Cultural Center of the Philippines The National Music Competitions for Young Artists embarks on its 36th year in 2009 with a renewed dedication to its triple mandate of talent discovery, talent exposure

and artistic education.

The Competition continues to include the component of Master Class Workshops and will incorporate performances as well in its regional forays.

The theme for this year mirrors even more clearly decades of service to the national and international community of musicians. “Paglikha ng Kalikasan ng Diwa’t Mundo sa Musika’t Sining” reiterates the belief that it is in the shaping of the youth that is shaped also humanity in its entirety. It is the hope of NAMCYA that in decades to come there will be an even firmer realization that it is primarily and substantially through the ennoblement of the human spirit - in NAMCYA through Music - that an ennoblement of the entire human being can be accomplished.

Young outstanding talent in the following instruments and categories shall be discovered in 2009.

Since its inception in 1973, NAMCYA has been staying true to its mandate of encouraging young artists to excel in music composition and performance and in preserving, developing and promoting Philippine music as art and as a handmaid of cultural development. It had also been immensely helpful in discovering young artists in the field of choral singing, piano, chamber music, family ensemble, and indigenous instruments.

This year is another testimony of perpetuating the rich tradition of discovering young and fresh Filipino talents in the field of music through rigid and multi-level competitions. This manner of discovering future artists only goes to show that the NAMCYA is well on its way of effectively carrying out to full fruition its mandate.

Congratulations to the organizers of this year’s competitions and festival for again ushering in an era of a new horizon for the country’s future artists.

Maraming salamat! Mabuhay!

TThe National Music Competition for Young Artists (NAMCYA) has always been committed in harnessing the talents of the younger generation of Filipinos to preserve, develop and promote Philippine music since its inception in 1973. The rigid competition has produced a harvest of excellent and exceptional talents, the bearers of our heritage, who continuously reap honor for our country, building national pride and identity through their world-class performances.

Indeed, NAMCYA is a dynamic force in the preservation of Filipino heritage and music that gives inspiration and encouragement to the young budding artists of today to apply their gifts of peace for national development and a culture.

I applaud and congratulate the National Music Competition for Young Artists, currently under the direction of Professor Ramon Acoymo, on behalf of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), chaired by DepEd Usec. Dr. Vilma Labrador for this wonderful endeavor that provides a rare opportunity for talented young artists to discover, develop and showcase to the world the wealth of our diverse artistic expressions.

TThe Cultural Center of the Philippines congratulates with pride the participants of the 2009 National Music Competitions for Young Artists as they enter the National Finals Week at the CCP from November 10 to 15.

This year, we will see the most talented compete in Choir, Voice, Piano, Traditional Music, Dance Brass Instruments, Guitar and Rondalla Ensemble. We are confident that this will be an exciting competition as well as dazzling showcase of the country’s upcoming talents. It is most gratifying to know that even the youngest Filipinos are interested to play classcal music, and that they do so with excellence and gusto.

We congratulate all those who joined this year’s competition as well as the parents and the teachers of the NAMCYA participants. They have unselfishly given their love, guidance and support to our young artists, nurturing them and enabling them to pursue their art and craft.

National Music Competitions for Young Artists

Message

Of all the work I do these days, serving as chairperson of Namcya is the most psychologically and emotionally fulfilling.

It is with great pleasure that I watch our young Filipino musicians develop into the best that they can be. I see their sacrifices bear fruit before my very eyes and am thankful for the opportunity to serve.

This year is no different. Or should I say that despite our present economic problems, along with the rest of the world, we can still find time for music. And well we should.

Good times and bad times come and go, but music is forever.

This year, we have another bumper crop of excellent young musicians taking part in our annual competition, which we all know is no competition at all. This is because of our long standing policy not to declare winners or champions in the conventional sense. Those that receive the highest honors are considered to have perfected their craft and have reached the pinnacle of technical proficiency, while those who do not are simply reminded that the task of improving one’s music never ends. This competition is just another rung on their ladder to the peak, their peak.

Join us as we witness our best young musical artists perform original Filipino music for the ages.

TThe year 2009 will see yet another noteworthy endeavour to find the country’s most outstanding young musicians as the National Music Competitions for Young Artists embarks upon another nationwide search in the Performance Categories of Choir, Voice, Piano, Traditional Music, Dance, Brass Instruments, Guitar and Rondalla.

The creation of a new environment of the human spirit which determines how we create a new environment for our earth is invaluably inspired, guided and enriched by those finer intangible realms of experience which only music and the arts can truly and completely provide.

No richer mine of resources for this provision can be found than in the young practitioners of music and the arts that endeavors like the NAMCYA, now on its fourth decade, continually and tirelessly discover and uncover.

