduation, Rye flew helicopters andserved in Vietnam where he was awarded the Meri-torious Service Medal for a successful rescue mission.Rye was killed in action in 1975 and posthumouslypromoted to the rank of Captain. The Most ValuableSwimmer Award is named in his honor and given eachyear at the Annual Individual Awards Banquet.

In 1970, Nieman was an All-American in twoevents as he won the consolation heat in both the 100and 200 freestyle at the NCAAs. A few years later, Nie-man would become the Academy's first Olympian ashe competed in the 1976 Games in modern pen-tathlon. He would qualify for the team again in 1980.

The men entered the Western Athletic Confer-ence (WAC) in 1981 and a period of adjustment fol-lowed. The men had the depth to win dual meets asthey were 4-0 in WAC contests that first year but hada tough time at the WAC Championships. In 1981,John Sayre was the program's first WAC champion(200 IM) as he also qualified for the NCAAs. MikeBrown qualified for the Olympic trials in the 200meter butterfly, after placing ninth (2:03.71) at theNCAAs in 1984.

Arata, after 16 years at the helm, retired afterthe 1983 season. His record was 188-10 for the menand 113-5-1 for the women, a combined total of 301-15-1, an unreal winning percentage of 95 percent. Themen also had an undefeated home victory streak of108, covering 16 years beginning in 1967. DuringArata's reign, there were six All-Americans in eightevents and one national champion on the men'steam. On the women's side there were six nationalchampions in 12 events with 27 different womenachieving All-America honors in 112 different events.

Maj. Kelly Kemp was the next head coach andremained in that position until 1987. Maj. Jim Hogue took over in 1988, while Lt. Col. MikkiKing returned to coach the diving team. The next fewyears were diving dominant, as Hogue was Division IIcoach of the year in both 1987 and 1988. In the fall of1988, Keith "Casey" Converse began his first year ashead coach.

In 1990, the Falcons beat WAC rivals BYU andUtah in home dual meets. That same year, DrewWhitting became the team's second WAC championby winning the 500 and 1,650 free and qualifying forthe NCAAs. The 1991 WAC Championships saw theFalcons ascend to a second-place finish behind Utah, their highest WAC finish ever. The team garnered fourWAC individual titles, Whitting again in the 500 and1650 free, Bucky MacLaughlin in the 50 free and TonyBamsey in the 100 breaststroke. The team also won

its first-ever relay championship(200 free relay comprised of Bam-sey, MacLaughlin, Sheesley andSquires). For this remarkable finish,Converse was named WAC Coachof the Year. Whitting also becamethe first All-American (HM) on themen's team since 1975 as he placed13th in both the 500 and the 1650free at the NCAA Division I Champi-onships.

The men continued to farewell, going 7-2 in dual meets in1992 with Bamsey winning anotherWAC title (50 free). Joining him inthe winner's circle was Sam Chest-nut (1650 free) as the Falconsplaced fifth at the WAC Champi-onships. The following year broughtan end to one great swimmer's ca-

reer but the beginning of another's. Whitting won histhird WAC title by winning a title in the 500 meterfree. His time of 4:20.09 is still the WAC record. Fresh-man Matt Davis also won a WAC championship in the400 IM as the men went 6-3 in dual meets.

Davis continued his excellence, as the Falcons'only WAC champion in 1994, repeating in the 400 IM.Jon Kalberer (distance freestyle) joined Davis on theAll-WAC team. Davis won a total of three WAC cham-pionships during his career (400 IM in 1993 and 1994and 200 fly in 1995).

The 1998-99 season saw Rob Clayton take overas head coach. He replaced Converse, who movedover to coach the women's program full-time. Theteam continued to climb up the ranks in the confer-ence standings. After finishing 11-2 in dual meets, theteam improved to a fifth-place finish at the WACChampionships. With 11 dual wins, Air Force reachedthe double-figure mark in victories for the secondconsecutive year and only the second time since1986. The effort at the WAC Championships was oneof the best ever for the Falcons, with seven recordsbeing established, three of them in individual eventsand four in relay events.

