Did you know inhaling can cause headaches, nausea and vomiting? Users can be moody and aggressive or think that they see things that are not there. Repeated inhaling can cause people to pass out. Over time, inhalants can cause serious and permanent damage to vital organs like the brain, kidneys, heart and liver. As part of our partnership with the Petroleum Club of WA, the year 10 students recently went to the Arrowsmith processing facility where oil from the ocean rig you can see from Dongara offshore, is processed. They had a talk from the head of Triangle Energy; went to the heliport and had a helicopter induction and listened to a talk from the CEO of Mitsui (formerly AWE). They talked about the proposed new processing plant in Dongara, they also went to the Xyris Well Head where they pump gas out of the ground to a pipeline to Perth. A special thank you to Paul and Amber Samulkiewicz for donating plants for the Kindy and Pre-Primary sensory garden. The Kindy class enjoyed planting the herbs and everyone will enjoy watching them grow. The various aromas of the plants will provide wonderful learning experiences for the children.

We have been lucky enough to have some very talented guest speakers visit our Year 9/10 Photography Class this year.

In Term 1, Mrs Calver presented to the class on taking photos and editing with a mobile phone. Students experimented with light and colour on a still life display that resulted in some very creative photographs.

Miss Aletta Bussenschutt then presented about wildlife and underwater photography. She very generously shared her own photographs and her knowledge on the subjects. Many of our students have since experimented with photographing our local wildlife and some have setup their own Instagram accounts to display their work.

In Week 3 of Term 2, Dani from Wilder Photography visited the school to talk about Portrait Photography. The students learned all about the preparation and thought required prior to using the camera, as well as about posing, lighting and props used during the taking of photos. They then had the opportunity to practise what they had learned and had lots of fun doing so. Dani is a busy mum and local photographer but she very kindly offered to edit the students photographs.

Thank you to all of our guest speakers who have shared so much knowledge and talent with our Photography students.

Well done to all the Kindy and Pre-Primary students for being Responsible, Respectful and trying to Achieve their best when playing in the playground. This fortnight’s prize winners were, for being Responsible – Bella Potts for saying sorry when she had a disagreement, Elijah Taylor for walking on the verandah, Aiden Bowran for saying sorry to a friend, Pippa Fish, Joshua Prins and Jaedon Staley for helping to pack away. Well done to all our prize winners this fortnight.

Kindy Green Group and Year Four met their buddies in the Library for National Simultaneous Story Time on Wednesday 22nd May. They enjoyed reading Alpacas with Maracas by Matt Cosgrove and listening for rhyming words together. The big buddies then played a simple rhythm using the maracas and the little buddies had to listen and copy the rhythm using maracas.

On Thursday, 23rd May Darcy and Madu from the Western Australia Debating League, visited our school to run an Introduction to Debating Workshop for our students. Eighteen secondary students participated in the workshop to learn the etiquette of presenting an argument, debating and rebutting. We hope to get a team together to take part soon in a mini-competition. Watch this space.

Kindy Green Group have been learning all about the special people in their families and how all families are different. We cooked afternoon tea at home to bring and share with our grandparents. What a spread! There were 13 Grandparents who came to our special afternoon tea. We started the afternoon by dancing to music with our Grandparents, then we showed them how we play nicely in our classroom and all the great work we do in Kindy.

There were lots of hugs, smiles and memorable moments enjoyed by both the children and grandparents.
