The Last Meeting Our thanks to Nicholas Wilkinson G4HCK from the Thurrock Acorns Amateur Radio Club (TAARC) for traversing the great Thames divide to come and give us an excellent talk. Nicholas gave an account of how he first gained an interest in the hobby from his father the late G3NEG and explained how the hobby has changed along with the equipment that he has used up to the present day. He also gave an interesting account of the formation of the TAARC which is a very successful club which has grown in the short time it has been formed where we appear to be shrinking. Thanks again to Nicholas for crossing over to the other side to talk to us.

NKRS Annual Lighthouse Event No this is not our lighthouse but as you have all seen that before I thought I would use a picture of a French lighthouse taken in a small town just outside of Calais (Gravelines). This year we will be at out traditional location of Crossness lighthouse and you should all have received the email that I sent out a couple of days ago. All are welcome to come to the site whether intending to operate or not but please read the document I sent before you come. At the moment the weather forecast is showing a temperature of 19°C with light rain ! Lets hope it is wrong and the rain does not appear. Breakfast in the T Bone is recommended and I must leave the site by 5 pm because of other commitments but we are usually gone by then. We look forward to seeing you there.

I have read a number of news reports claiming that Britain’s new aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, which recently left the Rosyth dockyard, could be vulnerable to a cyber-attack as it appears to be using the outdated Windows XP operating system.

A number of reporters claimed that during a tour of the carrier, screens were spotted using what appeared to be the outdated 2001 Windows XP. It is worth considering that was the Microsoft OS that was recently targeted by the WannaCry ransomware attack that disrupted parts of the National Health Service and other companies worldwide. Even Parliament has come under cyber-attack with the accounts of about 90 MPs hacked.

In a statement it was said “The MoD can confirm that Windows XP will not be used by any onboard system when the ship becomes operational,” the spokesman added. “This also applies to HMS Prince of Wales.”

I admit it, I still use XP on some of my computers but then so do a lot of other people.

XP Lives on

Nothing to do with the above article just an impressive array of equipment for sale by one of the vendors at the War and Peace show. Page 3 of 5

That's all for this issue I hope to see some of you at the lighthouse event. Below is a New Zealand ZC1 similar to one I have sitting in my workshop awaiting refurbishment on a rainy day. All the best Dave Collings