In the fall of 1999, the Academy joined theMountain West Conference as a founding institution.Charlie Toth became the Academy's first MWC cham-pion in any sport when he won the 100 freestyle atthe 2000 MWC Championships. Matt Ihlenfeld addedan individual title in the 200 breast, as the teammoved up again in the conference standings to finishthird.

The highlight of the 2001 MWC Championshipswas the team's victory in the 200 medley relay. PaulBrehm, John Dayton, Nate Amidon and Toth broughthome the title in record-setting time to claim theAcademy's first relay championship in 10 years. Ih-lenfeld swept the breaststroke events, establishingnew MWC records of 54.70 and 1:58.67. The Falconsalso sent two swimmers to the NCAA Championships(Toth and Ihlenfeld) for the first time since 1995.

At the 2002 MWC Championships, the Falconswon the 400 medley relay (Brehm, Dayton, EricPounds, Amidon) and Brehm won both the 100 and200 backstroke. For the third consecutive year, theFalcons finished third at the MWC Championships.

After a 12-2 season (3-1 in MWC) in 2002-03, theFalcons finished as conference runners-up at 2003MWC Championships. It marked just the second timein Academy history that the program had finished thishigh. Brehm again led the effort, as he successfullydefended his championship in the 200 backstroke.

At the 2004 Championships, the Falcons re-peated as runners-up. This came on the heels of fin-ishing the regular season with an 8-4 record in dualmeets. Freshman Chris Knaute capped off a stellarrookie campaign by winning the 1650 free with a timeof 15:28.21, then an MWC record and second-fastestmark in school history.

As a sophomore, Knaute dominated the 2005MWC Championships, winning the 500 and 1650 freeand 400 IM. His accomplishments led to his beingnamed MWC Swimmer of the Year. He became thefirst in the history of the program to receive Confer-ence Swimmer of the Year Honors. Joining him on theAll-MWC team were sophomore Justin Lapin and sen-ior Evan Parr.

In 2006, the Falcons took third place at the MWCChampionships, setting four school records in theprocess. Knaute defended his titles in the 500 and1650 free and 400 IM, while Paul Parmenter won the200 IM and Brady Lindberg won the platform divingevent. Stan Curnow was named co-diving coach of the

year. Knaute also participated in the NCAAs, earninghonorable mention All-America honors in the 400 IMand 500 free.

Once again, the Falcons finished third in theMWC in 2007. Knaute was named the MWC Men’sSwimmer of the Year for the second time, winningtwo more conference titles in the 400 IM and 500free. Parmenter and Lindberg defended their titles inthe 200 IM and platform dive, respectively, while RobClayton was honored as the men’s swimming coachof the year. In addition, the 800 free relay team ofBryan Avery, T.J. Cowling, Parmenter and Knaute seta new school record, shattering the previous mark bythree seconds. Knaute went on to compete at theNCAA Championships for a second year. Knaute andParmenter also competed at the U.S. Open, both qual-ifying for the Olympic Trials.

The Falcons, who lost conference championsKnaute, Lindberg and Parmenter, were forced to re-build in 2008, but still finished fourth at the confer-ence championships. Sophomore Kyle VanValkenburg was the MWC champion in the platformdive, giving the Falcons the title in the event for thethird-straight season. In addition, Avery set a new

school record in the 100 fly, while he, fellow juniorJustin Day and freshman Benjamin Gunn all earnedqualifying marks for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials.

Air Force managed to put together one of itsbest-ever MWC Championship finishes in 2009, plac-ing second behind UNLV. The Falcons claimed two in-dividual titles, with Gunn winning the 200 IM inschool-record fashion and Van Valkenburg defendinghis championship in the platform. In addition, a totalof eight school records (four individual, four relay)were set during the conference meet. Gunn led theway by turning in Academy-best marks in the 200 IM,100 fly and 200 fly, while Day set the new standard inthe 100 breast. The Falcons also set new schoolrecords in the 400 and 800 freestyle relays and the200 and 400 medley relays.

In 2010, the Falcons followed up the stellar 2009season with another second place finish at the MWCChampionships. Gunn won his second 200 IM title, setting a new conference and school record. Gunnalso set a school record in the 100 back. Nine indi-viduals earned all-conference honors across 21events. In addition, Clayton was named MWC Coachof the Year for the third time in his career.

