which was so enormous in size that it reached the sky and penetrated down the earth. They
made a vow in front of gods that whoever finds the end of the pillar is superior. Vishnu
transformed himself into a boar and went to the 'Patal' (nether world) to find the base of that
'Pillar of fire'. Similarly Brahma transformed himself into a swan and flew up in the sky to
find its limit. Vishnu was unsuccessful in his attempt and came back and told the gods. But
Brahma who could not see the beginning the pillar told lies (keeping Ketaki flower to give a
false witness) before gods and Vishnu to declare his superiority.
Shiva became angry on seeing the conduct of the Brahma and cursed him “You spoke untruth with a desire to become superior and worship-able. It is my curse that, you will not be worshipped by anybody.” And pleased with Vishnu for speaking truth, accorded him the same status as that of his own."
Realizing the mistake, Brahma sought pardon from Shiva. Shiva said “You go to Kanthamathanam (Mangadu) and perform yagna where sin you accrued of telling lies will be redeemed”. However you will not be worshipped but rituals /actions required by Vedas and Smritis alone will be accorded to you. Later, Brahma went to Kanthamathana and did yagna. The Teertha is named after a great sage, Maharishi NARENA ( prounounced – Nah, run,
uh), the younger brother of the famous sage, AGASTIYAR . Narena Maharishi is also known
by the name of Idamvahanar.
The mythology of the TEERTA (Holy water spring) dates back many eons. Narena
Maharishi was undertaking deep meditation (TAPAS) in a remote place in the Himalayan
Mountains. However he was unable to concentrate on his meditation due to various mental
stresses, which created mental strain. Five homa/yagna kundams (sacrificial fire alters)
were started: and Narena Maharishi started meditating, sitting in the middle of these yagna
kundams. Pleased with this tapas, Eashwara (God) in the form of Shiva appeared before
Narena Maharishi: and told him, that he was willing to grant a boon to him. Narena
Maharishi asked for deliverance (mukti) from the turbulence in his mind. Eashwara in the
form of Shiva, asked Narena Maharishi to “Sethukshetram” (place of the Sethu): where he
would find a solution to the turbulence in his mind.
Narena Maharishi, came down south to Rameswaram island (then called
Gandhamardhnaparvata): sat in a north east part, and started doing his Tapas. He was able
to give his full concentration: and pleased with the devotion, Eashwara (God) in the form of
Shiva, again appeared before Narena Maharishi: and said he was again willing to grant a
boon to him. “What do you want?”, asked Eashwara in the form of Shiva. Narena Maharishi
replied, “Inspite of being a sage, I suffered from a lot of mental confusion and mental
tension. I can imagine that the mental state of normal human beings: living the worldly life
in this planet earth, would be much worse. Please suggest a solution that would remove the
mental confusion and tension of ordinary people, living on this planet earth.”
Eashwara(God) in the form of Shiva, was very happy to hear this request. He told Narena
Maharishi: “When you start appreciating that the problems of others is bigger than your
own, you are on the path to Mukti (salvation). There are three types of people on this planet
earth.
The first type, weighs the costs and benefits of a decision, and having once decided, acts with
the faith of God (Deiva Balan).
The second type has a lot of self confidence, and uses his/her own intuition and native
intelligence to take a decision and act.
The third type takes decisions and acts very quickly. But at the first obstacle s/he gives up.
Usually his/her life would be a story of half done work.
Due to your tapas, I am creating a Teertha (holy water spring). A person who bathes in this
spring, and then does SHIVA POOJA (worship of Shiva): will have NO mental confusion,
mental tension and worries. S/he will get mental peace of mind, and attain Mukti
(salvation).”
Narena Maharishi was reincarnated during the days of the Ramayana, as a minister in the
court of Prince Vibhishina, named SAMBATHI. Sambadhee had a role in the righteous war
(Dharma yudh) waged by the reincarnation of God on this earth, Rama against the demon
king Ravana. Prince Vibhisina was the younger brother of demon king Ravana: and on the
advise of Sambathi, decided to back Rama, the reincarnation of God on this earth, Rama in
this war against his own elder brother.(which is retold in the epic Ramayana).
Sambadhee is also credited in the epic Ramayana, with saving the lives of the reincarnation
of God on this earth, Rama and his younger brother Lakshmana: after they were hit by the
weapons of Prince Inderjit, named Naagapasha or Naagara (snake weapon). He gave the
right advise to Prince Vibhishana – on the method of revival of Rama and Lakshmana, after
they were rendered senseless by the weapon.
Mental balance is the first precondition for MUKTI (Salvation).
