By Laine WelchRecycled fishing nets from Cor-

dova will soon help launch a newclothing line by Grundens, themaker of the iconic foul weathergear “built by fishermen for fisher-men for over a century.” The Cop-per River Watershed Project is“refreshing” its net recycling pro-gram underway for a decade that’sbeen backed by the Pacific MarineStates Commission. Now, the pro-gram wants to broaden its base andstand on its own, said Shae Bow-man, Watershed operations man-ager. “The vision with a newprogram is to create a self-sustain-ing recycling program that is a val-ued asset to the commercial fishingfleet. We also want to provide ahigh quality product to recyclers. And we don’t want to have to beconstantly chasing down grants and

sources of funding,” Bowman said, adding that the project has recycledover 200,000 pounds over 10 years.

Enter Nicole Baker, founder ofNet Your Problem, who since 2015has jumpstarted net recycling pro-grams across Alaska. Her work sofar has included gathering and ship-ping primarily plastic trawl nets toEurope where they are recycled intopellets for sale to makers of a myr-iad of products from skateboards tocellphone covers. “I think the gill-net fleet is pretty dialed in, butseines are made out of the sametype of plastic that gillnets are, sothose two gear types can be recy-cled together,” Baker said. A goal isto fill a 40-foot shipping containerthis summer. But changes in the re-cycling market mean that unlike be-fore, the nets must be clean andstripped before drop off.

Fish Factor

“You have to collect a reallyhigh quality product that somebodywants to buy,” Bowman explained.“We don’t want to collect some-thing that’s full of garbage andthat’s the problem we’ve been strug-gling with.  I really want to get theword out that we need to recyclenets better. Our nets coming in needto be clean and stripped of any non-nylon material – that’s the corklines, the lead lines, the hangingtwine, all that needs to be removedto increase our quality.”

European recyclers will turn theCordova nets not into pellets formaking other plastics, but into yarnfor clothing.

Enter Grundens.“Our statement as a brand is “we

are fishing,” said Mat Jackson,Grundens chief marketing officer.“We believe it’s really important touse our brand voice and strength tohelp protect and maintain healthymarine environments and to lend ahand where we can.  But at somepoint, you’ve got to just start doingit and making the process happen. And when talking with Nicole, Cor-dova became something thatseemed like a tangible opportu-nity.”

Jackson said the net recyclingproject also dovetails nicely withGrundens new clothing line.

“In 2021 we are launching a fullline of products from technical out-erwear to more lifestyle casualitems like shorts built out of“Econyl” regenerated nylon, whichis largely comprised of recycledfishing nets and has been a mainsource that Nicole has been pursu-ing in terms of shipping this gearout of Alaska and into a recyclersupply chain,” Jackson said, addingthat he believes it is “a really pow-erful package.”

“Our consumer base is commer-cial fishermen, but it also includesrecreational fishermen and deliver-ing them a product that fits theirneeds, performs at a high level, andis built from recycled material thatour core customer uses to make aliving, we just feel is an incrediblypowerful message to help put thespotlight on these efforts and hope-fully build a coalition around thisprocess,” Jackson said. “Becauseit’s going to take more than just ourbrand getting involved. This reallyhas to become an effort that thewhole industry starts to embrace.”

Bowman agrees.

“My big hope,” she said, “is thatif we can get this program to workout, it can serve as a model for othercommercial fishing communities inAlaska as they look into setting up arecycling program.”

From livestock to fruits anddairy, most U.S. food makers havesome sort of national marketingboard supported by federal and in-dustry dollars to promote their prod-ucts. Seafood could soon be amongthem. Reviving a dormant NationalSeafood Council is gaining steamamong industry members, espe-cially as Covid-19 upends markets.

About a year ago, SeafoodSource reports that the Marine Fish-eries Advisory Committee broughtup the idea to restart the council.MAFAC is a federal advisory com-

mittee to the Secretary of Com-merce and NOAA Fisheries. Sincethen, the idea has met with lots ofenthusiasm, and MAFAC hasformed an 11-member task force tomove forward.

A National Seafood Council wascreated by the U.S. Fish andSeafood Promotion Act in 1987. Itoperated for five years before run-ning out of money and becomingquietly defunct. MAFAC membersagreed that if any food could nowbenefit from more consumer educa-tion, it’s seafood. A NationalSeafood Council could help withmarketing, research, and educa-tional awareness for all U.S. fishand shellfish products, both farmedand wild. It also could improve con-sumer confidence by allaying con-cerns about seafood safety andsustainability, and highlighting itsmany proven health benefits.

The MAFAC committee’s firsttask is to define what direction apromotional council could take. An-other is checking the language in the1987 Act to make sure it is meetingthe needs of today.

The core mission would be sim-ple - to get Americans to buy and eatmore seafood.

Patron saint of salmon As Alaska’s salmon season gets

underway, it seems appropriate toacknowledge the patron saint of

salmon— Saint Kentigern of Scot-land.

Born long ago in 518, Kentigernwas the illegitimate son of a king’sdaughter. He trained as a priest at amonastery, where his sainthoodevolved around a dangerous love-triangle. Legend has it that the kingsuspected his wife of having an af-fair, because she had given one ofher favorite rings to a court favorite. The king took the ring when theman was sleeping and threw it farout into the River Clyde.

When he returned home, the kingangrily demanded that his wifeshow him the missing ring andthreatened her with death if shecould not produce it. In her misery, the queen beseeched the priestKentigern to help her. Kentigerntook a fishing rod to the spot wherethe ring had been flung into the riverand quickly caught a salmon. Amaz-ingly, upon cutting it open the ringwas found in the salmon’s belly.

The queen was able to deliver thering to her doubting husband andpeace was restored.

From the time of his death in603, Kentigern was regarded asScotland’s patron saint and thecathedral at Glasgow was built inhis honor. To this day Kentigern’sfigure and symbols, including asalmon, make up that city’s coat ofarms.

So who knows - perhaps a quickprayer to the patron saint of salmonwill lead more fish to your nets.