In 2011, Air Force graduated a stellar seniorclass, led by Gunn. Gunn was the 200 fly champion atthe MW Championships, in addition to setting schoolrecords in the 100 fly and 100 and 200 back events.Gunn also earned the MW Senior Recognition award. In addition to Gunn, Corydon Butler and Paul Leon-hardt earned all-MW honors. The 800 free relaygroup of Gunn, Leonhardt, Tim Martinelli and Butleralso earned all-MW honors. In addition, senior EricRobinson was named MW Scholar Athlete of the Year, becoming the third Falcon men’s swimmer to earn thehonor.

As with the Falcons’ swimming program, the AirForce diving team has also enjoyed enormous successover its history.

Air Force has had a total of 16 first-team All-Americans and three national champions (Division Iand Division II) in just over four decades of competi-tion.

The first great diver in Academy history was DonMcLean. A 1966 graduate, McLean was an All-Ameri-can in 1965 and placed ninth in the nation on one-meter and 12th on three-meter. He was the firstFalcon diver to qualify for the NCAAs and earn All-America status.

In the 1970s, the diving coach position was filledby Olympic diving coach Dick Smith, who began layinga solid foundation that would benefit future Air Forcedivers. He was replaced in 1973 by Capt. Micki King, aspringboard diving gold medalist in the 1972 OlympicGames. Included in this era is Rick McAlister, one ofthe best athletes to ever attend the Academy.Coached by both Smith and King, McAlister is themost successful diver in Academy history. In 1974, hewas the three-meter NCAA national champion andplaced fourth on one-meter, single-handedly scoring27 points as the Falcons placed 13th in the nation. Afour-time All-American, he won five national inde-pendent titles and took three second-place finisheson the one-meter board at the National AAUs.

In 1976, Chuck Kennedy replaced King as thecoach and a new era began as women entered theAcademy. Janet Peterson, class of 1981, was theAcademy’s first female All-American in diving. Shewon the award eight times, twice each year on bothboards, at the AIAW Division II National Champi-onships. Shawn Whitson, an ‘82 graduate and an-other outstanding diver, was a seven-timeAll-American. In 1982, Linda Telkamp became the firstfemale diver to claim a national title, winning thethree-meter competition. Telkamp was also an eight-time All-American as the 1980s produced several div-ing legends including Nancy Burdick (‘83), a five-timeAll-American. In 1983, Micki King returned to coachfour more All-Americans. They were Tina Landschultz(five times), Dana Strong (three times), Pam Klein(one time) and Mary Rainaldi (one time).

In 1990, King was replaced by Capt. Brian Shimel

and both had a hand in coaching the strongest duo ofwoman divers in the history of the Academy, KimDornburg and Dawn Dishner. Dornburg, a six-time All-American, was national champion on one-meter andthree-meter in 1988 and again won the one-metertitle in 1991. Dishner, a seven-time All-American, wasthe three-meter national champion in 1989. Dorn-burg won the Academy’s Most Valuable Swim-mer/Diver award three times, while Dishner won ittwice. Only one other women’s swimmer or diver(Patty Martinez) has ever won the award more thantwice. In addition to the success of the women divers, the men also fielded strong competitors. Jeff Faleyqualified for the NCAAs in 1987 on both boards.

In 1991, another great Academy diver, BoBloomer, became Air Force’s first WAC championdiver by winning the three-meter competition.

In 1992, Stan Curnow took over the diving reins. In his tenure at the Academy, he has produced sev-eral female All-Americans. In his first year, SarahSaxer, class of 1993, earned All-American honors onboth boards while Rebecca Currie was an All-Ameri-can in the three-meter. The two repeated as All-Americans in 1993. With Saxer gone, Casey Cornishearned honorable mention on both boards in 1994while Currie finished out her career with her first top-eight finish in one-meter. In 1995, three womenearned honorable mention All-American honors andhelped the Falcons to the Division II national champi-onship. They were Lauren Eckert, Cornish and DawnMcCown. Cornish, finishing out a brilliant career, wasthe only Falcon to score on both boards at the 1996NCAAs, a year that brought another national champi-onship to Air Force.

