dons score the winning run in the 2006 dante Benedetti Classic

For the eleventh consecutive season, the University of San Francisco baseball program will have the majority of the 2009 schedule broadcast live on the internet. The Diamond Dons, in partnership with the official website of the USF athletic department - www.usfdons.com - will broadcast all the action. Live video streaming of home games debuted for the 2005 season, courtesy of Yahoo Sports. The broadcasting department at San Francisco State enhanced coverage of baseball last season and will return for their second year on the Hilltop. In addition to the audio and video options, computer users will once again be able to follow live play-by-play using the popular CSTV’s Gametracker feature, for all USF home games and the majority of road contests throughout the season. San Francisco is one of just four schools in the West Coast Conference to offer baseball broadcast coverage. Diamond Dons baseball is fortunate to have a talented group of broadcasters to provide all the action for the exciting 2009 campaign, anchored by USF Assistant A.D. - Media Relations, Ryan McCrary, who returns for his eighth year behind the microphone. Thanks for your continued support and enjoy the games.

One of the most important measures of the quality of any university is the quality of its alumni. USF Alumni are making their mark on the world in ways public and private, large or small. From judges to politicians to professional athletes, USF Alumni are mak-ing names for themselves – and the university – everywhere they go.

Throughout its long and distinguished history, the University of San Francisco has produced many student-athletes who have made a tremendous impact not only on the court or on the field but have built successful careers in the public and private sector.

THE DETAILS

THE UNIVERSITY OF SAN FRANCISCO A PLACE LIKE NO OTHER

Located in the heart of one of the world’s most lively cities, the University of San Fran-cisco boasts an ideal living and learning environment. Golden Gate Park, the largest mu-nicipal park in the United States is in our backyard. Lone Mountain, one of San Francis-co’s 10 highest peaks, is our home. And our view can’t be beat.

The USF student body is the most ethnically diverse of the 28 Jesuit colleges and uni-versities and is among the top-20 most ethnically diverse of all colleges and universities in the country. But our diversity goes beyond ethnic categories to include a rich mix-ture of economic, educational, religious and geographic backgrounds. USF students are the first in their families to go to college as well as children of doctors and lawyers. They are from 48 states, two U.S. Territories and 84 countries.

USF STUDENTS MAKING A DIFFERENCE

The results are in: USF offers a more cultural, community-minded college experience than most U.S. universities, according to a UCLA study of more than 150 four-year universities. According to the survey of freshmen students across the country, 73 per-cent of USF students did community service, compared to a national average of 53 per-cent.

USF’s 8,500-member student body is composed of students from 75 countries, and is ranked in the Top 15 national universities for student diversity and international stu-dent enrollment.

The University of San Francisco is also known for its public service efforts USF students also do more tutoring, volunteering, and visiting museums than the national average. While here, students say their appreciation for cultural differences and social justice is-sues increases. According to a May 2002 survey of graduating seniors, nearly 70 per-cent of students say their appreciation of those increased while at USF, while about 60 percent said USF enhanced their sense of social justice.

REVEALED: GARDEN OF EDEN? ALMOST

USF prides itself in being a “green” campus committed to protecting the environment. The university recently installed solar panels on the roof of the Hayes-Healy residence halls and the Koret Center to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. The campus isn’t just a collection of buildings. It’s also home to more than 100 species of native California plants-planted, potted, and positioned all over the campus’s picturesque 55 acres. The grounds have twice been recognized nationally with Professional Grounds Management awards. Among the stand-outs are majestic Redwoods, spiraling Monterey Cypress, and its smaller hybridized cousin and university tree, the Leyland Cypress.

NOT JUST HERE TO PLAY BALL

USF baseball star and 2007 Arts and Sciences Valedictorian Tavo Hall (shown at right) delivering the commencement address to his peers. USF athletes are often even more impressive in the classroom than on the field - as a group, their gradua-tion rates are much higher than the national average. USF student-athletes earned 24 West Coast Conference All-Academic Team awards to back up their feats on the playing field.

Below: Seen here from atop Saint Ignatius

Church, the stairway up to the Lone Mountain

campus provides spectacular views of San

Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area.

Below: Saint Ignatius Church is one of the the largest

churches on any college campus in the U.S. Its prominent

twin spires and its location on the hilltop makes it visible

from the San Francisco Bay to the ocean.

Located centrally in one of the most colorful cities in the world, USF’s campus overlooks both downtown San Francisco and Ocean Beach, putting it in one of the most prime locations anywhere. In addtion to one of the most desired locations in the world, campus life has made great improvements in recent years as five extensive renovation proj-ects have taken place in the last six years, providing faculty and stu-dents with a unique environment to learn and live.

USF’s beautiful Lone Mountain campus has seen enormous growth with a completely renovated dormitory for un-derclassmen. It’s takes a little work, but once to the top, Lone Mountain offers some of the best views anywhere in the City. And recently renovated classrooms too! Addi-tionally, Loyola Village, the “Bellagio” of on-campus living boasts two bedroom suites fully furnished for residents. And just this year, Kalmanovitz Hall (formerly Campion Hall) opened its doors for classes with one of the most technologically advanced facilities in America.

USF ATHLETICS REPRESENTING A GLOBAL UNIVERSITY:

An urban university located in one of the world’s most dynamic and diverse cities, the University of San Francisco has long been a pioneer for social justice and students from more than 80 countries currently attend USF. Dons Athletics have long been pioneers of diversity and three of USF’s most legendary programs exemplify this trait.

USF’s 1955-56 NCAA Championship basketball team was the first team in NCAA history to feature three African American starters, headlined by NBA legends K.C. Jones and Bill Russell more a decade before West Texas State started five en route to the 1966 title.

USF’s storied 1951 “Unbeaten, Untied and Uninvited” football team was one of the top teams in collegiate history, featuring an NCAA re-cord three players who would be inducted into the National Football League Hall of Fame in Canton. A berth in the Orange Bowl was offered, following an unblemished 9-0 season, but only if the Dons left their two African-American players at home. The team declined and USF was forced to immediately drop football due to financial problems.

One of the most successful programs in NCAA history, Dons soccer captured five NCAA Championships beginning in 1966, featuring a “United Nations” roster, with prominent players from four continents.

In the 2007-08 academic year student athletes from 34 countries rep-resented the Green and Gold.

RICKY AND THERESE CURROTTO STUDENT ATHLETE CENTER:

In addition to the improvements to USF’s weight room, training room, and lock-er rooms, War Memorial Gym boasts renovated offices for USF’s coaches and the new Academic Support Center, where student athletes can meet with an ad-visor, register for classes or receive help from tutors. All teams hold weekly study hall sessions in the center as well.

NEGOESCO STADIUM:

The home field of USF’s legendary soccer program underwent aesthet-ic upgrades this off season as well. One of the most notable improve-ments fans will notice at Negoesco Stadium this year is the installation of banners celebrating the rich legacy and tradition of USF Soccer. Six national championship banners hang alongside banners celebrating the Dons glorious postseason past.

Other changes include the installation of European football-style adver-tising panels to acknowledge sponsors and supporters of USF Athletics and the Dons Soccer program. Additionally, protective team shells will be installed in the bench areas.

USF ATHLETICS: IMPROVED FACILITIES

BENEDETTI DIAMOND:

In the wake of record seaosons, the USF Baseball Program has seen a number of upgrades in their facilities as well. In the last three seasons, the Diamond Dons have received a new 800 square foot locker room, a new infield was installed to major league specifications, and a new outfield wall was constructed (including 70-foot high netting to protect the surrounding neighborhood).
