Top Gal 2011 Who knew that two Toko girls would be placed 1 st and 2 nd in the 2011 Top Gal Competition out of 27 girls from the South Otago region. What is Top Gal? It is all about personality and inner beauty. First Friday: mug shots, interviews, singing, massages. It was very nerve wracking meeting other contestants and the judges. This would be the moment of first impressions. The night was filled with activities of getting to know each other and expressing ourselves through music, make-up and dancing to Zumba®! Second Friday: cupcakes, final eight, values, singing, laughing. More girls came in to be judged. The new girls were pretty cool. We got these white t-shirts and had to write on each others what we valued in them. We also had a cupcake competition which was fun and we got to eat them. On this night the eight were chosen which included both of us. We got to go on a photo shoot. Sunday: hair, makeup, photographs, posing, Pounawea. The final eight travelled over the mountains and far away to Pounawea. We got our hair and makeup done and had an awesome lunch of pizza and chips. Then we got into the photography. Sam was lucky enough to have a go herself. The judges had their final deliberations. Third Friday: finals, family, contestants, prizes. This was the grand finale and no one knew what to expect. Parents, friends, siblings were all there to watch. Random prizes for most photogenic, most helpful etc. were given out and then it was time for the runner up and winner to be announced. Sam’s name was read out first as runner-up. Everyone was so happy but very anxious to see who came out on top. Drum roll please.... Daniele May! Everyone was so happy and gave her a standing ovation. She gave a speech and collected her prize of a $900 stereo, hair and makeup voucher. The presentations were followed by some singing and some food. Later, Daniele even got her own article in the Clutha Leader. We would like to thank the Top gal organisers and sponsors, our fellow contestants, our parents, Jo Taylor, and everyone else who contributed to make this event so successful. Sam Allan and Daniele May. Tokomairiro High School staff and students are very proud of the achievements of these two young women. FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK Kia ora Final Assembly Last Friday we held our final assembly for the term where we honoured those who had achieved academically in their subject as well as acknowledging those who had achieved in other extra curricular areas. A big thank you to Mrs Smith who puts time and creative effort in to producing "Toko TV", a DVD presentation that visually summarises the many activities that take place at the school over the term. It is the "Toko TV" that is shown on the television screen in the foyer of the school office. The school also appreciates the support shown by parents and members of the community who attended the assembly. NCEA Teacher Only Day The Minister of Education has allocated two teacher only days to the implementation of the revised standards for the NCEA. Our first day will be on Wednesday 10th August next term. On this day students will be asked to stay home as the school will be closed for instruction. The other day will be scheduled later in the year near the end of term four. Tena Koutou Tena Koutou Tena Koutou Katoa Wayne Edgar Principal