Sophomore Elly Bunzendahl became the pro-gram’s first first-team All-American since Currie in1993 when she earned the honor by placing seventhin the three-meter.

As the Academy’s diving program forges ahead inthe new millenium, a commitment to improve on boththe men’s and women’s side has been evident. In theirfinal season competing in the WAC, the divers con-tributed to Air Force's fifth-place finish. Doug Hulseadded a top-eight finish on the platform while JimMarion placed in the one-meter.

After their strong showing at the WAC, the

divers went on to record impressive performances atthe NCAA Zone E Championships. Marion and Hulseeach placed in two events while Dave Devemarkplaced in the platform competition.

In 2002, Sarah Law won the one- and three-meter diving titles at the 2002 Mountain West Con-ference Swimming and Diving Championships. Law,who was also named the Diver of the Year, is a repeatwinner in the one-meter. The four-time conferencediving champion was also awarded with the confer-ence’s senior recognition award for excellence in andout of the pool. Jessica Williams won the 2002 MWCplatform title. She also holds the conference recordon platform (384.55).

In 2004, Ben Chapman earned a trip to theNCAA Zone E Diving Regionals with his win in thethree-meter dive at the AFA Diving Invitational.

The 2005-06 season was a solid year for Falcondiving, as junior Brady Lindberg was the conferencechampion in the men’s platform diving. SophomoreDanielle Dowds was the lone first-team all-conferenceselection on the women’s team, earning the honors inthe platform diving and coach Stan Curnow wasnamed co-diving coach of the year. Lindberg then de-fended his conference title in the platform dive in2007, winning the event for a second time, whilefreshman David Arlington garned All-MWC honors atthree-meters.

Despite the graduation of Lindberg, the strengthof the diving program remained evident in 2008, asKyle Van Valkenburg was the lone conference cham-pion for the Falcons, winning the men’s platform dive. The sophomore’s title marked the third straight yearthat an Air Force diver had won the event. Mean-while, Dowds earned All-MWC honors once again inthe platform dive.

In 2009, the Falcons’ success on the platformcontinued, with Van Valkenburg defending his title, while junior Chelsea Tompkins earned all-conferencehonors on the women’s platform. In addition, VanValkenburg posted all-conference honors on thethree-meter springboard, while Arlington added anall-conference performance on the one-meter board.

WORLD CLASS ATHLETE PROGRAM (WCAP)

The Air Force World Class Athlete Program (WCAP) is a two-year program that provides active duty, national guard andreserve Air Force personnel the opportunity to train and com-pete at national and international sports competitions withthe ultimate goal of selection to the United States Olympic

team. The WCAP is not adevelopmental program;it targets athletes whohave achieved world classstatus in their sport. If se-lected, the athlete will beassigned to HeadquartersAir Force Services Agency,San Antonio, Texas, witha duty location near elitecoaches and/or worldclass training facilities.Candidates must remain competitive for a U.S Olympicteam position to remain in the program, which endswith the Olympic Trials or after competing with the na-tional team at the Olympics.

James Bales, a 2001 graduate, is currentlytraining in Colorado Springs under the WCAP in an at-tempt to qualify for the 2012 Olympics in the triathlon.

Former Air Force swimmers that have servedas members of the WCAP in 2008 include Capt. Eli Bre-

mer, 2nd Lt. Chris Knaute and 2nd Lt.Paul Parmenter. Bremer, a 2000graduate of the Academy, competedin the 2008 Beijing Olympics in themodern pentathlon. Meanwhile,Knaute and Parmenter, both 2007graduates, participated in the U.S.Olympic Trials in swimming in 2008.

Both spent a year in Charlotte, N.C., training at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center, men-tored by former Auburn head coach Dave Marsh.

The Air Force Academy

2011-12 Air Force Men’s Swimming & Diving 37 GoAirForceFalcons.com

The United States Air Force Academy offers a four-year pro-gram of instruction and experience designed to educate, train and inspire men and women to become officers ofcharacter, motivated to lead the United States Air Force inservice to our nation. Each cadet graduates with a bachelorof science degree and a commission as a second lieutenantin the Air Force.

