4-H/FFA Vegetable & Flower Gardening General Rules:

Deadline for entries June 1 on suitable forms.

FFA members living in Lucas County may participate.

Judging follows Junior Fair guidelines.

Members need not be present for judging.

Each exhibit must have a completed exhibit card.

Engineering projects are to be made under supervision of Career Tech teacher.

Crop projects are to be part of student's experience program. Sr. Division 14-19 years of age as of January 1 Jr. Division 8-13 years of age as of January 1 Cloverbuds 5-7 years of age, may participate in any project based on participation only. 4-H Gardening

1. Check in one hour before judging. Please check date, day and me listed under each specific project in the 4-H Vegetable and Flower Division you are entering. Division winners will be announced after each judging is completed.

2. Project books must be completed and accompany project to be judged and displayed. 3. Exhibits will be displayed through Sunday at 8:00 pm or forfeiture of premiums may result. 4. The judges' decisions are final. 4-H members arriving after their official judging time may not

be considered for trophies and awards. 5. Self-Determined gardening projects should be entered in a class that most nearly fits the work

completed. Special time for judging can also be arranged. 6. Judging schedule may be adjusted due to large enrollment or other reasons make it necessary. 7. Projects may be disqualified if guidelines not followed specifically under the different project

listings, the contestant will be disqualified and not considered for top prize awards. 8. All exhibits must be worthy to receive top honor recognition. 9. Questions call Linda Rossler, 419.260.4299.

General Rules: Only one entry per individual exhibitor. Entry must be freestanding. Height of each entry must not exceed 6' nor be below 3'. Width must not exceed 6'. Entry must consist of a single scarecrow with no multiple characters. Scarecrow must have a gardening theme and have something to do with gardening. Please note: Scarecrows should be loveable, mischievous, and humorous; NOT frightening.

Sunflower Contest

Judging: Wednesday at 10:00 am Arrival time: Project check in one hour before judging General Rules:

1. Grow any variety, color, or size of sunflower you like. 2. This will be a fun contest, so let's see what you can do with a sunflower seed. 3. Bring the head only to the fair for judging along with a glass container for water. 4. Let's see which one the judge likes best.

FFA/4-H Tallest Corn Stalk Contest

Judging: Wednesday at 10:00 am Arrival time: Project check in one hour before judging General Rules:

1. You may get a corn stalk from a farmer's field (with permission) or grow your own. Growing your own gives you an opportunity to nurture and fertilize anyway you choose.

2. Stalk must have a root ball. The root ball must be in a 5-gallon or similar container that does not leak so the stalk can be watered.

3. Measurement will be from the top of the root ball to the tallest part of the stalk or tassel will be measured.

Arrangement Contest on the Spot Flower Arranging Activity

Clinic: Friday at 10am Contest: Friday at 11am **NOTE THIS CONTEST IS FRIDAY** - Exhibitor will make an arrangement of garden cut annual flowers. The 4-H Garden Division will furnish flowers and container. Exhibitor must bring scissors. The arrangement and the exhibitor will be critique judged in the presence of a judge. There will be a 15 minute time limit. Contest will start at 11:00 am. *There will be a clinic (FREE) open to the public on how to do arrange fresh flowers. Adults may have an opportunity to participate if enough materials are available.

Guidelines for Flower Judging: 1. Uniformity: All specimens should be uniform in size, shape, and color. An exhibit that includes

four average sized specimens and an exceponal specimen will not score as high as five average specimens.

2. Freedom From Defects: Specimens selected for exhibits should be free from defects such as insect injury, disease, growth cracks, yellowing, and wilting.

3. Maturity: All flowers should be at the best stage for immediate displaying when they are exhibited. Under-mature or over-mature specimens are not desirable.

4. Size: Average sized specimens rank higher than extremely large or extremely small specimens. 5. True to Variety Name: Each specimen should be true to the name and characteristics of the

variety being displayed. 6. Cleanliness: All specimens should be clean. Remove yellow or dead leaves and make sure all

soil has been removed from stems and leaves. 7. Arrangement of Flowers: Exhibitors can add to the attractiveness of their exhibit by arranging

their flowers neatly in the containers being used.

