SUSPECTS appeared in the Lydenburg Magistrate Court last week after the brutal attack on Mr Alan (57) and Mrs Estelle Bullen (58). They were attacked on their farm on Friday 18 September in the Badfontein area, just outside Lydenburg.A group of protestors outside the court came in their masses with Afriforum posters and posters against farm attacks. The suspects are Thapelo Ntimane, Matthew Letswalo, Berhet Mashele, Christopher Mokoena and Stanen Mphahlele.The cases opened against them includes house robbery, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm. Dit bring my by die polities korrupte kruipers. Dié wat Steve Hofmeyer kruisig oor hy die Stem sing. Of dié wat Dianne Kohler Barnard in die DA afgedank het. Hulle is tog so sensitief om almal inklusief te hou en nie te assosieer met mense wat oopkop dink en kritiek uitspreek nie. Waar die Bybel ’n bietjie kras is, word hy reggeskaaf in ’n nuwer vertaling. Of anders interpreteer by “ons moderne tyd” Wanneer die pers iets skryf, skaaf tientalle redakteurs daaraan, om te verseker dat niemand tog geaffronteer word nie. Die hele gemeenskap is vals en hang mense soos Kohler Barnard en Steve Hofmeyer om die aandag af te lei van hulle eie lafhartige gatkruipery. Ons praat nie oor

Nou wonder ek waar gaan die spul heen wat hulle joppies deur die ANC verkry het, wanneer hierdie kaartehuis ineenstort, soos hy ongetwyfeld gaan? Hulle is in die moeilikheid. Malema gaan hulle breek en dan sy pelle aanstel. Of Maimane. Of sal hulle soos alle polities korrektes gou gat omswaai en Malema pelle word, vir ’n paar krummels? Aai tog, waar sal my hulp vandaan kom!

Malaria is a disease that has been around for a while, according to WHO, about 63% of people in the southern African region are living in areas that are affected by the disease, with pregnant women and children under the age of five being more susceptible. Around 627,000 of the people subsequently died (WHO malaria report, 2013).Malaria is still the number one cause of hospitalisations and deaths in Africa. In fact, malaria causes more deaths than HIV and tuberculosis, considering that there is a malaria related death every 30 seconds in Africa, predominantly among women and children.The battle is far from over with Malaria still the biggest killer in sub-Saharan Africa. Despite increased initiatives to combat Malaria, the challenge is that there continues to be major gaps in intervention coverage. Further, 278 million of the 840 million people at risk of malaria in sub-Saharan Africa live in households that do not have a single insecticide treated mosquito net and, between 56 and 69 million children with malaria do not receive anti-malarial drugs. Some of the vital and basic ways the public can do to protect themselves from malaria is:- If you live in an endemic area and there is indoor residual spray campaign, make sure your house is treated.- When visiting malaria areas, use repellent, coils, and make sure you sleep under treated bed net.- If you have any flu-like symptoms after visiting a Malaria prone region – do get tested as early detection is key.

Hy het onlangs na 26 jaar in die polisie bedank.Louwrens gaan hom nou op private mi sdaadonde r soeke deu r ’n n i e winsgewende organisas ie Her i tage Protection Groep (HPG) toespits. Hulle sal aandag skenk aan plaasaanvalle, moord, gewapende roof en renosterstropery.Hierdie teruggetrokke en beskeie man is duidelik ’n kenner op die gebied van misdaad en straal selfversekerdheid uit.Hy het nie die diens van die SAPD verlaat as gevolg van ’n vertrouensbreuk tussen hom en die mag nie en hy is tans besig om by die reservistediens aan te sluit.Tydens die beantwoording van vrae, het Kol Louwrens gemeld dat die outydse gevegsaanduidings (Afrika tekens) selde in plaasaanvalle gebruik word, maar dat daar gewoonlik punte van toegang en ontsnapping aangedui word, of die plek waar gesteelde items kan gebêre word. Hy het verder gesê dat slegs 10% van landelike aanvalle geleentheidsmisdaad is en 90% van aanvalle die gevolg van inligting van binne die plaas self, plaaswerkers of selfs mense wat werk op die plaas kom doen, soos draadspan. Hy het gewaarsku teen vreemde werkers en gemeld dat ’n groot persentasie aanvalle wat met ernstige geweld gepaard gaan, deur buitelanders gepleeg word.

THE rotary engine lives! At least it does in this Mazda RX-Vision concept car.Unveiled at the Tokyo motor show, this low-slung sports concept is powered by an all-new SKYACTIV-R rotary engine. Mazda isn’t revealing any details yet (around 225 kW is the general speculation) but Mazda CEO Masamichi Kogai did say that Mazda has “never stopped research and development efforts towards the rotary engine,” and that “one day rotary will make a