COURSE OF STUDYCadets are exposed to a balanced curriculum that pro-

vides the knowledge, skills and responsibilities essential toa career Air Force officer. The entire USAFA experience isintegrated and mapped to achieve a set of desired out-comes in every graduate.

The core academic curriculum includes courses in basicsciences, engineering, social sciences and humanities.Cadets take additional elective courses to complete re-quirements for one of 32 major areas of study. About 50 percent of the cadetscomplete majors in science and engineering; the remainder graduate in the socialsciences and humanities. Some of the most popular majors include management, aeronautical engineering, foreign area studies, history, behavioral science, civilengineering, astronautical engineering, electrical engineering and engineering me-chanics.

FACULTY COMPOSITIONThe majority of the Academy's faculty members, more than 500 total, are Air

Force officers. They are selected primarily from career-officer volunteers who haveestablished outstanding records of performance and dedication. Each has at leasta master's degree and more than 55 percent have doctorates or other terminal de-grees in their field of study.

About 30 percent of the faculty are civilians who bring great depth of discipli-nary and educational expertise and provide academic stability and continuity.

Faculty members are intensely focused on cadet learning as an integral part oftheir officer development. The Air Force Academy has been ranked No. 1 in thenation for the most accessible and involved faculty for four years in a row.

To provide greater contributions by a diverse faculty, the Academy has severaldistinguished visiting professors and endowed professors who serve one or moreyears. Officers from other services, as well as officers from allied countries are alsomembers of the faculty. Distinguished civilian and military lecturers also sharetheir expertise with the cadets during the academic year.

ATHLETIC PROGRAMThe Academy's athletic program is designed to improve physical fitness, teach

athletic skills and develop leadership qualities. To achieve its goals, the Academyoffers some of the most extensive physical education, intramural sports and in-tercollegiate athletic programs in the nation. Cadets take at least three differentphysical education courses each year.

MILITARY EDUCATION AND TRAININGAn air, space and cyberspace-oriented military education, training and leadership program begins with basic cadettraining and continues throughout the four years. Seniorsare responsible for the organizational leadership of thecadet wing, while juniors and sophomores seek to developteam and interpersonal leadership and instructional skills.Cadets are projected into as many active leadership rolesas possible to prepare them to be effective Air Force offi-cers.Fundamental concepts of military organization -- drill, ethics, honor, Air Force heritage and physical training -- areemphasized the first summer during basic cadet training.Freshmen then study the military role in United States so-ciety as well as the mission and organization of the AirForce. Sophomores receive instruction in communicationskills and juniors study the combat and operational aspects

of the Air Force. The Academy offers courses in flying, navigation, soaring and parachuting,

building from basic skills to instructor duties. Some cadets may fly light aircraftwith the Cadet Flying Team.

Summer training for cadets is divided into three, three-week training periods. There are a variety of programs available and each cadet is required to completetwo training periods each summer with leave during the other period. All newcadets take six weeks of basic cadet training in their first summer.

Combat survival training is a required three-week program during cadets' sec-ond summer. For other second-summer training periods, cadets have options suchas working with Airmen in an operational unit at an Air Force installation, airborneparachute training, soaring or basic free-fall parachute training.

During their last two summers, all cadets are offered leadership training as su-pervisors or instructors in the summer programs listed above.

Extracurricular activities also are an integral part of the education program. The cadet ski club, drum and bugle corps, cadet chorale and forensics are a few ofthe programs available.

NOMINATIONSNominations to the Academy may be obtained through a congressional spon-

sor or by meeting eligibility criteria in other categories of competition establishedby law. For information on admission procedures, write to HQ USAFA/RRS; 2304Cadet Drive, Suite 200; USAF Academy, CO 80840-5025 or go to www.usafa.edu.

HISTORY OF THE ACADEMY

In 1948, a board of leading civilian and military educators was appointed to plan the curriculum for an academy that would meet the needsof the newly established Air Force. The board determined that Air Force requirements could not be met by expanding the other service acade-mies and recommended an Air Force Academy be established without delay.

