Paracetamol – Is it safe? Many of you will have seen the story in the national press recently about two children in the Wellington area, who had to have liver transplants due to Paracetamol causing liver failure. However, this does not mean that you should immediately throw away your Panadol. Paracetamol is usually a very safe medicine as long as you take the correct dose, but even a small overdose can cause serious liver damage and can even be fatal. There are two major causes of accidental overdose of Paracetamol: The dose is not measured properly – many parents use a teaspoon, but this is not accurate, the amount can vary from as little as 2ml to as much as 10ml depending on the spoon. So ALWAYS use a proper medicine measure. At Milton Pharmacy we are now giving out a medicine syringe free of charge with all prescriptions for liquid medicines for children. The other danger, more particularly for adults, is that many other medicines also contain Paracetamol, which may not be obvious from the name – most “cold & flu” tablets contain Paracetamol with other ingredients, so it is very easy to take your Codral and then follow it up with a Panadol for example. NEVER take more than one medicine at a time without first checking with your pharmacist or doctor if they are safe together. All Paracetamol products (either dispensed on a prescription or bought over the counter) will have a recommended dose on the pack. ALWAYS follow these instructions carefully (especially for children) and NEVER take more than the stated dose and NEVER more than FOUR doses in 24 hours. If somebody does take an overdose, either accidental or intentional, contact your doctor or the A & E department immediately for advice. If an overdose is treated in time, permanent damage can be prevented – but the time is short (only a few hours!). Coughs and Colds Following new regulations from Medsafe (the government’s medicine safety organisation), cough and cold medicines should not be given to any children under 6 years of age, and pharmacies will not be allowed to sell them for this age group anymore. The reason for this is that there is evidence from all over the world that the ingredients in these medicines are not safe for young children, and also there is no evidence that any of them work in this age group. If your child has a cold, there are still some things you can do to help them – call into your pharmacy and talk to the pharmacist who will be able to advise you on what is still available. For adults, all cold and cough medicines containing the decongestant Pseudoephedrine will be banned within the next few months (once the government has passed the laws). This is not due to safety reasons, but because this particular ingredient can be made into “P” which the government is trying to reduce. There are alternative products available, so, again, please ask at your local pharmacy. FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK Kia ora Congratulations to the members of the Australian Tour Group who have reached their fundraising total and are close to participating in the tour itself. On Thursday this week we will farewell them at a special assembly. This week we welcomed Mr Lewis and Mrs Wilson to our school. Mr Lewis will be teaching Mrs Chalmers science classes while she is on maternity leave. Mrs Wilson will be operating the canteen. We have reached the half way point of the educational year. Students were reminded at assembly that it is how they meet the challenges of learning that determines their level of success. They were asked to make this year one that they feel proud of how they faced the challenges of new work and achieved success. Tena Koutou Tena Koutou Tena Koutou Katoa Wayne Edgar Principal

Milton Senior Citizens Report The programme committee made a good choice of entertainers for last Friday’s neeting being rewarded with an excellent attendance. President Shirley Garbutt welcomed everyone with a special welcome back to Wilma. A moments silence was observed in respect for two past members, Kate Heads and Iris Philip. Caci was our first entertainer with, “The Black Hills of Dakota, Daddy’s Hands and I’m Gonna Knock on your Door.” A confident young performer, with an intriguing stance while keeping beat with the music. Sarah followed with “The Tennessee Waltz, The popular, Rose Garden and Cowboys Sweetheart.” A sweet singer with several awards to her credit. Their mentor and tutor Alison Ward entertained next with, “Have I told you Lately, The Orchid” and joined by two nieces with “Honky Tonk Merry Go-round.” Each of the singers performed one item each with Alison concluding with “A Single Yellow Rose.” It was a pleasure to have these young aspiring singers entertaining us, thanks to Alison Ward. The raffle was won by Moira Hastie. Coming Events 30th July – Soup and bun day 10th September – The Clutha Singers 30th August – Concert Green Island Group

Book Review Down the Rabbit Hole By Peter Abrahams Walker Books Move over Nancy Drew, out of the way Trixie Belden, there’s a new teen detective in town……and we don’t mean Veronica Mars! “Down the Rabbit Hole” is the first novel in the Ingrid Levin-Hill series. Set in the small town of Echo Falls, this novel provides a well observed portrait of teen life as well as an interesting and gripping murder mystery. Ingrid Levin-Hill is nearly fourteen, a star soccer player and an aspiring young actress. Up for the role of Alice in a stage version of Alice in Wonderland ( hence the title), she gets involved in mystery when a local eccentric woman is murdered. The mystery deepens as she investigates a story that surrounds the theatre she acts in and reaches into the past and has shocking repercussions for all involved. Set against the background of a family under pressure and a backdrop of theatrical life, this teen novel is well written with a convincing mystery and intriguing characters. Abrahams is a successful crime novelist for adults and creates a terrific and believable teen character in Ingrid. She’s smart, funny and empathic. This is a fine mystery novel with an affectionate nod here and there to Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes and this along with its readability will make it a popular choice for teenage readers. This book is available from The Tokomairiro High School Library.

