Explain why you chose the selected artist to compare with Chuck Close. You may explain by comparing the different philosophy between the 2 artists or you may compare the choice of subject matter or style by each artist. (E.g. Chua Mia Tee is from the Realist school and he believed that art should reflect real life but his style of realism is very different from that of Close as it is not of photorealistic quality. Chua strives to record daily life of ordinary Singaporeans as well as nostalgic landscapes whose existence is threatened by development and modernisation. Whereas for Close, he paints people who are personal to him like his friends and family, featuring them up close and larger than life. This is unconventional as typically large portraits usually feature famous people).

Describe and Analyse (EOA & POAD) at least 1 artwork done by your selected artist.

You may choose to add an Interpretation here.

Step 2: Plan your points

You need to define what realism is and in the context of Chuck Close, explain what

photorealism is. You also need to identify that ‘Assess’ refers to ‘Evaluation’. You need to show your understanding of photorealism and how it relates to Chuck Close showing

evidence of how the artist used photorealism in order to do your evaluation.

These evidences will be in a form of your description, analysis and interpretation.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: You should not do an evaluation without the doing the earlier

steps of the Feldman Model)

‘Comment’ is basically a chance for you to give an opinion on Chuck Close’s ‘use of materials’. You can also write about his style and technique in relation to his artistic intentions. A brief introduction on

some background information on Realism/realism will give your answers more depth. You can refer to the SOVA

Exam Guide to obtain this info. (IMPORTANT NOTE: You should relate your answers to Close’s photorealistic

approaches giving your answer a proper context)

This question asks for the similarities and differences between Chuck Close’s work and another work done by a Singaporean artist

who paints in a realistic style. You may compare Close with Chua Mia Tee, Lai Kui

Fang or Georgette Chen.(IMPORTANT NOTE: Although you may compare using any part of the Feldman model, it is important to begin from the

basic Description and Analysis before doing any form of Interpretation or Evaluation)

It is primarily occupied by the Esplanade Park, and was the venue where one of Singapore's largest congregation of satay outlets until their relocation to Clarke Quay as a result of the construction of a major performance arts venue, the Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay, which took its name from this location.)

Step 2: Plan your points

This question asks you to provide a critical point of view on how The

Esplanade relates to its local environment in terms of location -

the Marina Bay area and the Singapore River. (IMPORTANT NOTE: You still need to do a

Description and Analysis of the structure before you write your

critical viewpoint)

This question asks you to explain and elaborate your understanding

of the status of the arts in Singapore and define the role in

which The Esplanade plays.

This question asks you to identify which other prominent art centre to compare with The Esplanade. You need to introduce the building by

giving a background. Then describe and analyse the form in terms of its

architectural structure. Lastly, ‘Assess’ (evaluate) the designs of

the two buildings in terms of its purpose and how it promotes cultural

identity in its own country.
