CHAPTER MEETING ‐ SEPTEMBER 14, 2016
Automatic Entrance Systems
in Commercial and Industrial Projects
Description: The program will provide an overview of automatic door systems typically
designed, specified, and installed in commercial and industrial applications, with a primary focus on the most common applications with swinging doors and sliding doors. Automatic door systems can be a jumble of components to architects and specifiers who don’t specialize in this! Will Johnston, from Stanley Access Technologies, will provide an overview of these issues in this program. He will address some basic information for using swing and sliding automatic door systems and their components including activation and safety systems, layout requirements, coordination considerations with other trades, and most basic of all, meeting code require‐ments for accessibility, egress, and safety.
Learning Objectives: By the end of the program the attendee should
have a basic understanding of: Coordination considerations with other trades. Code requirements for accessibility, egress, and safety.
Layout requirements for swinging and sliding automatic doors.
The function of automatic door systems and components in‐
cluding activation and safety systems.
Speaker: Will Johnson: During his 8 years with Stanley, Will Johnston has worked as a technician, warehouse coordinator, inside sales support, and now in his current role as a Territory Manager. He covers all of DC and a portion of Central and South‐ern MD, and lives in Columbia, MD. In his free time he’s an assis‐tant coach for the Catholic University Men’s Ice Hockey team.

NOVASPEC SEPTEMBER 2016
Jesse Oak, NOVA CSI President Dear CSI Nova Members,
I hope everyone had a great summer and is well rested and ready to start back to another full year of great chapter meetings and presentations.
As many of you already know, I left my former employer after the sale of the company. After taking time off I have been trying to find a new opportunity to tackle. This has been a slower process than I expected.
Since I do not know where life will take me next, and to avoid a last minute sudden change, I tendered my resignation as Chapter President at the July work session with the Board to allow a period of transition. I would love to continue to help the Chapter in any way I can, but will be phasing out my role during this transition period.
It has been a pleasure to serve the Chapter and I hope I was able to help and contribute to its long term success. Now more than ever I am asking you to step up and contribute where you can. I have been a member for almost 20 years but only really contributed for about 10 years and have found those 10 years most rewarding.
The Chapter exist because of its members, so it is important to retain and gain new ones and find ways for everyone to be active, or as active as they can. So please let the Board know how CSI and the Chapter can help you and any thoughts or ideas you may have to cre‐ate a better membership experience. Think about what CSI does and how the organization can help expand your career. Remember, CSI is the one national professional group that brings together all of the various groups involved with the constructed environment. Owner, contractor, material manufacturer and supplier, designer, specifier, and operator.
CSI provides a great forum to share information, network, and collaborate, so stay safe and,
as I liked to say, we will talk again. This time will be my last in this forum, but I would like to
thank everyone for your support and help through the years and I wish you the best.
The Chapter will be changing significantly this coming year in the area of electronic com‐munications. It has signed an agreement with StarChapter to install its online association management software. StarChapter will change the way the Chapter communicates with the members and outside community in the future by consolidating the many different tools the Chapter has been using online, as well as helping to keep everything current and allowing access to more information than before.
StarChapter will update and change the Chapter website to be more interactive and up to date, help manage Chapter information including the newsletter and membership infor‐mation. StarChapter will also replace Eventbrite for advertising and registering the monthly meetings along with providing an integrated payment tool. Email communication with be smoother and easier, and the system will allow members the opportunity to update their own information. Remember we use the CSI National member list as the basis for contact information, so please make sure the information provided to the Institute is updated, cor‐rect, and you have not checked to block email communication. So you will start to see these changes soon as everything is setup and rolled out this fall.
The Chapter will still need volunteers to help with the process so anyone interested should let me know at [email protected] or any of the officers and board members and again thanks.
Sincerely,
