Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital extends sincere thanks to the Montgomery County Students Automotive Trades Foundation for this extraordinary gift.

The Montgomery County Students Automotive Trades Foundation, Inc. (MCSATF) has selected Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital as the recipient of a wheelchair-accessible van, complete with a hydraulic lift, for its yearly Gift Vehicle Donation!

Report to DonorsThank You for Your Many Gifts to Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital As a nonpro t organization, Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital depends on the generous and faithful gifts of friends and family. We appreciate our leaders, physicians, co-workers, volunteers and friends who give time, energy, expertise and monetary gifts to fuel the engines of program development and other mission-related needs. Again this year, Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital gratefully received contributions from individuals who supported our ongoing work with gifts to the Patient Equipment Fund, which purchases equipment used at the hospital to assist our patients with their recovery and the Patient Assistance Fund, which provides assistance for medication, equipment or transportation for patients in need. Generous friends also contributed toward Adventist Rehab’s Area of Greatest Need. We were also very pleased this year to launch two new funds: the Excellence in Patient Care Fund, which supports employee education for superior patient care and customer service and Faith Based Programs which supports our mission of demonstrating God’s care by improving the health of people and communities through a ministry of physical, mental and spiritual healing. Every donation makes a difference. By making a gift you help us maintain outstanding programs and services and enable us to keep pace with the latest technology and equipment for the highest quality rehabilitation care. Grateful Patient ProgramOur patients often tell us how Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital staff members have

changed their lives and that they wish to express appreciation for the care they received. By Hospital policy, our staff members may not accept money or gifts from our patients and their families. For that reason, we offer the Grateful Patient Program.

This program offers an opportunity for you, your family or friends to make tax-deductible gifts that help Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital maintain outstanding patient services, keep pace with the latest advances in technology and equipment, provide opportunities for staff education and support our mission as a faith based organization.

To make a contribution or to learn more about the Grateful Patient Program, please contact the development department at 240-864-6018. You can also make a gift online at www.adventistrehab.com.

Certi ed Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS)

1.) What is a CBIS certi cation and why is it important?Academy of Certi ed Brain Injury Specialists (ACBIS) currently offers Certi cation of Brain Injury Specialists (CBIS). The program is governed by the Academy of Certi ed Brain Injury Specialists (ACBIS) and is admin-istered by the Brain Injury Association of America in Vienna, Virginia. The training and certi cation exam are based on the The Essential Brain Injury Guide and are intended for paraprofessionals and professionals at all levels who want a strong foundation in the best practices in brain injury rehabilitation.

2.) What is the process for certi cation? At this level, applicants attend a training to prepare them to take the certi cation examination. Applicants may also elect to prepare for the exam through self-study. To obtain CBIS, candidates must complete the required work experience and training and must pass (80% or higher) a national written examination.

3.) Once you become certi ed, what does it mean?Certi cation as a Brain Injury Specialist provides recognition of an individual’s advanced training and work experience in brain injury services. The certi ca-tion does not ensure that an individual is well-suited for employment. Rather, the completion of the certi cation process demonstrates the certi cant’s commitment to learn about brain injury rehabilitation and to maintain that knowledge through continuing education. The certi cation also shows that the certi cant is dedicated to providing improved quality of care for persons with brain injuries.

4.) How does this certi cation impact our hospital? Individuals with this type of certi cation are an invalu-able resource for all our staff when working with patients who have a brain injury. They act as mentors, educators, and program developers to improve the quality of care for these patients. This in turn allows ARHM to create a safe, structured environment that provides constant and consistent quality care.

Certi ed Rehabilitation Registered Nurse (CRRN)1.) What is a CRRN certi cation and why is it important? The Certi ed Rehabilitation Registered Nurse (CRRN) certi -cation is provided by the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses (ARN), and validates that a Registered Nurse has specialized knowledge in the eld of Rehabilitation.

Research has shown that hospitals with more specialty-certi ed nurses actually provide better care: complication rates are lower and lengths of stay are shorter. Obtaining the CRRN shows that a nurse is committed to the specialty and to being a life-long learner, since the recerti cation process requires proof of at least 60 hours of continuing education activities.

Specialty certi cation is also an important component of pre-paring for a Magnet application: Magnet hospitals on average have about 20% of their nurses specialty-certi ed.

