Changing With The Times Many years ago, the word Playcentre meant just that – play. Today things are very different and we have adapted our sessions to include structure whilst still encouraging different types of play. A typical day at Playcentre begins with the children arriving and putting their lunch in the box and the extended session children putting their yoghurt in the fridge. Children then engage in free play until 9.30am when there is a daily activity planned by our qualified staff and all those children who wish to join in may do so – this activity could be painting, baking, icing biscuits, creating a collage artwork. All these activities encourage the children to take part in something different and to be proud of their creations and all the time having fun! At 10.00am it’s tidy-up time and then all children sit down on the mat for singing time and take part in our interactive songs. At 10.15am it’s time to wash their hands and go and get their lunchbox and sit down at the table to eat their morning tea until the buzzer goes and then lunchboxes get put away and the children may then take part in the 10.30am activity which may be a game, building huts, fishing for magnetic fish etc. After this activity there are many other things the children can do – we have lots of blocks, dress-ups, playdough kitchen area, collage area, painting area, puzzle area or if the weather is nice a fabulous playground and sandpit area. The children all learn very quickly what is expected of them and all the while they are learning to respect each other, our staff and parents. They know that they need to share and look after each other and they are also learning to sit quietly for certain periods of time, to wash their hands before eating and after going to the toilet and to tidy up after themselves. There are also lots of different types of role-playing that happen by imaginative children and this is encouraged by staff members and may be followed-up with an activity relevant to the topic. Each child’s progress is recorded and learning stories are frequently done on each child which are then put into a book for the parents to read and take home at any time. Our extended session from 11.45am to 12.45pm for 3 ½ yr olds and up is dedicated to preparing the child for school. They learn how to hold a pencil correctly, how to write their name and the basics of ABC’s, numbers and colours recognition, and many different topics that are relevant to their age and extend their knowledge. FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK Kia ora Year 9 Ski Trip Last week a group of year nine students participated in an outdoor education programme at Wanaka involving snow based activities. Thanks to Mr Cambridge, plus parental helpers, who managed the organisation plus operation of this event. Sports Tour Last Thursday we farewelled the Australian Sport Tour group at a special assembly, where their continual commitment, dedication and perseverance to the year long project was recognised. This group are currently on tour and will return next Thursday evening. On Monday we received an email from an ex student who is currently living in Australia. The email reads: I am an ex Tokomairiro student from some 20 plus years ago, and have lived in Australia for 10 years now. I had great pleasure in attending a netball and rugby match this morning on the Gold Coast between Tokomairiro students and AB Paterson College - the first of the matches on Tokomairiro's sports tour. Although Tokomairiro did not win the netball, I was really impressed with the sportsmanship and behaviour of the netball girls, and was really proud to be one of a large number of Tokomairiro supporters (there were more supporters, in fact, than locals cheering for the opposition!). I then watched the rugby, and felt great pride, especially when the boys did such an enthusiastic and emotional haka. Tokomairiro did win its rugby match, and demonstrated the same sportsmanship and respect for their opposition. I felt it was necessary to send some positive feedback on all these young students and their teachers/parents/supporters - they have done their school proud.

HABIT OF MIND Being able to have the disposition to be prepared to remain a continuous learner is a habit of mind that applies to all of us no matter how old we are. Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young. Henry Ford

NZQA FEES In March, all senior students were given information regarding entries for NCEA and the fees which are due to be paid to the school office. The school deadline for payment is Friday 30 July. If the fees have not yet been paid, please make arrangements to make the payment before Friday. Students have been told that financial assistance is

available. The categories for financial assistance are: - if they have siblings who are also sitting NCEA qualifications this

year, even if they are at a different school - the family has a community services card, or their income is

below the threshold that would qualify them for a community services card.

- a family member is on a benefit. If you would like to know more about financial assistance, or paying NZQA fees, please contact the Deputy Principal, Mr Wright.

