    Research Paper Worksheet

Business Writing is Not Creative WritingCreative writing leads the reader through a series of events, introduces information expectedlyand unexpectedly, occasionally fools the reader, and eventually pays off with a surprise ending.

Its overall goal is to entertain.

Business writing is different. It is straightforward and easy to understand. A question or problem is posed, information is presented in a logical sequence, and a conclusion is drawn. Itsoverall goal is to inform, ask, and persuade.

The 3 Cs of Business WritingBusiness writing, when effective, exhibits 3 Cs. It is clear, concise, and correct.Clear No misunderstanding of meaning

Eliminate clichs and wordy fillers. Watch preposition overuse by eliminating compound propositions, converting

prepositions to other forms of speech, and using the Active voice. Avoid nominalizations (nouns formed by converting a verb). Ex: Search vs. GooglingConcise Short, direct, and to the point

Use the Active voice (Subject/Verb/Object) instead of the Passive voice(Object/Verb/Subject). Be careful using forms of the verb be.

Use commas to form compound sentences linked with a conjunction, link choppysentences, link similar sentences with a semicolon.

Keep sentence length to 8-10 words, paragraph length to 4-7 sentences.Correct No errors

Know the requirements of your assignment. Check facts, then double check.

Dont rely on spell-check in the place of thorough proofreading. Avoid using the first person perspective ( I feel, I believe, I think that) Watch word-usage gremlins. Ex: There, their, theyre Work ahead of deadlines to plan assignments and review work.

Basic Business Writing Structure No matter what you write (letter, memo, report, requisition); it will follow a basic format. Youwill state your point, make your argument, and then draw a conclusion.Introduction

Funnel format start general, end with the point you will be making Your thesis statement will give your paper direction and focus

Argument Brainstorm on separate pieces of paper Develop each argument fully, then combine with transitions to give paper flow

Conclusion Reverse the funnel start with a summary (restate your thesis), draw a final conclusion,

    project to the future.