Potted Planter

Judging: Wednesday at 2:00 pm. Arrival time: Both Junior and Senior Potted Planters may be delivered to the Junior Fair Gardening area on Wednesday morning before 1pm. General Rules:

1. Planters must include 3 or more different specimens of plants in one container. 2. Plants must have been growing in a container for at least 2 months; showing strong root

development and in bloom, except where noted. 3. Planters must have been cared for by 4-H/FFA participants. 4. Any suitable container may be used. 5. Common name of plants must be written on back of exhibitor tag. 6. Junior and Senior Champion Potted Planters are to be auctioned at the Livestock Sale on Friday

with 10% of earnings to the Garden Division.

2. Plants should have been growing in container for at least two months and show strong root development.

3. 4-H participant must have cared for plants. 4. Common name of plant must be written on the back of entry tag. 5. A Best of Class will be awarded and then a Grand Champion selected. 6. Junior and Senior Champion Potted Planters are to be auctioned at the Livestock Sale on Friday

670 Canning and Freezing Explore water bath canning and freezing home preservation

methods with this interesting and informative project. (Pressure canning is not included.) Learn how pH determines which canning methods to use, become familiar with canning equipment, learn when fruits and vegetables are in season and preserve product using freezing method. The last activity is an easy, step-by-step guide to water bath canning your own applesauce! Members must have access to a current, reliable home food preservation guidebook.

671 How Does Your Garden Grow? This beginning-level project is designed for youth with limited or no experience in flower gardening;/. Youth are required to complete five activities that guide decision-making and preparation of a flower garden, either in the ground or in containers. In the second year, youth should use a new project book to document decisions for a new and different garden.

691 – Vegetable Garden I Exhibit one plate of vegetables – four (4) kinds of vegetables.

Select two (2) specimens of each vegetable exhibited. Also exhibit a poster, large enough for the public to see, on one of the following topics: Plant Life Cycles, Planning and Designing Your Vegetable Garden, Planning Your Vegetable Garden or Composting. A written report about your poster may be included with your poster if you would like to add to your project.

692 – Vegetable Gardening II – Growing with the Seasons. Exhibit three (3) vegetables for

each growing season: cool season, warm season, cold tolerant season. Select two (2) specimens of each vegetable variety exhibited. Plates will be provided. Know the planning section of the project book (Steps 1-7) and be able to answer question on each section. Become involved in at least one organized gardening activity within your 4-H club; bringing a poster and written report for judging signed by your 4-H adviser (Example: a speech or demo) Maintain a minimum garden space of 225 sq .

4-H/FFA Horticultural Floriculture Exhibits Judging: Monday at 4:00 pm Arrival time: Exhibits must be in place by Noon on Monday, and remain through Sunday. General Rules:

1. Each exhibitor must be an FFA member or in an educational Program. 2. Exhibitors may enter each or all categories, but only once per category. Exception: Classes FG-8

A and B unlimited entries; may enter more than once as long as entry is a different variety, cultivar or species.

3. Exhibitors must grow or design own exhibit. a. Summer Student Category (Jr. in Horticultural Summer Program): grown plant in one month. b. All other students: grow own exhibit for three months and grown in containers at least one month.

4. Exhibitors must submit Junior Fair Entry Form listing all classes and categories she/she is planning to enter. Must supply and construct their own exhibit. Entry forms provided by instructors.

2. Use appropriate landscape plan symbols for types of plants and materials used. 3. Use plants suitable for Ohio climate unless otherwise indicated. 4. All plants are to be labeled with their botanical or common names. 5. Design will be judged on legibility, neatness, suitability or material composion, etc.

