Every diaphragm is a tailor-made solution

There is a difference whether a

diaphragm is used for control,

switching, accumulation or

pumping. In addition, the ope-

rating conditions and medium

have a direct impact on the de-

sign of a functional diaphragm

and the housing. At the initial

design stage it is already

necessary to take account ofdesign-related outline conditi-

ons such as

■ pressurisation on one or both

sides

■ ratio stroke to diameter

■ alteration of effective diame-

ter via the stroke

■ need for an insert and/or

covering using reinforcement

material.

For this reason we jointly de-

velop every diaphragm with you exactly in accordance with

the defined function.

In addition, we optimise the

sealing bead for clamping. The

type of pressurisation also has

a major impact on whether

fabric reinforcement is incorpo-

rated in the diaphragm and in

what manner.

Calculated functionalreliability We use these basic parameters

to proceed with calculation,

simulation and detail optimisa-

tion. For the FEM calculations

we have our own material

models for elastomers.

With single-sided pressurisation a fabric reinforcement is positioned differently

in the diaphragm structure than with pressurisation on both sides.

Automated FEM calculations

Strategic reinforcementIn particular the mechanical

properties of a diaphragm can

be optimised with fabric and

other new types of reinforce-

ment materials. To cater for the

operating parameters to opti-

mum effect when selecting the

appropriate reinforcement, we

use fabric reinforcement made

of polyester, polyamide andaromatic polyamide.

The location and position of the

reinforcement fabric is matched

to the operating conditions not

only via the diameter of the

diaphragm but also within the

layer structure. This means that

a reinforcement is always posi-

tioned where it has the greatest

effect on the long-term resi-

stance and life cycle costs of

your product.

Optimum protectionthrough PTFE foilcoveringFor aggressive media as often

occur with diaphragm pumps

PTFE foil coverings permanently

fixed to the diaphragm or modi-

fied PTFE foil coverings have

proved to be highly effective for

shielding. With foils made of

Pumping hydrochloric acid,

control with compressed air or

accumulation involving hydrau-

lic media – every diaphragm

must be exactly tailored to the

chemical, thermal and mechani-

cal stresses. Selection of the

elastomers depends on this.

But sealing at the clamping

area, processability, the controlprecision of the diaphragms or

permeation behaviour are also

criteria for the selection of

materials.

Virtually all of the standard

elastomers available today can

be used for the development of

your diaphragms e. g. NBR,

CR, VMQ and EPDM as well ashigh-performance elastomers

such as IIR, ECO, FKM, CSM,

HNBR, FVMQ or Simriz®

(FFKM). With over 400 blends,

Simrit offers the largest basis

for the strategic development of

diaphragms in the world.

These diaphragm materials of

course comply with the stan-

dards governing the relevant

application areas such as FDA,

BGA (German Federal HealthOffice), KTW, WRc, ACS,

NSF International or they have

approval via OEM customers.

Controlled diaphragm productionto validation of components

Our outstanding experience in

the manufacture of diaphragms

of any diameter includes all

production steps: weighing

of the mixing components,

creation of the raw mixture,

production of blanks, pretreat-

ment of the carrier parts, deep-

drawing of fabrics, vulcanisa-

tion of diaphragms and also

the removal of burrs and sur-face treatment.

For elastomer processing

we used both compression

moulding (CM) and injection

moulding (IM). The CM process

has proved to be an ideal

production platform particularly

for diaphragms plus fabric,

foil and insert while IM is

suitable when manufacturing

diaphragms made solely of

elastomer or including a metalsection.

Diaphragms are manufactured in diameters ranging from a few millimetres to almost

1 metre in size. The smallest diaphragm produced to date has an outer diameter of

5.4mm with a vulcanised metal section 1.8 mm in diameter.



We also coordinate the shaping

process to the respective requi-

rement profiles. At our plant

diaphragms are shaped by

punching, cutting, water jetcutting as well as laser beam

cutting, as shown here, to

ensure extremely precise dia-

phragm edges.

Our production processes are

exactly matched to your requi-

rements.

Test rigs for testingcomponentsFollowing development and ma-

nufacture the overall process is

completed with the validationof diaphragms. We subject dia-

phragms to rigorous testing on

your unit according to specified

test parameters.

Climatic cabinets are also

available to ensure that testing

corresponds to the actual ope-

rating conditions. This not only

includes low-temperature (down

to –40°C) and high-tempera-ture behaviour (+220°C) but

also the switching performance

of diaphragms. Service life

tests using different media and

variable switching cycles are

possible as well. If wished,

comprehensive validation docu-

mentation detailing the qualities

of the diaphragms in your spe-

cific unit can also be provided.

conveys a fluid from a defined