In 1949, then Secretary of the Air Force W. Stuart Symington appointed a commission to assist in selecting a site and on April 1, 1954, Pres-ident Dwight D. Eisenhower authorized creation of the United States Air Force Academy. After considering 580 sites in 45 states, the commis-sion narrowed the choice to three locations. The summer of 1954, Secretary of the Air Force Harold Talbott selected a site near Colorado Springs,Colo. Colorado contributed $1 million toward purchase of the property.

In July 1955, the first Academy class entered interim facilities at Lowry Air Force Base, Denver, while construction began. It was sufficientlycompleted for occupancy by the cadet wing in late August 1958. Initial construction cost was $142 million.

Women entered the Academy on June 28, 1976, as members of the class of 1980.

Director of Athletics

2011-12 Air Force Men’s Swimming & Diving 39 GoAirForceFalcons.com

Dr. Hans J.Mueh is in hiseighth year asthe director ofathletics at theAir Force Acad-emy. A retiredAir Force

brigadier general, Mueh was vice dean of facultyfor two years prior to his retirement from activeduty in the summer of 2004. Mueh was heavilyinvolved in Academy athletics before becomingdirector of athletics. He was the Academy's fac-ulty athletics representative from 1996-2004 andwas a long-time member of the board of direc-tors for the Air Force Academy Athletics Associa-tion.

Since becoming the director of athletics,Mueh has led the Academy to some remarkablefeats. In 2007, the Academy was one of onlythree schools (Michigan State and Boston Col-lege) to reach post-season play in football (2007),men’s basketball and ice hockey (2006-07). Itmarked the first time a service academy has everhad a team compete in the post-season in allthree sports.

In addition, under Mueh’s watch the men’sbasketball team has played in another NCAAtournament and the National Invitational Tour-nament’s Final Four. The ice hockey team haswon the conference championship and advancedto the NCAA tournament four of the last fiveyears. Mueh was on the selection committee thathired current head coach Frank Serratore and ledthe Academy’s move into the Athletic Hockey As-sociation.

The football program, the Academy’s flagshipsport, has gone through a major overhaul underMueh. He led the transition from the retirementof the legendary Fisher DeBerry after 23 years atthe helm to hiring current head coach Troy Cal-houn, a 1989 Academy graduate. Calhoun’s im-pact was immediate, leading the Falcons to a 9-4overall mark and a second-place finish in theMountain West Conference in 2007. The Falconsqualified for their first bowl game in five years, playing in the Armed Forces Bowl in 2007. Theprogram then posted back-to-back eight-win sea-sons and was 9-4 last year while qualifying forbowl games every year. The school has averaged9,000 bowl tickets sold during the four-year run.

Mueh has been just as successful behind thescenes with the administration of the depart-ment. Mueh restructured the department withan internal/external model that has streamlinedresources and made the department more effec-tive from top to bottom. In addition, he has thedepartment on course to become a federallychartered non-profit organization which will leadto more fund-raising opportunities.

Mueh was instrumental in the USAFA Endow-

ment and the announcement of the Holaday Ath-letic Center, an indoor training facility. The $15million facility was completed in July 2011.

Mueh has also been active within the confer-ence and the NCAA. He was recently selected tobe part of the NCAA Division I Amateurism Cabi-net and has been active on the NCAA’s academ-ics/eligibility compliance cabinet, the men’s golfcommittee and the region 7 postgraduate schol-arship committee. Mueh has been equally activewithin the conference on various leadership com-mittees. He is currently on the awards and recog-nition committee and has previously served onthe joint council executive committee, and com-mittees on championships, television and sports-manship.

Before assuming his duties as vice dean at theAcademy, Mueh was permanent professor andhead of the department of chemistry at the Acad-emy, a position he held since October 1987where he oversaw the annual design and in-struction of 25 undergraduate courses for 1,500cadets annually.

Mueh was born Jan. 8, 1944, in Celle, Ger-many, and emigrated to the United States in1951. He entered the Air Force in 1962 as amember of the Academy's eighth graduatingclass, and graduated with a bachelor of sciencedegree in chemistry in 1966. While at the Acad-emy, Mueh was a two-year letterwinner in soc-cer as a goalie. He still holds the Academyrecord for saves in a game with 30, accomplishingit twice in 1965 against North Carolina and Bene-dictine. In his junior and senior years, Muehhelped the Falcons to the Rocky Mountain Inter-collegiate Soccer League championship and quar-terfinal berths in the NCAA tournament. He wasa first-team all-league selection in 1965.