The 25th September 2010 at Memorial Park Stadium Mosgiel, Mejiro Gym Milton New Zealand in association with Canteen proudly present a corporate Fight for Life Charity Kickboxing Event, governed by the International Sport and Kickboxing Association recognised by IOC. It has the goal to raise funds for children in the region living with cancer. It’s where local male and female contenders from Dunedin, Milton, Invercargill and Christchurch go ahead. Memorial Park Stadium Mosgiel will be transformed to give guests an atmosphere expected at a major event with hopefully over 300 people enjoying entertainment in the ultimate corporate fight night. We like to invite businesses to bring their clients or to get a group of your best mates together for a night of action, glamour and entertainment by booking a corporate table, ringside seat or grand stand seat The main event will be the Official National Pro Title Middle weight ISKA, and I expect to see a few surprises. We hope that people want to be part of the red carpet, glitz and glam of a corporate fight night, so we can create as much funding for CANTEEN. The ringside VIP Tables for 8 guests are $1 200 includes served drinks and buffet. (Reward your best clients or friends with the best seats in the house, only 2 metres from the ringside!) The ringside experience Tables for 6 guests are $750 includes served drinks and platter snacks. Ringside seats: $45 Grand Stand Seats $35 Don't hesitate to contact us and again thanks a lot for your supportive response. To book or e-mail phone: 027 365 9531 or email [email protected]

On Tuesday our winter sports was postponed because of bad weather. Winter Sports is when all of the senior classes go outside to do winter sports. There are ten teams and each team has a team leader and six other players. There are five different types of sports. They are Hockey, Miniball, Soccer, Netball and Indoor Bowls. The teams will have two weeks at each activity then they will move on to the next sport on the list. It is all about learning how to play new sports and not a competition. They will be all played at the Milton Primary School grounds. Miss Waide, Miss Byrnes, Mrs Robinson, Mr Freeman and the Indoor Bowls Association will be helping us with these activities. We are all very excited about doing these sports and we all hope that it won’t be postponed again and the sun will be shining next week!

Milton Kindergarten News Last week the children had a wonderful time learning about the different type of birds that lived in the trees behind the kindergarten. They made peanut butter and birdseed pinecones and bird puddings to feed the birds. Armed with binoculars and camouflaged they observed and identified the different species of birds. Delighted to discover not only were there Wax Eyes and Sparrows there were also Tui’s and Fantails in the trees too. This learning has incorporated literacy, numeracy, science, technology, papatuanuku and socialization

Toko Under 11’s vs Valley (Toko Won 49-5). Player of the Day – Caleb Hayes Toko Under 13’s vs Clutha. Senior Result Results 24/072010 Toko played Clutha on a sunny afternoon in Balclutha. Toko opened the scoring after sustained pressure in the 5th minute with a penalty to B Frost. In the 14th minute Clutha scored wide out to lead 5-3. In the 19th minute Clutha breaks out of their half with some inter passing between forwards, break the defensive line in the centres and score 12-3. 27th minute Clutha breaks the line again and run away to score 17-3. Just before the break for halftime Toko gets close to scoring, from the following lineout. J Perry steals Clutha lineout ball. It is moved to the right hand side of the field where Toko gain a penalty. They took a quick tap and M Lyon crashes over for the try unconverted 17-8 at the break. Nine minutes into the second spell Clutha backs get on the outside of their man they race away and score 24-8. After 34 minutes a Clutha player chips the ball, then is clearly over the sideline when catching the ball. It is missed by the touch judge and scores under the posts 31-8 which was the final score. Toko seemed to lack the intensity it had played within the recent weeks and its own mistakes and a lack of continuity in the backs cost them any chance of a win. With a young team developing we look forward to seeing the players back next season where they can continue their development. The season is now over for the Premiers and the Club would like to thank the players, coaches and management for their efforts. Player of the day; S Scott. U14s drew 24 all with St Kevin’s 'Great Game Boys'. U 16s and U18s did not play due to school sports tour.

End of Season Function Friday 13th August, “keep this
