16Visit the Chain of Lakes Classic Boat Show.On July 9, the Minnesota Lakes MaritimeMuseum presents a stunning display of

Try geocaching

23Try geocaching at Lake Carlos StatePark. Geocaching is the recreationalactivity of hunting for a hidden ob-

ject with the use of GPS coordinates. Lake CarlosState Park offers hands-on training that will helpyou participate in Minnesota’s statewide Geo-caching Wildlife Safari. The class is June 18 from1-2 p.m. Learn more about geocaching opportuni-ties at the Minnesota DNR website.

Attend a concert

24Attend a series of high quality concertsthrough the Central Lakes Concert Associa-tion. CLCA, formed in 1983, sponsors six con-

certs a year for season ticket holders from September to April.Members can attend all the concerts in Alexandria, plus concerts infive nearby communities for $35 per member.

nity for those looking to explore what’s below the surface. TheAlexandria area has PADI instructors who offer courses for thoselooking to become scuba certified.

29Walk and explore Alexandria and Osakis. The ActiveLiving Douglas County group cre-ated walking maps of Alexan-

dria and Osakis and they’re available in thearea free of charge. Pick one up, lace up your

walking shoes and explore the historic sitesand points of interest in these towns.

Snowmobilethe trails

30A snowmobiler’s para-dise awaits you in Dou-glas County. Filled with

spectacular views along trails that travelthrough flatlands and heavily wooded

hills, snowmobilers are also treatedto the sight of abundant wildlife. The

Douglas Area Trails Association (DATA) maintainsthe 370 miles of trails that connect every com-munity within the county, so food, gas, serv-ices and accommodations are always nearby.

Float down the river

summer afternoon. Load up the inner tubesand a cooler and jump in the slow-movingriver with friends and family for a memo-rable summer adventure.

32During frigid February, people plungeinto a lake on purpose! The Polar BearPlunge is an annual fundraiser for Spe-

cial Olympics Minnesota. This year, 263 people tookthe plunge and raised $48,500 for Special Olympics.The event draws a great crowd every year. Thinkingabout taking the plunge? Watch for registration de-tails later this year.

to compete for fun or nice prizes against other com-petitive anglers. The Ice Fishing Challenge is one ofthe biggest tournaments held here each year. Almost2,200 anglers hit the ice on Lake Agnes for the 2011event looking for a chance at a big payday.
