1 Samuel 4:1-2

Thus the word of Samuel came to allIsrael. Now Israel went out to meet the

Philistines in battle and camped beside

Ebenezer while the Philistines camped in

Aphek.

And the Philistines drew up in battle

array to meet Israel. When the battle

spread, Israel was defeated before the

Philistines who killed about four thousand

men on the battlefield.

When the people came into thecamp, the elders of Israel said, Why has

the Lord defeated us today before the

Philistines? Let us take to ourselves from

Shiloh the ark of the covenant of the

Lord, that it may come among us and

deliver us from the power of our

enemies.

So the people sent to Shiloh andfrom there they carried the ark of the

covenant of the Lord of hosts who sits

above the cherubim; and the two sons of

Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there

with the ark of the covenant of God.

Israel, because the ark of God was

Benjamin was taken by lo t .

the son of K ish was taken; bu t when

they looked for him , he cou ld no t be

found.

Therefore he inquired fu rther ofthe Lord, Has the man come here

yet? So the Lord said, Behold, he

is hiding himself by the baggage.

So they ran and took him from

there, and when he stood among the

people, he was tal ler than any o f the

And Samuel said to al l thepeople, Do you see him whom the

Lo rd has chosen? Surely there is no

one like him among all the people.

And Saul also went to h is houseat Gibeah; and the valiant men whose

hearts God had touched went w i th

him.

But certain worth less men said,

How can this one deliver us? And

they despised h im and did not br ing

him any present. But he kept si lent .

Now Nahash the Ammon i te cameup and besieged Jabesh -gi lead; and

all the men o f Jabesh said to Nahash ,

Make a covenant with us and we will

serve you.

But Nahash the Ammon i te saidto them, I will make it with you on

th is condi t ion, that I w i ll gouge ou t

the r ight eye of every one of you, thus

I will make it a reproach on all Israel.

And the elders of Jabesh said to

him, Let us alone for seven days,

that we may send messengers

throughout the terr i tory of Israel .

Then, i f there is no one to del iver us ,

we will come out to you.

punishment againstwicked Gibeah.

Jabesh-gilead isbesieged and asks for

help from Israel.

Benjamin becomes theobject of attack.

word s, and he became very angry .

And he took a yoke of oxen and cutthem in p ieces, and sent them through-

ou t the terr i tory of Israel by the hand of

messengers, saying, Whoever does not

come ou t after Sau l and after Samuel, so

shall it be done to his oxen. Then the

dread of the Lord fel l on the people, and

they came ou t as one man.

Then Samuel said to the people,Come and let us go to Gilgal and renew

the kingdom there.

So al l the peop le went to Gilgal, andthere they made Saul k ing before the

Lord in Gilgal. There they also offered

sacr i f ices of peace offer ing s before the

Lo rd; and there Saul and al l the men o f

Is rael rejoiced greatly .

Davids Anointing

Then Samuel took the horn of oiland anointed him in the midst of his

brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came

mightily upon David from that day

forward. And Samuel arose and went toRamah. (1 Samuel 16:13).

David Jesus

The Lord instructed Samuel toanoint one who would berevealed.

The Lord instructed John theBaptist that One who hewould anoint would be

Messiah.

Samuel anointed David with

oil.

John baptized Jesus with

water.

At this anointing, the Spirit ofthe Lord came mightily uponDavid.

As He came out of the water,the Spirit descended uponJesus in the form of a dove.

In both cases, following the anointing there was no immediatemovement toward kingship. The promise continued to beunrealized for a long period.

And the king said to her, Do notbe afraid; but what do you see? And

the woman said to Saul, I see a divine

being [Eloh im] com ing up out of the

earth.

And he said to her, What is his

form? And she said, An old man is

coming up, and he is wrapped with arobe. And Saul knew that it was

Samuel, and he bowed with his face to

the ground and did homage.

1 Samuel 28:18-19As you did not obey the Lord and

did no t execute His f ierce wrath o f

Amalek, so the Lo rd has done this th ing

to you th is day.

Moreover the Lo rd w i l l also g ive

over Israel along w ith you in to the

hands o f the Phi l ist ines, therefore

tomo rrow you and your sons wi l l bew ith me. Indeed the Lo rd wi l l give over

the army o f Israel into the hands o f the

Philistines!
