    RTC is primarilyresponsible for conduct-

    ing the initial Navy orien-tation and training of newrecruits. The command iscommonly referred to asboot camp or recruittraining.

    Boot camp is approxi-mately eight weeks, andall enlistees into the U.S.Navy begin their careersat the command. Trainingincludes physical fitness,seamanship, firearmsfamiliarization, firefight-ing and shipboard dam-age control, lessons inNavy heritage and corevalues, teamwork and

    discipline.RTC Great Lakes is the

    Navys only basic traininglocation, and is known

    as the Quarterdeckof the Navy.Today, approximately39,000 recruits graduateannually from RTC andbegin their Navy careers.Rear Adm. Stephen Evansand his NSTC staff areheadquartered in Building1; the historic clock tower

    building on Naval StationGreat Lakes. NSTC over-sees 98 percent of ini-tial officer and enlistedaccessions training for theNavy.

    NSTC also oversees theNaval Reserve OfficersTraining Corps (NROTC)at more than 160 collegesand universities, OfficerTraining Command atNaval Station Newport,Rhode Island, and NavyJunior Reserve OfficersTraining Corps (NJROTC)and Navy NationalDefense Cadet Corps

    (NNDCC) citizenshipdevelopment programsat more than 600 highschools worldwide.

    Mystic Museum of Art opens new exhibitMYSTIC, Conn. The

    Mystic Museum of Art(MMA) is pleased tolaunch its new muse-um designation inconjunction with theopening of its new-est exhibition, anunprecedented showof drawings by notableAmerican artists.

    Drawn from aPrivate Collection:Works on Paper from1880-2009, opensJan. 15 in conjunc-tion with the unveil-ing of MMAs refur-bished Liebig Gallery.Generously loaned bya private collector,this exhibition featuresdrawings by renownedAmerican artists suchas Georgia OKeeffe,Winslow Homer,Edward Hopper, KaraWalker, and FredWilson among oth-ers. Ranging in date

    from 1880 2009, theworks present an arrayof subjects and stylesin the development ofthe drawing mediumin American art. Thiswill be the first timethat MMA will exhibitworks by most of theartists included.

    Curated by ExecutiveDirector George G.King, this exhibitionmarks an importantstep in the organiza-tions efforts to renewand underscore its con-tribution to Americanart.
