MISC. SWIMMING AND DIVING INFORMATION

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) is America’soldest collegiate athletic conference.

The 2008-09 school year marks the 122nd consecutive year of operationfor the NCAA Division III affiliated conference. The MIAA was founded March 24,1888. F rom the very beg inn ing , the MIAA has conduc ted fu l l - seasonchampionships in multiple sports. There have been changes in some of the sports(bicycle racing and Indian club juggling have long since disappeared, andbasketball did not even exist in 1888), but these changes have served to developthe MIAA into one of America’s finest NCAA Division III conferences, todayoffering 18 sports for men and women.

The MIAA’s continuity is noteworthy. Of the 12 schools that have had fullmembership, eight are still members — Adrian, Albion, Alma, Calvin, Hope,Kalamazoo, Olivet, and Saint Mary’s. Significantly, not one of these eightcolleges has ever belonged to any other formal league. Albion and Olivet werecharter members although Albion is the only member to hold continuousmembership. Ex-members are Michigan State University (1888-1907), EasternMichigan University (1892-1926), Hillsdale College (1888-1960), and DefianceCollege (1997-2000).

The MIAA’s membership list went unchanged from 1960 until 1997 whenthe Defiance College of Ohio and Saint Mary’s College of Indiana were invitedto join. It also marked the first time that the league added members outside thestate of Michigan. The league st ipulated, however, that the name of theconference would not change. The inaugural year of current members are: Adrian(1908), Albion (1888), Alma (1902), Calvin (1953), Hope (1926), Kalamazoo(1896), Olivet (1888), and Saint Mary’s (1997).

The MIAA marked a historic note in 2002 when the league acceptedWisconsin Lutheran College of Milwaukee as an associate member for thepurpose of competing in football. Wisconsin Lutheran left the MIAA after the2007 season to join the Northern Athletics Conference.

Trine University of Angola, Ind., became a conference member in 2004-05upon its acceptance as a provisional NCAA member.

Now Open!The Cutler Event Center

Thanks to the generosity of Dave Cutler, a 1965 Olivet alumnus, TheOlivet College Cutler Event Center is now open. Cutler contributed twodonations totaling $4.3 million toward the $5.1 million facility. Constructionof the facility began last October. A grand opening ceremony will takeplace after the Homecoming football game Oct. 4, 2008.

According to Cutler, his support of the center has been given inrecognition of Olivet’s 1961 football team. That year, he was the startingquarterback and led the Comets to one of their best overall records inschool history at 8-1.

“Olivet College is very fortunate to have an alumnus such as DaveCutler, who has taken on a tremendous responsibility by funding themajority of the events center,” said Olivet President Don Tuski.

“This is truly a monumental gift that helps Olivet maintain a competitiveedge with other colleges and universities. The entire Olivet Collegecommunity is grateful for Dave Cutler’s outstanding support through theyears.”

The 44,500-square-foot multipurpose facility was added on to theexisting athletic building at the Cutler Athletic Complex. It will be used bythe college and community for activities ranging from athletic events tocommencement exercises, student events, guest speakers, concerts andconferences. The new facility will include a fitness center, 100-meter track, locker rooms, coaches’ offices and wrestling room.

Olivet’s men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and wrestlingprograms will use the facility for practices and competition. All of thecollege’s 18 NCAA Division III athletic programs will use the center for off-season workouts and conditioning.

A native of DeWitt, Cutler is a noted software engineer and designerwith Microsoft and holds more than 20 patents. After arriving at Microsoftin 1988, he launched the Windows NT group and has since led thedevelopment of three major releases of the product. In addition to leadingthe Windows 2000 team, Cutler contributed to the architecture of all partsof the system. In recognition of his significant contributions to the field,Cutler was awarded membership in the National Academy of Engineeringin 1993.
