All items are needed. Food in greatest demand is spaghetti, spaghetti sauce, rice, jelly, canned fruit, soup, pancake syrup, pancake mix, and cereal. More details about our reopening will be posted soon. The Food Pantry Committee is meeting regularly to plan reopening of the Food Pantry. You can drop off food before the Masses or during regular office hours during the week. Contact Mike DeJaeger or Brian Alexander with any questions. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR HOLY FAMILY PRAYER LINE MINISTRY: The Prayer Line Ministry is a group of volunteers who use a “Phone Tree” to pass on prayer requests. There is a Day Time “Phone Tree” (for those who are available to take and make calls during the day) and a Night Time “Phone Tree” (for those who are only available in the evening). You can choose which one you would like to be on.

Here’s how our Prayer Line works: The prayer request is activated when a call is placed to the Parish Office. Then the Prayer Line Coordinator starts the Day List and the Night List. Once a call is received, the volunteer passes the name and prayer request to the next person on the “Phone Tree” list. Please note that this ministry is especially for critical situations. The name of the person to pray for can also be added to the Bulletin prayer request list.

During these uncertain times and while we are “sheltering in place” and staying home, this is a safe way to be involved in church ministry. If you are interested, please call the Parish Office (757-481-5702) and leave your name, phone number, and email address. If you are a current Prayer Line minister, please confirm that you are still interested in continuing to be a volunteer.

Please prayerfully consider being a part of this important ministry that enables miracles to happen through the power of prayer.

“Whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you receive it, and you will.”

~ Mark 11:24

“CREATION CARE CORNER:” How does a circular economy differ from a linear one and what relation does this have with climate change? A circular economy is about rethinking supply chains to minimize waste. One school of thought describes it as “designing our waste and pollution; keeping products and materials in use; and regenerating natural systems.” A linear economy, which our country runs on, takes resources, makes products, and when we tire of them or they outlive their usefulness throw them away. This model of taking, making, and tossing operates as if resources are unlimited. The circular economy makes the most of the Earth’s resources while giving back. These definitions seem to apply to the macro level. We, however, live on the micro level. So, how do these levels of operating apply to us as individuals? A linear economy turns a profit off waste. Americans threw away 4.51 pounds of trash per person per day in 2017, according to the EPA. Most of that discarded material comes from goods that are used briefly like food waste and packaging materials. As these items are replaced, they perpetuate the TAKE-MAKE-WASTE of the linear economy. Combating this model begins with re-imagining how these materials are wasted and, as found in the circular economy, keeping them in use longer. As individuals we do have control over how long we use our goods and how we repurpose them. For instance, some food waste and some paper materials can be composted, which gives them a new life as fertilizer, which enriches the soil. Recycling, reusing, and repairing accomplish the same results, keeping materials in existence.

Page 6: 1279 North Great Neck Road Virginia Beach, Virginia 23454 ... · 6/28/2020  · Monday, June 29: Saints Peter and Paul, apostles: Acts 12:1-11; Ps 34:2-9; 2 Tm 4:6-8, 17-18; Mt 16:13-19

What about those items that are not recyclable? An organization, TerraCycle, whose mission has always been to eliminate waste, is a leader in recycling the unrecyclable. This company partners with major consumer goods manufacturers to offer numerous recycling programs. The waste is sorted and reprocessed into raw materials for new product manufacturing. The company can be contacted at 1-866-967-6766 or online at terracycle.com. The waste products need to be shipped and the sender has to pay postage for most items. Information to be considered and, hopefully, made use of.