LD2 – Residential Property Design A landscape design for a residential property at least 60”by120”. General Rules:

1. All plants must be drawn to scale 1/8” equals 1' or 1/32” equals 1'. 2. Plants must include a top view; side view (elevation) is optional. 3. Use appropriate landscape plan symbols for types of plants, materials used and buildings. 4. A list of plants (botanical or common names) used must be included giving information as to

number of plants, size, root description (ball and burlap, bare root or potted) and estimate of

FFA Lawn/Garden Woodworking Projects Construct any woodworking project that is associated with lawn/landscaping/gardening. Class 1 - Small project - costing less than $10.00 in cost to make. Class 2 - Medium project - costing $10.01 - $50.00 to make. Class 3 - Large project - costing $50.01 - $100.00 to make. Class 4 - X Large project - costing over $100.01 to make. FFA Outdoor Lighting Project Construct a mounted outdoor lighting display. Project must include light fixtures, transformer and wiring All proper connections must be shown. FFA Irrigation Project Construct a mini irrigation system. The system must include valves, irrigation heads, manifold and piping. Proper connections must be shown. FFA Landscape Model Construct any scaled model of a landscape related project. This can I include but not limited to a deck, building, golf course hole(s), etc. FFA Arc Welding Project This project must consist of three arc welds. There must be a bu weld, lap weld and a tee weld. All three must be on separate 3” long pieces of steel and be attached to one single piece of wood for display. FFA Wire Welding Project This project must consist of three wire welds. There must be a bu weld, lap weld and a tee weld. All three must be on separate 3” long pieces of steel and be attached to one single piece of wood for display. FFA Tap Block Project Judging This tap block will be a 1/2” thick bar of aluminum that is 6” long and 2” wide with a 1/4”, 5/16”, 3/8”, 7/16” and a 1/2” course and fine threaded holes tapped and labeled. FFA Alternative Energy Self Determined Project Any FFA member can exhibit one or more projects relating to and/or exploring the alternative energy industry. These projects can include but are not limited to solar, wind and bio mass energy. These projects could be reports with display boards, demonstration boards, photo boards or working models or any combination thereof. FFA Small Animal Self Determination Project Any FFA member can exhibit one or more projects related to small animal care. These projects can be reports with display boards, demonstration boards, or photo boards showing care of, the life cycle of or any other information relating to small animals. Guidelines for Vegetable Judging Uniformity – All specimens should be uniform in size, shape and color. An exhibit that includes

In general, the size to exhibit should be determined by the size most acceptable to consumers unless the class is for large specimens. Cleanliness – All specimens should be clean. Use a so cloth or a so brush for this purpose. Vegetables should not be washed unless necessary to remove dirt. 6. True to Variety Name – Each specimen selected should be true to the name and characteriscs of the variety being displayed. Arrangements on the Plate – Exhibitors can add to the aracveness of their exhibit by arranging the specimens neatly on the plate. Exhibit one marigold plant grown in one gallon or smaller size container. If container is larger than one gallon exhibit may not be eligible for top awards. MCB - Cloverbud

1. Project Divisions, (Senior: 14-18 years of age and Junior: 8-13 years of age, Clover Bud: 7-8 years of age not in the 3rd grade, as of January 1, current year), or divisions may be determined by the number of project entries and/or at judging time.

2. Note: Clover Buds - ages 7-8 take Project #631 Only, NOT #751 and are judged on that project. 3. Each member will bring their completed archery project for judging to the designated location

and time on the announced day of judging. 4. Each member to be judged must exhibit a poster, a completed project book and their archery

notebook/scrapbook annually. 5. Poster Size: Tri-Fold Poster Board Required - (48” x 36” max; or 40” x 28” min) – No Flat Posters 6. No actual archery arrow tips/points will be exhibited as part of any project poster or display 7. No actual arrow longer than 6”may be displayed on any poster or project. NO arrowTips or

Points Allowed. 8. Each 4-H member enrolled in project may enter only one project entry per year. 9. Each 4-H member must be present for judging and interviewed by the judge in order to be

considered for Project Grade, Top County Awards and/or State Fair Delegate(s) – one delegate per Senior and Junior divisions, to be determined by the age of the 4-H youth.

10. 4-H Members and Clover Buds taking Archery Projects #631 or #751 will be interviewed and evaluated on their knowledge of elements, principles and techniques used in archery, along with their skills and abilities as seen in their exhibit and their understanding and knowledge through their project work.

11. All archery project posters, project books and notebooks/scrapbooks will remain on display in the archery booth during the week of Fair.
