FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHER:“I hope the viewer of these images enjoy the avian beauty that can be found in our municipal parks. Be sure to notice the magnificent backdrops that these well managed parks provide for the viewer and photographer.

We are fortunate to live in an area that is part of several migratory flyways, where there are abundant numbers of costal and shore birds, seasonal visitors from the south and west and many woodland species. New Braunfels is a choice destination for any bird lover.”

Throughout this issue are photos of some of our parks system’s avian residents. These spectacular images were taken by local photographer, Dan Tharp, who graciouslyallowed us to feature his outstanding work. Enjoy!

ARBORETUM GUIDE SPOTLIGHT Anaqua Ehretia anacua

The anaqua is a small to medium-sized tree with a dense crown, often with several trunks corded together. This attractive tree primarily

grows in south Texas and Mexico due to its cold intolerance. Anaqua is slow growing and appears shrubby in youth and on dry hillsides,

although it may grow in height of 50 feet along streams. This tree is an excellent shade or street tree, provides wildlife shelter and it tolerates many soil types. It is extremely drought hardy and has fragrant white flowers in the spring. The leaves

are rough in texture giving the common tree name “sandpaper tree.” German settlers to the New Braunfels area gave the tree name “vogelbeerenbaum,” meaning

birdberry tree since many birds enjoy feasting on the orange-yellow berries.

An arboretum is a place for the study, display and preservation of trees. Thanks to the foresight and devotion of members of the Guada Coma Garden Club, Landa Park was designated as an arboretum in 1982. This arboretum acts as a living library of trees. In 2007, the arboretum was named after William and Dolores Schumann, in honor of their endless devotion to this botanical jewel.

PICK UP YOUR GUIDE: The Arboretum Guide is available for purchase at the Parks Administration Office. The printed guide is $5. The walking trail is 1.25 miles and open to the public. The guide and map are also available, free of charge, on the Parks and Recreation website www.nbtexas.org/ARBORETUM

Lindheimer Plaza NAMED A LONE STAR LEGACY PARK.

Lindheimer Plaza, named after Ferdinand Lindheimer the “Father of Texas Botany,” was honored with designation as a Lone Star Legacy Park by the Texas Recreation and Parks Society (TRAPS) in a ceremony at the association’s annual institute in Corpus Christi on February 19, 2014.

Linheimer Plaza is located at 603 Comal Avenue and the plaza’s origins as a City Park date to 1928. In early 2013, New Braunfels Garden Club member Mrs. Peggy Hoffman approached the New Braunfels Parks and Recreation Advisory Board regarding revitalization of Lindheimer Plaza. A partnership evolved and new stone benches were placed. In October, the City and the New Braunfels Garden Club held a ceremony to mark the revitalization effort currently underway.

For more information on Lindheimer Plaza visit www.nbtexas.org/lindheimer or call the Parks and Recreation Department at 830-221-4350.

Reopening Fall 2014! Renovations of the Landa Park Golf Course at Comal Springs are on track, with a reopening date set for October, 2014.

After City Council approval, the course closed for renovation in October 2013. Renovations will include building all new greens, adding new tees, redesign of certain holes and improving cart paths. Fairway improvements will include contouring and the addi-tion of fairway bunkers.

Also in the design will be a judicious use of native grasses in “out of play” areas that will add texture and color to the course, as well as provide habitat for wildlife. The addition of riparian buffers and bio-swale drainage will assist with shielding Landa Lake and the Comal River from natural and man-made impurities in storm water runoff.

A short game practice area will be another new feature. Finally, the new irrigation system will effectively water tees, greens, fair-ways and near roughs to allow sufficient coverage in all areas of play.
