I hope everyone had a great summer! There has been a tremendous amount of activity going on behind the scenes this summer and it is exciting. The momentum is building and it is palpable. Our lodges are building and rebuilding. Lately, it seems like I receive a new member notification just about every other day. Since June 1, I have received 25 new member notifications! This is great. It means you are all working hard to get the word out about Sons of Norway and you are succeed-ing. We gained one new member and possibly four more at the recent Summerfest held at LOV. We will have an information/membership ta-ble at Scanfest at Budd Lake on Labor Day weekend again this year.

Stop by and say hello!

We have several lodge anniversaries coming up and hope you will join in the festivities either in person or by a congratulatory note. Congratulations to:

Members of Hampton Roads SON Lodge joined Norwegian NATO families in welcoming the arrival of (Norwegian) King Harald V. The King stopped and spoke to some of the children in the group. Some lodge members pictured above arrived early and posed for a photo.

While on a Rhine and Mosul River Boat Tour members of our Lodge visited the Luxembourg Military Cemetery (Bob and Deanna Rumney, Annegrete Peterson, Synnove Quaglietta). General George Patton is buried in this cemetery, with his troops. While at the cemetery a wreath laying ceremony was conducted. All veterans were requested to attend. Bob Rumney was selected to lay the wreath. Following the wreath laying the National Anthem was played and sung by all in attendance.. Submitted by: Bob and Deanna Rumney

Savoring Some History From “Past” Lodge Luncheons

A Little Tidbit to Start With: Lodge member Michael Beck began the tradition of having lodge luncheons

back in 2011. A Big “Thank You” to Mike for such a wonderful and fruitful idea!

The Dish: The Luncheons have been a popular choice ever since with plentiful portions of good food, good

people, and good fellowship! Locations have included:

California Pizza Kitchen at Town Center, BRAVO!!, and Longhorn Steakhouse (2011); Pasta Bowl and Gus and Georges (2012); Chef’s Table, Monastery Restaurant in Norfolk, and Cypress Point Country Club (2013); Bier Garden in Portsmouth, sweDish Restaurant, Lynnhaven Fish House, and Mahi Mah’s Seafood (2014); Sal’s by Victor in Williamsburg (with Norwegians Worldwide), Kelly’s on the Locke, and Tradewinds (with Norwegians Worldwide), Mikes Place (Pub) (Leif Erikson Day at Mariners Museum in Newport News with Icelandic group) (2015); Rockefellers Restaurant, Macaroni Grill, Bubbas, Mom & Pops (and laying of wreaths at Sailor’s graves), Mangia Qui Italian Bistro, and Golden Corral (2016); Surf Rider in Chesapeake, Opus 9 in Williamsburg (with Norse Federation), Captain Groovey’s Bar & Grill in Norfolk (after laying of wreaths at Sailor’s graves), Braise’s on Virginia Beach Boulevard, and El Parian on Virginia Beach Boulevard (so far in 2017). There have also been special lunches on board the Norwegian Tall Ship, HNoMS Statsraad Lehmkuhl.

A sweet morsel from our June, 2017 luncheon at El Parian in Virginia Beach:

We Work for You

It's likely that you have one or more financial advisors working for you. Think about it. Who did you buy your life insurance from, invest with, do charitable planning with, estate planning and gifting? And how many times have you had a new advisor take over your business or the company changed hands and name? When was the last time you heard from these people? Who owns the company and where do the company profits go?

When you belong to Sons of Norway, you have a stake in the organization. Our successes are your successes. Our stability is your stability. You are an owner. As a fraternal benefit society, we give our profits back to our lodges and members.

The next time you are ready to make a move with your finances, think of Sons of Norway. We have been relating to our members for many years. Give us the opportunity to show you how we can work with you to achieve your financial goals. Although we've grown and evolved the mission we set back in the 1800s of helping each other during financial hardship hasn't changed. Call your Sons of Norway Financial Benefits Counselor and let's get to work.

“Did You Know”

The Norwegian Elkhound's Beginnings

The Norwegian Elkhound comes from Scandinavia. A skeleton of a dog very similar was found and has been dated to 4000 to 5000 BC. “When humans were living in caves and using slingshots to hunt with, the Elkhound's ancestor was around. It was used by Vikings too later on as a guard dog and hunting dog. It was capable of helping to hunt large and small prey, moose, bear, elk, wolves, mountain lions to rabbits, deer, and badger. Its role was to track down the prey and hold it and bark to let the hunters know where it was so they could come and take it down. It was bred to have a lot of stamina and would jump around the prey and bark to keep it there. In 1877 it was first shown in dog shows in Norway and has been a common fixture for hundreds of years. Interest was re-ignited after the dog shows by the Norwegian Hunters Asso-ciation and breeders started to look at establishing a breed standard.” http://www.dogbreedplus.com/dog_breeds/norwegian_elkhound.php

Duffy, a Norwegian elkhound, won the Hound group at the 141st Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York City on February 13, 2017. **For more information and to see picture of the winner, visit the website below.**
