Red sands of the outback meets the clear turquoise water of the Indian ocean, and lush green National Parks meet the rugged south west coast line. While the remoteness, wildlife, sense of freedom and space are what makes Western Australia so special, they can also cause some problems for the unprepared, particularly in the remote North West. Travelwest Publications has put together some useful tips to help make your holiday as pleasant and safe as possible. Driving It is important that your vehicle is in roadworthy condition and mechanically capable of safely completing your journey. Check your spare tyre is inflated and in good working order. Carry plenty of water for yourself, passengers and vehicle. Ensure you have adequate tools to make vehicle repairs. If you should break down remain with your vehicle until help arrives; wait for the next passing car. Never walk off through the bush to find help. Carry an adequate first aid kit. Be careful overtaking road trains as trucks can be towing three or four trailers and be more than 50 metres in length. • Check unsealed road conditions as closures can occur after heavy rain. Call the Main Roads Department for the latest road conditions on 138 138 or contact the local Visitor Centre. Wildlife Look out for wildlife particularly when driving at dusk, dawn and night time as kangaroos, emus and cattle are on the move and can be difficult to see at these times. Kangaroos in particular can be attracted to the headlights so driving at night is best avoided on country roads. Crocodiles are found across the north of Australia including the Kimberley region. There are two types of crocodile, the saltwater crocodile and the Johnsons fresh water crocodile. The saltwater crocodile is equally at home in fresh water and is by far the most dangerous of the two. Avoid getting into or near the water in these areas; keep a look out for signs and if in doubt contact the local Visitor Centre for information regarding crocodile locations. If bushwalking ensure you have adequate foot protection against snakes; they are rare to see and are more scared of you but can bite if treaded on or if they feel threatened. Familiarise yourself with procedures if bitten; visit www.lifesavingwa.com.au. The largest tides in the southern hemisphere (over 11 metres) are found in the North West and care should be taken around tidal areas. Check tidal charts to avoid being caught out.