Thanks to the compact nature of the rotary engine though, it’s significantly lower. However it is not the F-Type that the Mazda is taking aim at… were they to build it. Instead its Porsche’s Cayman.“If we were to mass produce the car, the Cayman is the right kind of assumption,” said R&D chief Kiyoshi Fujiwara. “We’d like to make the weight lighter, lighter than a Cayman.”So will they indeed make it? MANY more people should stay at home and work instead of commuting, because technology currently in common use allowed it, the Cape Town Chamber of Commerce and Industry said last week.More use should be made of the broadband network by allowing people to work online from home.Drastic steps needed to be taken to reduce traffic congestion, the chamber said.Mayor De Lille referred to measurements done by the TomTom satellite navigation service provider which shows that the city was the most congested in the country and the 55th most congested in the world.“With the morning peak flow now stretching from 6am to 10am, introducing more flexible work hours will not be enough,” Myburgh said.“We need to get cars off the road and the cheapest way to do this is to do more work at home and online.“If all the executives and others who commute by private car could work from home for just one day a week we would take 20 percent of traffic off the roads.“That is the kind of flexi-time we need to see. The important thing will be to spread those work-from-home days evenly throughout the week.”Myburgh said more online work would save countless hours currently wasted in heavy traffic.“It has become possible to do more by remote control. We can move files around, do research, write letters and reports, exchange e-mails and even take part in conferences without leaving our homes.“Many people I know say they are more productive working at home than they can be at the office with all its distractions. I have no doubt that when we use the technology already available there will be no need to come to town as frequently as we do now.”Myburgh said it would also be important to encourage firms to decentralise with more branch offices in the suburbs with computer links to head offices.“In this way we can shorten commuter trips and bring many of them into safe cycling and walking range,” she said.There was no need to legislate trucks off the roads in peak hours as operators already understood the enormous costs of unproductive trucks idling in traffic, but there was a need to encourage night deliveries wherever possible.“Delivering, say, goods to a supermarket at night should be encouraged as it would prove to be more efficient in the long run,” Myburgh said.“In most cases traffic moves at the speed of the slowest vehicle and heavy trucks create a serious problem.”Myburgh said car-sharing or car-pooling was an obvious measure but there were security, insurance and other complications.“We need to start talking about the problems because I believe there will be solutions and I believe business will be co-operative.”Another problem was the way accident scenes were managed.One way to improve this was to get more traffic officers onto light motorcycles which could get to accident scenes quickly and manage the traffic flow.There was often room for two slow-moving traffic streams if red cones were used to guide drivers.This would be relatively cheap and they could be effective.“We need new thinking and management skills and the time is coming for some radical decisions,” Myburgh said.The TomTom traffic index was compiled from actual Global Positioning System data.It showed that Cape Town’s evening peak was already 72 percent congested.Last year, the Index revealed that the evening rush hour was the most congested time of day on virtually every road network around the world.If a motorist had to drive during rush hour, he or she could expect to spend double the time in the car, on average, stuck in traffic.Cape ArgusED: Now think about Lydenburg for a moment. Sure it probably does not take more than 15 minutes to get to work, but at what frustration levels?Many small businesses can work from home. All it requires is assistance from the Municipality in terms of re-zoning and a bit of marketing to get customers to your premises. Affordable Internet is a must.If we consider the layout of the town, a bit of planning will do much in helping. Voortrekker in the CBD is wide enough to have four lanes. All it requires is

some paint and traffic should flow more easily than one car in the centre of the roadway at a time.Create one or even two level crossings over the railway line between Chris Lombard and Van Staden streets and even one between Lehman and the road to the east of the Lydenburg Hoêrskool, to join up with Buhrman. Some street extensions between Rivierstraat and Lange street, utilising the unused high level bridge, will create a third crossing over the Sterkspruit. Similarly a link over the Dorpsrivier between Maasdorp and Eerste straat should at least reduce traffic over the iron bridge to Mashishing by 40%.Several neighbours or mothers from the same street convey kids to school, using exactly the same route at the same time. Talk to each other and pool resources or divide the week up in turns for each parent.The bottle neck up to the Heads and Sterkspruit Estates can fairly easily be addressed by linking the fisheries road to Sterkspruit estates.Of course it will require money, planning and some minor road building, but traffic is going to get worse, not better. We need big business and Thaba Chweu to sit around a table and to plan these changes properly. It must be budgeted for and implemented as soon as possible, starting with the less costly changes first.Another option for the CBD is converting the central area into one way streets, so that parking spaces can be changed from parallel to angled parking, thereby freeing up to 40% more parking in the CBD.These exercises are not difficult and must not be over complicated. What we need is a can-do attitude and the co-operation of all involved.Andre Coetzee.

MITSUBISHI Motors has confirmed that its next-generation Triton bakkie will arrive in South Africa by mid-2016.The new bakkie is in its fifth-generation and the marque says it is their most advanced bakkie yet.Wynand Pretorius, chief operations officer (COO) of Mitsubishi SA, said: "The new Triton offers a surprisingly quiet ride and cabin comfort reminiscent of a passenger car, while in the new Triton functionality and reliability required for tough working conditions are as present as ever."The new Triton boasts a bold grill framed by bi-xenon lights and a larger load bay.Pretorius said: "The new design harks back to the popular Colt which was the top-selling pick-up in South Africa in the early 2000s."A wider interior angle of the side-windows provides additional shoulder space inside the cabin. The cabin also benefits from new seats with thicker side bolsters.Mitsubishi says the Triton boasts a class-leading turning circle of 5.9m.Underneath the skin, the Triton uses stiffer suspension springs and expanded stabilisers in front to reduce body roll.The combination of finely-tuned rear shock absorbers and an extension of the rear leaf springs further contribute to a quieter and more comfortable ride. The Triton uses a new-generation 2.4 litre turbo diesel engine which produces

133kW/430Nm. The engine uses a cylinder block from aluminium to save 30kg overall. There are two transmission options: a six-speed manual and five-speed automatic. The top-of-the-range 4x4 double cab derivatives will offer the 'Super Select II' four-

wheel drive system, offering four types of driving modes including full-time 4WD and 2WD which improves cornering performance.A simple turning knob in the centre console allows for shifting between 2WD and 4WD modes.The new Triton was awarded a five-star ANCAP safety rating in Australia and on the double-cab models offers seven airbags and ISOFIX mounting points for baby seats.