Following graduation, Mueh completed twoassignments in intelligence before attending theUniversity of Wisconsin where he earned his mas-ter's degree in chemistry in 1970. He later earned

a doctorate degree in chemistry from Wisconsinin 1976 as a distinguished graduate. He has alsocompleted Squadron Officer School, Air Com-mand and Staff College and Air War College.

Between earning the two degrees, Mueh re-turned to the Academy as an instructor in the de-partment of chemistry from 1970-72. He alsoserved as assistant soccer coach and played semi-pro soccer with the Aurora Internationals in Den-ver during those two years, leading theInternationals to the Colorado state title in 1971.He volunteered for duty in Vietnam and servedas an intelligence officer in Saigon, Republic ofVietnam and at Nakhon Phanom RTAB, Thailand,in 1972 and 1973.

After earning his doctorate degree, Mueh re-turned to the Academy in 1976 as an associateprofessor of chemistry. He remained at the Acad-emy except for a stint in 1985-86 as the specialassistant for technical matters at the Defense In-telligence Agency at the Pentagon.

In 1986, he assumed the position of actinghead, department of chemistry, before being se-lected for his position of permanent professorand head of the department of chemistry in 1987.As faculty athletics representative, he was activein both the Western Athletic Conference andMountain West Conference, and was the Acad-emy's representative on the transition team toform the new MWC, the only faculty athleticsrepresentative on the team. He competes in golf, racquetball, handball and tennis, and has pro-moted Air Force Academy intercollegiate sportsthroughout his tenure, beginning with work aschairman of the hockey eligibility committee, of-ficer representative to the men's golf team andfive years as the officer representative to thefootball team.

Mueh is married to the former Sally Flax ofCincinnati, Ohio. They have three children: Kris-tine, Kurt and Deborah.

Few schools in the country have an athletic program as extensive as the AirForce Academy's.

The goals of the athletic program are to enhance the physical conditioning ofall cadets, to develop the physical skills necessary for officership, to teach lead-ership in a competitive environment and to build character. There are three sub-divisions of the athletic program: intercollegiate athletics, intramurals andphysical education.

The intercollegiate program has 17 men's and 10 women's NCAA-sanctionedteams, facing some of the top competition in the nation. Men’s teams are foot-ball, baseball, basketball, ice hockey, cross-country, fencing, golf, gymnastics, in-door and outdoor track, lacrosse, rifle, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, waterpolo and wrestling. The Academy fields women's teams in basketball, cross-coun-try, fencing, gymnastics, rifle, indoor and outdoor track, swimming and diving, soccer, tennis and volleyball. In addition, the Academy sponsors two non-NCAAprograms; boxing and cheerleading.

The majority of the Academy’s men’s and women’s programs compete at theNCAA Division I level in the Mountain West Conference. The Falcons compete inthis conference against teams from Boise State, Colorado State, New Mexico, SanDiego State, TCU, UNLV and Wyoming. All sports also compete against non-con-ference opponents, including many nationally-ranked teams.

The football team competes annually for the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy, which is emblematic of service academy football supremacy. The Falcons havewon the trophy 17 times, which is more than any other academy. The winner ofthe annual rivalry visits the White House to have the trophy presented by thePresident of the United States.

The USAFA Cadet Field House is one of the most impressive buildings in thecountry. It’s a modern, versatile structure with seemingly endless uses. The $5.6million building is five stories high and 396 feet by 426 feet, the size of three foot-ball fields laid side by side. The structure is divided into three areas--basketballarena, ice hockey arena and multipurpose area. The three sections have a com-bined seating capacity of more than 9,000.

Clune Arena seats 5,858. The Cadet Ice Rink has a seating capacity of 2,470,while the multipurpose area seats 1,000 fans for track and field competitions.

The department’s newest facility, the Holaday Athletic Center (pictured left),was completed in July 2011.
