What is their stake? q Define the Scope: What will be included/excluded from the project? When is it due? What is the budget? q Identify Tasks & Activities: Start with the five MAIN things that need to be done. Next, break them down one level. q Get Team Resources: What skills do you need to do those tasks? Who will work on them? q Build Budget & Schedule: What other resources (besides people) are needed (technology, supplies)? How much will each resource cost? How long will each task take? Can any of them be done in parallel? q Define Milestones: What interim checkpoints that tell you if things are going according to plan? How will you know? q Assess Risks: What could go wrong? How likely is it? What would be the impact? How will you know? What would you do? How can you mitigate the risk? q Plan Communications: Who needs to know what? When do they need to know it? What do they already know? q Change Control: How will you manage changes? Who can approve?

10 Basic Project Planning Steps q Define the Goal: Why are you doing the project? What

important results are we trying to achieve? Final Outcome?

Constraints What constraints exist (i.e., time, money, people, technology, etc.)?

Assumptions What are some things you are counting on to be true (for example, that your key staff will remain on the project, or that there won’t be a hurricane during your vacation, or that funding will come in by a specific date, etc.)?

Risks What things could go wrong? What are the uncertainties you need to plan around or watch out for or consider?