Are You Ready For The New

GST Rate? The rate of tax to pay on goods and services (GST) is increasing from 12.5% to 15% from 1 October 2010. This article, written by Inland Revenue for GST-registered businesses, discusses some of the issues you need to be aware of. Calculating GST You can find the GST component of a GST-inclusive amount by multiplying by the fraction 3/23. Or you can divide the GST-inclusive amount by 7.66 recurring. Example: The value of an item (GST exclusive): $1,500 GST at 15%: $ 225 Total price (GST inclusive): $1,725 Using the fraction: Step 1: $1,725.00 multiplied by 3 is $5,175 Step 2: $5,175 divided by 23 is $225.00 (the amount of the GST). Dividing by 7.66 recurring: If you use the recurring figure instead of the fraction method it can sometimes give you an incorrect answer depending on how many decimal points you use, for example: $1,725.00 divided by 7.66 is $225.20 - this is incorrect $1,725.00 divided by 7.666 is $225.02 - this is incorrect $1,725.00 divided by 7.6666 recurring = $225.00 - this is correct Using the fraction method (multiply by 3 and then dividing by 23) will always provide you with an accurate answer. Your prices and business system You will need to consider if you will alter the prices you charge for goods and services to cover the increased GST liability due to all GST-inclusive prices including GST at 15% from 1 October 2010. You will also need to ensure that your business is ready to account for GST on all sales and income, as well as purchases and expenses, from 1 October 2010 at the new GST rate of 15%. If you use software to account for GST you'll need to ensure you can change the rate or calculation, or access an update from your software provider. If you account for GST on the payments or hybrid basis you'll also need to be able to identify invoices that have been issued or received but not yet paid in order to calculate your transitional adjustment in your taxable period that includes 30 September 2010. There’s more information about time of supply rules at www.ird.govt.nz. GST invoices and receipts From 1 October you'll need to make sure you include GST at 15%. If you claim input tax deductions you'll need to ensure the correct amount of GST is shown on the invoice used as the basis for your claim. Existing contracts The GST Act allows for prices in existing contracts to be increased by the amount of the increase in GST. GST returns during the transitional period 1. GST periods starting from 1 October 2010: If you file your GST returns monthly or if you are a two or six-monthly filer that has a return period ending 30 September 2010 you'll calculate the GST on your returns for periods ending on or after 1 October using the new GST rate of 15%. 2. GST periods that span 1 October 2010: If you file your GST returns for one of the following taxable periods then you will need to file a transitional return for the return period which spans the transition to the new rate of GST on 1 October 2010: ● two-month taxable period (ie periods ending on the last day of February, April, June, August, October and December). ●six-month taxable period for periods ending: ○ October and April ○ November and May ○ December and June ○ January and July ○ February and August. We're developing a special one-off transitional GST return to cover the rate change for supplies received before, and on or after, 1 October 2010. After this time you'll go back to using your normal GST return. Updating GST returns We'll update online and paper GST returns to reflect the new rate. These will be available for use prior to 1 October. If you use software to account for GST you'll need to ensure you can change the rate or calculation, or access an update from your software provider. Need more information? Please go to our website at www.ird.govt.nz.

Euchre Report

The Milton Swimming Club recently held their annual AGM and had an excellent turn out of parents ensuring that the club will continue on in good heart. Raylene Stammers presented her last President’s report for the club. It was highlighted in the report that the club had moved to more of a learn to swim club with 92 children enrolled in swimming classes but only 2 of these children were competing regularly at swimming meets. It is hoped as the current children gain their confidence and grow as better swimmers they may be encouraged to swim in competitions. As Raylene has now stepped aside after many years in various roles for the club she was thanked by the new committee for all her hard work over the years. Tracey Hall presented her annual financial report which showed all accounts paid and

the club in a very good f inanc ial posi t ion af ter purchasing new swimming equipment at the start of 2010. Office Bearers for 2010/2011 swimming season. President: Alan Robinson Vice President: Malcolm Lowery Secretary: Melissa Hewitt Treasurer: Catherine Walker Committee: Mark Tyler, Annika Dickie, Stella Lloyd, Rachael Feegan, Annie Taylor, Tracey Hall With more and more children wishing to learn how to swim each year the club is looking for new coaches. Anyone wishing to become a coach can contact Alan Robinson on 417 8744 or 021 243 0940 so arrangements can be made for new coaches to attend a coaching course at Moana Pool.

Toko open the scoring 5 minutes into the second spell when S Smail makes a break. S Scott takes the in pass to run away and score unconverted 24-11. In the 35th minute P Scott kicks penalty to make the final score 27-11. This was another very good team effort with the forwards dominating their opposites and giving the backs a steady supply of good quality ball and the backs finishing off well. Player of the day: Tim Howie. Next week Clutha away.

Bridge Report Results Handicap Pairs 15/07/2010

Last Thursday night the Rep teams travelled to Clinton for the final Rep game of the season. There were some very close games, with a close result. Milton came out the winners of the night with 22 points to Clinton’s 20. There were no three winners from either side, but three teams from Milton had 2 wins each. Melva Heads, Murray Grant and Gary Foster.

There was a real OOPS! on one end of the last game by one of the Milton teams. The third started to take out the bowls one by one and OH! Darn, they went down by 8. The pressure was too much for the third, as he had to rush off to the “Little Boys Room.” Maybe this is cause for the Milton Presidents’ shout. See you on mats. Kitty
