It recognizes the commitment of altar servers who are in high school and are continuing to serve God and their community. We have been offering formal training in our parish for altar servers since January 2010 and use the Catechesis works found in the Level I, Level II & Level III Parish Atria to facilitate the formation and continuing education of our altar servers. St Scholastica's became a Guild Parish in March 2015 and we witnessed ten servers inducted from St Schol's for the first time in 2015. This year we were very blessed to have another four high school servers inducted into the Guild of St Stephen on Friday, 27 May 2016 at St Patrick's Cathedral in Melbourne. Many Congratulations to our new Guild members: Gerald, Jeremy G, Jeremy L and Nicole. Great thanks to their families and also to Audrey, Jeremy W and Steph for travelling into the city to support them on this special night. Thank you to all our parishioners for your continuing prayers for our altar servers! God Bless! Updates of Principal Appointment Dear All, The Principal Appointment has progressed well thus far and thanks be to God we now move to its final stages. Early next week the Panel will meet to discuss some issues concerning the interview of the candidates and set a date for the interview which will probably take place during the second or third week of June. After the interview I will make a final decision on who will be our school’s next principal based upon the Panel’s recommendations. Once a final decision is made by the parish priest, the result will be forwarded to Archbishop Denis Hart, who will have a final approval before it is publically announced. I ask you to continue to pray for this process and our school that our good Lord may provide us with what we truly need at this time. Fr Thanh Tran

10th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year C 5th June 2016 Entrance Antiphon The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; whom should I dread? When those who do evil draw near, they stumble and fall.

First Reading: 1 Kings 17:17-24 A reading from the first book of the Kings Look, said Elijah, your son is living.

The son of the mistress of the house fell sick; his illness was so severe that in the end he had no breath left in him. And the woman said to Elijah, 'What quarrel have you with me, man of God? Have you come here to bring my sins home to me and to kill my son?' 'Give me your son', he said, and taking him from her lap, carried him to the upper room where he was staying and laid him on his own bed. He cried out to the Lord, 'Lord my God, do you mean to bring grief to the widow who is looking after me by killing her son?' He stretched himself on the child three times and cried out to the Lord, 'Lord my God, may the soul of this child, I beg you, come into him again!' The Lord heard the prayer of Elijah and the soul of the child returned to him again and he revived. Elijah took the child, brought him down from the upper room into the house, and gave him to his mother. 'Look', Elijah said, 'your son is alive.' And the woman replied, 'Now I know you are a man of God and the word of the Lord in your mouth is truth itself.'

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm: Ps 29:2. 4-6. 11-13 R. I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me.

I will praise you, Lord, you have rescued me and have not let my enemies rejoice over me. O Lord, you have raised my soul from the dead, restored me to life from those who sink into the grave. R.

Sing psalms to the Lord, you who love him, give thanks to his holy name. His anger lasts a moment; his favour through life. At night there are tears, but joy comes with dawn. R.

The Lord listened and had pity. The Lord came to my help. For you have changed my mourning into dancing; O Lord my God, I will thank you for ever. R. Second Reading: Galatians 1:11-19 A reading from the letter of St Paul to the Galatians God revealed his Son in me, that I might preach the Good News about him to the pagans.

The Good News I preached is not a human message that I was given by men, it is something that I learnt only through a revelation of Jesus Christ. You must have heard of my career as a practising Jew, how merciless I was in persecuting the Church of God, how much damage I did to it, how I stood out among other Jews of my generation, and how enthusiastic I was for the traditions of my ancestors.

Then God, who had specially chosen me while I was still in my mother's womb, called me through his grace and chose to reveal his Son in me, so that I might preach the Good News about him to the pagans. I did not stop to discuss this with any human being, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to see those who were already apostles before me, but I went off to Arabia at once and later went straight back from there to Damascus. Even when after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas and stayed with him for fifteen days, I did not see any of the other apostles; I only saw James, the brother of the Lord.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclamation: Luke 7:16 Alleluia, alleluia! A great prophet has appeared among us; God has visited his people. Alleluia!

Gospel: Luke 7:11-17 A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke Young man, I say to you, arise.

Jesus went to a town called Nain, accompanied by his disciples and a great number of people. When he was near the gate of the town it happened that a dead man was being carried out for burial, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a considerable number of the townspeople were with her. When the Lord saw her he felt sorry for her. 'Do not cry,' he said. Then he went up and put his hand on the bier and the bearers stood still, and he said, 'Young man, I tell you to get up'. And the dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him to his mother. Everyone was filled with awe and praised God saying, 'A great prophet has appeared among us; God has visited his people.' And this opinion of him spread throughout Judaea and all over the countryside.

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Communion Antiphon God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God in him.

Readings 12 June 2016 First Reading: 2 Samuel 12:7-10. 13 Second Reading: Galatians 2:16. 19-21 Gospel: Luke 7:36 - 50

THE ANNUNCIATION

We know the scene: the room, variously furnished, almost always a lectern, a book; always the tall lily. Arrived on solemn grandeur of great wings, the angelic ambassador, standing or hovering, whom she acknowledges, a guest. But we are told of meek obedience. No one mentions courage The engendering Spirit did not enter her without consent. God waited. She was free to accept or refuse, choice integral to humanness. Aren’t there annunciations of one sort or another in most lives? Some unwillingly under-take great destinies, enact them in sullen pride, uncomprehending. More often those moments when roads of light and storm open from darkness in a man or woman, are turned away from in dread, in a wave of weakness, in despair and with relief. Ordinary lives continue. God does not smite them. But the gates close, the pathway vanishes. She had been a child who played, ate, spelt like any other child—but unlike others, wept only for pity, laughed in joy not triumph. Compassion and intelligence fused in her, indivisible. Called to a destiny more momentous than any in all of Time, she did not quail, only asked a simple, ‘How can this be?’ and gravely, courteously, took to heart the angel’s reply, perceiving instantly the astounding ministry she was offered: to bear in her womb Infinite weight and lightness; to carry in hidden, finite inwardness, nine months of Eternity; to contain in slender vase of being, the sum of power— in narrow flesh, the sum of light. Then bring to birth, push out into air, a Man-child needing, like any other, milk and love— but who was God. —

Denise Levertov

1. How has the ‘gift of faith and trust’ been Good News in your life? Is this gift ‘annunciated’ or evident to others? If so, how? If not, why?

2. Identify the times you have struggled to wait in your personal vulnerability to allow God’s loving presence to enter. Recall how you felt at the time. Consider what you might do next time to ‘let God in’.

3. ‘The engendering spirit did not enter her without consent. God waited. She was free to accept or refuse, choice integral to humanness.’ Reflect on the important choices in your life. What do you most value/admire about Mary as a model of faith? Why?
