The University of South Florida System comprises three member institutions, each with separate classifications assigned by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education:

The USF Board of Trustees is responsible for cost-effective policy decisions appropriate to the system mission and the implementation and maintenance of high-quality education programs within the laws and rules of the state. Campus Boards for USF St. Petersburg and USF Sarasota-Manatee are appointed by the USF Board of Trustees. The USF Board of Trustees was created in 2001 by the Florida legislature.

The 13 trustees include distinguished figures in accounting, banking, business, education, law, technology, philanthropy and public policy leadership. Six trustees are appointed by Florida’s governor, and five trustees are appointed by the Florida Board of Governors. The USF System Faculty Council President and USF System Student Advisory Council President also serve as trustees. The USF System President serves as Corporate Secretary.

• USF’s fall 2018 Freshman academic profile posts an average SAT score of 1283 and a high school GPA of 4.09.

• The Morsani College of Medicine brought in its most selective incoming medical student cohort to date, with an average MCAT score of 515, placing it among the top of all medical schools in the country.

• The University of South Florida System is home to a student body of 50,755 students representing over 145 different countries.

USF SYSTEM RESEARCH & FINANCES• The USF System reached $568 million in total research expenditures in fiscal year 2016/17 according to the National Science Foundation HERD Survey.

• The USF System ranks 1st in Florida, 5th in the nation among public universities and 12th worldwide for granted U.S. patents among all universities according to the Intellectual Property Owners Association/NAI (2017), and has ranked in the Top 10 among public universities for U.S. patents granted for the past eight years (2010-2017).

• USF ranked 4th worldwide for organizations with the most Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) named in 2017, a rank USF has held for the past four years. As of 2018 USF has a total of 60 AAAS Fellows among its faculty.

A designated “Preeminent State Research University,” the University of South Florida is one of the nation’s top public research universities and one of 49 public research universities nationwide classified as both a Doctoral University with “Highest Research Activity” and as a “Community Engaged” institution by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Offering more than 40 graduate and undergraduate programs in the arts and sciences, business and education, USF St. Petersburg (USFSP) is Pinellas County’s only residential public research university. USFSP features small classes taught by faculty who challenge their students to excel through innovative approaches to learning and collaborative research opportunities. Located in downtown St. Petersburg, USFSP offers distinct opportunities for all students to engage with the community through internships and field-based experiences. USF St. Petersburg is part of a select group of Master’s Medium institutions that earned the highly prestigious Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement.

• A collaborative effort implemented at USFSP resulted in a 10-percentage point increase in APR retention rates for first-time in college students. In one year, the retention rate rose from 65.5 to 75.5 percent (2017).

• For the first time, USFSP made The Princeton Review’s “Guide to 375 Green Colleges.” The publication highlights colleges with the most exceptional commitments to sustainability based on academic offerings and career preparation for students (2017).

• USF Sarasota-Manatee hired a new regional chancellor, Dr. Karen A. Holbrook, in January 2018.

• In fall 2018 USF Sarasota-Manatee started a four-year nursing program in collaboration with USF Health’s College of Nursing in Tampa and a CyberSecurity program to meet the needs of the community.

• USF Sarasota-Manatee’s offsite teaching labs—including Mote Marine Laboratory, the Culinary Innovation Laboratory at Lakewood Ranch and the Teaching Hotel at the Resort at Longboard Key Club—give students unique opportunities for hands on experiences.

• USF Sarasota-Manatee is a member of the Cross College Alliance, a group of five area colleges and universities that enable students to take classes at member institutions.