2.) What is the process for certi cation? The CRRN exam is offered twice a year, in June and Decem-ber. It has 150 randomly selected questions which are theory and science-based, but worded in such a way that they re-semble real-life clinical situations. During the exam, the nurse must select the best course of action for each situation, draw-ing both on his/her studies and his/her clinical experience. For this reason, a nurse must work in the area of rehabilitation for a minimum of 2 years before he/she can sit for the exam.

3.) Once you become certi ed, what does it mean? Not only does the CRRN better prepare you for your clinical role, but it prepares you to function in a larger professional role: CRRNs understand laws, regulations and ethics related to their specialty, and are better prepared to advocate for their patients at the local, state and national levels. They can seamlessly get involved in lobbying work and rub shoulders with state and national leaders, and bring valuable insights straight from the bedside. They have a knowledge base in performance improvement and team dynamics which pre-pares them to contribute on hospital teams and committees.

4.) How does this certi cation impact our hospital? We are well on our way to becoming the best place to get Re-habilitation Nursing in the entire region, and having our nurses obtain the CRRN will be solid proof of that. Having this mark of excellence is very convincing to potential patients who are looking for the best care, to donors who want to invest in a worthwhile cause, and to Magnet surveyors.

We are pleased to announce the addition of Matthew Brown, MD to our team of physiatrists at Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital of Maryland! We would like to take this opportunity to welcome him to our facility.

“My focus here is on stroke patients.

I also have a strong interest in sports medicine and back pain patients,” Dr. Brown explains. “My experience here has been great. The camaraderie and teamwork are what stand out to me the most. Everyone is working hard to better the lives of our patients and that is a very gratifying feeling.”

Outside of the hospital, Dr. Brown enjoys a wide variety of activities including weightlifting and playing tennis. He is also the proud father of two children, a 4 year-old son named Mason and a 1 year-old daughter named Madison. Dr.Brown brings a wealth of experience to our program. He received his undergraduate degree in Psychology from University of Washington and went on to receive his medical degree at Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed an internal medicine internship at Medical College of Virginia. He is currently a member of American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Association of Academic Physiatrists, Physiatric Association of Spine, Sports, and Occupational Rehabilitation. Currently, Dr. Brown is working on a presentation at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital regarding the care of back pain patients.

Introducing:Dr. Matthew Brown, Physiatrist

Physiatrists, or rehabilitation physicians, are medical doctors who are:i Experts at diagnosing and treating pain

i Restore maximum function lost through injury, illness or disabling conditions

i Treat the whole person, not just the problem area

i Lead a team of medical professionals

i Provide non-surgical treatments

i Explain your medical problems and treatment plan

i Work not only on treatment but also prevention

Rehabilitation physicians are nerve, muscle, and bone experts who treat injuries or illnesses that affect how you move. Rehabilitation physicians have completed training in the medical specialty physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R).

Rehabilitation physicians treat a wide range of problems from sore shoulders to spinal cord injuries. Their goal is to decrease pain and enhance performance without surgery. Rehabilitation physicians take the time needed to accurately pinpoint the source of an ailment. They then design a treatment plan that can be carried out by the patients themselves or with the help of the rehabilitation physician’s medical team. This medical team might include other physicians and health professionals, such as neurologists, orthopedic surgeons, and physical therapists. By providing an appropriate treatment plan, rehabilitation physicians help patients stay as active as possible at any age. Their broad medical expertise allows them to treat disabling conditions throughout a person’s lifetime.

4TH ANNUAL TOURNAMENT A SUCCESS!

Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital, in collaboration with the Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Network, sponsored the Fourth Annual Adventist Knights Tournament at the Discovery Sports Center in Germantown this October.

We commend the players and offer thanks to everyone who helped make this exciting tournament happen: Adventist Rehab staff, team members and the many supporters who so generously contributed their time, services and sponsorship toward the success of this event.

Clinical Educator, Dina Madrid and Diane Olechna, Director of Nursing.

“Our mother, Bessie Bezantakos, spent 30 days at your facility…During that time she saw many people come and go through your doors. For most people, it was a quick intensive stay, and then they were off to continue their rehabilitation, they and their families being better prepared to face their new life challenges.

Your facility was singularly focused on her healing, safety, and independence and we were impressed by the quality and dedication at every level. This letter is to thank your entire organization for being there during our biggest life crisis and helping us in putting our mother’s and our lives back together. It is with profound gratitude that