To all who makes this effort possible and ever stronger: our humble thanks. See you at the competitions!

Dinupdup is a ceremony of the affluent tribesmen in Lagawe, Barney, Boliwong, Cudong, and Hingyon. Two to three days and six to eight sacrificial pigs are needed to complete all the rites of the dinupdup which is offered as thanksgiving and petition for the sustenance of power and health, and for healing sick members of the family.

Several days before the offering, the husband and wife invite the mumbaki or native priests. On a designated day at twilight, the native priests gather. They open the jar of wine and the oldest among them sip first. Then he assigns tasks for each mumbaki for the linnawa.

The linnawa is the first step in the dinupdup wherein the souls of the kindred of both husband and wife are invited to come and partake in the feast of their descendants, and to lay their blessings to the family for health, peace and prosperity.

The alim, the story of the great hunter, Cabbigat of Kiangan is chanted from early evening until morning. One of the native priests rises to shout the gopa to the or the chanters, stating to his fellow mumbaki not to think little of him since he is also rich like them.

The guhad follows whereby deities are invited to the feast, bless the pigs, and partake of the offering. The pigs are butchered and cooked and a prayer called gonob is said before everyone eats.

For the next three days, the family and mumbaki are prohibited from eating specified food and performing certain activities, after which one of the mumbaki performs the kahiw to seal the offering and to lift the restrictions.

Tongaw is a cultural celebration in Mountain Province. It is observed three times a year in accordance to the seasons. The first one is during sowing season followed by the planting season and harvest time. The main purpose is to ask for blessings from Kabunyan for bountiful produce and to thank him for the harvest.

The ceremony begins with a group of men heading for the babawian to decide on the time of the season.

On their way, keen observation is of vital importance. No omen should be seen and heard such as snakes, black birds, and unusual sounds. As soon as they reach the designated venue, the men share their observations and they decide on whether to continue or postpone the ceremony. They return to the barangay and proceed to the dap-ay to announce their decision.

Once the decision is made to proceed, a rest day is declared for all the members of the community. Those working in the fields must go home immediately when they hear the shouts of the men. Heavy punishment will be imposed to those who do not comply.

From the dap-ay, the men will bring the sacrificial animals to the patpatayan and offer them to Kabunyan. Then they go back to the dap-ay to continue the ritual. Women and children join the men for the dances, songs, chants, games, and food preparation. People from other barangay join the festivities bringing food and wine to offer.

During this time, no one in the barangay is allowed to go out to work or to travel. Those who do not join must stay home and do household chores. Punishment is strictly imposed on whoever disobeys the rule.

Traditionally part of Davao del Sur, Davao City is known to be the home of the low land Bagobo tribes such as the Tagabawa, Clata, Guingan sub-groups. Big Bagobo communities and other indigenous tribes have lived in Davao even before the Spaniards came to Mindanao. Most of the performers in this group have ancestors belonging to these tribes.

Davao’s tribal performance tradition is always an integration of songs, dances, rituals, and chants. Seldom do we observe a single form being performed by lone tribal artist.

When there is a special occasion, there are always rituals which develop into a social activity involving the whole community through music, dance, chants, and other forms of artistic communication of faith, virtues, and morals.

Very basic to the Bagobo tribe are the instruments called tagungguhan or ahongan also called kolingtang by other subgroups, the dubakan (drums), the bandali (iron gong), the lantoy (bamboo flute), and the indigenous kawayan clickers.

The performance piece employs the Tagungguhan Badbad and Panihuman which are common pieces of the Southern indigenous tribes, with slight variations in melodic patterns. The Saliston, the Sonoran K’ Tolus (Music of the Deities) is a contemporary arrangement of the traditional pentatonic scale of the Tagungguhan.

One of the most popular folklores in the B’laan community is the story of Siling, an unseen spirit who lives in the midst of the forest. She has magical powers and is believed to bewitch people.

Some B’laan elders claim that they were victims of Siling in their youth. Through songs and dances, they describe what they felt and experienced during their encounter with her.

Based on the B’ laan beliefs, aside from living creatures in the forest, beauty, prosperity and melodious sounds abound in nature. Young children, however, are forbidden to wander alone in the forest because it is guarded by unseen creatures and spirits. When they do so, Siling disguised as their parents, misleads until they lose consciousness from exhaustion. Once caught and put under her spell, they will roam the forest forever unless they urinate from the high trees.

The performance is about the B’laan’s way of life in the community. It portrays also how they appreciate nature like the river and vast land with green grasses and trees. It is also about the bonding of family - the love of a mother for her child and a child for his mother, and the celebration when a lost member of the family is found safe.

The story of Siling to the B’laan tribe gives a sense of awareness of the beauty and the importance of nature to man while being held responsible for its existence.
